Anything the guy-in-the-garage needs while I’m on deadline for the magazine is never too much to ask.

In his mind. Take today for instance. Just a few pages away from being done with the January issue, he finishes up his portion of the proofreading, then heads down to his shop. I’m hard at work, the last day or two is always the hardest, because you reach a point where you think you’ll never be finished. My phone rings. I can tell it’s a call from his shop. “Did I leave my glass of Mountain Dew up there on my desk?” he asks. I look around and sure enough, there it is. Ice cold. Refreshing. Mountain Dew. “Yep,” it’s here. I say. There is a pause. Then “I knew I left it up there.” Then another pause. You can tell, this is a big challenge for him What to do? He’s at the shop working on a customer’s motorcycle and his Mountain Dew is at the house, about a three minute walk in the cold wind. He’s thirsty. Needs that liquid refreshment. That pick-me-up the Dew provides. Still the pause. So I finally say, “Do you want me to bring it down?” He comes to life. “Hey yeah! That will be a good chance for you to take a break!” Oh brother. This guy. And so I took off for the three minute walk in the freezing cold windy weather carrying an ice cold drink. Of course those of you who live in snow country may not think 59 degrees is freezing, but since its 61 degrees colder than the temps here just a few months ago, I consider it freezing. That was today. Over the weekend my office was lively with the guy-in-the-garage corresponding with people on his computer and the 9-year-old granddaughter sitting at my side trying to solve a Nancy Drew mystery on the second computer at my desk. I’m working away. Editing articles. Designing layouts. Identifying racers for picture captions while at the same

time telling the guy-in-the-garage how to spell words for his email messages and checking to see if he is right guessing which artist is singing the Christmas songs I’m listening to on Pandora. The granddaughter is frustrated with the difficult-to-solve mystery and also needs assistance, which I try to offer all while editing and designing.

Just another day at the office. But when time comes for the guy-in-the-garage to go back to proofreading, all the world comes to a stop. The music gets turned off, the computers turned down, the phone calls taken in another room far from where he is and no one

can talk. Essentially all of life for, say a square mile, around where he sits must be silent. Because he can’t concentrate if there is noise while he’s proofreading. I often wonder if he ever sees the irony of what goes on in the office while I’m working compared to when he is working. I suppose now while he’s proofreading this article it might give him a clue. It’s just that as many times as I’ve read time management tips that say to stop multi-tasking because you can’t be productive that way, I would have to say that if I stopped multi-tasking then nothing would get done at all. At least nothing that I’m responsible for. It’s not that the guy-in-the-garage has no respect for me or my work it’s more than likely because this is how we’ve rolled for all these years and maybe it never occurs to him its fairly difficult for me to concentrate on so many things at once, but I just do it. And maybe I need to understand that he just isn’t wired to multi-task. We love living in the desert, but it’s a long way from just about everywhere, so when its time to head out for errands, the list usually grows longer by the minute as we schedule the day. The guy-in-the-garage who can put in 10-12 hours a day working on motorcycles or around the desert property shrinks in anguish at the length of time it can take to head into civilization and do errands. I, on the other hand, who can be a living dictionary and amateur detective all while producing a magazine, am used to the 12 hours of errands. In fact I prefer to pack every stop into one day rather than having to head out on another journey just a day or two later. So when he says he’ll go with me to do the weekly errands, I sometimes cringe because I know we’re not going to get everything done. Eight hours into the day he will say he’s ready to go home. However, recently a sick kid on my watch kept me from getting some much needed errands done and with the deadline staring me right in the face I wondered

“just how long can we go without food?” The guy-in-the-garage, motivated by some truck parts that were waiting for him in town, offered to do the grocery shopping so I could keep pounding out the pages. Some of the stores on our route needed to be re-stocked with magazines as well, I mentioned to hin. No problem, he said, just make a list. I helped get him ready to go. Bank deposit (because you might as well do the banking too if you’re going into town), cell phone, debit card, cash and list of about six or seven places he was going to. “Oh and do you have the ice chests and the gas can?” I asked. “Yes,” he said calmly as he headed out the door. And then while I was rushing out the door with the cold drink he forgot, I did the unthinkable. I attempted to add one more task. “Oh why don’t you go ahead and pick up a new pair of jeans too?” I called out from behind him. I can see it now as if it was happening all over again right in front of my face. And to tell the truth I can hardly keep from bursting out laughing. If you’ve ever seen the post office scene in the Grinch Who Stole Christmas with Jim Carrey, you’ll be able to picture exactly what happened. It’s the scene where the Grinch’s dog has just forced him to save Cindy Lou Who from slipping into the gears of the package processing machine. Then as he heads for the door and is almost ready to make his escape she says “Thank you for saving me.” You can hear the sound of a screeching skid as he instantly comes to a stop and then very slowly turns around. And that is exactly what happened when I mentioned the jeans. I’m sure I heard the dirt screeching he stopped so quickly. Then he turned around to look at me. This guy who I have seen spend hours fabricating and machining one tiny little part to make something work better on a motorcycle gets totally overwhelmed at the thought of doing more than five or six errands in a day. And while he didn’t actually say it I could read the Grinch’s next word in his mind: “Wrongo!!!” So I smiled, waved good-bye and assured him that “yes, your cell phone is turned on already.” Don’t want to overwhelm the guy because now it appears that almost anything I need while on deadline is not too much to ask. And getting my errands done and the frig and cupboards restocked without ever leaving my desk made my day. E

DirtbitsApdaly Lopez entered the

2015 SCORE-International Baja 1000 third in points behind

Dougans Engine racers, Tavo Vildosola and Lalo Laguna. With an official second place finish at the Baja 1000, Lopez became the first Mexican national

driver to win the SCORE Trophy Truck and SCORE Overall season points championship. Lopez was first to the finish line in Ensenada, Baja California, but was later penalized twenty minutes for missing

two of the ninety-five virtual checkpoints scattered along the 821.38 mile race course, dropping his finishing time to 16:14:55. The penalties pushed Lopez out of the top spot and overall victory at the legendary race but didn’t take away from his performance in one of the most grueling races in off-road.

Lopez started in ninth position behind Robby Gordon and suffered an early front flat tire but pushed on without any other problems, to battle Rob MacCachren in the final miles. “The race course was really rough and the weather conditions changed in different sections of the course. The course was technical and we had to work to take care of the truck,” commented Lopez. With a win at the Baja 500 earlier this year and his dominating performance at the Baja 1000, Lopez’ overall points championship proves that the #5 Trophy Truck, powered by Dougan’s Racing Engines, is one of the top trucks on the course. At just the age of 20, Lopez joins a list of elite racers that have ever claimed the #1 plate in SCORE-International. About Dougans Racing Engines Dougans Racing Engines specializes in high performance engines for the top off-road competitions including the Best In the Desert and SCORE racing series. With over thirty-five years in the industry, Dougans offers high quality engine packages for trophy trucks, Class 1 trucks and prerunners. We build complete engine packages that have gained a reputation in the racing world as consistent, powerful, dependable winners. Along with our engine packages, we provide dyno testing and personal track support to ensure that our customer’s needs are met all the way to the finish line. At Dougans Racing, customer satisfaction is our top priority and we strive to keep you running hard and winning races mile after mile. E

Denmark Backs Away From Green Energy Posted December 8, 2015By Michael Bastasch

Denmark’s new government will reduce the amount of money it spends on “green” energy by 67

percent, according to a Sunday New York Times article. Denmark and other Nordic countries have long been viewed as environmental utopias, but the government plans to reduce spending on green energy to save money and lower the country’s electricity rates, which are among the world’s highest. Denmark’s government will have a higher than expected budget deficit of 3.3 percent in 2015, triggering the cuts to green energy. This deficit is higher than the 3.0 percent allowed for member countries of the European Union. Denmark’s new cuts will reduce green energy spending from $55 million to $18 million. The New York Times claims that Denmark’s spending reduction will cause job losses. Denmark currently has some of the highest electricity prices in the world at 41 cents per kWh. Electricity in Denmark is almost four times more expensive than in the United States. Impoverished citizens in the lowest Danish income brackets spend about 8.9 percent of their

total budget on electricity. The poorest citizens in neighboring Sweden, which doesn’t subsidize green energy to the same extent, spend only 3.6 percent of their household

budget on electricity. The lowest income brackets in the United States spend a mere 2.9 percent of their household

budget on electricity. The high price of electricity in Denmark means many citizens can’t afford the electricity required to meet day to day living requirements. Raising electricity prices has a massively regressive impact, harming low-income individuals far more than wealthy ones. Poorer, working-class people tend to spend a higher proportion of their income on basic needs like electricity and fuel than the wealthy do. Denmark planned to stop burning all coal, oil and natural gas by 2050, and heavily invested in the wind power industry. Denmark has an incredibly windy climate and began subsidizing wind power heavily in 1973 to reduce dependence on imported oil. Despite more than 40 years of investment and research, Denmark gets a mere 39 percent of its energy from wind power on extremely windy days. Other sources of green energy provide a very low percentage of Denmark’s electricity. Denmark has two major geothermal power plants, but neither produces any electricity.

