is what you hear everywhere. Both local residents and visitors agree when asked what it’s like in Kaltern am See – also known as Caldaro al Lago, which makes it a place with more than one name and many different faces. // Coming from the north, there really is so much southern flair that hits you right after crossing the Brenner Pass. Still a few spruces, larches and pines but yet also palms. And they’re deep in the soil, not in pots. Cypresses, figs and olive trees. And then the vineyards, which is the last bit of evidence needed to prove: → You’re in the south.

3

First doubts: almost everyone is speaking German, that’s strange. But then, almost mid sentence, isn’t that Italian? And the melody? Southern or Northern? — South Tyrolean? // Then there’s the lake, but hills and mountains too. “Überetscher” style of construction and modern architecture. Red wine and white wine. Grapes and apples. There’s an “and” with everything; there’s always an opposite. // How gorgeous! Kaltern doesn’t have to decide between one and the other, and the guests don’t have to either. → Whoever is looking for the south, finds it; and whoever is looking for the north, finds it, too.

Take a deep breath, turn a new leaf over, slowly now, gently now. Meet the new season with a spring in your step, or run, cycle or even swim towards it.

We’ve impatiently been longing for spring to arrive once again. It some-times struggles in crossing the Brenner Pass and all those mountain ranges in its at-tempt to reach us, and the sun still struggles to break through the cover of those pale, wintry clouds. When the time to say goodbye to winter has come, then that is when we leave our houses to welcome spring. It has made its appearance in Caldaro, perhaps slowly but certainly it is in the air.

Around this time of the year grapevines, apple trees and people all stretch their limbs and leaves to the sky to welcome the warmer sun; they all take a deep breath of fresh air and regain their strength.

Cyclists with stylish bikes, casual e-bikes and elaborate mountain bikes are every-where. They are running through the motions, testing bikes and road conditions, and experiencing the effort of those first kilometres, especially when cycling uphill! Spring temperatures set in at the end of February in Kaltern and Überetsch: the perfect place to welcome the start of the new season at the beginning of March.

A new season for hikers too! We highly recommend the Wine Excursion Day, a motivational group experience, in April. Watch out, because spring also means uncorking the youngest autumn wines. Extensive research into wine has brought about the legendary “Night of the Cellars” in conjunction with the Wine Road weeks. Tourists who know of our own wine, the Kalterersee-Charter, are always keen to at-tend the tasting session called “The Best of Kaltern” in the village square on Tuesday, May 20th. It is accompanied by music and typical dishes.

Spring awakeningIt’s time to leave winter behind and to move on and look to the season and pleasures ahead. Do not delay for time waits for no man! Take a deep breath of the warm South wind, and your spirit will immediately be lifted.

Thanks to its Mediterranean breeze

Kaltern is the special hint for your holiday in

spring. While elsewhere the weather hinders

you from any activity, in Kaltern you can already

get fully into action!

21st – 26th April 2014Wine & PleasureEveryone who comes to Kaltern enjoys pleasure. If you want to know more about it, then a cooking class of the South Tyrolean Wine Academy teaches you how to pair wine to dishes. Enjoy a good bal-ance between all what’s pleasurable within excursions and in the kitchen.

26th April – 3rd May 2014Wine & HikingKaltern lies next to a lake and at the same time rests against the base of an imposing mountain. Every road you take looks like a hiking track, and that’s what they are. The high-light of the week is to meet one of the best known extreme moun-tain climber of our time.

The basis packageIn Kaltern everything revolves around

wine. The same applies to the basic package during these five spring weeks.

On Tuesday enjoy a wine tasting session in the wineries with winemakers.

Sip wines from Kaltern and its surroundings in a relaxed atmosphere.

On Thursday come and listen to the Winery Concerts with many different groups playing.

Finally, on Friday and weekends take part in one of the many courses offered by the

South Tyrolean Wine Academy, whose main office is strategically located in Kaltern.

And to start the weekend in style: let us tempt you with a bubbly, sparkling wine breakfast

in the Kettmeir Winery.

Thematic programmsPersonalize your basic package by choosing the special offers from the proposed thematic programms.

Experience the spring in Kaltern …Celebrate spring in Kaltern in your own way: make it a personal experience.

“Wine & More” makes it possible.

