“The book is separated into three parts,” he says. “My youth growing up in St. Louis until I was 18, my radio days, and my 26 years in the music business.” Turner started in radio in 1970 and was on air for 14 years at stations in San Antonio, Terre Haute, Little Rock, Nashville, Cincinnati and Memphis. He moved to the record side in 1983, spending 14 years at RCA and 12 at Lyric Street. He went back to radio five years ago doing mornings at WDKN/Dickson, TN, just down the road from his home in Kingston Springs. “A group of us were interested in buying the station, but I’m glad we didn’t,” Turner says. “I took that money and paid off my house.” He stopped by the station one day to meet the new owners and the next thing he knew, he was on the air in mornings. “I wrote the book as a legacy for my children,” Turner explains. The task also gave him the opportunity to write an acceptance speech, of sorts, showing his appreciation to mentors and others who helped him along the way. “It’s not like I’m ever going into any kind of Hall of Fame, but I wanted to say thanks.” As many with long careers in this business know, wild stories are easy to come by. Turner “took one for the team” when he was on the air at WSAI/Cincinnati. He agreed to mud wrestle the smallest member of the famed “Chicago Knockers” women’s mud wrestling team. After advising him to take off his glasses, the five-foot 90-pound “Blonde Bombshell” pinned him after two quick rounds. In his first month as an RCA regional, Turner rode the Alabama tour bus through the Midwest. For his initiation, tour manager Greg Fowler left him locked in the bus by himself in Ames, Iowa. He had fallen asleep and had no idea where he was and where everyone went. The next week, he was sent to Chicago with

Ronnie Milsap to visit all three Country stations. “I got chewed out for not securing a limo,” he recalls. “I thought I was saving the company money.” Milsap rolled with it all, including when Turner ran out of film in his camera after the first radio visit. Turner chuckles, “He played along, even offering to take some of the pictures.” Writing only became difficult when Turner was chronicling two passages. “The ending of my seven-year marriage to my high school sweetheart was devastating,” he says. “I spent six months living in a bottle of vodka.” His fortunes turned on a blind date to a Cincinnati Reds game. He’s been married to his date, Pat, for 35 years. The other difficult topic was “the chaos of my son’s drug addiction,” he says, noting the book has brought father and son closer. “Mark told me he discovered things about me from the book, he didn’t even know.” Publishing wasn’t without challenges. Turner had a deal with Readers Digest, but walked away after months of going back and forth. “They would call every two or three days telling me I had to

take stories about certain people out of the book,” he says. “They were afraid to get sued.” Turner ended up self-publishing through Amazon and CreateSpace. “There are only a couple stories I left out,” he adds. So, yes, he names names and doesn’t hold back. He promises to put those stories on his website. Dale and Pat are planning a summer book tour to the markets where he worked in radio. And as half the proceeds are being donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, he suggests, “If any Country Cares partners want to interview me on the air, I have great stories about Rascal Flatts, Ronnie Milsap, Alabama, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Billy Ray Cyrus and more. Plus we can raise some money for the hospital.” Get the book here, reach Turner here, see his website here. –Paul Williams

Chart Chat Congrats to Tyler Hubbard, Brian Kelley, Matthew Hargis and the BMLG Records promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1 with Florida Georgia Line’s “God, Your Mama, And Me” featuring the Backstreet Boys. The song is the third chart-topper from their Dig Your Roots album. Songwriters are Josh Kear, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson. And kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew for notching 29 adds on Little Big Town’s “When Someone Stops Loving You,” topping this week’s board. With a tip of the hat to Stone Door Media Lab’s Jeff Green, LBT snaps a streak of 10 consecutive weeks with a different male solo artist as No. 1 Most Added, which had never happened before in Country Aircheck history. The run also set a record for consecutive weeks with a male artist as most-added, though the previous span in 2006 included three artists who held the top spot for two weeks. In this year’s 25 weeks to date, a female solo artist has been No. 1 most added just once: Miranda Lambert’s “Tin Man.”

