Stewardship

A Way of Life

This Week’s Readings

“Blessed are they who have not seen and have

believed,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. For those who

have not seen to believe, however, we must be good

stewards of our faith, living it joyfully and sharing it

generously.

Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish

who put our faith into action - especially through the

spiritual and corporal works of mercy - even when they

may not “see” the fruits of their service, relying on

God’s grace to do the rest!

St. Monica Parents

From the Rector -

As we continue to celebrate Easter Day during this Octave of Easter, the theme of our restoration campaign,

“Together we can do something beautiful for God,” echoes in my thoughts and heart. Over the Easter weekend,

many people commented how beautiful the Cathedral is and how grateful they are for the work that we have done

over these past several months. These positive comments have made me ever more aware of how we have done

something beautiful for God as the faith, generosity, patience and support of so many people came together to

make our hopes a reality. Today’s and tomorrow’s generations will benefit from this work as we gather on

Sundays and Holy Days, at weddings, First Communions and other special events. As our restoration campaign’s

theme reminds us, however, it is not primarily for ourselves that we have done this work, but ultimately for God

that we undertook this work and for this we are justified in feeling joyful.

Coming together to do something beautiful for God is not, however, reserved only for those special

building projects that are undertaken at special moments in a parish’s life. Coming together for God is something

we do every time we gather for Mass and especially when we gather for a special Holy Day such as Easter. We

can sometimes see Mass as something we attend and look to be inspired by. If truth be told, however, Mass is

much more than that. It is our coming together as Readers and Ushers, Priests and Servers, Congregants and

Extraordinary Ministers and joining together with Jesus Christ in making an offering to God our Father. As

beautiful as the physical beauty of the Cathedral is, the beauty of what I experienced during Holy Week as we

joined together at the various Liturgies was even greater. I am most thankful to everyone who made the Liturgies

of Holy Week so beautiful. I thank everyone who attended the Liturgies and raised their hearts and voices to God

in prayer. I thank our Liturgical Ministers who served at the various Liturgies: Readers, Extraordinary Ministers

of Communion, Altar Servers, Ushers, Ministers of Hospitality and Music Ministers. I thank our Liturgy

Committee for their dedication and hard work and our RCIA Team for preparing people to receive the Sacraments

of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. To those who received these sacraments, I congratulate: Mark Carmichael and

Anne O’Reilly who were Baptized, Confirmed and received their First Communion; Devon Knoblach who made a

Profession of Faith, was Confirmed and received her First Communion; Samantha Lazrovitch and Kelsey Reid,

who were Confirmed and received their First Communion. On behalf of all of us, I express our joy that you are

now fully part of the Body of Christ. I thank our Pastoral Staff for so much they do behind the scenes and my

brother priests and Bishop Murphy for leading us in prayer during these holiest of days.

As we go forth into the Easter season and gather at Mass, may we continue to work together, in the spirit of

St. Ignatius of Loyola, Ad majorem dei gloriam - For the greater glory of God!

In the Peace and of Love of Christ,

Father Bill

Voting in New York A Statement on Political

Responsibility by Cardinal Dolan and

the Catholic Bishops of New York State

The good of a democratic republic like ours

depends on the participation of its citizens. The most

fundamental action of a good citizen is to vote.

Regrettably, in our country today an alarming

percentage of citizens do not exercise this right. In

New York State, on average over the past four years,

only 40% of eligible voters carried out their civic

duty.

As the Catholic Bishops of New York State, we urge

every eligible adult Catholic, without exception,

to be sure that he or she is registered to vote and

that ALL EXERCISE THEIR SOLEMN

RESPONSIBILITY OF VOTING in this year’s

elections.

If you are not registered to vote, or not sure you

are registered, please go to the website

www.elections.ny.gov or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE.

You may also go to our own New York State

Catholic Conference website at

www.nyscatholic.org and select “Register to Vote.”

Sadly, determining who to vote for is not always

easy, We have resources to help you make

informed decisions. One trustworthy resource is the

booklet published this year by the United States

Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming

Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. To locate this

resource, go to www.usccb.org, click on issues and

actions and select faithful citizenship. Based on

four of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching –

human dignity, subsidiarity, solidarity and the

common good – this document will help you

evaluate the candidates and the programs they

support on the basis of our shared Catholic vision of

the good society. Forming Consciences for

Faithful Citizenship can also help you in supporting

candidates who are Pro-Life, pro-family and

supportive of those policies that promote the

common good of our society.

Prayer for our Troops Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.

Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families

for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need.

And give us peace. I ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. Amen

Faith on Tap!

All Young Adult are invited to Faith on Tap!

Faith on Tap is an open forum engaging young adults in

straight talk and honest answers to questions of faith,

and where young adults can meet others who are also

living out their faith.

We are honored to have with us Brother Timothy

Driscoll, a Marianist Brother of the Province of

Meribah and an educator for the past 35 years teaching

in Chaminade High School and Kellenberg Memorial

High School. Brother Tim is a dynamic speaker and

enthusiastic speaker. In light of the Year of Mercy,

Brother Tim’s topic for the evening is: “The Art of

Mercy” Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son.”

Bringing together his passion for art and drawing young

people closer to Christ, this is a talk you don’t want to

miss. Faith on Tap will be at the Wantagh Inn,

3264 Railroad Avenue, (across the street from the

Wantagh RR Station) on Monday, April 11, 2016.

The talk begins at 7:30 p.m., but doors will open at

7:00 p.m. Come early, have something to eat- meet new

friends, catch up with old ones.

Please contact Marianne Sheridan, Director for Young

Adults at [email protected] for questions or more

information.
