The Yiddish Twist Orchestra is an all-star East End bandfeaturing Europe’s retro king Natty Bo on vocals (Ska Cubano). In the late 50s and early 60s, London was home to ‘der shvitz’, the most deliriously danceablemusic of all – a hallucinating mix of surf rock guitar,West Indian calypso, mambo, skiffle and Jewish folkmelodies. When it crossed the Atlantic in diluted form

as the twist, the music’s roots remained largely forgotten. This one-off cultural collision, paying homageto its beatnik founder Willy Bergman, lost hero of the sex ‘n’ drugs British music revolution, got the slums– and salons – on both sides of the water dancing to the pounding Yiddish beat.

Come and Play: The Gamelan A chance to explore the traditional Indonesian Gamelan with communitymusician Emily Crossland. The University of York’s Gamelan Sekar Petak (theWhite Flower Gamelan) will be in residence at the NCEM for two introductoryworkshop sessions. Participants will find out more about the Javanesegamelan, its surrounding culture, its traditional repertoire, and its place in themodern musical world. The workshops will be hands-on, with opportunities toplay genuine Javanese instruments.

The workshop is aimed at beginner adults and children (aged 11+) and noprior experience is required. Book early to avoid disappointment!

This national award has attracted much interest.The finalists will have the opportunity to workwith composer Christopher Fox and Florilegiumto prepare their pieces for this publicperformance. The winners will be announced onthe night. The winning pieces will then beperformed by Florilegium at the BathInternational Music Festival in June andrecorded for broadcast by BBC Radio 3.

AyannaThe first non-American to win the legendaryAmateur Night Live at the Harlem Apollo, Britishvocalist, cellist and composer, Ayanna – a pioneer of Black folk music – is paving the way with herbeguiling vocals which skip and swing over theintimate, honey-sweet cello.

Ayanna is an emerging composer, arranger,performer of versatility and depth. Reservations: Tickets can be reserved but must be paid for within three working days and at least24 hours prior to the performance.

Concessions: These apply to people aged from 60 years onwards, unemployed, registered disabledand carers. Please note that a limited number of concessions are available for each concert.

Group Bookings: Buy 10 get one free! We welcome group bookings (subject to ticket availability)and ask that all tickets are booked in the same transaction to take advantage of this offer.

Student Tickets: Please note that the student price of £5.00 on selected events is a limited offer sobook early to avoid disappointment.

Student Standby Tickets: Look out for student standby tickets which will be available on the day forselected concerts only. This information will be publicised on our website one week prior to therelevant performances.

Refunds and Exchanges: We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or money refunded except in the event of a cancelled performance.

Gift Vouchers: These can be purchased from the Box Office in amounts of £5 and £10.
