Introduction

Music has many faces that we use in our everyday life. It is part of peoples’ everyday experience where life moves-on making yesterday lives on

today. Places around the world have different expressions of music. It may be related to work, rituals/ceremonies, politics, etc. It will also describe the

skills, knowledge, and performance outcomes required to develop among

Grade 10 Learners and to acquaint them with lessons about Afro-Latin American and Popular Music. It also encompasses the critical understanding

of identifying historical and cultural background and analyzing musical characteristics of Afro-Latin American and popular music. Also, the learners

will explore ways of creating sounds on a variety of sources suitable to chosen vocal and instrumental selections, and perform selections of Afro-Latin

American and popular music in appropriate pitch, rhythm, style, and

expression with the use of guided rubrics.

Art is said to be a diverse range of human activities involving the creation of visual, auditory or performing artifacts which the creators/artist

used to express his/her imagination, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. It

will describe the level of skills and understanding of Grade10 learners about Technology-Based Art. Art Lessons encompasses the critical understanding

of identifying techniques about Technology-Based Art as one of the virtual and

digital arts.

Physical Education activities in this trying time is difficult to manage.

Nowadays, students like you and mostly teenagers are very much engaged in different online and computer games which leads you not to move and stretch

your body in different physical activities. Most of the students-even elementary graders- know how to operate cellular phones, laptops, and other

electronic devices but having a hard time joining physical activities such as jogging, exercising, or even joining various sports. This will lead to many

serious health problems both mentally and physically. So, it’s time for you to

change! Welcome to the part where you will learn many things. You will be

provided with the activities that will test your prior knowledge, stimulate your interest, and elevate your understanding and level of excitement in the

different activities. This part of the self-learning module will help you get started and be mentally ready for the next part.

Health of the citizens contributes to economic growth and nation-building. Health is so important that laws were created to protect and

promote the health of the people. The first part of our discussion pertains to laws which address threats to public health such as disease outbreaks and

other health events. Mental and social health problems are also given attention, as well as safety in the environment. These laws were created to

Page 4: Guided Learning Activity Kit

ensure that health concerns are properly addressed. They were also passed

to prevent, or at least make less serious, the effect of these health problems.

This Guided Learning Activity Kit (GLAK) is designed to provide learners with the practical knowledge needed in Music, Art, Physical

Education, and Health10 this 2nd Quarter. May it help the learners nourish their body, mind, and spirit.

Discussion

Music is Life. It has been part of our daily life. Like the African people

do every day whether it is for work, religion, different ceremonies or even the

way they communicate with other people. They sing, dance, clap, and beat

the drums during the celebration of different ceremonies like birth, death,

initiation, marriage, and funerals.

In 1550-1880 history shows that during

the times of slave trade elements in Moorish,

African & Caribbean, the music were adapted

that many find most distinctive in its rhythms,

which is believed to have brought an estimated

two million people of Moorish descent, while in

fact the Moors had domination and inhabitation for over 2000 years in what

is now known as the west into the Caribbean Islands.

1776 was the year where Moors of North American and some that were

enslaved were forbidden from playing drums, but in other places like in the

New Orleans Congo Square, Caribbean slaves were liberally allowed to play

Page 6: Guided Learning Activity Kit

4 | Page

their drums, which of course were not only

for recreation and entertainment, but used

as a means of communicating.

Where did the Afro-Latin American music come from?

Tracing back on the origins of Latin

American music, it was then during the Spanish and Portuguese conquest of

the Americans in the 16th century, when the European settlers brought their

music from overseas. Latin America comprises different regions such as the

Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Central and South America.

In the 18th-19th Centuries, Rhythms were spread, developed, and

canonized throughout the Caribbean, at the same time another American art

form was beginning its conception this is the North American art form. It

contains a rich cultural mix that is incorporated by blues intonation, African

drums and rhythms, Indian cymbals, European instruments, harmony, and

musical forms with a syncopated beat namely jazz.

Every country and every island in the Caribbean developed its own

unique musical culture, be it folk idioms or national conservatory styles.

There were four countries that were identified showing unique musical

culture, namely Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico who have the most

significant influences on music in the United States. These influences

included Latin rhythms and/or dances that infatuated the United States, like

the habanera, bolero (Cuba), samba, bossa nova (Brazil), tango (Argentina),

and mariachi (Mexico).

An article entitled: Roots of African American Music (Smithsonian

Music Page) States that, African American music cannot be separated from

the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the forced transportation of millions of

African people across the Atlantic who were then enslaved.

Slaves' lives were restricted in innumerable ways, but among them

included limits on literacy and property ownership. Music was therefore

passed down orally, and early records of African American music indicate that

songs changed frequently, not just from singer to singer, but also from day to

day when sung by the same musician. Music was a solace, a community-

builder, and voice for hope during enslavement and afterward, in the days of

Reconstruction and then Jim Crow, (Smithsonian).