SmackSongs’ Walker Hayes discusses his most influential music:1. Harry Chapin’s “Cats In The Cradle”: That song was set apart lyrically from anything I was hearing at that time. Back when you actually went to a store and bought an album, I bought his live album at Peaches. So I didn’t just get a series of tracks; I heard all the stories he told before he sang these songs. And he

also surrounded them with humor. Little did I know I would want to end up doing that for a living.2. Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take The Girl”: This song changed my life. I was in seventh grade. I wasn’t even old enough to understand why it meant so much to me. I just knew it was great. 3. Tupac Shakur’s All Eyez On Me: I was a huge Hip Hop fan growing up. I was obsessed with him. I had that album in my car for an entire summer.4. Jimmy Buffett, Fins Tour, Pensacola, FL: It was the first concert I ever saw. It blew my frickin’ mind. I actually got kicked out for drinking beer underage, but eventually made it to more of his shows. He was a big influence on anyone in Mobile. He has that coastal vibe.5. Kenny Chesney: He’s hands-down the most entertaining live performer I’ve ever seen. The beach balls are flying everywhere. There are TV screens bigger than I’ve ever seen, and usually 80,000 + people singing the songs with you in the nosebleeds. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I have not purchased Sam Hunt’s Montevallo. It’s super embarrassing because my producer, Shane McAnally, is his producer. I’m ashamed and I need to get that album, because I love everything I’ve heard from him. I don’t know, it might be having six kids, or work – I just haven’t yet.• “Important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: I never really got the whole Phish/Widespread Panic battle. It was almost like the Auburn/Alabama rivalry.• An album you listened to incessantly: John Mayer’s Room For Squares probably stayed in my CD changer for a year and never came out. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Lorde’s “Liability.”• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m not sick of the songs from the Frozen soundtrack.

Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Famer Jeffrey Steele puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KHJ-AM/Los Angeles. There were five of us kids, and any time we were in the station wagon, that’s what was on. The first time I heard myself on the radio was one of those classic moments where I was driving over a hill and the

song came on ... and then the station faded out. I only heard maybe half of the first verse and then it faded away into some news program on another station. I’ve forgotten a lot of my radio tour memories. I had to. (laughs) Somewhere in Texas, Boy Howdy visited a small station and then had to go play a rodeo for them. We drove around the arena on the back of a Cadillac convertible singing songs off the album. But we weren’t plugged in, so nobody could hear us! We were just looking at each other going, “What the hell did we sign up for?” The people in the arena were probably thinking, “What are they yelling about?” I travel everywhere with my wife Stephanie. My whole career, I was traveling and missed a lot of quality time with my family. Now that the kids are grown, if I book a gig, she comes with me. It’s so fun. My new album Sons Of The Palomino is: Guy loves classic country, guy finds songs he wrote years ago that are too country for Country radio now. Guy gets talked into recording them. Band tells guy to go write some more. Guy plays songs for some of his respected friends in the industry and they ask if they can sing on the record. Guy finds a rhinestone jacket in his closet and starts playing shows again. My last impulse buy was a house in Florida. We lost our son about 10 years ago and right after that happened, we spent a lot of time in Florida on vacations. I’m really not too impulsive on buying stuff – but that’s a big one. It’s a place for us to come and remember, and make new memories. It helped us heal our broken hearts. I wish I’d written Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground.” I’m mesmerized by the simplicity and structure of it. It’s so crafted, but it sounds so spontaneous. It’s all the things as a songwriter that you try to do every day, and you usually don’t.

all those folks who were standing, you are all the reason for my success.” Consultant and former WWWW/Detroit PD Barry Mardit inducted the late Joe Wade Formicola. Calling him a master of “what goes on in between the songs,” Mardit described “the

Joe that I know.” Among the many stories was one of an on-air plea for a $10,000 check for St. Jude Kids, which a listener quickly fulfilled. “If you knew Joe, you had a friend in Formicola,” Mardit said. Formicola’s son Joseph accepted on behalf of his father. “He lived and breathed radio, which is why I know he deserves this award as his greatest achievement.” Father-in-law Owen Keavney inducted Buck Owens Productions and KUZZ/Bakersfield’s Mel Owens. “There’s no way I can talk about Mel in three minutes,” he said

of his first reaction to being asked, noting he was then told the event was not a roast. “They said, ‘You’re just going to introduce him and talk about his achievements.’ That created another little problem for me. How am I ever going to fill three minutes?”

