IntroductionSprouts Child Care and Community Center is a sustainable and healthy child care center that encourages mental, emotional, and physical growth from infants through the Kindergarten and community involvement. With the interior at approximatly 50,000 SF, Sprouts has many ways for growth and interaction from its surrounding community.

The Interior:

• Community entryway with different activity areas for parents and their children to interact and explore together

• Indoor playground themed off of Colorado’s playful outdoors

• Six different classrooms designed on stimulating the senses

• After school program area provided for 1st through 6th grade students to encourage both academic and social growth

• A dance and yoga studio for parents and their children to keep happy and healthy bodies

• Spacious business corridor and lounge for the hardworking employees.

Along with discovering what the inside of Sprouts has to offer, the 1.5 acres of exterior design offers just as much versatility and excitement.

LocationSprouts Child Care and Community Center will be located in Boulder, Colorado at the current Mountain View United Methodist Church. In the heart of Boulder, this church is currently surrounded by a senior living facility, an elementary school, a park, and a middle class, residential community.

Boulder has and always will be an up and coming community. This popular city is full of the love of the environment with many outdoor activities year round. Going with the feel of the city and its friendly people, Sprouts will focus on child and community growth through the health and wellness of its surrounding environment.

Mountain View United Methodist Church first became a church in the fall of 1957. Throughout these past fifty-five years, the church has expanded square feet, renovated the interior, and added Mountain View Preschool. Mountain View Preschool was founded seperatly from the church in 1964 and has thrived ever since by seeing thousands of children learn and grow in these past fifty-eight years.

InspirationMy inspiration for this project was based on a preschool I saw in Kolding, Denmark called Bornekulturehuset or “Preschool House”. The interior was unexpected and whimsical with every room entered. This abstract nature feeling intrigued me and made me more curious about designing a space like this. It seemed as if the children were so happy to be there. I wanted to create that. A place of purpose for out future generations and their surrounding community. A space for growing mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Sprouts Child Care and Community Center teaches the ages from 12 months through kindergarten. These young years of life are considered the most valuable for learning and mentally, emotionally, and physically growing. Each age group has a different intellectual learning level and respond to their environments differently. Each space in the newly designed preschool will be custom to fit each type of need for every age group within Sprouts.

The ClientBoulder County Family Child Care Association (BCFCCA) proposed the need for a new child care center within Boulder County that was focused around sustainability, safety, and education through design and the childrens’ learning environment. Between intensive research, site visits, interviews, and strategic planning, Sprouts Child Care and Community Center will meet and exceed BCFCCA’s expectations and will well serve the community and environment in the Boulder County area.

“Sprouting Senses”

Kids at these ages are in their most vital learning stages. Physicall, emotionally, and mentally, they are growing rapidly. The most basic skill they are learning to master are their senses. The environment that surrounds them needs to adhere to their specific needs and ways of learning. Therefore, Sprouts will encourage healthy interaction, exploration, and overall learning through a sustainable foundation that will both aid the children and the community as they grow.

Process

Research

To prepare for this project, a semester was dedicated to purely research. This research included interviews, site visits, surveys, and case studies. This accumulated information only brought me closer to my project because I knew the elements and principles of child care design that I needed to implement.

From visiting different child care centers and preschools within the area, I began to see the difference in the diverse types of philosphies taught at each school. Sprouts Child Care and Community Center will be practicing a mix of learning philosphies such as the Waldrof and Monessori.

Waldrof preschools are typically geared toward the child’s imagination and exploration of their environment. Things like natural play, gardening, and teamwork are all highly emphasized within this philosophy. A Montessori based program consists of understanding the child as an individual with individual needs. Ideas of independence, self esteem, and self discipline.

What is a bioswale? Landscaping areas typically within a parking lot planted with native vegetation that helps remove silt and pollution from water runoff.

What are the benefits? Removes heavy metals and car pollution from our water Reduces thermal pollution Improves water quality

What is the function? The Petting Zoo Farm consists animals in which the children will learn how to feed, treat properly, and collect things like eggs, milk, and fur from the chickens, cows, goats, and alpacas.

Why do we need to compost or recycle? Taking a used product and reusing it in any form reduces the use of new resources, energy, and negative emissions into our environment.

What is the function? Gives the ability to easily have an indoor garden. It is not only beautiful to look at, but it is also an educational tool for the children.

The Treehouse

The Treehouse is an indoor, Colorado-themed playground around 2,500SF. The goal of this space was for kids to have a large area they can play and exercise when the weather is poor. With the different spaces offered in the The Treehouse, the kids are sure to keep their imaginations creating and their minds running.

The Learning PodThe Learning Pod is a child’s classroom based on age group. The goal for the classrooms were to create a warm and an inviting environment that the children would crave to be in. By designing with nature in mind, through the materials we used to the shape of the room itself, the Learning Pods take on this new and exciting classroom feel where the learning seems simple because the encompassing environment is more of a home than a classroom.
