They’ll appreciate the water and shelter you provide, but what will really bring them back year after year will be the quality and variety of the food they find in your backyard. Their favorites Seed and suet are staples, and birds will reward you for serving them by flock- ing to your outdoor oasis. Keep in mind, suet is not just for winter anymore. No-melt formulas make it the perfect protein for warm-weather feeding too. But if you really want to wow birds, serve meal- worms. And not only are mealworms delectable to your feathered friends, they’re an important source of much-needed nutrition during a season that is vital to birds’ survival. Spring and summer Warm months are cru- cial for backyard birds. Their long migration north can leave them fatigued, stressed and depleted. Then as soon as they arrive in their spring and sum- mer habitat, they must begin the arduous process of finding a mate, staking out their territory, build- ing a nest and raising their young - all while hunting for food. And they have just a few short months to raise their young before it’s time to migrate again in anticipation of cold weath- er. Add in some succulent suet and you have the makings of a dining dream for backyard birds. Now push it over the top by adding dried meal- worms to the birdie buffet. Mealworms High in protein, fat and potassium, mealworms help birds maintain energy. They’re favorites for spe- cies like bluebirds, flickers, woodpeckers, nuthatch- es, siskins and chicka- dees, and are a perfect food source for newborn nest- lings. However, it can be much harder for humans to see the appeal; after all, we don’t usually seek out the company of grubs and larvae. And handling live mealworms is probably not a welcomed bird-feed- ing experience even for the most committed bird en- thusiasts. Freeze-dried treats In the past, it was diffi- cult for bird fans to provide a supply of mealworms for their feathered friends. But freeze-dried varieties, like Cole’s Dried Mealworms have made it easy to serve this nutritious, much- loved treat year round. Freeze-dried mealworms provide all the nutritional benefits of fresh ones and are easy to store and serve. It’s also a great way to serve birds something they love without having to endure the “ick factor” of live mealworms. Feeders A variety of feeders are specifically made for serv- ing mealworms, or you can blend with your seed mix- es and add to any feeder. Either way, the birds will benefit from the nutri- tional value of these high protein-packed treats and you’ll satisfy their craving, keeping them coming back for more. With a little preparation and the right blend of food, water and shelter, you can fill your backyard with the bright colors and wel- come song of birds all sea- son - and give your feath- ered friends the help they need to thrive throughout the year. If birds arrive at a well-stocked and well- prepared backyard, they will not only stay for the summer, but probably re- turn the following spring. For years, homeowners considered railing the icing on the cake when consid-ering a deck - it was nice to have, but not essential.

Those same homeown-ers are now realizing that finishing their decks with a complementary railing sys-tem can provide the added safety and beauty needed to truly capitalize on their in-vestment.

While the deck is the foundation of any outdoor living space, adding rail-ing can dramatically change the look of that space. Style and placement of railing can make the space appear open or closed and polished or rustic. Railing can be in-stalled in colors to match, offset or complement the existing deck or porch.

“Over time, consumers have seen the more finished look that railing provides and responded accordingly,” says Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and mar-keting for TAMKO Building Products. “We’ve seen sig-nificant increases in our an-nual railing sales and had to

step up production to meet the customer demand for these products.”

Installing a railing system is a great option for home-owners who have already in-vested in a deck and want to continue adding to the value of their home with a small remodeling project.

Railing projects provide a big “bang for your buck” by carrying a smaller price tag than a full deck or other larger remodeling projects. And many new railing sys-tems are designed for do-it-yourselfers and contractors with prepackaged kits and pre-routed pieces.

Composite railings are gaining popularity because some products are strong enough on their own that they do not require metal reinforcements. Tam-Rail Composite Railing is an ex-ample of this type of mate-rial. The railing is made with a patented three-layer tech-nology that encloses a blend of foamed wood composite material between two lay-ers of PVC. The resulting system is so thick, stiff and

rigid that it doesn’t require metal reinforcement to meet building codes. Despite this three-layer strength, the product is still lightweight and low-maintenance.

