Missing dads. Multiple half and step siblings. Prison waiting rooms. Homeless shelters. Shabby motel rooms rented by

the week. Sleeping in a garage. Sleeping in a car. Missing parents. Drugs. Alcohol. Financial problems. Suicide. Abuse. These are the facts of life for too many. And when it’s kids who are forced to deal with these challenges through no fault of their own it’s especially tragic. Adults who find themselves in these situations are often there because of their own poor choices and lack of self control. But the kids. They did nothing. They were just born into a lifestyle of dysfunction. It’s hard to say exactly when the idea came to us. But sometime in the 1990’s would be a safe guess. We were raising our kids in an off road environment with regular desert trips and a love of motorcycles and they knew their friends and neighborhood kids were always welcome on our desert outings. It was the late 1990’s when we named our dream: Thundering Trails. It would be an off road adventure for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. Still living in the city at the time we didn’t quite know when we would do it or where we would do it. But we knew. One day Thundering Trails would become a reality. In August of 2004 we had the awesome privilege of acquiring the desert land that would become the home of Thundering Trails and on October 24, 2005, our 31st wedding anniversary, Thundering Trails was officially declared a non-profit corporation by the State of California. Thirteen months later we held our first camp. Meeting with an inner city ministry the administrator told us he had hundreds of kids who would love to attend. We told him we could accept about 8 boys for the first camp. Four showed up and we were devastated at the small turnout. But 36 hours later when they went home we were exhausted and felt like they had been here 36 days. We never could have handled 8-10 kids in the beginning. It was a huge learning curve and we were to discover that an off road desert adventure with four kids who have never been out of the city and are not your own kids familiar with riding and camping

-- and family rules -- was a whole new ballgame. Theft and vandalism and disrespect in the early days helped us to fine-tune our requirements for kids to attend camp. The goal is not to rehabilitate troublemakers, it’s to provide an awesome desert adventure for good kids who’ve had more than their share of troubling times in their short lives.

Along with a group of dedicated volunteers who serve with us we have hosted 54 weekend adventures for groups of 8-12 kids since the fall of 2006. We rent a van and provide transportation from the city and the fun starts the minute the kids arrive. Playing tag and hide-n-go-seek are

camp favorites shortly after they get off the van until dinner is served. Later it’s a hayride and campfire. Saturday is packed full of fun from the moment they wake up with morning hikes to “Big Eyes” the giant binoculars sitting atop a hill, to firing off rockets, a delicious

breakfast and then walking the track and suiting up for riding. While one group rides another group chooses between hiking, crafts, games, horseshoes or just hanging out watching the other kids ride. The day also includes a giant treasure hunt and depending on the weather

water gun fights and sno-cones. Brownies, cookies and milk are plentiful and we’ve gone through thousands of popsicles over the years, the kids are welcome to as many as they want.

Saturday night brings a delicious dinner followed by chapel service and s’mores around the campfire. More tag and hide-n-go-seek and they’re ready to pass out. Sunday morning’s incentive to get the bunkhouse cleaned up, bags packed and loaded in the van and sponsor thank-you letters written is one more mini bike ride before the van leaves for the city at 11 a.m. They take home a 19”x13” camp poster packed with photos and a goodie bag filled with off road stickers and other treats.

And what do we get for the thousands upon thousands of hours the guy-in-the-garage and I have invested in this adventure over the years? Seeing the smiles, hearing the laughter, listening to the excited voices of all the kids talking at once as they exuberantly relate their adventures on the mini bike track. Time and time again. Camp after camp. It’s a wonderful exhaustion and there is no better return on an investment than knowing we’ve sent hundreds of kids home filled to the brim with marvelous memories they’ll carry in their hearts for a lifetime.

Clinton: ‘We’re Going To Put A Lot Of Coal Miners Out Of Business’By Chris White Posted March 14, 2016

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told those gathered at a Sunday town hall

meeting in Ohio her policies would close coal companies and force coal miners out of work. “We’re going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business,” Clinton said at the event, video of which was posted on YouTube by America Rising, a conservative political action committee. The former Secretary of State went on to say that “we don’t want to forget those people” in the coal industry who will lose their jobs as a result of Clinton’s policies. “And now we’ve got to move away from coal,” Clinton added. A group representing Ohio’s coal industry issued a scathing statement in response to Clinton’s comments. “Hillary Clinton’s callous statements about coal miners, struggling under the weight of a hostile administration, are reprehensible and will not be forgotten,” Christian Palich, President of the Ohio Coal Association, said in a press statement Monday. “The way Secretary Clinton spoke so nonchalantly about destroying the way of life for America’s coal families was chilling.” Clinton urged the audience to fear not, as her policies would also allow the renewable energy sector to take up the slack, transitioning Ohioans from coal jobs to green jobs. GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump took a different tact at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, Saturday afternoon, telling the crowd regulators are unfairly targeting the state’s coal industry. The EPA’s regulations on coal in Ohio is a “complete disaster, we are going to change things around,” Trump said at the rally, ahead of the state’s March 15 primary. “We have to protect your coal industry which is being decimated” by EPA regulations, Trump added. “And we

have to protect your steel industry.” Ohio’s coal industry has come under siege by developments in natural gas and EPA regulations. A study in April 2015 shows the coal industry has bled nearly 50,000 jobs in 5 years — 2008 to 2012 — due to regulations and cheap natural gas. President Barack Obama, for his part, told NPR in an interview in December that opposition to his coal policies by people in the Appalachia, which encompasses the state of Ohio, is “perfectly legitimate.” This is not the first time Obama has copped to targeting the coal industry. During the 2008 presidential election, for example, then-candidate Barack Obama told the San Francisco Chronicle his policies would one day bankrupt the coal industry. “So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted,” Obama told the Chronicle.

Trump Wins Big In Ohio’s Coal CountryBy Michael BastaschPosted March 16, 2016

Donald Trump may not have won any Republican delegates in Tuesday night’s Ohio primary

election, but the business mogul outdid his primary opponents in one of the most hard-hit regions of the state: coal country. Trump beat out Republican rival Gov. John Kasich in most of Ohio’s 18 coal-producing counties. Trump also won

support from Ohio’s top coal producing counties, responsible for 81 percent of Ohio’s 2010 production levels based on data from the state’s coal association. In at least two of these counties — Jefferson and Harrison — Trump snagged more than 50 percent of the vote, according to election data compiled by the New York Times. Trump’s victory in coal country, however, was not enough to propel him to victory in Ohio over Kasich. Kasich, Ohio’s sitting governor, walked away with nearly 47 percent of the vote statewide Tuesday night and all 66 of the state’s Republican delegates. But while Kasich won Ohio by carrying the more densely-populated central and eastern part of the state, Trump’s coal country victory shows just how fed up voters in that region are with

elected officials at the state and federal level. Kasich has been governor since 2011, coming into office as Ohio was struggling through the last recession, and his tenure has been a popular one among Ohioans who gave him a 62 percent approval rating, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll. Yet Kasich’s tenure has also coincided with a massive regulatory push by the Obama administration to wean the U.S. off coal power as part of his plan to fight global warming — that means shuttered mines and laid off workers. Across the U.S., thousands of workers at coal mines and coal-fired power plant workers have lost their jobs due to falling demand for coal and tough Environmental Protection Agency regulations making it too costly to burn coal for electricity. Ohio is no exception, the state has seen thousands of mine and power plant workers laid off in recent years, in part, because of tough EPA rules. The EPA’s latest regulation, the so-called Clean Power Plan, could do even more damage to coal country since it effectively bans new coal-fired power plants from being built. The Obama administration has even offered taxpayer

grants for economic development in coal communities with high unemployment. Kasich is a supporter of the coal industry, always reminding voters in speeches that his grandfather was a coal miner who died of the black lung, but the governor has not gone as far as Trump has in bashing regulations killing coal states. On numerous occasions, Trump has pushed for abolishing the

