WANTED: VOLUNTEERS FOR SENIOR SERVICES
The Area Agency on Aging of Somerset County is actively recruiting volunteers for a wide variety of pro-
grams and services. If you have a passion to help our seniors of Somerset County, then we would like
to talk with you.
Apprise Program: Become an APPRISE volunteer! Most APPRISE counselors are volunteers who start
out as concerned citizens who have a question or issue regarding their own health insurance. Once
they find the answer, they want to learn more and share what they have learned with others. As an AP-
PRISE volunteer, you will receive free training about Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Medi-
gap, Medicare prescription drug coverage, appeals, fraud & abuse and much more. You can become a
counselor, a speaker, an assistant, a data entry person or even a writer. Whatever your talents may be,
there is an opportunity for you to volunteer.
Ombudsman Program: If you can give at least two hours a month, we need you as an Ombudsman
volunteer. As an Ombudsman, you help support the consumers who can advocate for themselves while
advocating for those who cannot. While visiting the long-term care facilities, you help educate the con-
sumers of their rights and responsibilities. You will have a great support team, with a certified Ombuds-
man who is always available to answer any questions/concerns. Training is required and completed at
your own pace; however, some travel is involved.
Senior Center Volunteers: Volunteers are welcomed on a daily basis. A volunteer could do anything
as simple as cleaning tables, working the front desk, counting daily monies to participating on commit-
tees, promoting trips and fundraising. For more information and a listing of other volunteer areas, see
our website for a senior center near you (www.co.somerset.pa.us).
Volunteer Drivers: Adults aged 60 and over, who seek transportation to medical services and have no
other means of transportation, are served by volunteers who both drive and act as a personal assistant.
The volunteers pick up the passenger at his/her home, travel to a medical facility and return the passen-
ger to his/her home, using the volunteer’s vehicle. All drivers receive mileage, parking, tolls and meal
reimbursement. Destinations include out of Somerset County locations and often cover time outside of a
typical 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. Trips are arranged to meet the needs of both the passenger and the
volunteer.
Call us today to see which of our volunteer positions would best suit your needs. Please call: 814
-443-2681 or 1-800-452-0825 and ask to speak with Missy Beam, Volunteer Coordinator.
