Parents Called On: Education Queensland says parents will be asked to teach children literacy and numeracy at home, to improve student results. Mums and dads will be asked to play a greater role in education, after research showed children learn more from their parents than their teachers. The move includes setting practical literacy and numeracy activities that involve parents, providing parent literacy and numeracy workshops and sending staff into homes to explain the jargon used in schools. Not all human uses of water are positive. Pollution and mismanage- ment have threatened the water supply of this pla- net. It is important we manage water supplies more carefully not just for ourselves but to maintain healthy ecosystems. Earth’s Water Resources Although water is seem- ingly abundant, especially with the recent constant rain, there is a real issue in the amount of fresh water available to us. Over 70% of our Earth’s surface is covered by water but 97.5% of all water on Earth is salt water, leaving only 2.5% as fresh water. Nearly 70% of that fresh water is in the form of ice and permanent snow cover in mountainous regions, the Antarctic and Arctic regions. Most of the remainder is present as soil moisture, or lies in deep underground aquifers as Water is an essential element. We depend on it but we take it for granted and we waste it. We expect to turn on the tap and out it comes: clean, clear plentiful water. However the demand on water for food production, energy, industrial and domestic uses is increasing. WATER WORLD WATER USAGE FACTS The UN suggests that each person needs 20-50 litres of water a day to ensure their basic needs for drinking, cooking and cleaning. The world’s six billion people use 54% of all the accessible freshwater contained in rivers, lakes and underground aquifers. 783 million people do not have access to clean water 2 out of 3 people will be living with water shortages by 2025.