Between 21st April and 24th May 2014, with the warmer spring breeze preluding to summer, experience five extraordinary themed weeks in Kaltern and its surround-ings. The basic holiday package takes centre stage week after week with its events and offers.

Think about it carefully and decide quickly. Once it’s gone it’s gone. At least, for this coming year; then you’ll have to wait until next spring.

To go on holiday means being free and not being obliged to do anything at all (except for perhaps thinking about what to do!). Just enjoy your day and do whatever takes your fancy at the moment. That’s why every package we offer, i.e. the basic and themed ones, can be booked whenever you please, providing there are still places available.

3rd – 10th May 2014Wine & MusicIf you like to sit back, relax, mingle with the locals and enjoy the start of music events this summer, you should choose this week. It includes the season opening concert on the main square and a wine and movie night. Ideal for people who like to combine different types of pleasure: listening to music, eating something tasty and enjoying a good glass of wine.

10th – 17th May 2014Wine & CyclingDuring this week, Wednesday is all about cycling. Cycling is a wonderful way of exploring the village and its surroundings – especially during spring- in a peaceful, yet energetic, way. The “Wine & Cycling” day uniquely combines physical activity and pleasure: cycle from one win-ery to the other stopping at a restaurant or a local guesthouse at your own pace. We work with Karen Eller and her husband Holger Meyer to come up with special cycling offers: the two of them are experts in the mountain bike world.

17th – 24th Mai 2014Wine & the KaltererseeAnd then, of course, we have two Kaltern Lakes! Two? One is the actual, green lake, while the other one is the wine. Both are deeply rooted in the soul of Kaltern: they are at the same time expression and symbol of a lifestyle. Get to know ‘the best in Kaltern’ and study the ‘Kalterersee-Knigge‘, the course for wine etiquette at the Wine Academy. That’s how learning should be done.

Further offers in autumnFor those who want to discover the beauty of Kaltern in autumn there will be chance to do so by participating at the “Wine & Toerggelen“ weeks in October. Sweet grape juice, colorful leaves, warm days, cool nights … autumn in Kaltern is multi-faceted yet one thing leads the way throughout: the wine. In this time of the year everything in the village of Kaltern revolves around wine: from the grape harvest up to the maturation of wine in the cellars. An ongoing process which you can follow step by step, sip by sip. 9

10

Deep, blue water is always extolled. But the → Lake Kaltern is green. The landscape around the lake is green. The air reflects tones of green. Every shade of green, forest green, vine green, field green, reed green … “and there it lies, a mirror of green”. [ A. Komarek, WL 15]

11

LIDO-Swimming PoolArchitects were definitely at work here – the next ENTERprise-architects from Vienna. And the result depicts quality, which is actually the only choice with the landscape at hand. And ever since the new LIDO opened in 2006, it has been source of refreshment for the local residents and visitors to the area, both big and small. Here you’ll find sun and shade, action and rest, sunbathing lawns and wooden decks. There’s a lap pool, a fun pool, a whirlpool and a pool for children. There’s even a mysterious underground grotto. – The LIDO is just one enormous playground.

12

M editerranean flair at LIDO, a new swimming facility with an architectural style that no

one would have ever imagined. Rowing boats, sailing boats, paddle boats and surf boards glide by. Otherwise, it is peaceful; except, for the laugh of child-ren, who are like in paradise.

It’s beautiful in the lake, on the lake and all around the lake. The beach at Lake Kaltern is just a small one, the natural marshland, fruit orchards and vineyards have definitely gained the upper hand here.

And you don’t have to be a birdwat-cher, or a zoologist or botanist. But by the time you get to the observation point on the southern edge of the lake, you’ll

wish you had some binoculars. 250 spe-cies of migratory birds make a stop at Lake Kaltern every year. Other delightful species such as the great crested grebe and the white stork can also be found.

It’s difficult to resist temptation when taking a walk around the lake: apples and grapes are so ripe they make your mouth water. But don’t forget to leave the farmer what is his and just taste with your eyes.

And finally you’ve circled the lake. Now, it’s time for some ice cream and some first thoughts as to which lake restaurant you’d like to try for dinner. With a view out over the lake, of course.

Lake Stage PerformancesAll day long, it’s the beach but in the evening, it’s a grand theater. Year after year, summer evenings at the lake are filled with magical theatrical pro-ductions on the floating stage, including musicals, cabaret, film, and comedy, which compete only with the already fairy tale atmosphere all around Lake Kaltern.