African popular music as a whole

has been influenced by European

countries, African-American and Afro-

Latin music, and region-specific styles

that became popular across a wider range

of people. Although due to the significance

and strong position of culture in

traditional African music, African popular

music tends to stay within the roots of

traditional African Popular Music.

Discussion

COMPUTER/DIGITAL ARTS

Origin and Early Stages

Computer art or digital art was introduced in the early 1960s. It is

making use of electronic and mechanical devices, rather than the artist’s own

hand, to produce the desired images and effects-these are definitely

technology-based artforms-personal gadgets such as laptops, tablets, and

android phones have incorporated the artistic capabilities of the large-scale

computers.

Early experimenters were not necessarily artists, but engineers and

scientists who had access to and experience with the hardware needed. They

began to recognize the potential of artistic expression through the application

of scientific and mathematical principles. Along the way You will note a strong

scientific or mathematical look and feel to the creations of many digital

artists-geometric forms and repeating patterns appear frequently. More

traditional subjects like human beings, landscapes, animals, and still life

elements are simply incorporated as part of those forms and patterns. Rather

than as the main focus-there were questions as to whether it was, in fact,

“true art” since it made use of electronic and mechanical devices, rather than

the artist’s own hand, to produce the images and effects.

Exhibits of computer art became highly popular and critically

acclaimed, as digital artists or computer art masters or “superstars” came to

Page 11: Guided Learning Activity Kit

9 | Page

the fore in Europe, Russia, and the United States-some digital artists have

even used their works to express their views on political, social, and cultural

issues; as well as to advocate causes that are critical to modern life, such as

the environment and climate change and others even explore the

philosophical relationship between science and technology and the arts. The

Philippine Scene-Filipino artists were likewise influenced by the technology

trend in art. However, this was more in the commercial sphere-from the 1960s

to the 1990s, their computer-generated works were primarily geared towards

illustrating for international comic books. Filipino illustrators earned quite a

reputation for their talents and were highly in demand in this field. The

concept of computer-generated works as a means of serious artistic

expression gained ground among the younger generation of local artists-

artists and critics alike. Acceptance and recognition of digital works as fine

art-there are also institutions offering training courses on the digital arts,

such as the First Academy of Computer Arts, the Philippine Center for

Creative Imaging (PCCI), as well as the Technical Education and Skills

Development Authority (TESDA) through scholarships given by the Animation

Council of the Philippines (ACPI). Courses such as these open up an array of

career opportunities for young Filipinos in the fields of advertising, animation

design

Some digital artists used their works to express their feelings in

different ways; their views and opinions on political, social, and cultural issues; their passion in life presenting personal advocates.

The Philippine Scene

Pilipino people have a penchant for bringing art and architecture to a whole

new level. They love to design creatively, to think intuitively, and have a

passion for anything different and unique. Many art critics still doubt the

Filipino-ness of the artworks produced by Filipinos. Tradition where works

and artists came from makes one to question its authenticity. For example,

our painters learned Western painting tradition (canvas, paintbrush, easel)

blemishes the authenticity of the Filipino works. The rhythmic patterning in

Philippine arts seems to stem from the Filipinos’ highly devotional attitude

towards the divine and the predisposition towards experiencing life as an

integrated whole, inspiring in them a deep sense of community and feeling of

harmony with the vital rhythms of existence.

Eventually, the concept of computer-based artworks was introduced in the

Philippines, and was recognized and accepted by Filipino artists. To view

Discussion

Fitness is a universal concern. Whatever endeavors you are in, whatever activities you do, your fitness should always be taken into account if you are to perform them effectively and efficiently. Fitness is

not just for athletes, sportsmen, PE teachers and fitness instructors. It’s also a concern of students, parents, and other members of the

community. If we are to become strong and productive members of our community, we must address the very basic requirement of such a goal,

the sustaining base of any endeavor we undertake, which is fitness.

Physical activity simply means movement of the body that uses energy. Walking, gardening, briskly pushing a baby stroller, climbing

the stairs, playing soccer, or dancing the night away are all good examples of being active. For health benefits, physical activity should

be moderate or vigorous intensity.

Benefits of Physical Activity

● Improve your brain health

● weight management

● reducing disease

● strengthening your bones and muscles

● improving your ability to do everyday activities. Among older adults, physical activity also reduces the risk of falling and

injuries from falls. Physical activity programs that include more than one type of physical activity are most successful at reducing falls and fall-related

injuries. Different types of physical activity include aerobic, muscle strengthening, and balanced physical activities.

Exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. It is performed for various

reasons, to aid growth and improve strength, preventing aging, developing muscles and the cardiovascular system, honing athletic

skills, weight loss or maintenance, improving health and also for enjoyment. Exercise is a key part of staying healthy, but figuring out

how to get more active can be tough.