Gov. Brown Says Only ‘The Coercive Power Of Government’ Can Stop Global WarmingPosted December 8, 2015By Michael Bastasch

California Gov. Jerry Brown is not shy about admitting government force is necessary to get businesses

to come up with the “revolutionary” change to fight global warming. Brown, like other Democratic politicians, is in Paris attending the United Nations global warming summit. Brown supports a global agreement to cut carbon dioxide emissions, and was on a panel with California billionaire Tom Steyer at the Petit Palais (a luxurious art museum) to talk about policies they argue will help humans fight warming. “Tom you used the phrase ‘policy — good policy,’ but I want to unpack that term a little bit,” Brown said Monday. “Inside the policy, you need a law, you need a rule, you need the coercive power of government to say ‘do this.’” “Now you have to be wise and don’t

say something stupid or try to order something stupid, but the fact is the regulations supported by the laws drive innovation,” Brown said. Brown’s state of California is considered by many environmentalists to be a leader in global warming policies. Earlier this year, Brown signed the most aggressive green energy mandate of any U.S. state,

forcing power companies to generate 50 percent of electricity from green sources by 2030. California also has a cap-and-trade program. California gets most of its electricity from natural gas and out of state coal-fired power plants, but the state leads in solar energy generation. Californians pay some of the highest electricity prices in the country at 17.45 cents per kilowatt hour — the national average electricity price is 10.81 cents per kWh. California also has a low-carbon fuel standard which forces refiners to lower the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from gasoline and other transportation fuels. This policy, coupled with Brown’s mandate to cut petroleum use statewide in half by 2030, is putting upward pressure on fuel prices and making the state much more vulnerable to refinery outages. E

Four wheeling naturally involves an orderly process. Driving through difficult terrain far from home is

demanding on drivers and their vehicles. Just like driving on roads, you need a lot of hours behind the wheel to become adept off road. Many of my articles are dedicated to reviewing various aspects of four wheeling. This column reviews several more important fundamentals that can be helpful if you are just starting four wheeling.

Shift into and out of 4L (4 low) properly It’s easy to forget this step while maneuvering through rough terrain. It’s quite simple, but you can mess up your transfer box pretty good if you don’t follow this suggestion. Bring your vehicle to a stop (or near stop), and shift the transmission into neutral. Then you can safely and easily shift into 4L. Shift the transmission back into drive, and continue on. Repeat when you need to shift out of 4L. Most of the newer vehicles with electronic selection of 4 low will let you turn the knob but it will not be in 4 low unless you start with the transmission in neutral. If you overlook the flashing light on the dash and press on thinking you are in 4L, you will likely get stuck. Those vehicles with levers will grind or be extremely difficult if not impossible to engage into 4L. Unless you have a classic “collectors” vintage 4-wheel drive vehicle with the older all-gear transfer case, I would take it back to the dealer if you cannot shift into 4 low from a dead stop. If you get stuck while driving in 4 high (like sand dunes), many times you can drive out by shifting to 4 low. Then you have enough power to turn the wheels. You are stuck, so moving the vehicle as a requirement to shift into 4 low is not an option! Electronic shifting transfer cases may need a bit of movement to engage. Hopefully on your vehicle that requires just that slight bump you get to shift from neutral to drive. One side note: You can shift from 2 wheel drive (2H) to 4 High and back again “on the fly.” This means you can shift while driving at any speed. I have done it at 70 mph with no ill effect. Check your owner’s manual for their suggestion on the top speed - most likely 50 mph. Vehicles are getting more and more complicated and there may be a reason to limit the top speed for shifting on the fly.

Know your vehicle’s lowest points of clearance As you approach obstacles, paint a mental picture of your vehicle’s low points. Use that knowledge to navigate around (or over) the obstacles without getting hung up. We recommend picking

the 3 lowest spots on the front axle and the 3 lowest on the rear axle. You can do more but it becomes difficult to process it all in real time. Whether you have solid axles front and rear or independent front suspension makes a difference. On a solid

axle, the lowest point is the bottom of the differential. That’s usually only 9 inches off the ground. The front differential also gives you a low point, but it’s not in line with the rear differential. Note which side it is on. The other low points (front and back) are the shock mounts or control arms that hold the axle into position. In an independent front suspension vehicle, the back is the same as with a solid axle. However, up-front the lowest points are just inside each wheel. The center of the vehicle is pretty flat and doesn’t present any low points. But don’t line up the center in front with a 12” rock. The rear diff will not clear it.

Know where your front wheels are Most drivers have a pretty good idea of where the left tire is, but are usually off a foot or two regarding the right. It is critical while off-road that you can place your tires exactly on the obstacle as you planned even when the obstacle disappears into your blind spot. Have someone place their hand on the front face of the right front tire and lift it straight up until you can see where that point is on the hood. It can be helpful, too,

if they locate the center line of the tire and show you the point on the hood that is the intersection of the centerline and front face of the tire. Remember the spots. If you are really having difficulty remembering the spot, we can put “training wheels” on (so to speak). Get a small telescoping magnet from the auto store and put the magnet on the spot with the handle straight up. Then practice, practice, practice until you can place the front tires exactly where you want - almost every time.

Know your blind spots Speaking of blind spots, the most important one is out front. On average, the front blind spot extends about 17 feet from the face of your left front tire. (Add 12 to 18 inches more distance for the right tire.) You can reduce this distance as much as 3 to 5 feet by doing what I call “active” looking. That means leaning forward as much as possible and stretching your neck out.

Three factors influence the size of the blind spot: how tall you are, how your seat is positioned, and the design of your vehicle. You cannot do much about the vehicle design or your height, but you can change the seat. Lift it up and bring the seat back forward. If your seat does not have adjustments for height, have the seat mounts modified to permanently raise it a few inches. Remember that as you approach a rock, it will eventually enter your blind spot. Now you see (no pun intended) why it’s useful to know where your tires are, as well as your low points.

Throttle control while in 4 low The first time in low range, a driver’s instinct is to push the accelerator like you normally do. Low range has a lot of torque and power so this causes the vehicle to

leap forward. The driver backs off on the gas. Due to the low gearing, the vehicle slows down immediately - too slow now. The driver hits the gas again, with the result being a jerky motion. For 4 wheel drive, you need a nice, smooth throttle. Remind yourself that when in 4L, apply lighter pressure to the accelerator. Over time you’ll educate your right leg. For more on the effect of a smooth throttle (or lack of), see the article on “Cobblestone” (www.4x4training.com/Articles/DrivingSkills/Cobblestone.html).

Fuel usage Because your mileage drops while off road, especially in 4L, it’s good to calculate your off-road fuel mileage. You’ll find that mileage drops anywhere from 2 to 5 mpg while off-road. Of course, that affects your range based on the fuel in your vehicle’s tank. But remember you also bring along a spare fuel can. (You do, don’t you?!) Assume you bring a 5 gallon gas can.