13

14

“Kaltern is one big open-air theater.” [ H. Hochrain, 60] // The people all have totally different personalities, there are no two alike. And this fact is worth studying. The best time is the morning, when your mind is still quite fresh. And the best place is → Kaltern’s main village market square. Just simply observe, with perhaps a cup of espresso, and — slow down the pace a bit.

15

Kaltern,or Caltare, or Chaltar, Chalter, Chaldar, Chal-teren, Caldarum, Caldarium, Kalthari. All refer back to the Latin word caldarum – “copper ket-tle” (thus, Kaltern’s coat of arms). Evidence that a settlement had already been established here at the time of the Romans. 1220 (wine from Kaltern mentioned) and 1273 (Kaltern named as a judicial seat) are the first documented dates; around 1250 there is also reference to Kaltern’s own unit of measure for wine, the “urna di Caldaro”. 1681 is the date documented to show Kaltern was granted the right to hold a market. Some of today’s most important figures:

population (2013) 7.783area 4.796 haof which is fruit orchards 611,44 haof which is vineyards 727,21 ha

16

The image becomes obvious; you see the local farmers coming to sell their goods (farmers’ market on Tuesdays), you see

how crowds of pilgrims mingle and pause while on their search for Kaltern’s saintly ancestors.

Soon there’s an interesting point to ponder: Is this a grape farming village or a wine producing town? And there again: two things at once. With some men confidently wearing their blue farmers’ aprons and others out and about in loafers and cashmere pullovers.

Now it’s time to get a few souvenirs and write a few postcards. The perfect excuse for the next espresso. Buy some useful items and a couple unnecessary

ones, too, just because you feel like it. Before noon, you might even have a glass of white wine, like the locals do.

Then it’s also quite pleasant if you de-cide to stroll along only half of the wine trail, ending midway at the Marktplatz village square. Enjoy some ice cream near the fountain, no, here it’s called gelato. Or perhaps even a cappuccino. But if you want to continue doing as the locals do in the afternoon, then it should be a glass of lightly chilled Kalterersee wine.

Shop, Stroll, Enjoy: In Kaltern there’s so much going onThere’s always something to do, but always in a relaxing atmosphere, whether on the market square or in the quaint side streets. Shopping, even late nights on Thursdays during the months of July and August or on Saturday afternoon in the springtime and in autumn. Naturally, there’s a complete assortment of wine and so much more like concerts – from the traditional to the classic, festivals, wine tasting, open markets. And in between, there are always moments of leisure when you have time for some coffee and ice cream under the sun.

17

18

“Scattered between rock and water,” lay Kaltern’s nine → diverse communities, “there are just a handful of houses around their little neighborhood church, all surrounded by vineyards and apple or-chards.” [ F Birri C. Coco, WL 127] How they ever came to be united is just a wonder, since each of the communities is so uniquely distinct. After all: Kaltern’s → history is the result of a century-old dialogue between man and his landscape, an on going conversation be-tween diverse → cultures.

19

Neighborhood Districts According to Altitude

“Kaltern is one big community with an extreme slope. A place with several storeys, so to speak.” [ H. Hochrain, 34]

St. Josef am See 214 m a.s.l.Markt (village center) 426 m a.s.l.Unterplanitzing 443 m a.s.l.Mitterdorf 480 m a.s.l.Oberplanitzing 510 m a.s.l.St. Anton 525 m a.s.l.Pfuss 530 m a.s.l.St. Nikolaus 565 m a.s.l.Altenburg 620 m a.s.l.

20

Each district has its own special features: St. Anton has the sports complex and the Mendel cable

car station, Altenburg has the Vigilius church with the wall fresco of St. Kum-mernus, Mitterdorf has the Sallegg Cas-tle and the Kampan Castle, St. Josef, the smallest, has the lake.

All of the districts share the same mild climate and the overwhelming variety of plant life. Apart from the fruit orchards, vineyards and the vegetable gardens, there are palms, oleanders and wisterias everywhere; and it’s impossible to miss the rhododendrons and cypresses. There are even real sequoias. — If you’re observant enough as you wander through the neighborhood districts, you’re sure to discover rare and peculiar life forms.

