network over short to medium distances, especially in areas where the choice of implementing optical fibres could betoo expensive and time consuming andinfrastructure space is at a premium.Integrated in a wide range of SiemensMobile products, SRA 4 is designed toprovide capacities from single to multiple155Mb/s data channels, up to a totaltransport capability of 622 Mb/sinterfacing both SONET (OC-3/ OC-12)and SDH ( STM-1 / 2x STM-1/ STM-4)worlds and complying with FCC and ETSIradio channel arrangements.

The continued growth of cellularsubscribers worldwide is driving thecellular backhaul market for microwaveradios and is pushing SDH further outtowards the regional transport layer oflarge networks, down to the access layer.Furthermore the increase in voice traffic, combined with the newly emergingcellular data market, increases customerrequirements for spectrum efficiency and equipment flexibility as well SRA 4,the new Siemens SDH split radio systemmeets these needs, addressing newcapacity demands of telecommunication

Mobile networks

Today UMTS networks require wirelesssystems able to transport traffic datadifferent for rate and technology. In the UTRAN, in fact, ATM is used forconnecting NodeB-RNC or for intra-RNClinks; in the core network, moreover, bothpacket and circuit data transmission isusually performed not only with opticalfibre networks but also with high capacitymicrowave systems. SRA 4 with full compatibility with all thesetechnologies and high system scalability, represents the ideal choice, ensuring cost-effective ultrahigh capacity applications toall typical mobile networks such as rings, mesh or star topologies. The full RF frequency coverage (6-38 GHz)and the multiple modulation type over thesame hardware platform makes SRA 4 asingle solution for each mobile operatorwho needs high performances and highspectrum efficiency, but with at the sametime just one platform for deploying theentire IP/ATM/SDH wireless network.Unlike the fibre alternative, SRA 4 point-to-point solution is cost effective, flexible andquick to deploy up to STM-4 capacity, minimising the risk of interoperability issuesbecause it fits with all worldwidemicrowave standards.

Fixed / Access networks

SRA 4 is otherwise the ideal choice forbuilding fixed or access networks with atotal wireless approach or also, thanks to itsdifferent baseband interfaces, with an easycombination with any existing cablesystems. With its simple split-mountsolution bringing up to STM-4 capacity, itrepresents a cheap, easy-to-deploy andhighly reliable point to point transmissionsystem. The particular system concept privilegestwo fundamental issues for any operator:flexibility and scalability. SRA 4 can be setup for a gradual deployment since, as thepenetration rate raises, the transportedcapacity can be increased remotely andcompletely via software. SRA 4 provides dedicated high capacitywireless connections for every accessoperator type: from large enterprises tomulti-dwelling businesses.

Page 5: SRA4 Brochure

SRA 4 is a product combining highcapacity and high bandwidth efficiencyinto a single radio platform. Capacity canbe doubled as well as bandwidth can beoptimised with simple SW operations andabove all without any HW change. TheIndoor Unit system, 88 mm high, iscomposed of a few slide-units: ControllerUnit, Alarm Unit, Fan Unit and two BB-Modems. This modularity ensurescustomers a basic characteristic wirelesssystems: a high level of scalability. Theother fundamental operator requirement, flexibility, is ensured by the possibility todouble the capacity from STM-1 to2xSTM-1 (single-carrier) without any HWintervention, neither indoor nor, especially, outdoor.

Frequency efficiencyWith the benefit of a modulation formatcompletely software selectable from 32TCM to 128 TCM, in fact, the equipmentcan offer a high spectrum efficiency byoptaining the same capacity within halfband (STM-1 in 27.5/28 MHz/2x STM-1 in55/56 MHz) with a considerable saving ofspectrum in a given geographical area aswell as cost saving in licence fees. Moreover the frequency efficiencyallocation can be doubled using dualpolarization co-channel transmissionachieved with a fully digital crosspolarization interference canceller (XPIC).

Capacity upgradingIncreasing capacity of the existing linksrequires additional transmissionbandwidth available and adequate systemgain to maintain the overall networkquality. SRA4 is able to guarantee allthese features. Its capacity is easilysoftware upgradeable. Using a singlehardware, in fact, SRA 4 can immediatelyensure up to 4xSTM-1 active bearersgiving the same spectral efficiency of asingle STM-1/OC-3.

System ConfigurationThe right system forany ring networkThe same HW can be configured in a ringas 2x(1+0) giving the possibility to makethe Est-West direction in a ring, using asingle IDU and two ODU (one per eachside). With no additional hardwarecomponents, capacity can successively bedoubled (from 1 to 2xSTM-1 (single-carrier) as shown in the figure below)through the variation of the modulationlevel (from 32 to 128 TCM) completelyselectable via software.

N+1 configuration Equipment configuration is designed to be scalable from to1+1 up to N+1.The system can be expanded to a multi-channel N+1 (N<3) configuration withoutany external additional switching system. The implication of N+ 1 system was therequirement for large amounts ofbandwidth to accommodate the numeroustraffic-bearing channels.

The outdoor unit, besides RF receptionand transmission, carries out signalconversion for sending it to the indoorunit through a coaxial cable. The outdoorunit houses one RF transceiver per case. The outdoor unit case, once in field, doesnot need to be open requiring only verysimple and easy operations either duringinstallation or maintenance and test phases.

Broadest frequency coverage The wide RF frequency coverage (from 6up to 38 GHz) gives the operator thepossibility to find the right solution forevery local application inside the network.

High order modulation and advanced error correction128 TCM modulation scheme with Reed Solomon error correction, supportingSTM-1/ 2xSTM-1 payload transmission in 28/56 MHz, optimizes bandwidthoccupancy. The major benefit of thismodulation format is a strongly enhancederror correction capability and bit errorrate performance, if compared withconventional QAM systems.

Automatic TransmitterPower Control (ATPC)and Remote TransmitPower Control (RTPC)Continuous ATPC or RTPC (SW selectable)in 15 dB range (1 dB stepped).

Frequency AgilityFrequency channel can be adjusted completely via SW (LinkViewer LCT/NetViewer NMS) as a wide tuning rangegives the radio maximum flexibility.

Cross Polar Operation (Option)Dual polarization co-channel transmissioncan be achieved with a fully digital crosspolarization interference canceller(XPIC).The Cross-Polarization InterferenceCanceller (XPIC) guarantees properreduction of cross-polarizationinterferences also during non-nominalpropagation conditions and allowsfrequency use on both polarizations, doubling transmission capacity.

both, LCT LinkViewer and NetViewer, by the former on a link base, by the latterpointing to each of the Radio Systemsconnected to the network. Siemensmicrowave product lines, can be managednot only by a wide range SiemensManagement Systems but also by thirdparty Management Systems. Even when the NetViewer is connected to the network, LinkViewer can make the link reconfiguration at any basednetwork point.

SRA4 management systems carry out allthe functions required for minimisingoperational costs. LCT LinkViewer, the system dedicated to the local linkmanagement, connects the SRA4 local andfar-and terminals through the F interface. In addition NetViewer, combining Elementwith Network Management functions, is the Radio Network Manager for all theSiemens Radio Systems.
