Group raising money to fund improvements

Logan Square folks love their dogs, but owning them in the neighborhood presents challenges.

For all of the area’s green spaces and parks, there is no place specifically designated for pooches to run around,

mingle, play and do the stuff that dogs love to do.

This will all change when the Logan Square

Dog Park reaches fruition. It promises to be a dream for dogs and dog lovers alike.

Located on a diagonal swath of land running along the west side of the Ken-nedy Expressway between Western Av-enue and Artesian Avenue, the fenced-in park will feature separate areas for small and large dogs, two dog-friendly drinking fountains, seat wells where dog owners can rest while pups play, and more.

With more than 8,000 square feet de-voted to canine revelry, it will be among the largest dog parks in Chicago.

The Logan Square Dog Park isn’t just for dogs, however. The park is being designed for general public use, as well. The tree-lined northern area of the park will be a perfect space for picnics, leisurely strolls, events, and other outdoor activities.

A dedicated group of Logan Square residents have made the creation of the dog park their mission.

“The community really came together to get a dog-friendly area,” says Logan Square Dog Park committee member Nicole Dalesandro.

Community involvement touches every phase of the park’s

development. The current site of the park

sat as a vacant lot for more than a decade before residents ap-proached Ald. Rey Colon (35th) and the Chicago Park District

about transforming it into a dog park. The space was already designated for park

use under the Logan Square Open Space Plan, but the com-

munity nudged the plan in doggie directions.

After a series of meetings with the park district, a design for the

area was unveiled. The plan by Skidmore Owings & Merrill also came with a hefty price tag —

half of which must be raised by

the community before construction can begin. TIF money and grant options are being explored, but the commit-tee is taking its case to Logan Square residents.

“We’ve been holding events around the neighborhood to raise funds,” says Dalesandro. “And we’ve had a presence at the farmers market, the Bucktown Arts Festival and other places.”

The committee is making strides in fundraising and awareness — both of which must remain steady to ensure the dog park’s viability moving forward. The park district does not maintain the dog-friendly areas of Chicago parks. The community is charged with the task. Everyone must pitch in, both in terms of manpower and finances, to make sure that the Logan Square Dog Park is a success.

In the meantime, the Logan Square Dog Park is open to the public, albeit in an abbreviated form. Committee mem-bers have cleaned the area of debris and installed a temporary fence.

Though the proposed amenities are not yet in place, dog owners are encouraged to visit the park with their pets, with the hope that the vision for the park’s future will be felt even in its infancy.

An upcoming revital-ization project at the Congress Theater

looks to revive the historic venue’s connec-tion with its neighbors in Logan Square.

Located at 2135 N. Milwaukee Ave., the

87-year-old Congress The-ater wears its age on its sleeve; the Congress’ ball-room-style lobby, adorned with checkerboard floors and high-hanging lamp lights, speaks as much to the theater’s legacy as a traditional Chicago music venue as it does to the period in which the concert hall was last renovated.

Though he hopes to keep the theater’s old-fashioned appeal, Congress owner Eddie Carranza is ready for a change.

Carranza, who has owned the build-ing since 2005, recently announced that the theater was on deck for an improve-ment project that would transform the venue into a “community center for its Logan Square neighborhood and visiting customers.”

In a statement on the theater’s website, Carranza said that he didn’t want the Congress to be “a cookie-cutter fran-chise-type building.”

“I want to give it its own character; this isn’t a strip mall, this is Logan Square,” he said. “We want to grow that indie spirit, not break it up with a bunch of franchises.”

As a music venue, the Congress Theater attracts patrons of all sorts who pack the concert hall to see the popular bands, club DJs and Spanish singing acts that regularly take its the stage. Neighbors of the theater, however, haven’t been so quick to rush in.

In recent months, residents and Ald. Proco “Joe” Moreno (1st) have called out the theater on noise and public distur-bance issues that caused by concertgoers outside of the venue. Carranza has attended several mediation hearings to resolve the complaints.

The improvements, it seems, may be an extension of that effort to mend the theater’s relation-ship with the neigh-borhood.