At 10 mpg, that gas will get you 50 miles. At 15 mpg, you’ll go for 75 miles, and so forth. Compute Off-Road Mileage: Fuel up as close to the trail head as possible. Gas up again afterward, and calculate your fuel mileage. Your off-road driving involved a combination of 4L and 4H, but at least you’ll have a reasonable average to work with later. Sounds to me like a legitimate reason for a day of 4-wheeling. “Dear, I am going 4-wheeling. Tom says I have to compute my off-road mileage. I don’t want to risk your and the kids’ safety by running out of gas.”

Rehearse your contingency steps Many obstacles require you to get out of the vehicle and recon (look at/walk) the terrain. That is how you avoid falling off a cliff you can’t see from behind the wheel.

It gives you more time to plan the line you want to take and assess the risks. Add to that planning what steps you will take if results on the ground do not go as planned. If you plan in your mind in advance the specific skills you will use on this obstacle, you can react quickly. My favorite contingency is - stop, back out (if you can) and recon again. Another example: You are looking down a steep, off camber, rutted slope. It appears to have good traction, but you’re concerned that your wheels might slide. If so, you’d turn sideways and roll over. If you still feel the risk is not high

enough to turn around, your contingency plan might be: If the wheels start to slide, I am going to let up on the foot brake pressure. If the wheels are still sliding, I’ll power up enough to gain control and take any lumps from hitting the bottom too fast. At first glance, these tips may appear daunting. You probably wonder how you’ll remember it all, especially the vehicle’s low points. Over time these will become second nature. As you drive a trail, your brain will work through the various processes and steps, and you will automatically perform these steps. The result will be a more enjoyable off-road experience.

My Dad, John, lives on a boat down off the docks in San Diego Bay. Last week while

walking down the dock he heard a whimpering noise coming from the water. After looking around, he saw an old dog in the water, with just barely the nose sticking out above the surface. The dog looked like it was just about to go under. He reached out and got the dog out of the water and up on to the dock. He knew where the owner of that dog lived on a nearby dock. He took the old pup over to the owner and found out that indeed, the dog was very old and had a lot arthritis. The owner is a veterinarian and mentioned that the dog would lose it’s balance on occasion and fall in the water. Someone would fish the pooch out of the water after awhile. The odd thing they noticed was after the dog had swam for awhile, it would be able to run around like a young dog for a week or so. Then, the old dog would start to get stiff again with sore, arthritic hips, legs and spine. It could no longer hop around like it could when it first got fished out of the water. The dog would eventually lose it’s balance and fall off the dock again over the next few weeks. My Dad noticed his 14-year-old Akita rescue pound dog would swim out in the bay water when he took her for walks, chasing around sea lions for a spell. When his old dog came to shore after those swims, he also noticed his dog’s bad hip seemed to clear up for weeks at a time. Only to return to the classic bad, sore hip and limp in a few

weeks of not swimming, just mainly sitting around the docks with the

occasional slow walk on the leash. It seemed a bit of a mystery as to why the dogs were so vibrant and could really move around so well after swimming and nearly drowning on occasion. But, this was no mystery to me. In all mammals, that includes us folks, there are movable, flexible joints, like our spines, hips, knees, elbows, ankles and all of these joints are called “Synovial Joints”. These joints are protected by a capsule of tissue, a membrane, that completely surrounds these joints. It makes a “grease seal” if you will allow the analogy, for you gear heads out there reading this information. The tissue that makes the seal around each and every one of those joints is of course called the synovial membrane. The synovial membrane produces or secretes a fluid that is of course called synovial fluid (SF). This SF is the WD-40 of our own joints and the same for all mammals including those swimming dock dogs. SF lubricates the joints and the normally smooth Teflon-like cartilage that lines all of those joints. In addition, SF provides the only nutrition to that cartilage, including all fluid hydration that keeps the joint from going dry -- think no oil/grease in a ball joint. It also supplies oxygen that all living cells need to stay alive and healthy. See, after we humans turn about 30 years old, all the small arteries that used to bring blood to our cartilages that line the joints start to atrophy. They are no longer there and we lose the nutrients the blood supplies. Therefore, it becomes very important that

the synovial tissue produces the synovial fluid to keep the cartilage cells healthy and living. All cells die without a constant supply of nutrients and oxygen. Cartilage is one of the only tissues that does not have a direct blood supply! Cartilage depends in part, on movement of the joint to get the nutrition and oxygen it needs to keep the cells healthy. Well, guess what folks? As any given healthy synovial joint is moved, like with exercise, including swimming which is low to no impact, the synovial tissue produces the synovial fluid! Sit around, do nothing and those joints do not get lubricated as well as they do with movement. With aging and trauma, the cartilage lining and cartilage pads (meniscus) can become brittle, cracked, torn, worn out and thin. This can lead to

pain and inflammation in the joint with degenerative arthritis, adhesion’s, limited motion and function. Those old sore knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, ankles and the spine as well, all benefit from movement. The swimming provides super motion with no impact to the joint surfaces. That is why these old dogs did so well after they had swam for over 20 minutes or more! Then, as they laid around the docks for another few weeks, all their soreness and stiffness would start to set back in until they swam again. Most any type of movement is good and better than doing nothing at all. Lower impact types of movement are easier on the joints and poses the least risk of additional insult, irritation and re-injury to the joints. Bicycling, elliptical exercise machines and swimming are

good examples of low impact exercises. Jogging, running, heavy weights, and jumping rope are examples of impact exercises that could further aggravate an already compromised joint and it’s cartilage linings. So, people get sore and stiff and do less and less exercise which is generally the wrong thing to do. It’s easy to sit and take pills but that does not have a good outcome in many a case unless it is a new, acute injury to the joint that needs rest for awhile. Rest also is needed for Rheumatoid Arthritis. The high dollar race horses and professional athletes often have access to warm water whirlpools with treadmills in them so the exercise and therapy will be most effective. Many of us sit for hours behind a desk, five or more days a week. Muscles and joints get sore and stiff, even without injuries. My own knees are best after I bicycle and swim on a consistent basis. If I stop those regular activities, my 57-year-old motocross knees are a painful, stiff mess until I get back into the routine. Starting and keeping an exercise routine is the challenge for most people. But sitting there using pills and thinking of joint replacement surgery is not much fun either. Movement is so important that about 30 years ago the Constant Passive Motion (CPM) machine was invented. Folks would go and have a knee or hip replacement surgery and they would wake up after the surgery with their knee or leg in a machine that would gently be moving the joint slowly back and forth in a safe, limited motion. This not only sped up the recovery times and improved outcomes but also helps prevent blood clots and adhesions in the joint. Before that, many folks were just put in a cast or rigid brace with no movement. This is still necessary for injuries which require the injury to not move at all for proper recovery and any instability issues. Those folks will have a lot more atrophy of the supportive joint tissues such as ligaments, tendons and muscle, compared to the folks that get to use a CPM. In general, it’s the old “use it or lose it” saying. Low impact types of exercise and movement are best for our sore joints. Younger and/or exceptional older folks can have impact type exercises but one still has to use caution as the impact sports and exercises, do cause wear and tear at a higher rate than low impact. Supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfates at about 1500 mg/day with about 500 mg of Vitamin C may help some folks with cartilage and or joint issues. Be aware some of these products are made from shell fish. It takes about 30 to 60 days of consistent supplement use to feel any effect for most folks. I’ve been taking it for over 30 years as I severely injured my knees at ages 28 or 29 and now I’m 57, still riding dirt bikes. It has worked for me but it is not a cure-all. Of course, some wear and tear or injuries are too severe to use the information I’ve posted here. But, even post surgery on any joint, these courses of treatment can help and if used consistently, may help avoid joint replacement surgery in the first place.

Feinstein BillThis month I would like to talk

about federal legislation that Diane Feinstein and Paul Cook have

introduced. It is known as the California Desert Conservation and Recreation Act of 2015 (S.414). It amends the California Desert Protection Act of 1994 (S22). This is the third time Feinstein has attempted to pass this legislation and she really wants it to go this time. There is a large area of land out in the California desert that she and some of her supporters really want to protect by designating as national monuments. The driving force behind this is that the BLM has received permit applications to put renewable energy on this land. They don't want renewable energy development on this land and have gone to Feinsten for help protecting it.