EPA. “They are a complete disaster, we are going to change things around,” Trump told supporters at a campaign rally in Dayton, Ohio just before the primary election. “We have to protect your coal industry which is being decimated,” Trump said. “And we have to protect your steel industry.”Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2016/03/16/trump-wins-big-in-ohios-coal-country/#ixzz436ve4lIM

Largest US Coal Producer Considers Filing Chapter 11 BankruptcyBy Chris White Posted March 16, 2016

The U.S.’s largest coal producer said it might file for Chapter 11

bankruptcy after missing an interest payment due Tuesday. Peabody Energy Corp. has joined the likes of Arch Coal and Illinois-based Alliance Coal in contemplating drastic measures to pull itself up and out of the muck and mire of a stumbling coal industry. All three Goliaths are struggling in a coal market getting pummeled by low natural gas prices on one side, and overreaching regulations on the other.

Peabody, which was marked as a bankruptcy risk by regulators Wednesday, acknowledged it bounced on a $71.1 million interest

payment to its lenders, putting in place a month-long grace period. Much like Arch Coal — which filed for Chapter 11 Jan.11, citing a dwindling demand for coal — Peabody’s lenders are asking the once-massive coal producer to restructure its debt through bankruptcy. Arch filed in hopes of keeping $4.5 billion in debt off its financial accounts. Peabody managed to pump out more than 117 million tons of coal in 2014, when coal was in a slightly better market, from one of its lodestar mines, North Antelope Rochelle in Wyoming. The Missouri-based coal producer went public with its plight a day after Foresight Energy LP, one of Peabody’s competitors, said it may also file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy if it cannot come to agreement with its lenders. Things are rough all over for Foresight Energy, as the energy company reported a net loss of $64.3 million during the fourth quarter of trading. By comparison, Foresight managed to churn out a profit of $31.1 million a year earlier. Alliance Coal, for its part, has managed to keep above the fray, so far, relying on a number of shrewd moves to keep its balance sheet in the black. The company announced in February it would need to lay off 275 employees from several of its coalmines around the country. The bulk of the layoffs — 200 — would come from Hamilton County Coal, LLC, while the remaining 75 would be balanced out between Illinois subsidiaries River View Coal, LLC and White Coal, LLC.

Like its competitors, Alliance cited the same culprits for its slow and steady fall into bankruptcy: low natural gas prices, “overreaching regulations” and a glut in coal market as the reason for the layoffs. E

THE BEST FIRST AID KITS AND A WHOLE LOT MORE

Years ago in the 1980’s I used to do a lecture for patients who came to our office for treatment. They

were encouraged to bring family and friends along. I would speak for about 30 minutes and then another doctor would do another 30 minutes. We would try to educate folks about their choices in health care and about the benefits of drug free chiropractic care. Many, about 90% of the population in the USA, have never been to a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in their entire life. Imagine the same if it was 90% of the population never seeing a dentist? You would think you were in Arkansas! Where the toothbrush was invented! Otherwise, it would have been called the “teeth-brush” right? Ha! One of the most common questions I would get would be “Doc, what is the most important thing I can do for my own health?” And most would expect me to reply “chiropractic care” but that was just not true. I’ve written on this very subject before but it has been a few years back. Here is my opinion after 33 years plus in the health care profession.

#1. Exercise! No need to be Jack LaLanne or have to exercise like a professional athlete. Just find something you like to

do that works up a mild sweat for about 30 minutes a day, 4 to 5 days a week. You cannot tell a hiker/walker/runner to

go lift weights or swim. You cannot tell a swimmer to go run or bike. Do something you enjoy or can at least tolerate and work up a mild sweat. Yes, more exercise can be helpful and very beneficial but if you are working out doing something as posted here on a regular basis it will help in a huge way with your overall health. Exercise, even just a regular walking program or stationary bicycle will help reduce STRESS and that helps a person’s overall health in a huge way. Toughest part is getting started and being consistent, making it a HEALTHY habit. If you are doing this and sticking with it, it will pay big benefits overall, health wise and the rest is mainly genetics! We are not all the same and we have to do the best we can with what we are born with, God’s Gifts.

#2. Diet Diet is a broad word. Here, in this case, the main emphasis is overall calorie INTAKE. If you take in, eat, more calories than you burn off each day, you will gain weight. If you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. Un-burned calories go to storage and become fat. Fat is stored in different places on our bodies depending on sex and genetics. Some folks are genetically predisposed to store fat, others are not and don’t have as tough a time

keeping their weight at a healthy level. Nonetheless, it all comes down to calorie intake vs output, PERIOD. The largest study on diet, exercise and body weight/mass revealed that it was diet, NOT exercise, that made the biggest impact of healthy body weight for your size. Ninety percent of weight gain/loss is due to calorie intake vs daily output. Yes of course, exercise can help with weight loss/gain but it is mainly how much a person eats. Americans in general, just simply eat way to much food everyday. We are the only nation where the poorer folks are overweight. Eating large has become part of the American/West culture and overweight folks are prone to become Type II diabetics. This will soon surpass the likes of cancer as the #1 cause of health issues and death. It’s on track to do that right now. If you are overweight, start by cutting everything you THINK you need to eat every day and cut it in half! Drinks too! The US diet is loaded with hidden carbohydrates and GMO food, thanks to our lovely Federal Government being in bed with Monsanto and their GMO food. You may want to do some homework on these subjects. Most of us do not need but half of what we eat, everyday. Supersize? Really now folks? Take control, if you have the will power. If not, get help.

#3. Dental care Regular dental care is important to most people’s health, not only the mouth but bad teeth can effect the entire body, even kill you! Most folks in the West/USA understand the VALUE of regular dental care, one to two times per year. They go in to see a dentist they know, like and trust, not because their teeth hurt but to prevent small problems, decay, from becoming a bigger problem! They, the public, in general, get the “big picture” on regular dental care and emergency dental care when needed. Funny thing is, even if no one ever went to a dentist for regular check ups, cleanings, you still can replace your teeth if needed with a variety of treatments from implants to basic dentures and bridges, partials. You sure can and I bet a few of you reading this have indeed had some teeth replaced.

