With Fire Station #3 nearing the end of construction, the El
Centro Fire Department hired four trainees last month.
The firefighter trainee program is an in-house apprentice
program that begins with an intense six week fire academy
consisting of classroom and drill ground instruction.
Firefighter trainees are exposed to basic firefighting tactics
and strategies, department rules & regulations, standard
operating procedures, and overall expectations. Each day
they receive heavy homework assignments and are tested
on the previous day’s assignments. The passing score on all
quizzes and tests is 80%. The classroom session is
reinforced with intense hands-on training. The firefighter
trainees are also tested physically, every week. They must
complete the physical abilities course, building-up to
running in full personal protective equipment while
wearing and breathing through the self contained
breathing apparatus. After successfully completing the six
week fire academy, the probationary firefighters will
continue their instruction and be assigned, as trainees to a
regular work shift. Welcome to the City of El Centro team!