The bill has a variety of actions, including designating national monuments, wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, a number of miles of trails opened and closed, and federal designations for five OHV open areas. The bill has stuff we really don't like (wilderness), stuff we don't care so much about (rivers and monuments) and stuff we really want (OHV open areas and trails designated).

We don't like wilderness because no mechanized travel is allowed there, not even bicycles or wheel chairs. There will be no new legal trails put in wilderness. The monuments won't close any existing trails, but the real truth will come out when their management plans are created in the next few years. The OHV open area designations will make these areas much stronger. Right now they are open

because the BLM allows it. Should a conflict arise, we could lose. With Federal designations, these areas would be much harder to close. If you look at the bill carefully, you

will see a net increase in miles of trails created. Feinstein added sections to help get OHV people to support this bill. Some environmentalists hate this bill because

it does help OHV. Some off-roaders hate this bill because of the wilderness and other designations. So if OHV leadership doesn't love this legislation, why would they support it? Because there is a not so veiled threat that the president will use his power under the Antiquities Act to designate the monuments and not give OHV anything. If this happens, it could take a long time, if ever, to designate these open areas. So Congressman Cook, has introduced very similar, but not identical, legislation in the House of Representitives. SDORC and a number of other OHV organizations

support this legislation. Could this legislation be better for us? Of course it could. But in our current political system, this may be the best we can get, and it is pretty good. E

Staying consistent and relatively conservative, the desert racing ‘dream team’ of Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren

and San Diego’s Andy McMillin rolled like Rockstars, benefitting from racing good fortune to overcome a typically challenging 821.38-mile course and over 200 competitors, driving to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory at the 48th annual SCORE Baja 1000. When the results became official after review of the data loggers in each finishing vehicle by SCORE officials on Sunday morning, the MacCachren/A. McMillin duo had rocketed to a memorable race around the northern part of Mexico’s mysterious and majestic Baja California peninsula. The daring duo finished the mentally-draining, physically grueling race that started and finished in Ensenada in 15 hours, 58 minutes and 33 seconds while averaging a solid 51.41 miles per hour in the No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150. In winning the iconic Granddaddy of

all desert races for the second straight year, they defeated a field of 239 starters in cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads but needed a little assist at the end to pull it out. Finishing second physically, the review of the data loggers and subsequent penalties gave MacCachren his eighth class win and third overall title in this race and McMillin his fifth overall and class win in this legendary event. The starting grid included 31 starters in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks. The season finale of the five-race 2015 SCORE World Desert Championship, this year was a loop race, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, 65 miles south of the U.S. Border at San Diego.

OVERALL PODIUM A pair of RPM Racing SCORE Trophy Trucks with Mexican drivers finished second and third overall behind USA’s MacCachren/A.

McMillin duo. Physically crossing the finish line in first for a possible victory, Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez of Tecate, just 20 who won this year’s SCORE Baja 500, finished second in the No. 5 RPM Racing Chevy Rally Truck in a time of 16:14:55 with an average speed of 50.55 mph. Third overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 17 RPM Racing was Mexico’s Eduardo ‘Lalo’ Laguna in 16:17:23 at 50.44 mph.

UDALL’S MOTORCYCLE MAGIC Taking the overall and unlimited class motorcycle win for the third time in the last four years in this race was the team led by Colton Udall, Yucca Valley, Calif. Teaming up for the victory this year on the powerful ride through Baja was Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif., and Justin Jones, Murrieta, Calif. Riding a Honda CRF450X, finishing in a corrected time of 16:29:08 with an average speed of 49.82 mph. In splitting up the race, Udall started and

rode to race mile 133. Jones took over at that point, went to race mile 356 where Samuels got on the bike and rode to race mile 563 and Udall got back on for the final section of just under 259 miles. The win gave Honda its 25th overall win in the SCORE Baja 1000. After his team’s third win of the season, Udall commented, “Taking back the 1x (as season point champion) is a lot of hard work and our team has been working super hard all year to get this done so it feels amazing to be here at the finish line with a giant time gap. I started ninth off the line and kept pushing away and got by a bunch of guys except for Shane Esposito on the 45x (Rider of record-Francisco Arredondo). Justin (Jones) passed him when he crashed and we led ever since.” “We nailed our pits, hung our lights perfectly and everything went really good. Surprisingly any issue we had we patched up really well. It was continuous miles and staying focused because if your head breaks down you make a giant mistake and the bike gets bent up.”

CHAMPIONSHIP RUN In earning the overall victory of the SCORE Baja 1000, MacCachren earned his record 13th career SCORE Trophy Truck race win and Andy McMillin picked up his eighth career SCORE Trophy Truck race win. With Jason Voss as the team’s third driver for last year’s championship peninsula run in this race, MacCachren felt two drivers would be sufficient this year and it was. MacCachren, a six-time motorsports All-America driver, started the race and drove the first 470 miles before turning over the wheel to the talented McMillin to drive the rest of the way to the finish line.

ROB MAC QUOTES Said MacCachren after the race, “We started off running a good conservative pace. This morning was really slow and Ricky Johnson (second driver for Justin Matney) started first but he knew he had control of the race and he was going pretty slow. It was pre-run speed but it helped us with gas mileage so we were going to stretch our first pit to 200 miles. Ricky went out on the beach and the pace picked up a little bit. Unfortunately I got a right-rear flat and lost a couple of spots. We worked our way back up to Carlos Lopez’s dust and we had to pull into our pit which allowed Cameron Steele to get by and that hurt us. The sun was getting ready to set, the wind stopped and the dust was hanging.” “I would be within 30 seconds of Cameron and then a few miles down the road I would be five minutes back because the dust hangs so badly in the silt. We struggled with that for about 150 miles. When I gave Andy the truck today I got on the radio and told him that the truck was in great shape. My job was to get the truck down the track, keep it in good shape and give him something good to deal with and if he needed to pick up time he could go do that. He ended up reeling the guys in and though he wasn’t able to pass them, he stayed close and never gave up. I had an early flat and got behind a little bit and over the radio my crew said to me “you can do this.” “That gave me a lot of hope and kept me fighting. Winning the SCORE Baja 1000 is like no other feeling in the world. When you win this race you know that you’ve accomplished something. We’ve got a very powerful team between the two of us and we both know how to win the race and the guys who work on the truck do what it takes.”

ANDY MCMILLIN QUOTES McMillin said at the finish line, “In the last 200 miles I knew we had to pass Lopez to win and put some time on him as well. I was pushing really hard and the truck gave more than I really could ask from it. I was giving it my all with every gear hitting the rev limiter and really driving as hard as I could. My dad (multi-time SCORE race winner Scott McMillin) said while we were out there “don’t give up because you never know what can happen before you get to the finish line.” “Here we are at the finish and it looks like he was right. I think Rob and I are complementary drivers and have similar styles. Rob has a tremendous team of professionals that work on his truck and prepare for the races and it makes all the difference. When I get in

this truck I feel next to invincible. Up until the very last corner I told myself that anything can happen out here. It is Mexico, it is the middle of the night and you just never know. You have to stay mentally focused out here because there are so many things happening so quickly that if you lose one second of concentration it could end your race.”

ATV WINNER & QUICK FACTS Winning the overall ATV title for the second straight year was the veteran team led by Mexico’s Javier Robles Jr of Guadalupe Victoria. The Robles Jr team covered the course on a Honda TRX450R in 19:02:03, averaging 45.15 mph. Co-riders with Robles Jr on this difficult challenge were Josh Row, El Cajon, Calif./Felipe Velez, San Felipe, Mexico/Jorie Williams, Longview, Washington.

In the battle of car and truck manufacturers, Ford now leads with 11 chassis wins and extended its lead with 17 engine wins in this race. The top 10 overall 4-wheel finishers in Ensenada were all from the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks.

