In the Classroom: Featuring…

From the library:

Mrs. Mills had 3 baby kittens that she brought in to share with the students. Miss Nell brought her Grade 1 & 2 class in to discuss kittens and their life cycle. Each child had a chance to hold and pet the kittens. Thanks to everyone for a fabulous year in the library. Keep on reading through the summer and see you all next school year.

PAA- Mrs. Harvey

It has been a busy year in PAA/Home EC. In semester one, grades 7 and 9 learned some basic sewing skills. For projects they made hand sewn mice and a set of chair pockets for the Grade 1-2 classroom.

A number of these students used spare time to produce a dozen fleece baby blankets which were donated to KidsFirst in Yorkton. KidsFirst is a program designed to support children and families by enhancing parenting knowledge, providing support and building on family strengths.

In semester 2, grades 8 and 10 focused on some cooking skills. Besides learning about food additives and current food issues, they tried their hand at making yeast breads and learned the basics of food preservation. A few gardening basics rounded off the year as they started plants from seeds, cuttings, bulbs and rhizomes. The students did some clean up in the school court yard so that their newly started plants would have a home.

Office 365 Offer for Students South East Cornerstone Public School division is pleased to be able to offer, free of charge, Office 365 to all students and staff. With Office 365, Microsoft’s cloud-based version of Office, your child will now have access to the latest version of Word, for writing; Excel, for spreadsheets; PowerPoint, for presentations; OneNote, for organization and note taking, and much more.

• Install on up to 5 compatible PCs and Macs, plus 5 tablets (including iPad!) • Use with OneDrive for automatic device syncing • Gain valuable skills on the world’s most popular productivity software • Create, edit, and share documents anytime, anywhere • Office subscription lasts for as long as your child is a student here and the program continues

What is the “cloud”? Do you visit Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram? Do you use Gmail, Hotmail, or other web-based email? Do you store your photos in Apple’s iCloud? Have you ever created a Google Doc? Uploaded a video to YouTube? Chatted with family and friends using Skype? Tweeted a tweet? If so, you’ve been in the cloud.

Any time you store files to the web or use a computer application not installed on your computer or mobile device, you are likely working in the cloud. If you can grab these files or use these programs from anywhere on almost any device - on a school laptop, your home computer, your smartphone, iPad, or Android tablet - you’re in the cloud.

The “cloud” describes many web-based computer services that are not provided by software installed on your local computer. Cloud-computing lets you use programs and access these files from anywhere, on any Internet-connected device, without having to install the programs on your own computer.

What is Office 365 and Office for Education? Office 365 is Microsoft’s cloud-based, subscription service for Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, OneDrive file storage, and Outlook email. Students can create, edit and collaborate directly online with the web versions of the software or when offline by downloading the fully-featured versions on up to 5 PC or Mac computers at home. Add in an additional 5 downloads for tablets and mobile devices, including smartphones and iPads. Working offline, all files will automatically sync once online again, and all work will be the same at both school and at home.

We are now able to offer this subscription service to all students for absolutely no cost, for as long as your child attends any school in our school division and as long as the program continues. Many school divisions across our province and across Canada have now moved students to the cloud, either through Office for Education or Google for Education, because of the many advantages these programs provide.

How will this help my child? In the past software always had to be installed on individual computers. Without Office installed at home, students writing an essay at school might be out of luck if they needed to work on it at home. A photo needed to finish a PowerPoint presentation for class stored only on the school computers? Unfortunately that photo can’t be grabbed while working from at home – unless it can be grabbed online from their OneDrive. Working with a partner on that PowerPoint? Collaborating together on the same presentation file at the same time is possible only with the cloud.

Add in OneNote, a powerful organization and note-taking tool. Students can keep all of their work and class notes and materials for the entire school year in a single virtual notebook. Look for teachers to start using the advantages of OneNote in fall to post class notes and distribute and collect assignments.

With Office 365, you’ll always have the latest version of the Office suite of programs, offering your child anywhere, anytime access to their school work.

Why do I need to give my consent? South East Cornerstone Public School Division takes its responsibilities toward the protection of student privacy very seriously. In accordance with with the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (LAFOIP), Section 28(2)(a), only student name and school name are provided to Microsoft Education, solely for the purposes of enrolling students into the Office 365 for Education program. All data will be stored on secured servers in the United States and therefore, will be subject to the USA Patriot Act which provides the government of the United States with the authority to access personal records for the purpose of anti-terrorism investigations.

Microsoft is committed to end user privacy and data security. “Customer Data will be used only to provide customer the Online Services including purposes compatible with providing those services. Microsoft will not use Customer Data or derive information from it for any advertising or similar commercial purposes. “Customer Data” means all data, including all text, sound, video, or image files, and software, that are provided to Microsoft by, or on behalf of, you or your end users through use of the Online Service.” Additional information regarding Microsoft privacy and security information is available online at the Office 365 Trust Center (http://trust.office365.com/).

What if I don’t sign the consent form? Parents and Guardians who choose not to provide consent will not hamper your child’s ability to complete school work and be successful in school. Students without parental/guardian consent will be excluded from the Office 365 program. Because of the benefits that the Microsoft Education student plan provides to your child, we encourage families to participate in this offer.

I have more questions about this offer. Who should I talk to? We are happy to answer any additional questions or concerns that you may have about this program. Please do not hesitate to contact the Coordinator of Instructional Technology, Peggy Lawson ([email protected]; 306.848.4780).
