The word “sentinel” means a soldier or guard whose job is

to keep watch. And that name fits Dave

Godbolt’s construction company per-fectly.

“When I do a project, I look at it as a partner-ship between me and my clients,” said the owner of Sentinel Construction. “And part of my job is to protect their interests.”

Godbolt named his com-pany “Sentinel” in honor of his late brother, who owned a security com-pany with the same name.

“More than anything, that’s why I picked it,” he said.

But the name provides a great visual of what Godbolt and his crew strive for when helping hom-eowners build or remodel.

Sentinel Construction has been in business since 1997. Over the years, Godbolt has witnessed a vast improvement in the products available on the market. When building a new structure or an addi-tion, he applies advance-framing techniques, which helps cut lumber expense by up to 20 percent. Less lumber in the walls allows for more insulation which, in turn, cuts down on ener-gy expenses.

Proper insulation is key to maintaining a comfort-able home and stabilizing energy consumption.

“Many of my clients are my age — baby boomers,” he said. “And they are try-ing to secure the cost of liv-ing as best as they can.”

Sentinel Construction contracts with a special-ist, who performs a blower

door test, which Godbolt said is a fantastic way to show air leaks in a house. The test consists of a large fan that depressurizes the air in the house. By using infrared cameras, the spe-cialist identifies where air is leaking from the house.

The test also shows where cold spots are in walls because of missing or damaged insulation.

Sentinel Construction can then pinpoint the exact areas that need more insula-tion or gaps filled.

“It’s pretty dog-gone amazing the improvements you can make to a home

that drastically improves operating costs and com-fort levels,” Godbolt said.

But Sentinel Construction is more than just insulation and caulk. A visit to the company website shows photographs of beautiful woodwork, elegant bathrooms, modern kitchens and even whimsi-cal playhouses.

Godbolt strives for excel-lence and takes pride that his company is a member of the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County. Members of the association are in the top of their trade with respect to quality of workmanship, and have the proper licens-ing and insurance. Godbolt said many of Sentinel’s competitors are not prop-erly insured or licensed, which puts the homeowner at risk. Before hiring con-tractors, it’s important to make sure they are licensed with the state.

Sentinel Construction also has the distinction of being a Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist, and was the first company awarded this honor in Kitsap County. To become certified, Godbolt attended a series of classes in design

theory. He also went through sensory depriva-tion training in order to experience first-hand what living with limited vision or being less mobile entailed.

“During the training, we wore glasses that would fog and cloud our vision and (there were) appliances that made it difficult to walk,”

Godbolt said. Sentinel Construction

also specializes in handi-capped-accessible construc-tion. Godbolt strives to create accessible designs that make life comfortable without the “hospital-look” of traditional handicapped-accessible construction.

Godbolt admits he

learned this the hard way. The first time Sentinel had a booth at the Home Show, he decked it out with safety products and grab bars.

“It was amazing that those who would need the products the most — those using walkers or canes

— ignored the booth and charged away as quickly as they could,” Godbolt said.

He realized those with physical challenges don’t want to be reminded of

Sentinel’s David Godbolt: “Many of my clients are my age — baby boomers. And they are trying to secure the cost of living as best as they can.”

To ensure visibility of the PSE logo, it is imperative that a definitive safety area surrounds the logo. The safety area must be no less than the height of the PSE letters (defined as “x” in the illustration). It is prefer-able to have more space around the logo. This example demonstrates an absolute minimum safety area.

In North Kitsap, it seems, March Madness has little to do with

basketball and more to do with the home and garden.

Ciscoe Morris, the rock star of the home and gar-den set, presents a seminar at the Peninsula Home & Garden Expo on March 17. The expo begins March 16 and continues through March 18, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. Hours are March 16, 2-8 p.m.; March 17, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and March 18, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 adults and $5 military, seniors and teens. Children younger than 12 get in for free. Visit www.kitsaphba-homeshow.com/coupon.html for a coupon worth a dollar off admission.

The expo is presented by the Kitsap Home Builders Association. There will be more than 200 exhibitors; if you want information about decorating, garden-ing, painting, remodeling, tree care – you name it, it’s here. You can learn to do a lot of stuff yourself at semi-nars or workshops held throughout the show.

