    over the years.

    India Lies in You -Is what is good for the society good for the self?India Lies in You is a celebration of

    individual achievements as also an appreciation

    of what an individual can achieve for the uplift-

    ment of the society to which he or she belongs.

    It is an acknowledgement of the fact that Indi-

    ans should move ahead together, not by leaving

    one behind. We are intrinsically linked to the

    society we belong to, to its progress or decay.

    Truly every one of us is a part of everyone else.

    This was a one day event conducted on 30 th

    January, 2010 at RavindraBhavan, Margao. The

    core of the event was the screening of the

    movie MANTHAN followed by a panel discus-

    sion on the topic Is what is good for the soci-

    ety good for the self? It is possibly the only film

    ever to be sponsored by Indian farmers. The

    movie is about how a milk co-operative society

    was formed in Gujarat. It is story of courage and

    sheer dedication to reach their goal of setting

    up the co-operative society. A typical examplewhich explains the core theme of the event. The

    movie revolves around a veterinary surgeon (a

    character based on the now famous Dr Kurian)

    who comes to a village to set up a milk co-

    operative society for the local herdsmen and

    their families who were over the decades tor-

    tured by heartless zamindars. The society wasan ultimate solution to generate income for

    these poor farmers/herdsmen and to outdo

    with the zamindari pressures. The challenge

    faced by him to educate the villagers about the

    advantage of having this in their village andfinally even after him leaving the village the

    movement continues till date and is now known

    as the famous Amul Co-operative Movement.

    The screening of the movie was fol-

    lowed by a panel discussion. The moderator for

    the discussion was Ms. Yogita Limaye, (senior

    correspondent Anchor CNN IBN.) There were

    several eminent personalities for the discussion,

    Mr. G Muralidharan, (Chief Mentor, Akshara Net-

    work) , Mr. Venkat Krishnan N (Director, GIVE

    INDIA Foundation and Co-Founder, Eklavya Educa-

    tion Foundation), Mr. Sachin Tendulkar( Sr. Pro-

    gram Manager at Mineral Foundation of Goa),

    Mr. Ramesh Kulkarni (Author of 2 films "The

    American Way...","The Purpose of Life").

    The next programme was social entre-

    preneurship plan competition. The main focus

    of the business plan was its benefit to society.

    After that was Oorja, a creative dance competi-

    tion. Then was community video competition

    followed by Poster competition and last but not

    the least kids drawing competition. The pro-

    gramme was concluded with prize distribution.

    CONVOCATIONThe 3rd Annual Convocation of Sri Sri

    Institute of Management Studies, Margao was

    held on 30th

    April 2010 at Nanu Resorts Betal-

    batim. The Convocation ceremony was graced

    by Shri Mukul Deoras, (CEO and MD Colgate

    Palmolive (India) Ltd.), the Chief Guest for the

    day. Other dignitaries on the dais were Shri

    Vijay Chowgule, (Chairman Board of Governors

    of SSIMS), Shri Yezdi Batliwala, (founder trus-

    tee of SSIMS), Shri Shantanu Prakash, (trustee

    member of SSIMS), Shri Pravas Naik, (Chairman

    of Managing Committee of SSIMS), Shri Bhaskar

    Assoldekar, (member Managing Committee

    SSIMS) and Dr. Pradeep Salgaonkar, (Director

    of SSIMS).

    Dr. Pradeep Salgaonkar, Director of

    the Institute read out the Annual Report. He

    briefed the gathering on the Summer Intern-

    ship Program, Intercollegiate management

    events organized, faculty workshops under-

    taken, Final Placements etc. The Placementsof the graduating students were very encour-

    aging. Some of the students got job Offers of

    Rs. 5 to 5.5 lacs. The Director also informed the

    audience about the New Campus coming up at

    Raia.

    shared some instances of his work experience

    and urged the passing out students to laymore emphasis on ethics and good values for

    a successful career.

    The NGOs like Goa Mineral

    Foundation and AIMS encour-

    aged students to complete

    projects in the field of market-

    ing so as to spread the aware-

    ness of their existence and

    social work done by these or-

    ganizations in Goa. Not only

    did the students excel in their

    assigned projects but also con-

    tributed largely to the various

    companies by providing valu-

    able survey results and recom-

    mendations.

    He gave away the gold medal for

    outstanding academic performance which

    was bagged by SSIMS student Mr. Konrad

    Torrado. Mr. Shrikrishna Potdar secured

    award for the best outgoing student and Mr.

    Kartik Namdeo secured the award for best

    Dissertation.