#4 Chiropractic care For ALL the same reasons as posted above and then some! Furthermore, most of you will spend way more money and time on making sure your own off-road vehicles have their tires, wheels, drive shafts, engines aligned and balanced than you will to do the same for your own spine! All the vehicle parts including tires and wheels are replaceable with enough money, same for the teeth, right? And what happens to tires, as just one example, that are driven without proper balance and alignment? Yep, they wear badly, wear out faster and the car may not go down the road/track as well as if they were balanced and aligned. We all only get ONE spine and nervous system. They are NOT replaceable and boy am I sick of folks waiting till the last minute to get their backs/spines adjusted, aligned, balanced. Chiropractic works by taking pressure off the nervous system and aligning the spine, making sure it is moving as properly as possible. Misaligned spines, hips, necks can put pressure on the nervous system which is the wiring harness from the brain to

every living cell in our bodies and back to the brain for feedback/sensor loops that allow the brain, both conscious and subconscious to make adjustments via electrical sensors and signals to regulate nearly every function in our bodies. The nervous system that flows from the brain and down the spine is indeed the master system of the human body and that of all life. Grays Anatomy, page 4 folks. Why most of the MD’s don’t seem to understand that and refer to DC’s only makes me think the AMA, Big Pharma and the US Government are all in bed together. Medical doctors, should be referring out to DC’s all the time for non-medical emergency conditions. Nope, it’s 99% drugs, more drugs, stronger drugs, surgery and side effects. Just great! About 90% of the public has never been to a chiropractor. They do not know any better and the MD’s, Big Pharma, do not want you to know!

#5. Positive Mental Attitude and a Hobby Although we all know some people who always seem to have a negative, bad attitude that live to 90 years old plus anyway, I think having a good, more positive attitude and a healthy hobby, something you enjoy and look forward to daily/weekly is generally better for our health. That hobby could be exercise, up their in the #1 spot on this topic and in fact, for many folks, exercise is their fun hobby, or at least one of them. But, bottom line, when a person has something they look forward to, that they enjoy, it seems good for the soul and mind. As exercise is the best thing for stress relief, that is a great hobby and helps one keep a positive outlook. Stress is a major cause of all sorts of health issues from depression to hypertension/high blood pressure. Do things to reduce stress, have some fun, smile, get out and enjoy and you should be in a better position for good health of the body and mind. Sit there and do nothing all day, all week, all month and complain about everything, let me know how that is going for you, ha! Personally I keep myself busy with a variety of hobbies from poker, cooking, motocross, some exercise, reading up on subjects I’m interested in and lots of fun with friends, even family, as long as they aren’t stressing me out, ha! Well folks, that is my Top 5.

You can’t have a successful venture on an empty stomach. A typical weekend camper

probably doesn’t give much thought to food storage and preparation. Load up a propane stove or a charcoal grill, throw some grub in a cooler and canned goods

in a box, and away you go. That process works well for most camping, especially in developed sites. It’s a whole new world off-road, however. Experienced four-wheelers know they must prepare well for the trip. A fully functioning kitchen is a must. Without one, the trip could be a bust, regardless of the scenery and the climate. The foundation of your kitchen is the camp box. Sometimes called a chuck box, the camp box contains many of the tools and non-perishable food items you’ll need. Compact and rugged, it fits neatly into your vehicle and withstands the rigors of off-road driving. When opened up, it offers just about everything you need to get started on your next meal. A camp box turns an ordinary vehicle in to a meals on wheels. My camp box is as essential to my off-road driving as the spare tire. I purchased mine, but you can build your own. A quick internet search brings up links to numerous web sites offering plans, including this one which offers a workbook for sale www.blueskykitchen.com/Grubby_One.html Many folks use Pelican™ cases for camp boxes. Check out their large selection at www.pelican.com. Regardless of whether you build or buy, make sure your box offers a sturdy flat work surface. On some models you can use the top. Others have a pull out shelf. Still others allow you to flip the box on its side and use the door as a work surface. Keep in mind that your camp box isn’t just for camping. If you’re

ever forced to evacuate from your home due to fire, flood or other disaster, your camp box will become a very important survival tool.

What’s in a camp box? A camp box is as unique as its user.

Still, certain essentials are found in nearly all. Those include pots and pans, plates and silverware, cups or glasses, large knives and spoons, matches or a lighter, and even a corkscrew. Add in some non-perishable food items such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cooking oil, flour, salt and pepper. Make sure they’re in small packages or containers. Use a separate box for larger quantities. My camp box has a wide assortment of stuff in it. This assortment has

worked well for me. Over time, you will find the right combination for your needs. No need to get fancy with the dishes. In fact, many people use hand-me-downs or goodies they found at garage sales. You’re going off-road, for crying out loud. Do you really want to pack your best stuff? How many pieces of each you need depends on the size of your family and amount of space. Many people pack for a group of four. Take a few moments to calculate your needs. You can always revise that later. Next is a box of dry goods, condiments and related staples. These include paper towels or napkins, tin foil, cereal, and bulk quantities of various items in your camp box. Toss in a can or two of soup, tuna fish, and beef broth (if you like making soup). You may also want to include a roll of toilet paper and some handy wipes. This box can be left in your garage. When needed, just toss it into your

vehicle. Incidentally, I recommend you mark your cans with a purchase date, and rotate them every 12 months or so if not used. Canned goods actually last for years, but it’s a good idea to keep your stock relatively current. Opened boxes of cereal, crackers, and other dry food should be replaced. Bugs and critters will be in hog heaven at your expense. A Pelican organizer for the lid is

helpful. The final container includes your perishable food items. These, naturally, stay in your refrigerator or freezer until just before departure. Pack your cooler with sufficient ice or freezer packs to last for several hours. Plan your trip so that you can get new ice on occasion. An unintended flare

up or cooking fire is always a possibility, so when preparing for a trip, remember to inspect your fire extinguisher. Is it still properly charged? Any cracked or broken parts? For more on caring for and using a fire extinguisher, see Store And Use Your Fire Extinguisher Properly (www.4x4training.com/Articles/Safety/UseFireExt.html) See more helpful Tips for Your

Camp Box (www.4x4training.com/Articles/Camping/CampboxTips.html) A properly designed camp box puts a small kitchen right at your fingertips wherever you are. The meal you prepare is so much more satisfying when you’re able to set up your camp kitchen quickly and effortlessly. If you don’t already have one, I suggest you add a camp box to your “honey-do” list.