Morris is the well-known host of the weekly show “Gardening with Ciscoe,” on KING5 TV. His Friday night Q&A show, “Gardening with

Ciscoe Live” is broadcast on Northwest Cable News and he also makes regular appearances on “Gardening by the Yard” on the Home and Garden cable network.

You can also catch his gar-dening advice mixed with a hearty dose of humor every Saturday morning on News Talk 97.3 KIRO FM.

Morris’ book, “Ask

Ciscoe,” is among the top-selling garden books nationwide. In addition, he co-authored books on roses and perennials, and he also writes a garden column for

the Thursday edition of The Seattle Times.

The Bainbridge Island Home & Garden Show is March 31, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Woodward

Middle School, 9125 NE Sportsman Club Road, Bainbridge Island.

The Home & Garden Show is an all-day trade show, with accompanying demonstrations and work-shops featuring displays from Bainbridge Island and Kitsap County area hardware, lumber and paint stores, architects and interior designers, builders and contractors, landscap-ers, nurseries, real estate agencies and other firms involved in the home and garden marketplace.

According to the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce, the show is for local and area residents “interested in new home development ideas, home improvement projects, home decorating, landscap-ing and gardening, etc.” Admission is free. Last year’s event attracted more than 1,000 people.

Miss Snippy once knew a dear but deluded gardener who

would never plant a pear tree if a persimmon would do. She believed that if a plant could endure a sweaty Southern sum-

mer, or pull through a harsh Midwest winter, then it would do even better here on the Kitsap Peninsula. Her vegetable

garden ran to sweet potatoes and peanuts. Her tomato plants were the biggest, beefiest big boys ever bred. Watermelons? Why not?

The more unlikely, the more she lusted. In her ornamental beds, shivering acacias and euca-lyptus rubbed shoulders with a Hopa crabapple that was slowly succumbing to mildew and scab. The delphinium never quite per-formed up to Alaskan standards;

her hostas were eaten by slugs and her blackspot-ridden roses by deer. Poor choices all, and Miss Snippy remembers her friend’s garden as a lunar-esque landscape of gaping holes where the remov-al of last winter’s casualties pro-vided graves for future victims.

This is not to suggest that delphinium, hostas, crabapples, and roses cannot be grown in the maritime Northwest, simply that they require a bit more care and forethought than they might in other parts of the country. Gardeners must decide how much time and heartache they will invest in their plants. As for Miss Snippy, while we under-stand (and suffer from) Plant Acquisition Syndrome, we also like to feel successful.

With this in mind, let us turn to the lovely reliables of the gar-den: plants that mind their own business and won’t embarrass you in front of company. These are

the landscape staples of the Kitsap Peninsula that personal experi-ence has shown to be attractive, easy-going, well-behaved, healthy, and of moderate size. None of them is inordinately toxic, expen-sive, rare, or beloved of deer or slugs. Major show with minor fuss is our goal.

We won’t claim that all of these are Miss Snippy”s heart-pounding favorites — the plants she wants to be buried with (or beneath). Rather, these are the plants we can take for granted. Purchase prima donnas to your heart’s content, but let this list provide a framework. Here is where you may narrow down the myriad choices that await you at the nursery this spring. After all, as garden author Allen Lacy said: “Gardening is complicated, and prejudice simplifies it enor-mously.”

How sweet it is. Springtime that is, or at least the hint

of it. And if the soft green shoots of new growth in the garden and light in the sky after 6 p.m. are inspiring you to tackle the projects for the home and garden you’ve been dreaming about all winter, I want you to think “library.”

Why? Because we’re here to help; it’s what we do. We have the kinds of print

books, digital e-books, audio books, magazines, and DVDs that can make all the difference to you and to the success of your projects.

What kinds of projects? How about chickens? Raising chickens seems to be all the rage in cities and towns across our country. Here are a few titles for you

to consider:■ Chicken Coops:

45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock, by Judy Pangman.

This e-book is available

in EPUB format through the Kitsap Regional Library downloadable collection at www.krl.org.

■ The Chicken Whisperer’s Guide to Keeping Chickens: Everything You Need to Know . . . and Didn’t Know You Needed to Know About Backyard and Urban Chickens, by Andy Schneider and Brigid McCrea.

This print book is quite popular and may require

a hold to be placed on it. When it is your turn in line, it will ship to the Poulsbo Library for you to pickup.

How about pruning trees and plants?