BFGOODRICH TIRES UNMATCHED In 2015, BFGoodrich Tires is celebrating its 40th year as a major player in SCORE Baja racing. In addition to being the official tire of SCORE International for nearly four decades, BFGoodrich Tires has produced the tire of choice for 27 of the overall 4-wheel vehicle winners in the SCORE Baja 1000, including 27 of the last 30 years that featured a record-run of 20 straight from 1986 through 2005. In total, BFGoodrich Tires is now the tire

of choice for the overall 4-wheel vehicle winner in 85 SCORE Baja races including 31 in the SCORE Baja 500. In this year’s race, they were the tire of choice for all of the top 10 overall 4-wheel vehicle finishers, nine in SCORE Trophy Truck and one in Trophy Truck Spec. BFGoodrich Tires also provides unmatched pit support for pre-registered racers using their tires with six full-service pit areas along the race course out of and back into Ensenada along with complete radio relay the entire 821.38 miles.

SCORE TROPHY TRUCK SHOWDOWN For the second straight year, Mexico’s Gus Vildosola Jr of Mexicali, entered the race leading the SCORE Trophy Truck season points in the No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford

Raptor. Last year his hopes of being the first Mexican National to win the SCORE Overall points title were stopped with a mechanical issue that forced him out early in the race. This year he finished sixth overall and sixth in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE Baja 1000 after mechanical issues slowed him down again, costing him the season championship for the second straight year.

PERFECT SEASON Two-time national sports car racing champion Larry Connor of Miamisburg, Ohio, finished a perfect season in Trophy Truck Spec by winning his class over 16 starters for his fifth race win of the season in

his Chevy Silverado. Also finishing the season with an unprecedented SCORE Baja 1000 victory was SCORE Young Gun Chad Broughton, just 20 of Scotts Valley, Calif., who won Class 3000 for the fifth time in a BajaLite-Chevy.

NEAR PERFECT SEASON Winning four races this season including their win in the SCORE Baja 1000 were Victor Cesena, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), the Class 30 motorcycle team (riders over 30 years old) of Mark Winkelman, Cedar Hill, Texas on a Honda CRF450X and the Sportsman Quad team of Juan Dominguez, Yuma, Ariz. on a Honda TRX450R.

TRIPLE TIMERS With their wins in this race, earning their third class win in five races in 2015 were Victor Cesena, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (Class 5, VW Baja Bug), Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif. (With Terry Hui in this race, Class 19, Polaris RZR XP4 1000), Aaron Ampudia, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 1/2-1600) and Marc Prince, Malibu, Calif. (Class 50, Honda CRF450X), Javier Robles Jr, Vicente Guerrero, Mexico (Pro Quad, Honda TRX450R) and Derek Fletcher, Abingdon, Va. (Sportsman Buggy, RPM-Chevy).

TWIN WINS Picking up his second win of the season in the SCORE World Desert Championship were Cody Reid, Apple Valley, Calif. (Class 10, Custom-Chevy), Dan Chamlee Summerland, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger) and Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif. (Unlimited M/C, Honda CRF450X).

MORE CLASS WINNERS Among the other racers winning a class for the first time in 2015 were John Walker, Guam (Class 1, Kreger-Chevy), Hernando Martinez, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 5-1600, VW Baja Bug, Rick Sanchez, Chula Vista, Calif. Seagrove-VW), Rod Hall, Reno, Nev. (Stock Full, Hummer H1), Terry Hui, Canada (Class 19, Polaris RZR XP4 1000), Bob Bower, Lake Forest, Calif. (Baja Challenge, BTC-Subaru), Boe Huckins, Pueblo West, Colo., (SCORE Ironman, KTM 450SXF), Collie Potter, Las Vegas (Class 40, Honda CRF450X) and Richard Jackson, Acton, Calif. (Class 60, Honda CRF450X).

SCORE…OH, WHAT A COURSE SCORE put together another memorable race course, this one for a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain the northern state of the majestically mysterious Baja California peninsula has to offer. Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course traveled in a counter-clockwise direction. It included the approximate 35 mile stretch to Ojos Negros which is used in both directions. Outgoing, the course headed Southwest from Ojos through Santo Tomas and then ran South along the picturesque Pacific Ocean for over 100 miles. It featured seven checkpoints, the 821.38-mile course covered both sides of the peninsula paralleled Highway 1 for nearly half of the race, looping south back to the Pacific and then crossing over to the other side of the peninsula below Puertocitos. The course then headed back North along the tranquil Sea of Cortez, past San Felipe paralleling Highway 5 and up to the junction with Highway 3. The rugged course then paralleled Highway 3 traveling west then northwest back into Ojos Negros and to the finish line in Ensenada.

TIME TRAVEL This year’s race started for the 41st time and finished for the 23rd time in Ensenada. The race started and finished on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de

Todos Santos in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

GLOBAL INTEREST In addition to the 30 States represented on the entry list, racers entered from 17 countries. In addition to the United States, racers came from Austria, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the US Territory of Guam.

HALL-MARKS ALL OVER BAJA This year’s race commemorated the achievements of legendary desert racers like Rod Hall. Hall, who turned 78 on race weekend (Sunday, Nov. 22), won Stock Full in the Rod Hall Racing H1 Hummer. Hall now has a race record 23 class wins (including one overall win in 1972) and he is the only racer who has competed in all 48 SCORE Baja 1000 races.

Helping Hall reach another milestone in his illustrious career were his son Chad Hall, who now has nine class wins in this year, Damien Michelin and Mike Winkel.

SCORE BAJA 1000 MULTI CLASS WINNERS Among the racers adding to their SCORE Baja 1000 legacy of multiple class wins with their class victories this year were: Rod Hall (23 total class wins, Stock Full), Richard Jackson (14, Class 60), Jim O’Neal (11, Class 30), Rob MacCachren (8, SCORE Trophy Truck), Dan Chamlee (7, Class 7), Wayne Matlock (6, Class 19).

DONE DEAL After review of the data logging devices used by each vehicle in the race and with time penalties assessed accordingly for course deviations and/or speeding on short pavement sections used as part of the official race course, the results were declared official by SCORE International officials early Sunday evening.

As the finish line in Ensenada closed Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3:48 p.m. PT for motorcycles/quads and closed Saturday late evening at 10:33 p.m. PT for cars, trucks and UTVs, there were 124 official finishers in the 48th annual SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter has been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the magnificent Baja peninsula. The total number of finishers (124) was 51.88 percent giving testimony to the extreme ruggedness of this year’s race course. A total of 239 starters left Ensenada in two major groups. All vehicles had a 33-hour time limit from the time each left the start line in the elapsed-time race. E

MSR Presents the Big 6 Grand PrixDecember 5, 2015, Round 8Lake Elsinore MX, Lake Elsinore CA , Calif., Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

The last round of the eight round AMA MSR Presents The 2015 District 37 Big 6 Grand

Prix Series, was held on a sunny day at the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park, in Lake Elsinore, California. The Vikings Grand Prix, hosted by the Vikings Motorcycle Club, is the break neck round in which series titles have been won and lost. News for 2016 Big 6 Racing, the first six rounds of the eight round Big 6 GP are now posted, starting with the Adelanto GP in

Adelanto, California, on January 15-17. For this report we will cover a few of the series winners and their stories, and some of the action on this Saturday, day one of the two day round that concluded on Sunday. The Women are on the track in race two on inter-class competition. Three time World Off Road Champion Series winner, and the 2014 AMA Big 6 Racing Woman’s Expert champion, Tatum Sik, rolled out her steed for some exercise. The unflinching champion, went into her own GP realm systematically manufacturing a 24 second lead over second place Lauren Woods, completing three laps with over a minute gap and the

class and race win. The big picture is on the Woman’s Expert class, and the clinching of the 2015 Big 6 Woman’s Expert crown by Amanda Boyer. Boyer finished fifteenth overall in race two and sixth in the Woman’s Expert, but she had the number one plate sealed up before this final loop, so it was all about fun. Boyer recalls round four at the Hilltoppers GP as one of her best races, leading her class wire to wire. At the Viewfinders GP in Ridgecrest, she found herself just a few seconds behind eventual winner Kelly Barbosa and felt she was having a good race, until she went down on the anthill leading

