December 3, 2017 First Sunday of Advent

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Welcome to the beginning of a new Year of Grace! If it seems to you that this year’s Advent season is unusually short, you are correct. This Advent is as brief as it could possibly be, a mere three weeks and then one day, the Fourth Sunday of Advent. It is a good reminder that we must always be preparing for the coming of Christ with a sense of urgency.

The Gospel readings for the Second and Third Sundays of Advent provide us with the familiar, motivating message of John the Baptist: prepare the way of the Lord and make straight His paths. We can open wide the doors of our hearts to receive Christ by the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We can provide Christ a warm welcome into our hearts by beautifully decorating them with acts of charity for the poor and the lonely. These are things we normally do during Advent, and should continue to do throughout the entire year, in order to remain ever watchful for our Savior’s coming in glory.

Then our very lives will be an expression of our longing for

God’s Kingdom. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! With my best wishes and personal regards, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos Bishop Emeritus of Jefferson City Apostolic Administrator

With great joy, we celebrated the following

sacraments last week:

Baptisms: Easton Hall, son of Gavin & Anna Hall; Kelly Campbell, daughter of Dylan & Courtney Campbell; Isaiah Lammers, son of Eleazar Barragan Garcia & Claire Lammers; Marlowe Fouch, daughter of David & Megan Fouch Confirmation: Noah Lammers Full Initiation into the Church: Michael Groves "God, our Creator, cherish these faithful. Jesus, our Savior; protect them. Holy Spirit, our comforter, strengthen them."

Youth Support Group Forming The parish will be offering a support group opportunity for children who have experienced a significant change in their lives. Those changes could include (but are not limited to) the following: parents' separation, divorce, death, immigration, family member's military service, having a parent incarcerated, a parent with drug or alcohol problem, remarriage, etc. The group will meet every Tuesday in the school library conference room from 3:15-4 p.m. This is a 12 week program. We will begin on December 12. The group will not meet over Christmas break, but felt it would nice to go ahead and get started for a little extra support before Christmas. The group is designed for children ages 8-14. The curriculum we will be following is called Children in Change. The curriculum uses an educational and support group model with children who have experienced significant changes in their families. All though each change will be quite different, the curriculum allows for each to be able share safely their experiences with their families. Those with questions may contact Logan Oswald Comegys at 660-537-4777 or [email protected]. A New Way of Life Father Bill has announced that our parish will adopt the way of life practiced by the Wichita Diocese. Parishes are challenged to become places of hospitality, prayer, formation, and service. Future articles will discuss plans for

implementation, but first a few bullet points to highlight the success in the Wichita Diocese. There is a greater spirit and overall unity in

the parishes Weekly Mass attendance is over twice the

national average High level of volunteerism in churchs,

schools, and other ministries Greater desire for prayer and growth of 24

hour Adoration Chapels Large increase in the number of vocations.

In 2014 there were over 50 seminarians and there are more active priests under the age of 50 than over

Catholic education is available for every child desiring education and it is the responsibility of all parishioners

Parishioners commit annually to the sharing of their gifts out of their need to do so, rather than committing to do so when there is a need

Parish Nursing Course The Faith Based Health Ministry Network (a program sponsored by Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri) will sponsor a parish nursing course in Spring 2018. Date and time to be determined. This is a course for registered nurses who wish to become parish nurses--also called faith community nurses. We are trying to determine if there is enough interest in the diocese to have a course. Those interested may contact Susan Devaney at 573-696-1424 or email [email protected].

Formed.org Pick of the Week: “ANIMA” In his keynote session from the 2017 FOCUS SEEK Conference, Archbishop Charles Chaput articulates his advice for how Catholics can build bridges to reach people of different ideologies. He warns against being an obstacle to these bridges by indulging in pride, fear, and the noisiness of the culture. Archbishop Chaput equips his listeners with the inspiration, encouragement, and practical advice necessary to take on the work of evangelization in their own families, friend groups, and communities. Go to www.formed.org, search “Focus Seek Conference.” If you haven’t registered on formed.org, follow the instructions to set up an account and use our parish code: MR7FGW.

Treasures From Our Tradition Advent calendars appear now in many homes, and newfangled formats are even available online. Children have fun opening the doors and windows keyed to the days counting down to Christmas. Behind each door is a picture related to the Christmas mystery, perhaps a scripture verse or saying, but more and more these days something totally unconnected to religious life, like a small toy or a chocolate treat, appears instead. The Advent calendar is not very old as traditions go. We can trace it back to German-speaking Christians, both Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans might have originated the custom by placing chalk marks on doors starting December 1, lighting candles every day, or placing a new religious picture on the wall each day during Advent. The oldest known hand-made calendar goes back to 1851, and the first printed ones appeared in 1908 in Germany with Bible verses behind the doors. By far the most interesting calendar is a building, the town hall (Rathaus) of Gengenbach in Germany’s Black Forest. Every year the townspeople invite an illustrator of children’s books to create twenty-four paintings or motifs for each of the twenty-four main windows of the building. Every night the people gather to see a new window opened and illuminated. Very few commercial Advent calendars pay much attention to the core values of our liturgical calendar: the pivotal place of Sunday, the importance of Advent feasts like Saint Lucy and Saint Nicholas, and the clear shift in tone on December 17 from Advent longing and preparation toward imminent hope in Christ’s coming. That kind of creativity is left up to you!