“Composite railing, in particular, is now seen as an attractive building product that performs well at an ap-pealing price,” McNally says.

Some of the benefits of composite railing systems like Tam-Rail are hidden fasteners, a wide variety of railing lengths, fixed-angle bracket adapters, stair kits and the ability to install the post mounts in concrete, wood or composite decks.

Whether adding railing to a porch or a deck as a do-it-yourself weekend project or a professional contract-ing job, installing railing will add instant style and impact to your home at a reasonable price.

Gardening is rapidly be-coming a popular hobby for many Americans, even with an increase in the number of people living in apartments and condos. Getting your hands dirty may seem chal-lenging when faced with a small space, but all the space necessary to have a success-ful garden is a window, ledge, patio or balcony.

Bountiful produce crops can be found in all sorts of places aside from farms or the mar-ket. Fresh herbs and vine-rip-ened tomatoes can easily be grown in a home or on a patio. Simply find a sunny spot and get growing.

Getting started on a person-al container garden:

Location: The first step to growing fresh produce is eval-uating the available space and light. A patio, balcony or porch is an ideal place for containers and hanging baskets. Lacking an outdoor space means more creative solutions. Consider some smaller pots, a window box or hanging baskets placed near a sunny window.

Containers: Choosing a container for a garden is a lot of fun. There are really no conventional ideas of what gardens should look like. A personalized garden is an ex-cellent way to express cre-ativity, and virtually any con-tainer with adequate drainage can become a garden. Today it is easy to find an assortment of pots in varying sizes and shapes made from terra cotta, ceramic, concrete, wood or even recycled milk jugs. Ad-ditional non-traditional op-tions include mixing bowls, tool boxes, 5 gallon pails, dis-carded sinks, straw bales and the Miracle-Gro Gro-Bag. This bag is a great new prod-uct that features durable packaging which acts as the container. Everything need-ed to plant a small garden is already in the bag. Just peel

off the label and place seeds or plants in the three plant-ing areas provided.

What to grow: Once the perfect space and container for a garden are located, it’s time to decide what to grow. Herbs for cooking, tomatoes, salad greens and peppers are great choices for a container garden. Consider eggplants, green onions, cucumbers and strawberries for some-thing new. If produce isn’t preferred, try growing annu-als, perennials or even citrus in containers for a burst of color and a splash of green.

Seeds or plants: Good options for starting veggies indoors by seed are toma-toes, peppers, celery, cauli-fl ower, head lettuce and egg-plant. Produce that can be started either indoors or out are beans, peas, most lettuce and corn. To save time, nurs-eries and garden centers car-ry a wide variety of herbs and vegetables for transplanting as well. Make sure to select short, stocky plants that are not in bloom yet. These will be able to devote more ener-

gy to root development, en-suring a healthier start.

Planting: Begin with a clean, well-drained con-tainer in a location that re-ceives six to eight hours of sun each day. Place a coffee fi lter, small piece of screen or some loose pebbles over the drainage hole to ensure ad-equate water drainage, and to prevent soil from washing out the bottom. Next, add a high-quality potting mix that contains plant food such

as Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix or Mira-cle-Gro Organic Choice Pot-ting Mix. Pop in seedlings or plants, making sure to loosen up any roots that appear to be restricted or curled up around the bottom of the starter con-tainer. Dig out a small area in the pot for each plant being sure to leave enough room be-

tween to allow for growth. A 24-inch pot can hold one to-mato plant in the middle and a few herbs or greens around the edge. To cut down on the amount of watering, hide soil and add organic mat-ter to pots; don’t forget to add a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch to the top of the pots - even in-doors. Scotts Nature Scapes

Advanced Mulch is an excel-lent choice because it comes in a variety of colors.