Well, alliances to bishoprics and even nations have certainly changed hands often enough over the centuries. Scores of travellers and pilgrims have passed through this area since it lies on one of the most important north-south tran-sits in Europe. Great historical events, however, have not occurred in Kaltern. Art, literature, world politics — all that happened elsewhere. At the end of the 19th century, Kaltern was on its way to changing its own destiny by creating the infrastructure that would bring tourists up the Mendel Pass via cable cars and paved roads. Prominent names from all over Europe began choosing the Mendel as their summer get-away residence. The imperial couple, Franz Joseph and his wife Elisabeth were often there; Karl May, renowned German author, and Nobel prize winner Wilhelm C. Röntgen vacationed there. Even the iconic pacifist Mahatma Gandhi came to the Mendel to enjoy the fresh mountain air.

History and culture always and eve-rywhere. Nearly every house in Kaltern has a story; just look at the house facade: namely the Überetscher Baustil. And when you’re standing in front of one of the older houses, you don’t even need a lot of imagination to feel the deep history.

Architecture Past and Present„In Kaltern, everything is oblique”, thinks Helmut Hochrain [ H. Hochrain, 28]. It could be true. And if you want to investigate that further, you might want to pick up two little brochures that provide information on both historical and modern architecture in Kaltern. Over 80 buildings are described and walking trails help you on your search. What began with the so-called „Über-etscher Baustil“ in the 16th century that com-bined both northern and romantic elements, has now found its sequel in the numerous con-temporary constructions in Kaltern – many of which have caused much international atten-tion over the past few years. Both brochure are available in the Tourist Office Kaltern.

Fruit OrchardsNearly every tenth apple consumed in Europe comes from South Tyrol. In Kaltern alone, roughly 30.000 apples are harvested each year. For this reason, fruit cultivation is the second most important agricultural contribution in South Tyrol, just behind wine production. Apple harvest runs from mid August until November. With 611.44 hectares of apple orchards, the yield/hectare is approximately 50.000 kg.

21

22

“No question about it: Mother Nature is quite impressive. There’s a permanent

show playing; just one big nature hit parade.” [ H. Hochrain, 19]

23

“Kaltern, my dear, has something strangely remarkable about it. The fact that it’s so unique and unrepeatable keeps the others from being able to imitate it.” [ Franzobel, WL 31]

24

“My dear, it’s all so easy, you only have a few diffi-culties the first two hundred years”, Baroness Roth-schild’s extremely terse answer when questioned on how to make good wine. [ F. Birri, C. Coco, WL 130] Good that they’ve been making → wine in Kaltern for so many hundreds of years. And that’s left its mark everywhere. Even in the → village kitchens.

25

Cuisine in KalternWine whets the appetite; and like most everything in Kaltern, the local kitchen unites the north and south. Dishes with all types of Knödel dump-lings – whether with speck, cheese, or spinach – Schlutzkrapfen or polenta with goulash, all origi-nate from more rustic traditions. And then there is the fresh fish from the lake – pike, char, gray-ling, trout, and carp. Or how about an exotic dish of wild game? Here, it‘s a back and forth from the traditional to the Mediterranean. Local menus feature dishes and specialties that combine the best of both worlds!

Kalterersee-CharterThe seal of quality, allocated on the bottle neck of the selected wines, represent the premium quality of the Kalterersee-wines.

26

If wine “is the soul of Kaltern” [ L. Bellini,

WL 125], then it is also true that, “ ‘The only way to discover its soul,

is to leave any prejudice behind and visit every single winemaker, large establish-ments, cooperative wineries and small wine cellars. Listen to the winemakers and take a stroll through the vineyards.’ as the late Veronelli used to say.” [ F. Birri,

C. Coco, WL 131]. In other words, go for a walk, have a

look, listen. But first, maybe, you should learn how to taste wine. In Kaltern, history more often than not also means wine history. The turn of the century brought with it a new beginning for wine produced in Kaltern, namely the initiative wein.kaltern. Leading estab-lishments in Kaltern – wineries, wine shops, hotels and restaurants – support this project and various measures which have led to the start of a quality-centred campaign revolving around wine, and they have been developing it ever since.