CALVMX/100%VINTAGE MOTOCROSSRound 1 - February 6, 2016Lake Elsinore Motorsports ParkLake Elsinore CABy Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn Caro

A forecast of high winds and rain forced a one week delay for the opening round of the CALVMX/100% Products

2016 vintage racing season. Good luck prevailed and the new race day was met with clear skies, comfortable temperatures and just a trace of breeze at the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park. A very good turnout of both vintage and post-vintage era machines were on hand to challenge Elsinore’s freshly modified, vintage friendly, main course. Steve Furman set off his season in fine form sweeping both motos of the Marty Tripes 100cc Works Revenge Factory Support Intermediate class. Furman screamed his diminutive Yamaha around the winding Elsinore course ahead of eventual second and third overall finishers Charlie Hamill (Yam) and Norm Himaka (Yam). Fellow Yamaha racer Scott Pid-dington used his 3-4 scores to take fourth overall in the class. Clark Jones, the founder of Noleen Racing, is always the man to beat whenever he enters a vintage race. Jones evidenced chronological age is merely a number by totally dominating the 50+ Vintage Expert class on his CZ. Jones gated perfectly in moto one and roosted down the start straight into a command-ing lead that was unchallenged throughout the moto. Behind him, Steve Ellis (Can-Am) and Tim McIntyre (CZ) vied for second, followed by veteran campaigner Brent Wilkinson (Suz). At the checkers, it was Jones with the moto win, followed by Ellis and McIntyre. Jones made quick work of the second

moto with an exact repeat of his first moto start. Unfazed by a course that had been thorough-ly pounded by 14 previous motos, Jones demonstrated a bike with four inches of rear shock travel and drum brakes can still fill the racing urge. As he had done in the first moto, Ellis pushed his Can-Am hard to secure second overall, followed by McIntyre’s consistent 3-3 scores to round out the podium. Moving into the era of long travel machines, Suzuki mounted Kent Musgrave had a banner day in the 50+ G.P. Interme-diate class, taking the overall win with 2-1 moto scores. In the first moto, Musgrave sparred with Tim Hoole (Suz), Ron Rinden (Hon) and Kev-in Rogers (Hon) for the top spot. Musgrave and Hoole pushed each other hard, with Rinden’s booming CR-500 close behind. Near the end of the moto, Hoole broke free to take the top spot, followed by Musgrave

and Rinden. Moto two saw Musgrave exit the

starting straight holding a slight lead over the Maico of Don Hansing and

Rinden. Things changed near the end of lap three, as Hoole pow-ered his way thru the pack and

began to press the lead group. By the white flag

lap, Hoole had taken over the second spot and was closing in on Musgrave.

Musgrave kept the

power on and took

the moto

and overall win, followed by Hoole, and Rinden. Although the top levels of “modern” motocross have shunned the two-stroke 125cc bike, they still hold a prominent place in both vintage and post-vintage racing. In the GP2-125 Expert class, Mark Sandzimier (Suz) added to his win tally taking the overall victory in the class. Squaring off against the always-competitive David MacDonald (Yam), the two engaged in a five-lap blitz of the Elsinore course with both riders barely backing off the throttle throughout the moto. MacDonald prevailed in the first moto for the win, followed by Sandzimier and Travis McCaw (Hon). The classic sound of high revving two-strokes filled the area as moto two saw Sandzimier and MacDonald resumed their battle. With their lightweight machines skimming over the heavily rutted and choppy course (i.e.: traditional motocross), Sandzimier and MacDon-ald kept up a scorching pace which saw them several bike lengths ahead of third place Micah Davis (Hon) on the only four stroke powered machine. Sandzimier would not be topped in this moto as the seasoned racer powered his way to both the moto and overall win, followed by MacDonald and Davis who used 4-3 tallies for third overall. E

Justin Lambert and Mitch Guthrie Win The 2016 Polaris RZR UTV World ChampionshipArticle by UTVUnderground.comPhotos by Don-Rig’d Photography

The 2016 Polaris RZR UTV World Championship powered by Monster Energy took over Laughlin, NV the

weekend of February 18-20, 2016. Three championship races were held at the Laughlin Off-Road park and thousands attended to watch the biggest field of UTV’s throw down in all out battles to claim the overall wins. Final numbers amount to 76 motorcycles and quads, 212 UTVs (24 Youth) and 450+ total banded racers to amass the largest UTV race in the world. #1918 Justin Lambert won the Walker Evans Racing Desert Championship Race with a time of just over three hours (03:05:32.056) in his Naturally Aspirated Polaris RZR XP1000. Lambert spent the majority of the race battling against the #951 RZR XP Turbo of Mitch Guthrie. Lap by lap, the two changed leading positions nearly six times and continued to battle within fifteen seconds of each other in the final laps of the 160-mile race. Guthrie eventually succumbed to the battle with Lambert after breaking the front differ-ential and both rear axles, forcing him to limp to an 8th place finish overall. Lambert went on to cruise to an easy victory, finishing over ten minutes ahead of second place finisher and Turbo Class Winner, #960 Ryan Laidlaw. With a victory at the Best in the Desert season opener at the Parker 250, the win marks Lambert and Cognito Motorsports’ second consecutive win in 2016. Guthrie bounced back and won the Holz Racing Products Production Short Course Race in his #4503 Polaris RZR. The race was a nonstop

blitz of action, with over 100 production vehicles in the race. With so many vehicles entered, BITD was forced to use the entire 16 mile loop, instead of the smaller track originally laid out. Lap traffic was drastic and racers battled four solid laps. Guthrie put on a clinic and finished fifteen seconds ahead of second place finisher, #144 Mickey Thomas. #4537 RJ Anderson took the last spot on the podium. Magnum Off-Road signed on this year to title sponsor both Youth Championship races. For the past two years, UTVUnderground.com has worked very hard to foster the growth of the RZR 170 race classes and give the younger drivers a place to begin racing RZRs, as well as a good starting point to grow into the sport of off-road. In his first UTV race ever, #299 Julien Beaumer won the Magnum Off-Road Youth Production RZR 170 race, completing 11 laps in 00:30:34:721. Julian is a champion motocross racer and first in the world on a jet ski. Julian borrowed the RZR 170 from the Gonzales family, whose son Dallas Gonzales raced in the unlimited 250 Class. #188 Casey Sims won the Magnum Off-Road Youth Unlimited 250 class and finished just under the thirty-minute mark. Casey competed last year and his team worked hard all year, building him a new RZR 170 to race at this year’s event. Of the twenty-four youth racers, only four did not finish! Racers took home over $100,000 in cash and prizes and overall winner Mitch Guthrie, Justin Lambert, Casey Sims and Julien Beaumer all took home brand new Polaris RZR’s for their victories. The Warfighter Made Perseverance Award is given to the racer who perseveres through the trials and tribulations that is off-road racing. Warfighter Made provides combat wounded veterans and active duty service members options to their physical and mental therapy and long term wellness, through recreational therapy and by the adaptation and customizing of vehicles and adaptive equipment. To earn the Warfighter Made Perse-verance Award, you have to show the intestinal fortitude of America’s military and stay in the fight! After suffering a bad crash that sent her Polaris RZR in a frantic barrel roll, #172 Katie Vernola was able to build her car back to working condition and limp to the finish line to finish the 2016 Polaris RZR UTV World Championship powered by Monster Energy in 61st place. In doing so, Katie Vernola won the 2016 Warfighter Made Persever-

ance Award. “We knew we were putting on the worlds largest UTV race event, but to see 212 UTV teams come out to compete totally exceeded our expecta-tions. We can’t thank BITD, Polaris RZR and each and every team, racer, fan and sponsor for making this event happen!” thanked UTVUnderground CEO, Joey DiGiovanni.