■ Turnbull’s Guide to Pruning, by Cass Turnbull

The Poulsbo Library has two print copies of this popular little number. One of our visitors reported, “It gave me courage and know-how to be assertive

The New Sunset Western Garden Book

distinguished 40-year career as an architect and founding partner of Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects. He earned his bachelor of architecture from the University of Oregon in 1967. His design phi-losophy emerged from his Cherokee-Choctaw ances-tors, which connects him to the natural world, animal

world, spirit world, and human world.

Jones’ designs have won widespread acclaim for their reverence for the earth, for paying deep respect to regional archi-tectural traditions and native landscapes, and for heightening understanding of indigenous people and cultures of America. He has led the design of numerous cultural centers and muse-ums.

Jones received the University of Oregon

Distinguished Service Award “not just designing buildings, but creating plac-es that incorporate both the practical and the spiritual, and for heightening human sensitivity to cultural and environmental issues.”

Jones has lived on Bainbridge Island since 1967.

“Bainbridge Island is a place that I love, a com-munity that I love, a place where much goodness has been shared with me and my family over the 45

years, and it’s nice to help where I can,” he wrote in an email to Tour of Architects promoter Elizabeth Gadbois.

Jones is involved in The Island Gateway project on Bainbridge, across from the ferry landing.

“Understanding the spirit of a place is really important — the land where a project resides, the plants that share the site, the human use history, the animals that use the site and would like to use the

site, all these things add up to the ‘spirit of a place,’ and it’s worth knowing it when a design is to be created. (Island Gateway) will be a simple design centering around the many parts of welcome.”

Impact of great design on quality of life

Gadbois wrote in the event brochure that the event will hopefully raise awareness of architects and architecture, “and bring to the forefront the impact

that great design can have on quality of life.

“Perhaps the most valu-able experience you will gain is meeting the archi-tects who helped their clients’ dreams become reality. Many of the projects will also be co-hosted by building contractors and subcontractors, and you will get a sense of the team who made the projects come alive.”

No cameras are allowed and children must be supervised.

with my plants.”How about gardening?

For the armchair enthu-siast:

■ GardenStory: Inspiring Spaces, Healing Places, a DVD that cel-ebrates the many shapes, faces, and gifts of a garden.

■ Garden Design maga-zine, available in print to read near the fireplace in our building or you can checkout back issues for three weeks and enjoy them at your leisure at home.

■ Gardens Illustrated magazine, a British publi-cation that offers planting ideas, pictures of beautiful gardens, and expert advice.

■ MaryJane’s Farm: the everyday organic lifestyle magazine, we picked this title up a few years ago on the recommendation of one of our selectors. People love it.

For the gardener who wants to play in the dirt:

■ The New Western Garden Book: The Ultimate Gardening Guide (Sunset Western Garden Book), (2012), regular print format.

Previous editions can be found tattered and worn with dirt prints on favorite pages in the garages and private libraries of garden-ers everywhere. My mom, a gardening enthusiast, gave each of my siblings and me a copy of this beloved tome for Christmas one year. It is the one we all refer to when we have questions and take with us to nurseries when we shop for new plants.

For those who want to grow fruits and vegetables:

■ All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space!, by Mel Bartholomew (2005), regu-lar print format.

■ The Beginner’s Guide to Growing Heirloom Vegetables: The 100 Easiest-to-Grow, Tastiest-to-Eat Vegetables for Your Garden, by Marie Iannotti (2012), regular print for-mat.

■ The Organic Fruit Gardener, by Yvonne Cuthbertson (2011), regu-lar print format.

How about those home projects?

■ The Energy-

Smart House, by Fine Homebuilding (2011), regular print format.

■ 500 Ideas for Small Spaces: Easy Solutions for Living in 1000 Square Feet or Less, by Kimberley Seldon (2007), digital eBook format.

■ 1000 Sensational Makeovers: from the edi-tors of House Beautiful (2011), regular print for-mat.

■ Fix, Repair & Replace: Upgrade Your Home Like a Pro! Reader’s Digest Association (2011), regular print format.

■ The Best of Ask This

Old House: 44 Common Household Projects Done Right, (2010) DVD.

Do these get you started? I hope so. If not, we have more. Call us, come on in, visit our website, www.krl.org, find us on FaceBook, and chat online. We’re here.

Want to enjoy a sweet spring? Think “library.”