Locals have by now grown accustomed to the red dot (●), symbol for wein.kaltern; participating companies consider it a welcome breath of fresh air which makes them stand out; to guests it represents proof of outstanding quality. The initia-tive focusses especially on Kalterersee and on continuously improving quality standards in the area. The wine of the prestigious Kalterersee -Charter adopts strict quality criteria which, as a conse-quence, determine its uniqueness, the location, the vine and how it is harvested, as well as the rate of expansion of the vineyards, the launch of sales and the procedure to follow in order to obtain a quality seal. In the past, critics of this wine made fun of it, saying it was just a marginal supermarket variety; now, this local wine has finally proven what it is worth. Fruity, fresh and unmistake-able – this is our Kalterersee.

The South Tyrolean Wine RoadThe South Tyrolean Wine Road is by no means merely just a road connecting a few well-known, and lesser-known, places: Andrian, Auer, Bozen, Branzoll, Eppan, Kaltern, Kurtatsch, Kurtinig, Margreid, Montan, Nals, Neumarkt, Pfatten, Salurn, Terlan and Tramin. Oh, how much there is to discover just off the beaten path!

Wine MuseumThe South Tyrolean Wine Museum is located in Kaltern – what an honor for our little wine village, and we warmly invite all wine lovers to come in and learn a little more about the amazing history of wine making in South Tyrol.

Celebrating WineTörggelen – got its name from traditional harvest wine tasting around the “Torggl” (wine press). Where everyone comes together to taste the newly pressed wine — and celebrate! Traditionally, simple foods are served at Törggelen: home-cured Speck and Kaminwurz sausages along with simple home-cooked, traditional specialties and for des-sert, roasted chestnuts and sweet fritters.

27

Everyone has his or her own unique speed. Some enjoy walking while others must run; and then there is another group that just loves → biking. There are just so many means of reaching the same goal. And there are certainly enough trails through the valleys and mountains to satisfy every enthusiast. For those who love the game of → golf, there are some lovely courses nestled gently in the middle of mountains and hillsides.

29

Up and downIt’s true, you can practically bike anywhere – but for sure, there’s not a more beautiful biking area than Kaltern. Of course, many people visit Kaltern for a wide variety of reasons, but now that you’re here: Hit the road, explore, and dis-cover! And another important fact: Winter in the Überetsch area ends early, therefore, the biking season starts in April and runs until November. Be especially attentive of the KALTERN bike sym-bol, which points out the way to all bike friendly businesses that offer an array of special services for all cycling enthusiasts!

Oh it’s a wonderful thing for travelers even charming… Tra-vel must be, or to get behind

anything. [Voltaire] Biking is a very special form of travel. Actually, we are not really talking about traditional “bike riding” here, but rather strenuous daily tours of 2,000 meter altitudes up the mountains or 200 km distances along the river sys-tems. Regardless of your style, every bike enthusiast who comes to Kaltern simply loves exploring the area on two wheels.

In the last few years, a great effort has been made to make South Tyrol espe-cially attractive to cyclists. And naturally, Kaltern has been leading the way: A ‘Kaltern Bike Guide book’ (available in German language at the Tourism Office Kaltern) summarizes the most beautiful destinations, with 21 tracks, from easy to ambitious ones; many hotels and inns offer specials designed uniquely for cyclists; also you find new generation e-bikes for rent at the Tourist Office Kaltern. Now cycling is a viable option

for everyone, with the help of these new electric bicycles. Pleasure and movement go hand in hand in Kaltern. No matter what type of cyclist you are, being out and about on two wheels in Kaltern is a majestic experience because you are surrounded by unforgettable landscapes. And after a bike trip, be sure to let us spoil you with some of our culinary specialties: In the village square you can enjoy a cup of cappuccino, some deli-cious ice cream, or a glass of the local wine under the tranquil rays of the after-noon sun …

And those golfers are so calm. Known for walking hours upon hours out in the fresh air, a true golfer is completely relaxed when highly concentrated at the tee-off. Beautiful landscapes are vital to golfers and our mountain golf courses have everything you could ever desire. And then, just like the cyclists, the golfers can be found gathered around a table, enjoying the rest of the evening at the end of an incredible day.

GolfJust 30 minutes and a few curves till you’re at the Dolomiti Golf Club in Sarnonico, located in the neighboring province of Trentino. This 18 hole course lies on a high plateau at 900 meters. The unique feature of the course is the individuality of each hole. Depending on your location, you can view spectacular mountains, deep valleys and picturesque villages. Be sure to ask for a 20 % discount on green fees; additional courses are in Lana, Karerpass and Petersberg.