On behalf of UTVUnderground, Mad Me-dia and Best in the Desert, to Polaris RZR, Monster Energy and all our supporting sponsors, our 80+ contingency vendors, 140+ poker run participants, our 76 motorcycle and quad racers, our 212 UTV racers, our 30+ guest media, our tremendous staff and all the fans and friends who made the 2016 Polaris RZR UTV World Championship powered by Monster Energy – THANK YOU! Corey Keysar, second overall and second Trophy Truck

Seizing the day as race favorites stumbled one by one on the rugged desert race course, Texan Billy Wilson earned his

first SCORE race win as he saddled up, rode hard and overcame all obstacles to capture the Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory at the 30th SCORE San Felipe 250. Round 1 of the four-race 2016 SCORE World Desert Championship was held on a super-challenging, technical 249.5-mile course during a sensationally sunny Satur-day in Mexico that started and finished in San Felipe on the

northeast portion of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. Starting 10th out of 11 starters in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck racing division for high-tech, 850-horsepower unlimited production trucks, Billy Wilson, 30, of Corpus, rode herd on the field in the No. 15 Bevly Wil-son Racing Chevy Silverado to a winning time of four hours, 36 minutes, 41 seconds while averaging a strong average speed of 54.10 miles per hour.

Celebrating its 30th year on the SCORE schedule, the SCORE season opener was held in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe. The town is located 125 miles south of the U.S. border on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. Entries came from 20 U.S. States and eight countries competing in Pro and Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and Quads, the race had 164

starters of which 117 offi-cially finished the 249.5-mile course. With a surprisingly high finishing rate of 71.3 percent, the very challeng-ing elapsed time race had a 17 hour time limit.

FAVORITES DOWN Billy Wilson’s biggest challengers among the field were pre-race favorites Gus Vildosola Jr, Mexicali, Mexico and Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin who both had mechanical issues that put them out of the race. Vildosola, who was attempting to make history by winning the SCORE San Felipe 250 for the fourth consecutive year, was racing among the leaders when he was stopped at race mile 137.7 in the middle of the infamous Matomi Wash. Baldwin, who has never won a SCORE San Felipe 250 and is a four-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion, was pulling into a commanding lead when he went out at race mile 220.9 where Wilson got by him and galloped to vic-tory in his first race in SCORE Trophy Truck. It was only the second race for the Bevly Wilson Motorsports new Jimco-built Chevy Silverado.

SCORE Overall winner Billy Wilson said at the finish line, “Starting 10th we thought we would be pretty far back in the dust and having issues. We had some naviga-tional issues with the GPS and in the first 20 miles we were kind of running in the dark and blind. It is hard to run at race speed without the GPS. Right off the bat around race mile two we noticed we had some oil cooler failures so we were pacing ourselves so we wouldn’t end the race in the first few miles. Obviously that paid off.” “This is my first race in SCORE Tro-phy Truck but I’ve been racing in SCORE for about seven years. Matomi Wash collapsed and was narrower than the truck at one point so we were scraping by. We were behind a few people swapping back and forth but you’ve got to keep a clear head, a straight face and don’t overdo it or you’ll end up hav-ing issues. We kept it cleaner than everyone else and that was the difference.”OVERALL MOTORCYCLE WINNERS The overall motorcycle and Pro Moto Unlimited winner was the team of Colton Udall, Yucca Valley, Calif./Mark Samuels, Yuc-ca Valley, Calif., who split riding time on the No. 1x Ox Motorsports Honda CRF450X. The duo took an early lead and never looked back, finishing in 4:46:41 at an average speed of 52.22 mph. It was the fifth overall motorcycle win in the SCORE San Felipe 250 for Udall and first for Samuels. Udall’s Ox teammate, Ray Dal Soglio, Scottsdale, Ariz./Nic Garvin/Daymon Stokie, Australia, finished fourth in the Pro Moto Unlimited class on another Honda CRF450X. Udall started the race, rode to race mile 30 and after Samuels rode from race mile 30 Udall got back and rode from race mile 146

to the finish. Obviously happy with his overall motorcycle victory, Udall commented, “We had a really gnarly battle with the 4x team (Francisco Arredondo) and they actually caught us over time. At race mile 146 when we changed a tire I got back on the bike and barely got in front of them. We were practically

holding hands going down the highway. I was checking my odometer and we were going 58 or 59 miles-per-hour (60 mph speed limit on paved section of the course) and just staying with each other. He had to peel off to pit and that’s the last time I saw him.” “This race course is so extremely

gnarly. It really is a test of man and machine. The big-gest terrain challenges were three and four foot-sized rock whoops where if you make any mistakes you’ll hit a rock the size of a football. It will throw the bike sideways or you’ll endo. After my pit I went down Old Puertecitos road which is extremely gnarly. “I just stuck my head down and it’s a full-body experience because it’s hard on your legs, arms, lower back and neck. I just kept on breathing through it and didn’t put the bike on the ground. I nailed everything I had through the sand washes and I got back here in one

piece so I’m happy and to win was a big bonus.”

Round 2 of the Kenda/SRT West Hare Scramble Championship returned to Northern California's District 36, home of

the Picacho Creek Hare Scramble hosted by the Salinas Ramblers. Established in 1934 the Ramblers have had a long history of putting on National caliber events including the Quicksilver National Enduro. This weekend was no exception with 14 miles of the toughest single-track most riders will see all season long! The weekend would start off with our youngest riders in the field, the pee wees! 4-8 years old on 50cc machines the racers took on the 2.5 mile course complete with river crossings, rock sections and even an escargot just before the finish! Cody Ward would get the early lead but would come up short with a DNF handing the lead over to Wyatt Burns. On the final lap in the escargot Elizabeth Edwards would make a surprise pass for the lead and take the checkered flag seconds ahead of Burns! Nor Cal MC's Lowe Lord would round out the top 3 coming from 7th on the first lap. The next race on course receiving AMA points were our Jr. Racers. 7-11 65s, 85s and Girls took to the much longer, much more technical 4.5 mile course. Steve Brunton would get off to the early lead but again a DNF would hand over the battle to Motocross Direct's Evan Slosser aboard a Husqvarna TC 85 with the FMF/DT1 backed KTM 65 pilot Tallon Van Valkenburg hot on his heels. Lots of bar banging and battling would ensue for the next hour and 10 minutes until a medical emergency - rider down on course - called for an early checkered to the race. Slosser would go on to take the Jr Mini Victory followed by Van Valkenburg who would take the win in the Micro Mini class just 10 seconds back. Shane Haywood and Talon Terlouw would round out the Jr Mini Podium with Wyatt Mattock and Tyler Mashbir 2nd and 3rd in the micro mini class. The final race of Saturday would see the fastest Youths in off-road do battle! Big Wheel, Mini and Girls from 12-15 on the same 4.5 mile course putting down close to 11 minute lap times! Off the start 2015 Jr Mini Champion Logan McChesney would get the early lead but it looked like it was going to be all Logan Campbell as he had a 17 second lead at the 1 mile mark until a cracked head sidelined him. Mateo Oliveira would take over and never look back, very similar to how he took the win at Round 1. The battle for the rest of the podium would be the one to watch now with McChesney battling with 707 Suspension teammate Wiley Kirk all the way to the finish. McChesney would finish just over a minute ahead of Kirk besting his 5th place finish a round earlier. The Girls battle would also be a great one with Haley Knott and Bailey Rhodes going back and forth all race long. Rhodes would end up with the win followed by Jaime Helm and Macey Kulikov just behind her. The second day of competition would see all