“This building be-longs to the neighbor-hood, and I’m keenly aware that many of my music shows cater to very specific audiences that aren’t always appreciated or attended by the area residents,” he said a release in late August.

While the technical details of that reno-vation are still a bit unclear, the intention is not: Carranza hopes to enliven the theater’s foot-print by install-ing local

businesses in the ground-floor storefront spaces. Potential uses include a grocer, cafe and a restaurant, each of which is “in the works,” he said.

Among other aims of the project, Car-ranza, who is also currently weighing a bid to purchase the similarly aged Portage Theater, stated that he wants to bring in a candy shop that would feature live culinary demonstrations.

Carranza has not set a timetable for the project, saying only that “ambi-

tious projects like this don’t happen overnight.”

The project will likely require approval from the city’s landmarks commission, as the building was

designated as a historic site since 2002.

Logan Square sings. Music is every-where. Outdoor events on the square, a multitude of show spots ranging

from small bars to massive concert halls, intimate farmers market jams — they all add up to create one of Chicago’s most engaging musical environments.

Records stores are a vi-tal component, as well, and three stores operating in different corners of Logan

Square each put a unique stamp on the local music landscape.

The first thing you’ll notice upon walking into Logan Hardware at 2410 W. Fullerton Ave. is the sound.

Like most record stores, music pumps loudly, but other auditory delights battle the old soul, classic punk or metal jams for air space. Electronic zings, zips, ex-plosions and more. They emanate from a dark room just beyond the cash register.

This is the arcade room. In addition to the hundreds of new,

used, and often rare vinyl records, dis-count CDs, concert posters, music histo-ry books, DVDs and more that are Logan

Hardware specialties, the store features a large selection of vintage arcade games for customers to play — all for free with a store purchase. Knick-knacks priced as low as a quarter are available, making game time easy for anyone.

Owner James Zespy, who lives above the store with his wife and also runs Chicago Independent Distribution from the space, considers the games to be an integral part of the Logan Hardware mission.

“We want to make record shopping fun, not an academic hipster thing,” says Zespy.

“We want to make the store a destina-tion spot,” he adds, “by sharing nostalgia.”

Saki occupies a cavernous space at 3716 W. Fullerton Ave. The size is necessary.

Owned by Patrick Monaghan of Car-rot Top Records and Distribution fame, Saki is more than just a record store — it also serves as a spot to see live music and much more. A moderately sized stage that sits near the rear of the store past rows of vinyl records and CDs is where the magic happens.

“We have … events almost every week-end,” says store manager Adam Hirzel. “Most of the time its in-stores [perfor-mances] or art openings, but we have also done some lectures, workshops, and movie nights. … There’s usually some multimedia art and live music or DJs involved, too.”

Bucket O’ Blood Books and Records, a small, but ambitious store located at 2307 N. Milwaukee Ave., moves in a different direction altogether.

Owner Marc Ruvolo stocks the tight space with a wide array of speculative/sci-fi, horror and fantasy books. Liter-ary fiction, creative non-fiction, popular science and biographies round out the printed selections, but darker, weirder and wilder fare is the shop’s bread-and-butter.

Topping off the goodness is an eclectic selection of new and used punk, metal, and indie rock vinyl albums and CDs.

If Doctor Who, Star Trek, zombies, and classic Misfits are your thing, Bucket O’ Blood will become your second home.

—Phil Morehart

A local agricultural group with a mis-sion to preserve rare apple variet-ies is en route to planting its first

orchard in Logan Square. The Chicago Rarities Orchard Project

(CROP), a non-profit organization “dedi-cated to preserving and popularizing en-

dangered and antique fruits while educating the commu-nity on their importance,” recently unveiled plans to

develop a community apple orchard on a 1-acre lot at the southwest corner of Mil-waukee Avenue and Logan Boulevard.

The orchard, which could see comple-tion as early as next summer, would be home to species such as the Illinois Greening (also known as the Rhode Is-land or June Greening) — a variety that, though now hard to come by, was once common in the region.