    Students Interact with Committee

    The Orientation Program for the first year students was held on July 19, 2010 with theManagement Committee and the Director. Mr. Sudhir Desai, Public Relationship officer introducedthe Committee members and welcomed all to the session. The members present on the dais wereMr. Pravas K. Naik the Chairman, Mr. Ravindranath S Kamat, Dr Venkatesh P Hedge, Mr. BhaskarAssoldekar, Mr. Arjun Chowgule and Dr. Pradeep Salgaonkar the Director of SSIMS.

    Mr. Pravas K. Naik addressed the students, and gave his views of how to be a good man-ager.He emphasized that all students should take up responsibilities. This includes ones personalattitude and our skills to work with people around us. He said no one wants to have unproductiveworkers and we should be worth what we get.

    Mr. R.S.Kamat beautifully shared his ideas with fresher's and he explained with a greatexample. He asked us whether we had actually seen an uncut and unpolished diamond, many of ussaid no, and then he asked us whether we had seen a polished diamond, and the answer wasunanimously yes. He said an uncut and unpolished diamond does not attract the attention unlikethe final product. He said now we are just like a diamond in its initial stages. But once we finish ourcourse we should change ourselves into a beautiful diamond and attract prospective employersand create a value and demand for ourselves.

    Mr. Bhaskar Assoldekar gave a motivational talk to the students who were present. He alsostressed on how the students should go about to achieve success.

    Dr. Hedge focused on Mind Management in his brief and effective talk. He said the realchallenge starts once they become managers. He said the tough work starts then. In order to besuccessful in longer run and to take our career forward an individual must learn to manage hismind. If we are not able to handle stress and pressure in work place, then there is less scope for usto develop our career.

    He also emphasized on mind management. He briefed about the techniques of mindmanagement. He also said how Art of Living programs help us achieve this goal.

    Mr. Arjun Chowgule had an informal interaction with students. After students introduc-

    tion, Mr. Arjun Chowgule introduced himself. As a Businessman he shared his views as to whatheexpects from his employee and the attitude one needs to acquire. He said we should considerourselves like a product and successfully market to get the best results. Then he touched upon theYES+ program to be conducted for the 1 st year students and the benefits from the program. Healso said that one should not aspire to live life without challenges or aspirations. We should alwaysface new challenges and constantly look for new opportunities in life.

    Freshers party

    Freshers party, nobetter way to welcome thefirst years to SSIMS!! Thesecond year students with alot of zeal and enthusiasm

    organized a party to welcomethe first year students. Theparty began at 12 noon andcontinued up to 5 pm. Thedirector Mr. Pradeep Sal-gaonkar along with the staffand faculty members wit-nessed the party.

    The party took offwith the second years beau-tifully complied introductoryvideo presentation, speciallydesigned for the juniors. Thiswas followed by the first yearstudents introducing them-selves along with some funactivities. The most entertain-ing part was the Dj and Jamsessions following the lunchbreak. Throughout the activi-ties the first year studentswere continuously evaluatedto qualify for the Mr. Fresherand Miss Fresher 2010 andspot prizes were also givenout.

    Gauri Vernekar wascrowned as Miss Fresher 2010and Karthik Rao as Mr.Fresher 2010.

    Carbon Footprint (Presented by:- Naresh Soni, Asma Issani, Akash Shirodkar )

    Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only

    a year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 millionpeople across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CNTower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Romes Colosseum, all stood in dark-ness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.Earth Hour 2010 was held from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time, March 27. Earth Hour 2010 was

    reportedly the biggest Earth Hour yet, as 126 countries participated in the movement. But why

    such day has come, when whole world has to switch off it lights and be in dark for one hour?

    The reason is none other than rapid climate change thats happening due to global warm-

    ing. Climate change is already affecting our livesand the places we live. Scientists have learnt that

    there are several greenhouse gases responsible for warming, and humans emit them in a variety

    of ways. Most come from the combustion of fossil fuels in cars, factories and electricity produc-

    tion. The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other contribu-tors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive sys-

    tems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial

    processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2.

    Greenhouse gases like CO2 absorb this infrared radiation from sunlight and trap the heat in the atmosphere and do allow it to passthrough them. This results in increase of earth temperature that causes global warming. Levels of several important greenhouse gases haveincreased by about 25 per cent since large-scale industrialization began around 150 years ago.Global warming happens due to greenhouse effect, which is also aided by something called carbon foot print of individuals. A carbon foot-print is "the total set of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product. For simplicity of reporti ng, it isoften expressed in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent of other GHGs, emitted.

    How to reduce carbon foot print?