the best terrain the facility had to offer in use with a much longer 11 mile course for the Women, Masters

and all C riders. They would ride the same course as the Pro's minus the final 4 miles of extremely technical single track and the endurocross section - which many were happy to do without while others could have used the extra challenge to benefit their race. The first row off the line would be the A and B women with Garrahan Off-Road Training's Sophia Oliveira getting the early lead and having a race long battle with Sharon Mowell. Oliveira would take the win after an hour and a half of racing followed by Mowell and Brianna Vinsonhaler. While the first line would be the Women racers the overall would be decided on adjusted time with the local Vintage class and C riders all doing battle just behind the physical leaders. San Martin California's Timmy Roberts would cross the finish line physically 3rd but after starting 3 minutes behind would not only take the Race 1 overall by 42 seconds but would also take the C 250 win and the local C 250 2-stroke win! The final race of the day was lined up for the 14.5 mile course and at the drop of the green flag it was KTM of Aspen's Ian Blythe with the holeshot followed by Purvines Racing's Nuck Burson and Sierra motorsports backed Anson Maloney onto the course. Burson would make a "hairball" pass on Blythe on the first lap and would take control while reigning champion Cory Graffunder would put his SRT Off-Road KTM 300 into 3rd. In the FMF Pro 250 Class Round 1 winner Dante Oliveira looked to have his hands full in a 4 way battle with 707 Suspension teammates Dillon Sheppard and Max Parker with SRT Off-Road's JT

Baker making an early push to lead lap 2 and 3. Sheppard would make a last lap pass and take the win by 1 second over Parker and Oliveira. Burson and Blythe would make a break from the field by the 2nd lap taking their battle out front on their own while factory Husqvarna's Jacob Argubright would get past Graffunder on lap 2 but would not be able to hold off his advances falling back to 4th for the remainder of the race. “I felt like I rode well but these guys were just going so much faster in the trees!” exclaimed Argubright who is definitely at home in the more open terrain. Into the pits just before the end of the 3rd lap Burson would have to stop for goggles handing over the lead to Blythe and the race was on all the way to the finish. Blythe, now with clean air, would be able to push as hard as he could through

the tight stuff getting the checkered flag exactly 1 minute ahead of Burson. Graffunder would come across nearly a minute and a half later followed by Argubright and RMR/KTM's Travis Coy in 5th.

February 20-21, 2016Cahuilla Creek MX Park, Anza CA

By Steve Caro - Photos by Kathryn CaroCahuilla Creek MX Park echoed with the

sights and sounds of machines from the day’s past in American Motocross. Bikes

with twin shocks, drum brakes and four inches of rear suspension travel filling the track on Saturday, while on Sunday the early days of single shock long

travel suspension, water cooling and disc brakes took to the course. It was a full weekend of vintage (pre-1975) and post-vintage (1975-’92) racing as the combined forces of CALVMX and AHRMA filled the Vet Track. Host club CALVMX honored America’s first official 500cc national champion and AMA Hall of Fame inductee Mark Blackwell, naming him Grand Marshal. Primarily known as a Husqvarna rider, Blackwell was one of the first Americans to challenge the all-conquering European masters in the early days of U.S motocross. Blackwell remembered getting the motocross bug after seeing Swedish world champion Torsten Hallman at Saddleback Park in the late 1960s. He was soon on the track on a CZ then Husqvarna and later Maico during his pro-career. Former factory pro and regular vintage racing competitor Scott Burnworth recalled he had been a student in

one of Blackwell’s MX schools held in the early 1970’s. Today, Blackwell heads Mark Blackwell & Associates, providing advice to companies seeking to improve their position in the business world. Saturday’s first race featured the Premier bikes, Women, and 70+ Vintage classes. Along with serving as Southwest Regional Coordi-nator for AHRMA and handling tech-inspection prior to the races, Bill Silverthorn showed he also can pilot a vintage Husqvarna with the best in vintage racing. Silverthorn controlled both motos of the 70 Plus Expert division with two convincing wins. Fol-lowing Silverthorn across the line for second overall was Ray Atkinson (BSA). Also taking overalls were Jeff Shaffer (BSA) in Premier 1, while in Vintage Women Intermediate, Donna Blackburn kept her diminutive Hodaka ahead of the Ellen Voermans’ thumping BSA to capture the class win. Classic 125 racing was an all-European brand class with CZ’s and Husqvarna filling the gate. In the Expert division, Charlie Richardson (CZ) powered his way to a two-moto sweep to take the overall in the CALVMX portion of the race, while Robert Bellicitti (Husq) kept his pristine machine “on-the-pipe” for the overall victory in AHRMA scoring. Anthony Manning enjoyed his debut in vintage racing with overall wins in 50 Plus Vintage Intermediate on a Husqvarna, with 2-1 moto scores ahead of Mark Locke (Husq) and Charles Hilton (Hon). Manning added to his win tally by taking the gold in Vintage Sportsman 500 Intermediate, on a CZ. Manning enjoyed himself so much that he returned on Sunday and made it a trifecta, scoring the overall in GP-2 500 Intermediate in the Post-Vintage portion of the weekend on a Maico. The highlight of Saturday’s program was the terrific two-moto

battle in 50+ Vintage Expert. Entries included Scott Burnworth (Ossa), Clark Jones (CZ), Steve Ellis (Can-Am) and Mike LaPaglia (CZ). Moto one featured a Burnworth-Jones battle for the top spot, with Ellis holding down third. Burnworth increased his lead over Jones and Ellis to take the moto win. The second moto evolved into an exact replay as the three again sparred for the top spot, with Burn-worth taking both moto and overall wins, followed by Jones and Ellis. The Cahuilla Creek track crew quickly converted the course into a period correct design for the Post-Vintage (1975-’92) era machines. In Women Novice, newcomer Kylea Traughber (Hon) took wins in both motos to capture the overall win with series regular Kerri Kress (Suz) and Agina Sedler Rupert (Yam) in the runner-up positions. Kawasaki mounted Christian Hanks returned to the track after a long absence and powered his way to double moto wins in the Open Age Intermediate class. Long time series regular Vince Laker (Hon) and Rex Purdy (Yam) kept Hanks honest in both motos and garnered second and third overall on the day. The crowd pleasing three-wheelers re-turned to the track and the high flying duo of Tanner Pies and Tom Decrescente flung their trikes side-ways thru the corners and flew as far or farther than most of the two wheelers over the jumps. When the dust settled, Pies emerged with the overall win, fol-lowed by Decrescente. In the Intermediate division, the father-son pair of Jerry Nocciolo Jr. and Jerry III took the top two overall spots. Other class winners on Sunday included Cory Clark (Yam) in GP-1 250 Novice, Dave Harris (Mai) GP-1 500 Novice, Ed Larnerd (Yam) in GP-3 250 Intermediate, Steve Williams (Hon) took GP 3-500 Expert and 50 Plus GP Expert, Eric Hameis-ter (Suz) topped GP-1 125 Expert while Bob Seki (Suz) took the top spot in GP-2 125 Intermediate.