Owens credited the people around him for the station’s success. “We have people who have been there 20, 30 and 40 years and it’s because they enjoy it,” he said. He thanked his wife and extended family, current and former staff and consultants, closing with a story about his famous uncle. “Twice a year we would play golf for four or five days. Buck liked to call those corporate meetings. He’d say, ‘Lets get around to the bonuses.’ He wanted to get paid. Michael [Owens] and I would say, ‘Since

it’s a corporate meeting, don’t we need to vote on this?’ And Buck would say, ‘Well, yeah. You boys go ahead and vote and when you’re done voting, do it the way I told you.’” WRNS/New Bern, NC’s Jim Mantel was introduced by his daughter Elizabeth Mantel, who is also in radio at WYRK/Buffalo. She told about a “Christmas Break-Ins” promotion Mantel poured his own money into. “More than that, there was no afterglow. They didn’t go on the radio and tell everyone.” Mantel reeled of a list of those who he worked for or with who are in the Hall of Fame, as well as crediting other colleagues for making him better. He thanked his wife Melinda for “35 wonderful ... 34 wonderful years. There was that year in Houston when nobody was happy.” He thanked family, especially those whose experiences were mined for show prep. “My dad didn’t think I was all that funny,” he said in closing. “If he told me once, he said at least half a million times, ‘One of these days that smart mouth is going to get you in trouble.’ I only wish he’d lived long enough to see what this mouth actually accomplished.” WYCD/Detroit’s Tim Roberts inducted the late Linda Lee. “She was always fighting for the common man or woman,” he said. “Fighting for Alzheimer’s, diabetes, the American Cancer Society and helping us win radio station of the decade for St. Jude.” As for her own fight, “She wouldn’t let anyone be down about it,” he said. “She had us all convinced she was going to be the 1% to beat stage four cancer. Unfortunately she lost that battle. But she won the battles in our hearts every day. The outpouring of love after her passing was unbelievable.” To that point, Detroit’s own Kid Rock came to the stage to handle the formal induction, with Lee’s daughter Gina Mills accepting. She shared, “I know she is looking down beaming with pride and joy.” KPLX & KSCS/Dallas’ Mac Daniels inducted Beasley’s Charlie

Ochs. Ticking off his many accomplishments, Daniels drew special attention to Ochs’ two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and an Army commendation for valor. He described an executive known for “passion for radio, honesty, patience and leadership.” Ochs thanked friends and family, particularly wife Margaret,

who left a career in oil well firefighting to jump on “the crazy radio train.” Citing business associates including Bill Figenshu and Mel Karmazin, he expressed appreciation for all the ways he was pushed to be better. Among Ochs many stories were a few about Joe Ladd, including the time he “gave away $25,000 on the second day of a month-long contest.” Ochs closed with some paraphrased song lyrics: “I went hang-gliding. I went stock car racing. I won the

buffalo race on one named Billy Blue. I loved Margaret deeper. Spoke to her sweeter. And someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.” Introduced by Dave Collins, The Good Morning Guys’ Todd Harding, Brian Gary and Susan Moore were praised for doing radio for the right reasons. Moore thanked Country radio, her husband, Miss America scholarships, Mary Tyler Moore “for showing us how to play with the big boys in broadcasting” and Ingstad Broadcasting. In joining Harding and Gary 15 years ago she said, “I found my home. These men are fun, funny, kind, smart, generous, a little naughty and a day-to-day joy.” Harding said, “It is honestly the thrill of my life to be here tonight. Radio has more than exceeded every dream I’ve had. My only regret is that my mom and dad couldn’t be here tonight.

They’re still alive ... they just couldn’t make the trip.” He thanked his wife, then turned to his 29 years with Gary. “ I believe he’s the greatest broadcaster who’s ever worked in the state of Colorado and maybe one of the best in the nation.” “I gotta agree with Todd,” Gary said. “I’m pretty freakin’ awesome.” He thanked his wife and family, then delivered the most inspirational portion of the evening. “What I want to talk about is how lucky we are to do what we do. By the way, I see the empty tables and I will come to your house and deliver this speech. “We get to play music and talk to people. We get to set the mood for the day. We can actually change the world.” Later he added, “That’s what our music does. These guys who bust their asses to write, record and give us these songs are the ones I want to thank. It’s because of country music our listeners will open the door and let us into their lives. “I am in this because I love music, what it does and can do. And I love the power of radio. Nobody does it better than Country. God bless every one of you.” –Chuck Aly