“It was one of those important econom-ic varieties in Illinois, and now it’s very rare,” said CROP founder Dave Snyder.

Other varieties expected to have a place

in the orchard are the American Beauty, Gloria Mundy and Hunts Russet apple.

In addition to the orchard, which would run along the southern edge of Milwaukee, draft designs for the site also include a small public plaza and a loading area.

According to CROP’s website, the group has a stock of 60 trees — repre-senting 35 varieties — that will serve as the first round cultivated at the site. Most of the trees are dwarf varieties, which usually grow no higher than six or seven feet high, allowing for more trees to fit on the property.

“It’s sort of a good example of how you can make an orchard in an urban area,” said Snyder.

The group previously had scouted sites in East Garfield Park and Lawndale as poten-tial locations for the orchard, but landed on the Logan Square site through discus-sions with the city, which had been look-

ing to develop the lot as a green space under its land trust program.

The city is also supporting the project through a TIF subsidy that could fall somewhere within the vicinity of $1 million, according to Department of Housing and Economic Development spokesperson Peter Strazzabosco.

Final approval is still pending, as the city is in the process of assessing a traf-fic study for the project. The parcel had previously been intended to be devel-oped as a farmers market venue, per a neighborhood open space plan penned by the city in 2004.

The orchard will also act as a com-munity partner, said Snyder. Fruit from the orchard will be donated to local food pantries and sold to restaurants, the proceeds of which will be used to help

cover operating costs.Snyder said that CROP’s mission

includes a strong interest in commu-nity involvement; the group hopes

to enlist volunteers from area schools, neighborhood groups and anyone else who wants to learn about caring for apples trees.

“We just want to have as many people involved as we can,” he said.

N ancy Kamp finds joy in helping others.

For 25 years, the longtime Logan Square resident worked as a registered nurse. It was a fulfilling job, but she wanted more. She knew that she had a deeper calling — one that would allow

her to serve the neighbor-hood and reconnect with her heritage.

“I had an epiphany one day,” Kamp remembers. “I said to my husband, ‘I’m going to open a little Italian-style grocery store in Logan Store.’”

And she did. After two years of personal research

and professional training at the Women’s Business Development Center, Kamp opened The Half-Italian Grocer, which sits just across the street from the Logan Theater at 2643 North Milwaukee Ave. It’s a modest shop in a modest space. This is by design.

Influenced by the Italian markets on Chicago’s Northwest Side that she visited as a child, her “100-percent Italian” grandmother and small markets encoun-tered on trips to Europe, Kamp sought to create a truly neighborhood grocery store — a quaint, community-minded place with customer service at its core; a place where one could find everyday amenities, fresh meat and produce for the evening supper, or simply items needed in a pinch.

Patrons don’t have to sacrifice quality for convenience, however.

“I try to get the best of everything. The best cheeses, the best olive oils, the best grains. I buy organic and in bulk,” says Kamp. “I want a variety.”

Kamp’s nursing background is an influence, as well. Stocking nutritional fare is a priority.

“I want people to come in and get healthy; to enjoy eating healthy fast food,” says Kamp.

The Half-Italian Grocer is much more than a simple grocery store, though. As its name implies, Italian products are a specialty.

A wide variety of pastas, sauces, olive oils and more stock the shelves. Cap-rese, Proscuitto, Bella, Lagano, Italian and other sandwich varieties are made fresh at the deli counter. An espresso bar churns out caffeinated buzzes.

Sidewalk seating just outside the Milwaukee Avenue entrance where customers can enjoy their sandwiches, coffees, and more adds to the comfort-able, old-world charm.

A visit to the Half-Italian Grocer on a

Saturday afternoon finds the place hop-ping. The small staff is busy behind the deli counter preparing sandwiches and cold cuts, a couple examines the heir-loom tomatoes and folks crowd sidewalk tables eating lunch and talking. The reception makes Kamp proud.

“The people are so good,” she says. “They feel good and at-home when they come here. I’m not sure how I did it, but I did it.”