24th Annual Prairie Dogs Grand PrixMSR Presents AMA District 37 Big 6 Grand Prix Series, Round 3, Day 1, March 5, 2016Glen Helen Raceway, Devore CA

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

Round 3 of the 2016 Big 6 Grand Prix eight round series ran under cloudy skies on a Prairie Dog MC prepared

track that extended from the Boy Scout Trail at the far northwest end of the facility near the Glen Helen Regional Park to the southeast area of the Lucas Oil Short Course track. Utilizing asphalt, the west ridge, and an enduro-cross section that proved to fizzle more than one racer’s momentum with the wood section, we have a reported length of Saturday’s lay out at eight and a half miles with almost 1300 entries over the weekend, let’s race. In the West Coast Grand Prix forty-five minute Beginner through Novice race Nathan Frolich came in as the first checked on lap one. On lap two Cory Rash turns right through the scoring chicane in second on lap one, and thirteen seconds off Frolich’s time on lap two. On lap three Rash controlled the lead but an unrelenting Frolich came in just two seconds back of Rash, but this reporter saw Rash in a sand wash section going towards the Lucas Oil track and he was the fastest coming through that section and was on a mission. A mission he accomplished completing four laps for the WCGP Beginner-Novice race win and first in the Heavyweight Novice. Frolich was ten seconds back for second in race and Heavyweight Novice, and classmate Conner Schwartz third in class and race overall. Big 6 Racing’s officials have been doing their best to accommodate Woman Pro racers in the WCGP ninety-minute elite event with an increased purse and exposure of the class. Who better to show up and represent for the Woman Pro racers than multiple number one plate holder and Grand Prix racer Tatum Sik. MSR/Pro Taper/Von Zipper’s Sik held the early lead over Beta’s Morgan Tanke and Mica Diaz. In her typical jovial matter of fact description of her racing, Sik explained she would get the lead but go down and Tanke would take over and she would wonder where she came from. Sik led four of six laps relinquishing the lead to Tanke on lap three then retaking the spot on lap four. Sik lost the point on lap five to a scrappy Diaz but regained it on lap six and took it to the bank with seven laps completed for the WCGP Woman Pro win. Diaz was unrelenting in pursuit of Tanke and finished on the lead lap in second and Tanke third in the WCGP Woman Pro. In the Pro II (250cc) Maxxis/GPR/Enzo/Bell Helmets/IMS Tristen Stewart is now in the title

defense mode. Winning the 2015 WCGP Pro II gold he originally started the 2016 series in the WCGP Pro class and delivered a tenth at round one’s Adelanto Grand Prix, skipping round two he

has decided to race the Pro II for the remainder of the season. He was disappointed with the Pro II class starting behind line one of the WCGP Pro class, but the second row started made him more determined to prove he was the fast guy of the day and he was second off the start. CST Tires Mitch Anderson gets the holeshot and like many racers, the wood pit in the enduro-cross section proved a formidable obstacle with many passes being made in the chaos that periodically ensued at times. Racers dealt with it and we have Stewart first in class and thirteenth overall on lap one. Dissecting the pack one at a time, Stewart screamed his Yamaha 250 zinger into fourth overall by lap seven, finishing in the lead on lap eight with a fourth overall and first in the Pro II. Meanwhile the master of moto-trades, Beau Baron, puts in a marvelous ride for second in the Pro II, with Central Coast buddy Anderson placing third in the Pro II. Justin Jones started racing consistently in his teens, comparatively late for an aspiring racer to make the big time. He is the son of a legendary Champion, Gary Jones, and his family bleeds racing, and he has been engaged on a slow and laborious quest to be the best with top ten finishes accumulated over years of racing, then top fives and wins in the 450 A and Pro II as the pinnacle grew even closer. The dream of his first Pro victory was still just that. With the backing of OX Motorsports Honda and the 2015 WCGP Pro Champion Colton Udall to give him timely advice, Jones’ time was near. The WCCP Pro gate sits on line one and away we go with the winner of the first two 2016 WCGP Pro rounds, Blayne Thompson in the early

lead but he has company in Jones and Zip-Ty Racing’s Dalton Shirey in second and third respectively. Settling in third on lap two Jones had a front row seat to the leader Thompson and now second place Shirey as they slice and dice in a close quarter battle. At certain points around the rugged course one could have probably thrown a blanket over the two moto-gladiators. Shirey in the lead

on lap three and Thompson on his tail in second, a counter-strike by Thompson and the lead is his on lap five as Shirey moves back to second, Jones staying patient in third. While leading, Thompson runs out of fuel on lap six in a repeat heartbreak from the 2015 Ridgecrest round. Shirey has the lead with Jones in second, Udall racing in third. White flag and lap eight on the charts and it is Shirey first but Jones has the after-burners lit and obliterates thirty-eight seconds off Shirey’s gap and is just ten seconds back in second, but his boss Udall is just a second back in third and we have a great finish brewing. Shirey had his lines all set but decided to take a new line on a climb and was met with an unwelcome surprise, a kicker airmailed him over the bars and the lead was lost. Jones has the point but Udall has nothing but tough love for teammate and makes it by him for the lead which he said he held for about one-hundred yards. Blazing into a berm he took it high and lost the front wheel and was soon digging himself out of the local Devore vegetation.

Jones unknowingly went by him likely thinking Udall was long gone and second was all his, but not to be in a good way. After remounting, Udall made an outrageous surge to reduce Jones lead to three seconds but alas, too little too late. The ultimate local favorite, Jones, who spent many childhood days at Glen Helen, comes in with his first ever Pro and a beaming Glen Helen manager, Lori Bryant, who has kept watch over Jones for years, happy as a lark for a hard earned and well deserved win for Jones. Udall second, and Shirey getting back up from a hard fall takes a strong third. Thompson got things right and salvaged a seventh in the WCGP Pro. WCGP PRO ROUND 3 RESULTS 1. Justin Jones 2. 24th Annual Prairie Dogs Grand PrixMSR Presents AMA District 37Big 6 Grand Prix SeriesRound 3, Day 2, March 6, 2016Glen Helen Raceway, Devore CA