32

Now, that you’re on vacation you shouldn’t have any trouble thinking of things to do during the day. — Just take it easy and literally, enjoy your → free time! “I left my luggage behind and took to the road …” [ K. Lanthaler, WL 53] So you’ll have something to talk about back home, get going. → Activity is the order of the day ! Or, if not: → active idleness. To each his own.

33

The Mendel Cable Car64% inclination, so you hope the technology is dependable. And to your relief: the design and construction comes from Swiss engineer, Emil Strub. Opened in 1903, the Mendelbahn is regarded as the first electric powered cable car in Tyrol and is the steepest and longest continuous cable car in Europe. A trip up the Mendel moun-tain is already an adventure in itself. And then, there’s the impressive panorama of the Etsch river valley and the South Tyrolean Unterland! // Technical data: course length: 2.37 kilometers, travel time: 12 minutes, altitude variance: 850 meters. The Mendel mountain is ideal for hiking. A map of trails is available in the Tourist Office Kaltern.

34

H iking trails, detours. All around the lake, there are chances to take a rare moment of contem-

plative silence to observe the birds; or on a hot summer day, visit the ice caves in Oberplanitzing. And how appropriate it would be to take a walk on the Path of Peace, leading from St. Anton to Altenburg, where you’ll discover the old church ruins of St. Peter – probably the oldest church ruins in all of Tyrol. You can hike short or long distances, strenuous or relaxing trails, Nordic or traditional. In any case, just long enough until you’ve rediscovered a tiny bit of yourself again.

Or you can step it up a bit and head out to the sports complex in St. Anton, where there’s tennis, bocce, badminton and football (soccer); and the conditions are so ideal that professional teams come here year after year for their off-season training camps. Actually, you can practice almost any sport around here. And there are not any excuses, even in winter, because the closest skiing slopes are only a half hour drive from here.

What’s left? Well, since Kaltern has its own lake, the “Kalterer See”, there are endless possibilities of all water sports. But we’ve already raved about that …

The RastenbachklammApproaching the Rastenbach gorge, on your way down from Altenburg to Lake Kaltern, it suddenly gets really cool and dark. Your steps become more cautious, as if you’re being careful not to disturb the peace. Silently, you look around and enjoy the wonderfully refreshing ambiance. How reassuring to know that the wooden stairs and bridges are reinforced and properly secured. When you get to the bottom of the trail, you are welcomed by a sunny field and Lake Kaltern.

And what if it rains?First of all, it rarely rains; and sec-

ondly, if it does, you should be happy. Taking a walk in the rain is a splen-

did thing. Finally, it’s your chance to visit the wine cellars and take part in

some wine tasting – discerning the differences, drop by drop …

35

HikingHikingWalking paths meander through the village, out into the vineyards, down to the lake, out to the various village com-munities and up to the massive Mendel mountaintop. Here, we have the ab-solute best prerequisites for hiking. The tourism office offers an extensive weekly program for every type of hiking tour. There are casual walking tours along the wine trail, Path of Peace or out to the bee colony; and if you want a more challenging day-long tour, join our guide through the majestic Rastenbachklamm gorge.

Nature Adventure Trail

Lake Kaltern is a first-class natural paradise. All around an extremely pleasant and unmistakable cultural landscape has been created. On the south side of the lake you can experience nature in its absolute purest form. The biotope there offers a per-sonal experience of wetland life.

→ approximately 1.5 hours to walk the circular trail around the lake.

Ice cavesThese ice caves are located deep in a forest not far from the Oberplanitzing community. The caves are a rare natu-ral phenomenon that can be explained by the physical principle of wind pipes, whereby air streams down through cracks in the porphyry stone and creates a system of windpipes which cools the air as it descends. The heavier, cold air mass collects in a 5 meter high pool in the depression. This climate is ideal for plants that would normally thrive at higher alpine regions.