into the technical section after contact was made with another racer. The twenty-five year old has had her share of injuries, including a broken right leg causing her to race by a personal pledge, “to not get hurt.” Boyer would like to thank Mom Diana and Dad Bill for all their love, support and dedication. In the Mini Intermediate, Jake Alvarez, rolled past scoring first in class, mooring in the position for the remaining two laps and the class win. Mason Stiffler raced through the finish in second. Carson Baehr made a dash for Stiffler, erasing Stiffler’s lap two gap

of eleven seconds. Baehr

charged to just two seconds behind Stiffler on the last lap, placing third in the Intermediate. Baehr was the top man at the end of the game, placing second five times and winning two rounds he had his low points dropped from this race. Baehr exited Lake Elsinore as the 2015 Big 6 GP Mini Intermediate Champion, Mason Klein finished second in the series points, and Stiffler third in points. Baehr also finished third in the Super Mini Advanced ending points. KTM USA’s Paul Krause, could have a set of personal encyclopedias to document his accomplishments in the Off-Road racing universe. Krause has been on several Baja 1000 winning teams and has participated in the International Six Days. Racing with competitors likely half his age or less in the Lightweight II Expert, Krause won two events and placed second in the final count, forty points behind class champion Jesse Vanhoy. The 40+ Senior Heavyweight, Krause splashed dirt for a win at the Hilltoppers GP and was third in the final points. Needing 71 points to cinch the title in the 50+ Magnum Heavyweight Expert class, which equals to a twelfth or better, at the green light Krause went to work. He promptly tooled a sixteen second lead over classmate and second place Jerry Black, Andy Kirker third, Frank Charolla fourth and Ron Hofer fifth. Krause ran up a fifty-one second gap over Kirker, who has moved into second at the end of lap four, Black third, Hofer and Greg Bender now in fifth. After lap four Krause went into another zip code finishing out six laps and the race win by over ninety seconds. Kirker second, Black third, Hofer, and Bender fifth. The hard racing Krause seals up the Magnum Heavyweight Expert title, Black finished second and Hofer was third in the final standings. The sport of Off-Road racing remains a lure for racers who were turning throttles on Taco mini bikes, the desire, urge, and ability to ride is still intact. Racing for over thirty years in the California moto circuit of the early 1980’s, Mark Davenport, told me that while he is racing he forgets about everything and just centers on racing. Davenport is quite dominant on his Yamaha YZ250F winning all eight rounds in his 2014 Magnum Lightweight Expert Championship tour. He had a DNF (did not finish) in Ridgecrest which would be a throw away round, but won the rest of the seven rounds for another Big 6 GP Magnum Lightweight Expert title. He would like to thank the U.S. Border Patrol, Temecula Motorsports,

Maxxis, Bill’s Pipes, Maxxim and most of all his “Special Dee.” Just so readers know, if you ever need a transfusion of MX positive blood, check with Davenport, he has plenty to go around. heAMA’s MSR Presents The 2015 District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series, is now in the history books and a

plethora of racing memories with it. In this article we will overview selected racers and their performances in the series, using two chosen images from previous rounds. We will also venture into the West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP) Novice class from the Vikings Grand Prix (GP). For this final 2015 Big 6 GP, round eight at Lake Elsinore. Big 6 Racing’s 2016 schedule up to round six has been posted, please check the website www.big6racing.com for information. The premier event of the series is the WCGP that consists of two races. The Intermediate, Expert and Pro classes race together in the ninety minute WCGP. The Novice and Beginner classes race in the forty-five minute WCGP. The WCCGP Pro Title was a done deal at Gorman, with OX Motorsports racer and 2015 Baja 1000 winner Colton Udall boxing it in for the ride home. Udall finished first in the WCGP Pro at Lake Elsinore to put the icing on the #1. Fasthouse racer Trevor Stewart, has learned to conserve his energy for this GP style after watching Dalton Shirey blow by him at round one. When comparing to Shirey you now have reached the elite, Stewart finished

second at that round one as well as two more times in the series. He nervously lines up for the WCGP Pro II at Elsinore, leading by ten points over 3Brosktm.com’s Nick Stover for the WCGP Pro II title. Stewart felt before the race he had a distinct advantage on the motocross style of the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park GP layout, and with his extensive motocross background he would be able to use that to his advantage. His thought was true. Ripping to the race lead in the WCGP Pro race at the end of lap one, Stewart fell to second on lap two when WCGP Pro Harrison Drummond, surprised a few taking the race lead. After a calculated two laps, and about ten bike lengths back of Drummond, Stewart decided to take care of business assuming the lead on lap four. He blistered the field on his well worn 2012 Yamaha YZ 250, completing eleven laps and winning the race overall by twenty seconds over WCGP Pro Udall. That secured his third WCGP Pro II, first WCGP race overall win, and the 2015 WCGP Pro II title. Stover finished second in the points, Mitch Anderson was third. Stewart’s plans for 2016 are still in progress. He would like to thank Fasthouse, IMS, Eks Brand Goggles, Enzo Suspension, Bill’s Pipes, Split Designs and especially his entire family. David Glass raced solid throughout the series winning the 40+ Senior Heavyweight

Expert title and the race overall three times. Glass needed ninety-one points for the title over David Putnam. Putnam went down swinging though, leading at the count of each of the eight laps for a thirty-six second race win over Glass. Still, Glass got the job done for another Big 6 title in the 40+ Senior Heavyweight Expert, Putnam second, and that fast fifty guy in Paul Krause just twenty points shy of Putnam in third. Chase Brubaker, rode his Kawasaki to the hilt in the 250 Novice classes. Going for it in the Lightweight-I Novice, Brubaker opened round one with a second, after round three he went on a three-race win-streak at rounds four through six. Finishing the last two rounds with a pair of second places, Brubaker put the lock on the 2015 Big 6 Lightweight-I Novice title, Blake Turner and Sam Capt were second and third in points respectively. Brubaker started off with a fifth in his

first race in WCGP 201-250cc Novice at Taft. In the next four rounds he finished third twice and had two wins putting him in the midst of the title chase. The competition was stiffer near the end of the series, but Brubaker worked out a fourth in round seven and a fifth at the final round for his second title of the series. He can call himself the 2015 Big 6 WCGP 250cc Novice Champion too. Steve Adams, kept his competitive work limited to the WCGP Heavyweight Novice in his first season of Big 6 racing. The KTM quartermaster started the series slow never breaking the top five, but after not racing in round four he came prepared to fire. Starting at Primm he broke the top five with a fourth, after the summer break he broke down the barriers at Ridgecrest for a second in class and the best was yet to come. Assuming the race lead on lap three, Adams

kept the bike rolling for his first class and race win of the series at round seven in Gorman. Getting mugged by the WCGP 250 Novice bikes that seemed to favor this Lake Elsinore track, Adams kept his steam on and finished seventh overall but won the 2015 Big 6 GP WCGP Heavyweight title. Congratulations wild one! For complete information on the 2016 series and results please go to hwww.big6racing.com. For series points please go to www.moto-tally.com/D37/GP/Standings.aspx. SCFTA Flat Track RacingNovember 14, 2015, Round 11Perris Raceway, Perris CA, Round 11

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

The final two rounds of Southern California Flat Track Association’s twelve round championship series was brought to an

end on the second weekend in November. Saturday night’s round eleven featured the “$10,000 2015 Pro Extravaganza”, a featured Pro Main Event customarily held the night before the now bygone Pomona National at the Los Angeles County Fairplex. Top AMA Grand National Championship racers in 2015 AMA GNC Champion Jared Mees, Sammy Halbert, Brad Baker, Jeff Carver, and jet fast English teen Oliver Brindley to name a few gated for the Pro heats and Main. Importantly, we have us a Pro points battle for the SCFTA Pro Championship Title. Foster Brother’s Racing’s Colt Foster, has two wins to his credit and runs three points behind series leader Enerlon’s John Vanderlaan. Vanderlaan comes in on a five race win streak and bundles of confidence. We have several battles in these two final chapters of the SCFTA 2015 season, with over one-hundred and sixty entries sorted over forty classes, let’s race. After a bevy of heat races we move on to the “Pro Dash for Cash”, the four top Pro racers from the heats lined up for the dough. We have Baker, Halbert, Dylan Morin with an impressive

race despite being absent at Perris most of the season. The 2015 FIM Flat Track Silver medalist Brindley was on the line and looked great all evening. Halbert took the win with Baker second, Morin third and Brindley fourth. The green light is lit on the twenty lap Pro Main as G & G Racing’s Baker, chipped to the lead by lap two with a frenzied pack charging in his wake, Halbert knifes the outside corner in second, Mees in third on lap three. We have a red flag after Halbert appears to have tangled with a competitor and got the raw end of the deal going down. Green is on and we are into lap seven with Baker, Mees and Bonsey in the top three. On fire and in style, Baker had been practicing at Perris a few days before the race and it was paying off. Past the half way mark and we have Baker and Mees just off his pace in second, Carver in third, Bonsey in fourth and it looks like everyone has their place at the table as we reach into the few remaining laps. Rudy Gil hoists the checkers at lap twenty for Baker laying down the strong laps in blueprint for the win, Mees second, Carver third, Bonsey, Brindley and Halbert with a frustrating sixth. Our SCFTA points leader John Vanderlaan finished seventh for fourteen points and a seventeen point lead into round twelve, after second in points Foster failed to qualify for the Main.