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

Day 2 of the 2016 Big 6 Grand Prix eight round racing journey saw the course was pounded by rain in the early

morning hours prior to Sunday’s round three racing. The main road to Glen Helen was

closed leading into the raceway, forcing racing enthusiasts to use the back way by Interstate 15. Working hard through the night the Prairie Dogs eliminated the entire Lucas Oil track section scrubbing off approximately two and a half miles of what was an originally an eight mile track. The Prairie Dogs Motorcycle Club’s heroic last minute changes were awarded with sunshine come late Sunday morning and most racers seemed to take the muddy conditions as part of racing so let’s get it on. CST Tires Beau Baron seems to be one that gets his share of attention especially in the Quad and UTV racing universe. His skills on the two wheels have been acknowledged for many years but not spotlighted like his four wheel accolades, however he can race the wheels off them there dirt bikes. For the 2016 Big 6 season Baron has placed second, third, and second respectively in the first three races of the WCGP Pro II. He also won the Vet Lightweight Expert grouping two times, looking for his third win in the Quad Expert for 2016. There was no challenge for Baron on this day as he skipped away from the chasers in the Quad race finishing five laps

and almost two minutes ahead of Quad Expert Matthew Hancock. Hancock was second Quad Expert with classmate Roy Bloodworth racing in at third. The Sidecars muscled their way around Sunday’s revised track changes and it was the Crumb Abrahamson team squashing the chasers setting up for a decisive win, compiling a four minute plus margin over the Morgan Pierce team after lap two was in the books, but apparently they experienced problems on lap three tumbling to fourth. The Pierce Sidecar moves into the lead for the win after moving up a position each lap. The Mark McDade machine almost thirty seconds behind for second, and Mr. Reliable Roy Watson bringing home his passenger for third. Torco/Troy Lee Designs/Zip-

Ty Racing’s Dalton Shirey has stepped up nicely to the West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP) Pro class, placing second at round one and a third in the WCGP Pro at this round. He was on or near the front of the round three WCGP Pro racing and may have won the event if he had not made a mistake, changing a line he had been using and going

over the bars on the new line while leading. He brushed himself off for the third. Racing in the Heavyweight Expert on Sunday in race fourteen of the Big 6 program, an inter-class race for Beginner through Expert riders. Shirey looked like he was out for a Sunday drive instead of a Sunday race. In assembly line fashion he railed off the laps increasing his lead over the chasers wrapping up the contest with his six laps

completed for the race and Heavyweight Expert win. Tyler Renshaw was second through the scoring table from lap one to lap six for second in race and Heavyweight Expert, classmate Jordan Gamboa finished third. The 2015 AMA National Hare and Hound Pro 250 Champion Shirey, “is a

jamming mon”. Goolsby/Dragon Goggles/Monster Energy racer Mitch Anderson is enjoying a prosperous 2016 Big 6 season placing second, sixth, and third in rounds one through three respectively. He will be looking for his third Lightweight-I Expert win, and Anderson strikes fire holding a several bike length lead over fellow Lightweight-I Expert classer, Ty

Collins. Anderson and Cullins blew away from their competitors like a tumbleweed engulfed in a howling wind on a prairie. Anderson led the class from the first lap to the sixth with the win over a distant second place Cullins, Preston Campbell third. Next on the tour will be round four, “The Hilltoppers Grand Prix”, in 29 Palms on April 2-3. Please go to www.big6racing.com for results, classing and schedule information.

SCFTA Flat Track RacingFebruary 13, 2016, Round 1Perris Raceway, Perris CA

Article & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

Let the games begin. The 2016 Southern California Flat Track Association’s twelve round

championship series is now on stage at the Perris Raceway Flat Track. We welcomed over one-hundred and sixty entrants and sorted over the buffet of thirty-one classes with twenty-eight Main events including the Open Novice B Main on the night’s grid. Under temperatures that set many heat records in various locations in Southern California, the well prepped track was up to the challenge and held up well for round one’s action. Quieter is the plan of the slide at Perris Raceway with the track being under continuous scrutiny by local residents voicing concerns about the sound of the bikes. Please consider the level of your sound at the forefront of bike preparation if not in compliance and check with the promoters regarding decibel level if you have a concern. Several of the companies that can help you solve your sound issues are Cone Engineering (coneeng.com), Southland Racing/Rocket Exhaust, Mr.Ed’s, FMF, Dr.D’s Exhaust, Pro Circuit, Yoshimura and a catalog

of others in the fabrication world. Please rid-ers, hush your sound so SCFTA stays around and the young that long for the counter-steer have a place to veer. Enough of these heart-felt serious issues, let’s race. Hammer down and let it be “Gallop-ing” Grant Holmes putting it to the competition in his first ride in the SCFTA Open Expert class, pitting him against a familiar adversary in Travis “The Ramona Raider” Petton IV. Joining them in the Open Expert Main were Chris Campos, and Woody’s Crane Service’s Byron Kukla. Holmes leveled his bike off the line and soared into turn one effortlessly, scrubbing just enough speed to get through turn two for the lap one lead. Kukla in second

with Campos melding into his line third, and Petton IV in fourth. Southland Racing/RM Parks Inc./Paint by Smokey/X-Brand goggles Holmes has been growing enough to nicely fit in his

Yamaha YZF250 seat and have good controls on the corners. Holmes on the go with a smooth and deliberate slippage style maintained the lead. Campos moves into second on a next to the last lap pass in turn two, motoring under Kukla and riding the speed into turn three for second. Petton IV moves into third and Kukla fourth.

Holmes also went wire to wire for the Main event win in the 85 Open for his second win of the night. Holmes is winning an Open Expert class at only eleven years old and will be bearing a 2016 tight schedule racing the SCFTA, California Flat Track Association, IV League Flat Track series, West Coast Dirt Track, AMA’s Dirt Track Grand Championship, and maybe some Big 6 Grand Prix racing as well. Jim Bandelin, the green is up and the start is all

his for the immediate lead in the Main event of the Vet 35+ Novice. Chris An-ders zeroes in on second and Shaun Chamlee channels behind him in third. Anders tailing Bandelin on lap three and Chamlee starting to fall off the pace in third. Anders sees the line and around he goes late in the race into the point with Bandelin slipping back into second. Anders tracks unblemished to the checkers for the Main 35+ Novice win, Bandelin second, and Chamlee third. John Vanderlaan, came in on the 2015 SCFTA season and went out with the SCFTA 2015 Pro number one plate. Involved in a serious crash at the very end of the 2015 season, as in crashing into the finish line wall on the checker flag in the last round of the season, he has since recovered and returns for another SCFTA season and possibly a

repeat title. Fon-tana Radiator’s Jeff Johnson, guides his bike off the chalk on the start and into turn one of the 20 lap Main. Vanderlaan plows into the lead past former National racer Johnson, screeching into the back stretch on a mission. Going into lap

eight of the frenzied Main, Vanderlaan has about a twenty bike length over Joe Roberts in second, Dylan Morin, and Foster Brother’s Racing’s Colt Foster at the end of the sec-ond-fourth column. Riding smooth as glass Vander-laan goes into the zone and leaves the pack behind for the win. Roberts closes out second with an unrelenting Dylan Morin in third at the checkers. Foster’s teammate Alex Crosby was not so brotherly beating out Foster near the finish for fourth, Foster closes out the top five of the Pro Main. Please go to SCFTAracing.com for schedule information.
