Readings for the Week

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

SUNDAY: The Nativity of St. John the Baptist MONDAY: Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time WEDNESDAY: St. Cyril of Alexandria THURSDAY: St. Irenaeus FRIDAY: Ss. Peter and Paul SATURDAY: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church; Blessed Virgin Mary

The Church is fortunate that Irenaeus was involved in many of its controversies in the second

century. He was a student, well trained no doubt, with great patience in investigating, tremendously protective of apostolic teaching, but prompted more by a desire to win over his opponents than to prove them in error.

Liturgical Ministers: June 30 & July 1 In Charge of Altar Linens for June: S. Chrisman; July: D. King This weekend, we will celebrate the solemnity of SS. Peter & Paul. The readings will be from Friday, June 29, and not the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The 11 o’clock Mass will be celebrated by Bishop McKnight. A potluck will follow in the church hall. Everyone is invited to attend.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Formed Pick of the Week Ode to Saint Cecilia tells the dramatic story of a modest young woman from Rome whose life was transcended time to influence poets, composers, sculptors, and painters. A patron saint to some, a muse to others, Cecilia has inspired George F. Handel, John Dryden, Henry Purcell, Stefan Maderno, John Waterhouse, Paul Simon, and scores of other artists over the past 20 centuries. Set against the backdrop of the great sacrifice of her martrydom,”Ode to Saint Cecilia” is ultimately a celebration of the important role of the arts in showing us the love of God through profound beauty. To explore this feature, visit formed.org. To register on formed.org, follow the instructions to set up a free account. Use our parish code: MR7FGW.

The parish, after much study and deliberation with the school advisory board, has purchased two low mileage vans for school and parish use. Funding for the purchase came from two donors outside the parish. One donor has regularly provided support for the school and the other donor has, for the past two years, pro-vided substantial funding to each diocesan school. No funds from general operating were a part of the purchase. The vans will be used for school activities such as field trips and athletic events. They are also available for any parish-related activity. Policies and procedures have been adopted to cover usage, including the licensing of drivers.

Sweet Thanks The Daughters of Isabella thanks everyone who helped with the Father’s Day Cinnamon Roll sales: those who

helped bake, those who sold the rolls & those who bought them. Your help & support with this

fundraiser is greatly appreciated!

Due to the Fourth of July holiday, submissions for the July 8 bulletin are due to the office by Friday, June 29 at noon. Please send information to: [email protected]. Thank you!

God Squad is headed to Camp Maccabee Sunday, July 8

A summer outing to Camp Maccabee in Camdenton is being planned for the God Squad Youth Group (fifth to seventh grades). Those attending will get to enjoy the obstacle course, ropes course, mud run, and giant water slide. We will be going Sunday, July 8. The exact time is TBD. We will need parent drivers.