The Pettons are an SCFTA family led by former National AMA scraper and Grandpa, Travis Petton II. Ripping along behind him, no, ripping along aside him, is grandson Travis Petton IV and grandson Colin. Colin started the series winning spree in the family, finishing the series with Championships in the 50cc 2-Stroke Amateur and the 65-70cc 2-Stroke Beginner. With numerous titles in previous years, the pre-teen Petton IV, continued his winning tradition clenching the 2015 Series Titles at this round in the Youth 85cc Open and 85cc 2-Stroke Amateur. Racing every round Petton IV won fifteen Mains between the two classes, in the races he did not win he placed second and finishing second in the 250 Youth points as well. The Senior, Petton II won three of the eleven rounds he raced in the intense Bomber Expert class. Winning the title by six points over the scrapping Danny Perkins, who finished second in points. That is five 2015 SCFTA titles for the Pettons, exemplifying the team spirit as the entire clan works tirelessly throughout the races supporting the racing effort. Kawasaki of Simi Valley’s James Ott, jumped on the large bikes this year full time and adapted immediately giving fits to SCFTA Champions like Alex Crosby. After being moved up from the Open Amateur, he ended the class second in the final points, and finishing with a third in the Open Unclassified points. But he brought the ice to his competitors in the Youth 250 Open winning eight of ten rounds as we raced into this round eleven. James Ott did not quite have the race he wanted experiencing problems and ending with a sixth, but his story ended well. Wrapping up the title the next day at round twelve with a second behind winner, Clayton Williams securing another SCFTA Title. His brother, Matthew Ott, is doing well since saddling up to the big bikes and concluded his 2015 series run with a second in the Open Novice points. Matthew sat on the podium in four of the twelve rounds and is looking comfy and fast. So many racers to cover, please look for our web coverage at www.ss-offroadmagazine.com Please go to www.scftaracing.com for information on the 2016 season, results and the January 30th awards ceremony.

CALVMX/100%VINTAGE MOTOCROSSRound 4, November 15, 2015212 Land MX Park.By Steve CaroPhotos by Kathryn Caro

Vintage Motocross racing literally blew into 212 Land MX Park with their second appearance

in 2015. The continuous 25+ mph winds flipped more than one canopy upside down and riders and spectators alike scrambled to secure lightweight items from being blown into the surrounding terrain. With an outstanding course prepared by Austin Prida and crew, not even the blasting winds (which kept the nearby wind turbine farm going all day) was going to discourage the classic racers. Machines ranging from 100cc on up to the ground-pounding 500cc two-strokes filled the pit area. Included in the mix was Brian Tracy’s newly acquired 1997 Honda CR-500. Now

residing in Chicago, IL. Tracy racks up the frequent

flyer miles as

he routinely returns to California to compete in both CALVMX and cross-country races whenever his work schedule permits. Tracy quickly proved he had mastered the fabled power of the big Honda as he conquered the smooth flowing 212 Land course. Several classes featured close competition, including the 50+ Vintage Intermediate division. CZ mounted Tim McIntyre dueled with David Perrapato’s Husqvarna in both motos with mere bike lengths between them throughout the motos. McIntyre kept his Czech machine on the pipe and emerged with two moto wins to top Perrapato’s 2-2 moto results. Noleen Racing’s founder Clark Jones eschewed close racing as he totally dominated the 50+ Vintage Expert class on his CZ. In the first moto, Jones powered his way into a commanding lead at the drop of the green flag. Behind him, Mark Wood (CZ) and Brent Wilkinson (Suz) vied for the runner-up spot. Never challenged, Jones took the win, with Wood second, followed by Wilkinson. Jones quickly turned moto two into a repeat of the first moto. Powering his way up

the start straight, he established a tremendous lead over the mixed field of 50+ and 60+ Vintage racers. Wood and Wilkinson once again dueled for several laps for second, with Wood putting some distance between himself and Wilkinson near the end of the moto. Jones took the overall win, with Wood and Wilkinson rounding out the podium. Having been sidelined with medical issues until recently, Bultaco mounted Randi

Perkins topped the 60+ Vintage Intermediate class with an impressive two-moto sweep

of the class as he continued his successful return

to vintage racing. Also returning from his own medically mandated hiatus,

Craig Walker (CZ) overcame the numbing winds to take second

overall with 3-2 moto scores.

Harking back

almost 30 years to the days

of the AMA

500 class, the weapon of choice for the Open Age GP motos was the legendary Honda CR-500, with five of the roost monsters entered. Joining them were big bore examples from Maico, Kawasaki and Yamaha. Although scored separately by individual class, it was a case of racers being racers in the Open Age GP Division, as the combined Pro, Expert, Intermediate and Novice classes featured two moto’s of fast paced competition with plenty of duels for track position. The first moto in Open Age GP saw former pro Scott Burnworth (Hon) rocket up the starting straight and quickly build up a huge lead. Behind “Burner” expert ranked Brian Tracy and James Lavender battled throughout the moto on their own CR-500’s. The deep-throated bark of the big two-strokes echoed off the hills as the leaders demonstrated the potency of the 50+ horsepower machines. At the finish of moto one, Burnworth took the pro class win, while Tracy held off Lavender for the Expert class win, while Maico mounted Don Hansing topped the Intermediates, with Vince Laker (Hon) first novice. When the old-school green flag waved for the start of the second moto, Burnworth

once again powered his way into a huge lead over the combined field. Behind him, Lavender held off the hard charging Tracy as the two negotiated the winding 212 Land course. Midway thru lap two, Tracy made an inside pass on a downhill section to take the lead. Lavender kept the pressure on Tracy throughout the race but was never able to seriously challenge before the moto ended. At the checkers, it was Tracy taking the overall win, followed by Lavender with Burnworth taking the overall win in the pro division, while Hansing and Laker secured the overalls in the Intermediate and Novice classes. The three-wheeler classes attracted riders from as far as Arizona. The all Honda motos featured both two and four-stroke machines. Series regular Tanner Pies topped the 250 Expert

class, with Jerry Nocciolo Jr. topping the Intermediates. Newcomer Angela Boland put together 2-1 moto scores to top the 250 Novice class, with Jerry Nocciolo III in second. The Stock Open Expert class featured David Ham, Ed Hicks and Jeremy Knisely in the top three spots. Joining the three-wheeled ATV’s was the Norton/Wasp sidehack of Mark and Kathy Wood. The open megaphoned British twin powered rig thundered around the course in impressive

style and actually led several of

the three-wheeled ATV’s during both motos. Other class winners included Tim McIntyre adding to his win total with the overall in Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate with Patrick Irvin (Bul) and David Perrapato (Husq) joining him on the podium. Chase Fryslie (Yam) put together a 1-1 tally to take the Vintage Sportsman 250 Novice class followed by Marty Eisen (Yam). Dion Davis (Husq) joined the list of winners with the overall in GP-1

