SPRING 2015 Inside this issue: Carl F. Clavenna, M.D. Gregory B. Fitzgerald, M.D. What is a Refraction? Why do You Need it? A refraction is the test that is performed to determine your best potential vision which then can be used for an eyeglass prescription. A refraction may be performed by either the doctor or a technician, and typically involves questioning along the lines of, “Is 1 better than 2?” Sometimes vision insurance covers the refraction fee along with a routine eye exam. However, Medicare and many other insurance plans consider a refraction to be routine vision care not covered under their medical coverage. The refraction fee is charged separately and is paid directly by the patient. Medicare secondary insurance plans will also not pay the charge since it is not a Medicare-covered service. Even if it is medically necessary to have your eyes examined and your best vision potential determined, the refraction portion may very well not be covered. This all can certainly be confusing and frustrating; nevertheless, a refraction plays a vital part in a patient’s eye care. It is best to contact your insurance provider to know what exactly is covered and what is not covered. Preventing Eye Injuries Eye Health in Sports: Tens of thousands of sports-related eye injuries occur each year. The good news is that 90% of serious eye injuries are preventable through use of appropriate protective eyewear. For all age groups, sports-related eye injuries occur most frequently in baseball, basketball, and racquet sports. Boxing and full-contact martial arts pose an extremely high risk of serious and even blinding eye injuries. There is no satisfactory eye protection for boxing, although thumbless gloves may reduce the number of injuries. In baseball, ice hockey and men’s lacrosse, a helmet with a polycarbonate (an especially strong, shatterproof, lightweight plastic) face mask or wire shield should be worn at all times. Protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses should be worn for sports such as basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey. If you already have reduced vision in one eye, consider the risks of injuring the stronger eye before participating in contact or racquet sports, which pose a higher risk of eye injury. Please ask our opticians about the protective eyewear we have at our office. What is a Refraction? Why do You Need it?