Discussion

Public Health Concerns

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are threats to the health

of the public. These outbreaks of infectious diseases frequently happen in

different parts of the world (Pruitt et al., 2001). Other forms of threats to

public health are events in the environment such as chemical or radio-

nuclear explosions. The potential for exposure to threats of emerging and re-

emerging diseases increases with changes in our society and the environment

(Donatelle & Davis, 1999). According to the Mandatory Reporting of

Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act (RA

11332), the first line of defense to epidemics and health events of public

health concerns are disease surveillance and response systems. Response to

these public health concerns includes verification, contact tracing, rapid risk

Page 22: Guided Learning Activity Kit

assessment, case measures, treatment of patients, risk communication,

conduct of prevention activities, and rehabilitation.

Public Health Concerns

parts of the world (Pruitt et al., 2001). Other forms of threats to public health

are events in the environment such as chemical or radio-nuclear explosions.

The potential for exposure to threats of emerging and re-emerging diseases

increases with changes in our society and the environment (Donatelle &

Davis, 1999). According to the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases

and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act (RA 11332), the first line

of defense to epidemics and health events of public health concerns are

disease surveillance and response systems. Response to these public health

concerns includes verification, contact tracing, rapid risk assessment, case

measures, treatment of patients, risk communication, conduct of prevention

activities, and rehabilitation.

Mental and Social Health

Mental, emotional, spiritual, and social dimensions of health are integral

parts of your total wellness. Factors such as life experiences, family, the

environment, other people, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and personality

influence your psychosocial health (Donatelle & Davis, 1999). Problems in

this dimension of your well-being should be properly addressed because they

interfere with your daily living (Insel & Roth, 2006). The Mental Health Act

(RA 11036) ensures that people's mental health is valued, promoted, and

protected. The law also recognizes the importance of treatment and

prevention of mental health conditions. Do you think people are giving enough

importance to their mental health?

Information and communications technology play an important role in

efficient delivery and exchange of information. What if this technology is used

by criminals to illegally access vital information or steal other people’s

identity, or commit fraud? What if internet is used to deliver prohibited acts

such as cybersex, child pornography, and unsolicited commercial

communications? Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA 10175) prevents

such and other unlawful acts to happen and make these punishable under

the law.

Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009 (RA 9775) protects the children from

all forms of exploitation and abuse. Specific in RA 9775 is the definition of

Page 23: Guided Learning Activity Kit

21 | Page

Child Pornography which refers to any representation of the child engaged or

involved in real or simulated explicit sexual activities. Child pornography is a

very serious problem. Like any other forms of child abuse, child pornography

causes lifelong psychological consequences especially to the mental health of

the child.

Safety in the Environment

A clean and safe environment greatly contributes to your well-being. Laws

addressing this concern exist to guarantee your right to healthful

environment. The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (RA

9003) for example articulates the policy of the Sate to adopt a systematic,

comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program. Do you

practice waste segregation? How do you help manage solid waste in your

homes? How about in your community?

The Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 (RA 8749) protects your right to

breathe clean air. RA 8749 provides for a comprehensive management

program for air pollution which includes monitoring of air quality and

controlling of sources of air pollutants. Burning garbage introduces particles

into the atmosphere which causes pollution. Can you name some human

activities which may result in emission of air pollutants?

Road accidents result in injuries, damage to properties, and even death. In

the first quarter of 2020, the Department of Health identified alcohol to be the

most reported risk factor for transport/vehicular crashes. It was also

reported that out of 9,176 injured motorcycle riders, 97.2% were not wearing

helmets at the time of the incident. In the cases of injured car occupants,

99.5% were not wearing seatbelt at the time of the incident (Online national

electronic injury surveillance system (oneiss) factsheet, 2020). Driving under

the influence of alcohol, dangerous drugs, and similar substances endangers

the life and properties of people. It also poses threat to public safety. The

Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013 (RA 10586) makes it unlawful

to drive a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or illegal substance.

Aside from RA 10586, there are other laws which intends to safeguard the

people from fatal or life-threatening accidents and crashes. The Seat Belt

Law (RA 8750) for example, requires drivers and passengers of public or

private motor vehicles to wear or use seat belt devices while inside a vehicle

of running engine. The Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 (RA 10054) requires

divers and back riders to wear protective motorcycle helmets while driving at

all times. The Anti-Distracted Driving Act (RA 10913) prohibits drivers from

Page 24: Guided Learning Activity Kit

22 | Page

writing, sending, or reading text-based communications, receive calls, play

games, surf the internet, watch movies, or other similar acts while their motor

vehicle is in motion or temporarily stopped at a red light. Do you think all

drivers know and obey these road safety laws? Can you think of behaviors of

drivers which are not safe?

Activities

Acknowledgment

The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt gratitude

to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to the successful

preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and distribution of the

Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all learning areas across grade

levels as a response to providing the learners with developmentally-appropriate,

contextualized and simplified learning resources with most essential learning

competencies (MELCs)-based activities anchored on the principles of guided learning

and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the writers

and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting their best efforts

to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the implementation of learning

delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully

evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly extending its

financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of these learning resources

for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close coordination with

the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval of the GLAKs and for

their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the learners

the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish the tasks and for

gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would not be

possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to serving our

Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!

The Management Team