→ Hiking tour Oberplanitzing – Ice caves, Tour n. 15, walking time approx. 1,5 hours

SpiritualThe Path of Peace

The Friedensweg Peace Path, which leads from Kaltern to St. Peter in Alten-burg, was developed from 1995 to 2000 in a joint project of the Maria Himmel-fahrt Parish, Project Tau and the village municipality of Kaltern. It meanders from St. Anton through the Rastenbach gorge to the church ruins of St. Peter in Altenburg. Along the way, artists have created five sculptures that serve as points of reflection. The sculptures represent the themes of Moderation, Wisdom, Justice, Faith and Hope. The Rastenbach gorge represents Courage and the St. Peter church ruins represent Love.

SportsSporting Events On your mark, get set, … go!!! The South Tyrolean Sparkasse Running Association is organizing the Kalterer See Half-Marathon. The unique land-scape and the varied course, which winds through apple orchards and vineyards, is a fun challenge for any amateur runner.

International Kalterer See Triathlon

It is now a tradition in Kaltern for numerous national and international world-class athletes to meet at the lake for the International Kalterersee Tri-athlon. Every year, the overwhelming distances are of Olympic proportions: 1.5 km swimming, 40.8 km cycling, 10 km running. And it is certainly worth a visit to Kaltern so that you can observe this first-rate event in person.

Kalterer Plent

Polenta corn was grown in the Überetsch area of South Tyrol for over 300 years until the land was converted to fruit orchards. Today, wein.kaltern businesses are selling a limited supply of authentic homegrown “Kalterer Plent” – the perfect accompaniment to a refreshing glass of Kalterersee wine.

→ Available at wein.kaltern partner businesses and in the Tourism Office Kaltern.

Expert Wine TastingKellerei Kaltern and the Erste+Neue alternate in offering expertly lead wine tasting events and seminars. In the spring, an additional attraction after the event is a guided tour through Kaltern’s vineyards and wine cellars with more local wine tasting.

The “Kalterersee-Charter”

“We, the partner member businesses of wein.kaltern, are firmly committed to bottling our very best Kalterersee wines under the seal of quality of the Kalterersee-Charter and we faithfully promise to uphold and pursue the

standards and expectations, which have been established to ensure the quality and image of the Kalterersee. For us, the Kalterersee is a modern, regionally typical, and distinctly unique red wine.” — Kalterersee wines, pro-duced under the stringent guidelines of the Kalterersee Charter, are easily identifiable by the capsule and are stamped with the quality seal of origi- nality and approval. Every year, a se-lected jury of experts carefully evalu-ates the wines in a blind taste test to ensure they meet the established qual-ity criteria. Some pass, and some don’t; and all decisions are final.

Culture & History

“Old” and “New” Architecture

Both historic and modern buildings are found tastefully situated side by side in the village; there’s a real architectural consciousness that is present in Kaltern am See. Architecture has been a conver-sation piece in the village now for quite some time and the overwhelming con-sensus seems to be that the “old” must be well cared for and the “new” should be fostered and promoted. What began with the 16th century “Überetscher Baustil” – found predominantly in the village center – is now being contin-ued in the numerous contemporary buildings in Kaltern. Two brochures,

“Historical Buildings in Kaltern” and “Contemporary Buildings in Kaltern” offer suggestions on architectural tours of the village that will take you past 60 noteworthy historical buildings in the village and newer constructions (such as the Manincor wine estate, the “Zum lustigen Krokodil” bar, the PUNKT winehouse, Kellerei Kaltern’s wine-center and the LIDO swimming estab-lishment).

→ Both brochures are available at the Tourism Office Kaltern.

The Mendel Cable Car

Since its opening in 1903, the Mendel cable car has connected the valley sta-tion in St. Anton with the biking para-dise of the Mendel Pass. Technical data: 2.37 km distance, 12 min. traveling time, 850 m. altitude variance.

“Repeat offenders” So many of our guests just can’t stay away; in fact, every year, holiday vacationers inevitably return to the Überetsch area. Now we offer the new Kaltern Card, which is intended for guests who have been coming back for at least ten years. The card offers nu-merous advantages and discounts for things like weekly events, biking acces-sories, and much more. And one thing’s for sure, we’re always thrilled when we see a few familiar faces.

Old and New Buildings in KalternWine has always influenced the archi-tecture of our village. Two brochures provide some background knowledge to the historical and contemporary architectural designs in Kaltern. In fact, there is so much to learn about both the beautiful, historical con-structions built in the “Überetscher Stil” and the modern, architectural wonders of more recent times.