    Change your light bulbs to eco onesOne of the simplest things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint is replace your homes conventional light bulbs with energy-savingones. The latter used to be really expensive but prices have dropped dramatically and they come in all shapes and sizes, as well as differentwattages and hues

    Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer etc.) Unplug the mobiles when charged, also dont keep appliances on standby mode. That little colored standby light uses 10-60 per

    cent of the energy needed to power the appliance when in use, so always switch it off at the socket. Turn down the AC slightly (try just 5 degrees C from the ambient temp) Fill your washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder. Do your weekly shopping in a single trip Travel less and travel more carbon footprint friendly, Car share to work, or for the kids school run

    Use the bus or a train as much possible rather than your car, for short journeys either walk or cycle and Recycle as much as possible.

    The RUPEE Symbol(Presented by:- Trupthi Govekar, Satyajit Dessai, Kapil Keny)In 2008, the Indian Government hinted about the possible creation of Rupees new symbol which had excited the public. Two years

    later, , the Indian Currency (Indian Rupee) has finally joined the elite club of currencies, consisting of the US dollar, British pound sterling,Euro and Japanese yen, making it the 5th currency in the world to have a clear distinguishing identity.

    The symbol has been created to recognize the increasing economic linkages between India and the world and to further highlightthe strength and robustness of the Indian economy as a favored destination for global investments. The symbol reflects and ca ptures Indianethos and culture. It standardizes the expression of Indian rupee in different languages. It also distinguishes the Indian currency from thosecountries whose currencies are also designated as rupee or rupiah, such as Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

    This symbol was chosen from a public competition announced in 2009 and after several rounds of selection of those symbols the cabinetfinalised 5 symbols. The selection was based on the decision of a jury headed by Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Ms. Usha Thorat.The Symbol was finally chosen was the creation of IIT post-graduate Mr. D Udaya Kumar. The winning entry from IIT Bombay studentMr. D Udaya Kumar is a blend of Ra in Devanagri script and R in Roman. Two parallel lines crossing this Ra or R denot e the symbol isequal to one Indian rupee. It also denotes the stability of the economy. The design is based on the tricolor, with two lines at the top andwhite space in between.

    The new symbol: Replaces the Rs, Re, INR that is used at present.

    Will not be used on currency notes and coins. For Indian Market, the Keyboards will have the rupee symbol to facilitate ease of use. For External market, the IT companies will have to incorporate the symbol in their operative software to enable the computer users

    worldwide to use the symbol even if it is not embedded on the keyboards. (This will be on the lines of Euro symbol, which is not embed-ded on the keyboards used in India).

    The Brand, The Vision. -The symbol is being envisioned as a brand ambassador of the Indian economy to the world showcasing its grow-ing Image in the world Economy.

    Executive Seminar by Mr. Amit Sawant

    Executive seminar was conducted on 31/07/2010 at Sri Sri Institute of Management Studies. The Guest speaker for the seminar wasMr. Amit Sawant (Margao Branch Head, ING bank). He possesses an Engineering Degree from Regional Engineering College Surat, and MBAfrom Kirloskar institute of management studies Karnataka. He has worked with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited as an Operationsofficer for 3 year after which he joined Kenna Metal Widia India limited as a Junior Sales Engineer. After few years of service, he took aplunge into a totally new area, Insurance. He joined Bajaj Alliance Life Insurance as a sales manager and worked for a year. Later he joined

    ICICI bank and worked there for 4 years and is currently the Branch Head of ING bank, Margao.

    Mr. Sawant delivered a motivational talk and stressed on the right attitude that students who appear for the interviews shouldpossess, what should be their behavior while answering questions, so also the importance of academic performance and extracurricularactivities. He said that one should be ready to take up challenges. It is courage which counts the most in the job taken up.

    Students were enlightened on various key pointers highlighted by Mr. Sawant regarding career growth and posed many queries tohim. They wanted to know what is the scope for banking jobs in Goa, to which he replied affirmatively but also cautioned th em that theywont get placed in managerial positions instantly and that they have to work as an Executive, to start with and the skills and abilities heacquired will help him to climb up the Corporate ladder. They also enquired as to what are the future job prospects in priva te banks towhich he said that compared to public sector there is more future prospect in private sector banks and higher rate of job availability in pri-vate sector. The next question was whether there are separate Customer Relationship Management (CRM) posts for different servicesprovided by bank like insurance, bank accounts and the like ,to which he replied affirmatively.

    The students gained a lot of valuable knowledge especially the first year students, since it was their first executive seminar for this

    academic year. Not only was there knowledge imparted regarding career opportunities but also about future prospects in banking sector

    were included. The lead points to be kept in mind while going through interviews especially attitude were specially stressed upon.
