ADVENT & CHRISTMAS

Do you love Christmas traditions but don’t know where they come from? Tune in for Dr. Michael Patrick Barber’s Advent reflections called “The True Meaning of Christmas” and learn the meaning behind your favorite Christmas pastimes. To go deeper, be sure to get his accompanying book, "The True Meaning of Christmas", available on Catholic.Market.

Today's readings can be found on page590 of the hymnal. The completeworship aide for today's Mass is availableon the bulletin section of our parishwebsite (click or scan the code):

THIS WEEK'S READINGSSunday, December 19, 2021

Often enough the definitive biographies of greatpeople offer an air of “little did we know” about themas they start to recount their story. It’s natural inmany ways, because only God knows for sure how aninfant or toddler will turn out as a mature adult. From the benefit of his or her historical hindsight, the reader already knows what’s going to happen. The biographer can only provide intriguing details,or researched tidbits, to add to the story of whateventually unfolds.

In the case of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we really don’thave a biography in the modern sense of the word. Evidently the Holy Spirit was not interested in such. Nor did the evangelists who gave us a four-partaccounting of Jesus’ words and deeds have abiographical intent. The closest we can come tofilling in the blanks is to appreciate what theproducers of the online series “The Chosen” havecreated for us.

St. Luke brings his readers a well-designed literarypiece about a visit of the Blessed Mother to hercousin Elizabeth. Respected biblical scholars explain. Here is Professor Father Robert J. Karris, O.F.M. :“Luke’s intent in these verses is missed if oneaccentuates Mary’s charity and social concern in

The True Meaning of Christmas with Dr. Michael Barber

visiting her aged, pregnant relative Elizabeth. Notethat if he were intent on presenting Mary as a modelof charity he would not have written of Marydeparting from Elizabeth at the time of her greatestneed. It also strains credulity to imagine a fourteen-year-old Jewish virgin making a four-day journey byherself. Luke’s intent is literary and theological. Hebrings together the two mothers-to-be so that bothmay praise God active in their lives and thatElizabeth’s child might be presented as the ‘precursor’of Mary’s child.”

We believers know John the Baptist’s role in the storyof our salvation. We know also how much he washeld in esteem by Jesus. Our only task in Advent isto remember how God the Father prepared the worldfor His Son’s arrival and what that means for us nowand for our future life. We continue to watch howHis Mother Mary lived in perfect accord with theFather’s will and how love of Him permeated hersinless life. We also learn so much from her.

As our own biography is being written each andevery day, including Christmas Day and beyond, wecan only hope that a copy of it will be available inheaven.

God love you and give you His Christmas peace!

Micah prophesies that the ruler of Israel will comefrom Bethlehem-Ephrathah. The author of the Letterto the Hebrews writes that Christ said that he hadcome to do God’s will and that all have beenconsecrated through the offering of the body of JesusChrist once for all. In the Gospel, Mary visitsElizabeth and the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaps atthe sound of Mary’s voice.

The Jesse Tree is an Advent custom that helps us tospiritually prepare for Christmas. Jesse was the fatherof King David. Long after King David died, Isaiahmade a prophecy that a new shoot would bloom fromthe stump of Jesse. Christians take this as a referenceto Jesus. The Jesse Tree is typically decorated withsymbols of the coming Messiah. To show thisprophecy being symbolically fulfilled this Christmas,we can each represent a new shoot through our loveand generosity toward others.

Thanks to your generosity, nearly every tag has been claimed for our Jesse Giving Tree! Please remember to return gifts to the manger scene by December 19. Gifts should be unwrapped with the tag securely affixed to the gift.

Extra special thank you to Mrs. Schwimmer and our SPS students for their tireless efforts on this endeavor!

A beautiful song that we might hear during Adventand Christmas is “Mary Did you Know?” What Iappreciate most about this song, is that the writersuse the perspective of the Blessed Virgin Mary tosummarize and reflect on the miracles and savingworks of Jesus. This is appropriate, becauseeverything that Mary said and had done, in herministry, had pointed to her son, the Son of God. What has never quite sat with me right about thisbeautifully arranged song, is that it does not seem togive the mother of God enough credit. There was noway that Mary had knowledge of every miracle andsaving work that Jesus would perform in His life andministry, but there is good reason to believe that shewas a woman of deep faith, and prayer.

The Archangel Gabriel came to her, and said, “HailFull of Grace” and as terrifying as the visit of an angelis depicted in the Old Testament, Mary was takenaback, but not frightened. She accepted the messageof an angel who told her that her son would be theSon of God. During pregnancy, Mary visited hercousin Elizabeth, the child in her womb jumped andshe was moved to call her the mother of my Lord. Then there is the message of Simeon in the Templeduring the presentation of Jesus. While Mary may not have known the full scope ofwhat her son was called to, she certainly knew theimportance of Jesus to the world, what she had beencalled to, and that the world was about to be turnedupside down. So, while we hear “Mary Did youKnow” on the radio, we can marvel at the beautifularrangement, reflect on all of Jesus’ miracles andsaving works, and reflect on the role that our BlessedVirgin Mary knowingly played in our salvation! This week, let us pray for the intercession of theBlessed Virgin Mary as we conclude our AdventSeason or preparation. God Bless and have awonderful Christmas Season.

22WED DRESS DOWN DAY

Wear red and green!

During the third week of Advent, we light the single pink candle in addition to the two purple we've already lit. You may have noticed this weekend that our clergy's vestments and some of the decorations in the church building turned from violet to pink (though, the clergy prefer to call it "rose"). Last Sunday, we celebrated Gaudete Sunday, a reminder to rejoice as Christmas approaches. We take this opportunity to reflect on joy.

It brought me great joy to assist our 8th grade students as they filledMrs. Schwimmer’s car full of toys. Every year we hold a toy drive tosupport Mt. Carmel Guild. Our school families show great generosityby purchasing these toys to help the less fortunate.

I particularly enjoyed the students telling their stories of why theypurchased specific items. They are learning the joy of giving.

On Wednesday, our students had the opportunity to shop for family members and loved ones at Santa's Workshop. We were so thrilled to be able to bring this opportunity back to our school community this year to help students appreciate the joy that is giving.

God bless,Kim Clauss

16TH ORDINARY SYNOD OF BISHOPS

Journeying Together through the SynodHave you heard about the Synod? Pope Francis isinviting all of us to be a Church which learns bylistening to the experiences of individuals, frominside and outside the Church community. Remembering the encounter St. Peter had withCornelius (Acts 10), the Holy Father invites us tolisten with care for the voice of the Spirit guidingthe church as we journey together. Will you includethe Synod effort in your prayers?

Prayer for the Synod:We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts;Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder.Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions.Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen.