250 Intermediate, Ron Renzulli topped GP-2 125 Expert and

Kitty Hoole (Yam) took gold in Women’s Expert, while

Kathy Wood (CZ) was on top in the Women’s Intermediate class. EDavid Perrapato

SCFTA Flat Track RacingNovember 15, 2015, Round 12Perris Raceway, Perris CA

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

S outhern California Flat Track Association’s twelve round Championship series finished up the

final round on an overcast Perris Sunday. SCFTA will have the 2015 Awards Ceremony on January 30, 2016, beginning at 11:30 a.m., please go to the website www.scftaracing.com for more information. After a busy night of racing on Saturday evening, we still have several series titles to wrap up, so let’s race. The Powder Puff (Woman’s) points title

came down to the last race of the season with Rosa Plates Jaycee Jones, having a four point lead over Alyssa Flores. Jones opened up the season with three straight wins, Flores responded by winning three rounds with her worst finish a third. At this last round Flores made a switch to a bigger bike from her Yamaha YZ85, hoping that would give her an extra edge, but it did not matter to Jones. Coming off a win on Saturday night, Jones opened up a lead and gave no one a chance to compete, putting her head down she sped out the laps for first place and the 2015 SCFTA Powder Puff title. Flores raced

in at second and seven points behind Jones in the final series count. Jeanette Griggs was third, Monica Gil showing some speed was fourth in the race and finished third in the points behind Flores. A joyous Jones thanks Foster Brothers Racing, Williams Family, G&G Racing and everyone who has supported her. When Cycle Gear racer Brad Rudy, moved to the Senior +50 Amateur, he knew after leaving the

Vet +35 ranks

nothing was going to get easier. The reason was he had Steele in his way, as in routine front runner, Steele Friedrich. Both serious competitors, the class had at least one controversy in the early rounds painting the intensity of the battle between the two with every point counting. Rudy has six wins, Friedrich has one win class win but only missed the top three twice in every round as we get ready for their final battle. Rudy has a seven point cushion over Friedrich and the race is

on, Rudy pounds the throttle and moves into the clean air and the lead, Friedrich meanwhile is hampered by slower racers in the inter-class field as Rudy gets away for the race win, Arnie Fry is second, and Friedrich third in class. Rudy takes the 2015 SCFTA +50 Amateur title, Friedrich second, and Fry third in the season ending points. Racing with SCFTA for several years now, this was a hard earned victory for the competitive Rudy exclaiming at the end of the day, “Best racing season of my life” going on to say “Steele made the season fun.” The Hanson family has been loyal supporters of SCFTA racing for several years making a dent in the series points titles across a few classes. Scott Hanson, brother of Rich Hanson and Uncle of his son Justin Hanson is first to bat. Power on for the Open Amateur class with Scott Hanson just needing to finish for the title. He did better. He won the class and the 2015 SCFTA Open Amateur title. LJ Gronek finished third on the day and was second in the final points count. Scott wants to tell his entire family “Thank you for everything!” Rich Hanson, with his outdoors look, did not expect to race the entire season but he has the racing flu and rode the series out. Starting in the Vet +35 Amateur, Rich had some knuckle banging battles with his younger brother Scott. Rich fell second to Scott in the last two rounds, irrelevant because he won the war. With seven race wins Rich takes the title by forty-five points over brother and second place in points, Scott Hanson. Rich would like to thank Jim Wood, FMF, Spy Optics and Lucas Oil. Justin Hanson, is the one with the invincible youth mentality and is willing to put in the work to get to the top. Progressing on an even plane the past few seasons, Justin Hanson showed his increasing skills facilitating with quick decisions, identifying passing lines then acting. He said he is a lot smoother this year which this reporter has noticed, he needed it in battling with his fellow racers and there were no easy wins in the series. Justin was in the middle of the SCFTA hotshots racing in the 250 Youth Open, stacking against speedsters James Ott and Travis Petton IV, finishing third in points and sitting on the podium three times. In the Open Novice Justin came along strong at round six with a second,

never stepping off the box in the remaining rounds and ending the series with three race wins. The third of his race wins came with clinching the 2015 SCFTA Open Novice title. Justin would like to thank Nazarene Electric, Cambridge Dental, Fusion Graphics, his dad Rich and the whole family. He will be racing in the Open Amateur and Youth 250 Open for the 2016 SCFTA season. The Pro Main once again had lightning speed in Jeff Carver, Sammy Halbert, and England’s hot lapper Oliver Brindley. The battle within the race is between SCFTA Pro racers John Vanderlaan and Foster Brother’s Colt Foster for the Pro title. Foster did not make the Main in round eleven causing him to lose any headway in his battle for the title. On the flip-side Vanderlaan needed nine points to lock in the title, which he would get with ten bonus points for finishing both rounds. Halbert took the win with Carver second, Brindley rode in for third. Vanderlaan, racing in the top four most of the race was suddenly charged by racers behind him on the last lap. He ramped it up hard coming out of turn four going to the checkers. Seeming to make contact with the wall at the finish line he took a terrifying spill and was reported to be hit by another racer, he crashed across the checkers literally. He was hospitalized but has since recovered so he can celebrate his 2015 SCFTA Pro Title. Five Pro wins in the series and the number one plate is for you Mr. Vanderlaan. Talking about doing it the hard way. A somber Foster, who never relented will be back for 2016 and a new life at the SCFTA Pro title after his second in points for 2015. A hard riding Nick Gil came in at third in the Pro point standings. Please go to our extensive web coverage at www.ss-offroadmagazine.com. Please go to www.scftaracing.com for information on the 2016 season, results and the January 30th awards ceremony.

Spotlight on Travis Petton IVArticle & Photos by Jamey Blunt

The racing force is strong in young Travis, his great grandfather was a racer, his grandfather is a racer and young Travis

Petton the 4th is a racer! Standing just four feet ten inches tall and weighing in at a mere seventy-six pounds, young Travis has the honor of holding the track record for the youth classes on Perris raceway’s 1/4 mile oval at 15.02 seconds! All while barely able to reach the ground aboard his 250cc mount. Travis a straight “A” student at Mt. Woodson Elementary school in the fifth grade and is also an all-star baseball player who competes in soccer as well. We caught up with Travis at the last round of the S.C.F.T.A. at Perris Raceway to ask him a few short questions to better understandwhat makes this young man so special.

Q. Travis when’s your birthday?A. My birthday is October 1st, born in 2004Q. What was your very first motorcycle?A. My first motorcycle was a Honda CRF-50, which I got when I was three years old.Q. Where did you first start riding?A. I started riding at my dad’s property in Ramona where I live, then rode some motocross tracks at Barona and Pala.Q. So, Travis where was your first race and how did you finish?A. My first race was at Perris on my KTM 50, and I won my very first race!Q. We know you are active in many sports, which ones and which do you like the most?A. I play traveling soccer, baseball, and compete in running cross country races. But racing motorcycles is my favorite sport.Q. Have you won any championships or titles?A. I was the 2011 50cc Champion for SCFTA and the 2012 85cc Beginner and 65cc Novice Champion for SCFTA. In 2013 I won the 85cc Novice and 65cc Overall Championship. For 2014 I won both the 85cc Novice and 85cc Open Championships

Q. Of all the different tracks you’ve raced on what’s your favorite at this point and why?A. My favorite track so far is Perris Auto Speedway because it’s super FAST!Q. Of all the motorcycles you’ve had even at your young age which is your favorite?A. My favorite bike so far is my Honda CRF-250cc.Q. Travis, when did you start wearing a hot shoe, and what was that like?A. I’ve been wearing a hot shoe since I was five years old, I can’t even remember what it was like to not wear one, it’s a part of me.Q. Have you established any goals or plans you’d like to see happen in your future?A. Kinda, I really want to make it to the pro ranks and at this point possibly with an eye toward road racing. But Dirt Track is where my roots are.Q. Who do you look up to, or who has a big influence upon you?A. Most of all my dad, he’s always there for me! Also my grandparents, my grandfather Travis Petton the 2nd is a racer so he understands and does a lot for me and my little brother Colin. Without all their help I couldn’t be racing, I can’t thank them enough. With that Travis needed to head out for practice for just one of the several classes he competes in. It was a true pleasure to spend some time with this genuine young talent! E