Maintenance: Once a con-tainer garden is planted, water thoroughly until some seeps out of the drainage hole in the bottom of the pot. Con-tainers dry out more quickly than in-ground gardens, and will require watering daily or even twice a day when it’s very warm. Follow up with regu-lar feedings by using Miracle-Gro Watering Can Singles All Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food. Just pour one pre-mea-sured packet into a watering can and mix with a gallon of water every one to two weeks to keep plants nourished.

Large spaces are not essen-tial in growing delicious veg-etables for dinner or salads. With a minimal investment and some simple steps, spac-es like patios, balconies and porches can be transformed into incredible, edible gar-dens.

Spring Home inSide & out

As the weather warms and the days grow longer, who doesn’t happily an-ticipate opening windows and doors to let the fresh air in? And once we think about bringing the out-doors in, our imagination naturally goes the other way, as well - bringing the indoors out. It seems that our love affair with back-yard entertaining heats up around this time every year. Whether it’s a quiet family meal under the stars or a backyard barbecue for dozens, the appeal of out-door living is undeniable.

Home improvement ex-pert Leslie Segrete says: “ Yo u r o u td o o r s p a c e doesn’t have to be un-comfortable just because your favorite couch isn’t there. With an expanded selection of outdoor piec-es available now - and at all price points - it’s eas-ier than ever to set up a charming space that can serve as the perfect back-drop for small family gath-erings or the big neighbor-hood bash.”

Segrete offers some ad-vice on how to create a beautiful, functional - and most importantly afford-

able - outdoor room no matter what your color scheme, whether it’s ap-ple green, citrus orange or other hot colors of the moment. With just a little work, your outdoor area will be the family’s favorite gathering spot from spring through fall.

1. Start with the basics. The hot trend right now

is to make your outdoor space as put together as your indoor living spac-es. Kmart’s Country Liv-ing collection offers a large selection of beautiful and versatile patio furni-ture at an incredible value that will enable anyone to transform whatever space they have into an invit-ing outdoor living area. Whether it’s upholstered cushions, a fast-drying sling chair, items made from resin, aluminum or steel, there is something available to suit every taste and every budget. And with the coordinated sets that are readily available, one doesn’t have to be an interior designer to put together a beautifully de-signed space.

2. Follow the same de-sign rules you use in your home.

Look for big items (such as sofa and chairs) in a neutral palette and add a pop of color with ac-cessories. For example, cushions can provide a welcome splash of color, as well as make the space more comfortable and in-viting. Just as it is in in-door spaces, lighting your outdoor space is key: Add a lighted chandelier or string a few party lights to illuminate the area. An outdoor fire pit can pro-vide heating and light at the same time; it’s a per-fect addition for when the evenings are still cool.

3. Consider how the space will be used.

If your entertaining will be primarily adult-cen-tric dinners and gather-ings, you can decorate your space in a more pol-ished way. If, however, your shindigs will be kid-friendly family affairs, a more rugged, irreverent vibe (with all unbreak-able accessories) may be the way to go. For small-er areas, Kmart’s bis-

tro set would be ideal, and there are furniture sets that would be per-fect for a larger dining area, a bar setup or sim-ply a comfortable seating area. For music, find one of the many portable iPod speakers on the market - these can be whimsi-cal and fun or smart and chic, whichever match-es the tone you’ve set in your space.

4. Don’t be afraid to use design in your land-scaping.

For an outdoor space, landscaping is a fantastic way to expand your color palette. Perennial flow-ers and shrubs cost more in the short term, but will last for years. Maximize annuals, as well; they

are a great way to add a splash (or two) of color. You can choose interest-ing planters, such as cop-per pots or eco-planters, or decorative plant stands to create a focal point.

Remember, you already have beautiful greenery to set the stage, and you don’t have to break the bank to create a gorgeous outdoor space that will be like adding a room to your house for six to eight

months of the year.Whatever your person-

al style, and however you plan to use your newly designed outdoor room, making the space an ap-pealing destination will ensure that you and your family and friends will be clamoring for the warm weather - and the good company and fun to be had in your new backyard entertainment spot.
