Drama has always been a huge part of Italian life. The street is a stage in Italy; it presents the opportunity to create a spectacle at any given moment.
At Carluccio’s, this spirited approach makes us who we are. We’re noisy about food. We taste it, we try it, we argue about it until it’s exactly right. It’s the Italian way – and it’s how we’ve worked since 1991.
For a taste of good food and drama pop into one of our Caffès for a warm Italian welcome.

WELCOMEMichael Frayn is one of Britain’s greatest playwrights and we’re thrilled to be staging a major revival of his razor-sharp comedy Here. This follows Joely Richardson in Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea and is the fifteenth Rose Theatre Production since we opened four years ago.
The Spring is full of other delights too, including the first visit of Bristol’s Tobacco Factory with The Cherry Orchard, Stephen’s own production of The Conquest of the South Pole from the Arcola Theatre in East London and the return of Propeller with Henry V and The Winter’s Tale.
We’re also presenting a wide range of work for children - The Snail and the Whale, Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Let Me In, a short season of work for young people with learning difficulties - as well as the amazing Ring Round The World Olympic Opera Project.
We’re hosting Kingston’s very own International Youth Arts Festival in July and last, but by no means least, we will be showing live coverage of the London 2012 Olympics at the Rose. Please check our website for updates.

WILDLY PASSIONATE AND SURPRISINGLY VICIOUS… AS QUICKSILVER AS THE SEA ITSELF, FULL OF RIPTIDES, SWELLS AND UNDERCURRENTS. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian on The Lady From The Sea
Award-winning film and television actress Joely Richardson makes a welcome return to the London stage for this major revival of Ibsen’s rarely seen masterpiece. This new production is directed by the Rose’s Artistic Director Stephen Unwin, who has been widely hailed for his five productions of Ibsen, including an award-winning Hedda Gabler at the Donmar.
Ellida is married to Dr Wangel, and lives with him and his two daughters. But she feels claustrophobic and restless. Ten years ago she promised herself to another man. On a late summer’s day he comes to claim her.

As the theatrical highlight of its 2012 summer season, the Rose is producing a major revival of Here by Michael Frayn, the multi-award winning playwright and novelist. Michael Frayn is internationally acclaimed for all his plays, including Noises Off, Copenhagen and Benefactors, and is the author of the Booker short-listed Headlong.
Rarely seen on stage, Here is a touching and brilliant razor-sharp comedy about a young couple facing the challenge of organising their new apartment - and their new relationship.
Here is where everything happens. Here and now – in the space around us that we can see and touch. For Phil and Cath, in this one small studio flat, as they begin to construct their life together. For them the whole past history of the universe has led up to this moment, and its whole future history will be determined by what they decide together. Here. Now.
But how to decide anything, when the other person keeps disagreeing? And when the woman downstairs keeps dumping the left-over remains of her own life on you...?
Here will be performed on a new stage, built out into the auditorium bringing the intimacy of Here even closer to the audience.

The cast includes Julia Hills (2 Point 4 Children, Dad, and original cast member of Calendar Girls) who plays the feckless matriarch, Ranevskaya and Simon Armstrong, who starred in the recent SATTF/Bristol Old Vic production of The Misanthrope, who plays Lopakhin.
On Wednesday and Friday evenings, there will be a special post-show performance in the Rose’s Culture Café of Chekhov’s celebrated 15 minute monologue, On The Evils of Tobacco, performed by Paul Brendan. The hen-pecked Nyukhin tries to obey his wife’s command to lecture us on the evils of tobacco but only succeeds in revealing the comic absurdities of his life.

THE CONQUEST OF THE SOUTH POLE
Stephen Unwin’s original production of this play launched the careers of Ewan Bremner and Alan Cumming. Stephen now directs the next generation in the first major revival in the UK of this landmark piece of theatre.
London youth – out of work, on the dole, spending time in their flat, going on epic journeys of the imagination and hoping for the best. Manfred Karge’s The Conquest of the South Pole is a fascinating mix of domestic drama and epic adventure, a 90-minute study of fantasy and dignity which cannot fail to cast its spell over audiences in Kingston.
“Nowhere else are theatrical myths forged so quickly: Tom Stoppard was discovered through Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Manfred Karge’s Conquest of the South Pole appeared during Jenny Killick’s golden age of the Traverse, and Théâtre de Complicité won – of all things – the Perrier award in 1985” Lyn Gardener on Edinburgh’s Traverse original run prior to its Royal Court transfer

THE CRUCIBLEIn Salem Massachusetts, 1692, superstition, paranoia and local jealousies fuel a mass-hysteria of terrifying power and momentum.
Parallels between Salem’s infamous witch-hunt and 1950s McCarthyism have been studied in schools across the world. But the play resonates just as strongly today, in our post-9/11 society of religious fundamentalism and fear.
Miller’s tale is about the dignity of the common man. Set against a backdrop of mindless persecution, this is a thriller, courtroom drama and tender love-story, with humanity and redemption at its heart.
Rose Youth Theatre and Rose Plus Players combine forces to present a sumptuous and exciting version of this classic masterpiece.

ROSE APPEAL
Rose Theatre Productions lie at the heart of what the Rose is all about. Since opening in January 2008, we have presented fourteen productions, and brought to Kingston some of Britain’s greatest actors and actresses.
Without Arts Council funding, however, we rely on the generous philanthropic support of hundreds of individuals. Join the Rose Family and help us stage more productions of a richer and wider range of plays.
We need to raise £250,000 a year to support our productions. Every penny you give will be used on stage.
Stephen Unwin, Artistic Director
