as Spencer Blake — or “Agent K”— whileonatop-secretmissionthathe undertooksometimein1958.Attherequestothethen

Commander o the

British Secret Intelligence Service, whowentunderthecodename“D,”

Blakeusedhisexperiencesonthatmissiontoproduceacompleteguideto

everythinganyonemightwanttoknowaboutspiesandtheworldospying.

SpencerBlakewasalsoahandyspy — heincludedseveral “novelties”to

amuseandeducatenewrecruits,includinga spy lingo booklet, a small mirror in

the corner o one page(toobservethosebehindyou), a surveillance technique

booklet, as well as a variety o faps and booklets on disguises, inormation

gathering, and other spy crat. Inaddition,thebookitselisauseulspytool,

sinceembeddedintheinsidebackcoverisa working code-breaking mechanism

called the Cryptotron, whichcanbeusedtobothsendanddeciphercoded

messages.Therontothebookeaturesa tinted red magniying glass,useul

inreadingbothhiddenred/greentypeandmicro-printing.

Besidesaspymanual,however,thebookalsodetails an actual mission

undertakenbyBlakein1958.Hismissionwasto investigate the secret

criminal organization CODEX,which,thereaderdiscovers,hadplanstoreleasedeadlyanthraxinallotheworld’scapitalcitiesin an attempt

to destabilize the globe andsogaincontrol.

Inanunusualscenarioorthetime,Blakehadtoworkwith both

an American and a Soviet agentinordertobringdownCODEX.

Blakeandhisellowspiestraveltheglobe,goingundercover,
