VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP (Two Days)April Ferry and Donna RomeroAlvaro Castagnet is an internationally renowned master watercolorist. Recognized with top honors in major art competitions worldwide, he is a member of prestigious watercolor societies including AWS, AWI, and ACUA. He often contributes to international art publications and his latest book, Painting With Passion-Beyond Technique, is a bestseller. Students must have an interest in visual art and be motivated spend time in the space and atmosphere of art galleries. We will travel on foot and use public transportation. CLIMBING / BOULDERING (Two Days)Rhonda CinottoThe fi rst day will be spent climbing at Seattle Bouldering Project and the second day at Stone Gardens, with a day of community service (recovery for tired arms) in between.Bring: Sack lunch or lunch money.Hours: 8:30 – 3:00Cost: $10

COMMUNITY SERVICE (Three Days)Dan McNameeWe will do three separate community service projects in the Seattle area. It should be enjoyable, worthwhile, and fun. Service credit awarded for all three days.Bring: Sack lunch & snack each day Hours: 8:30 – 3:00

DISC GOLF (Two Days)David JohnsNo experience required except that you love the idea of throwing discs at targets. There are several good disc golf courses around the Puget Sound that we will try to visit. If you have done this be-fore, you should have a fun time improving your game. I AM SHER-LOCKED (Two Days)Joel UnderwoodThe game is afoot! Join us for two days of exploration of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic sleuth. We’ll dive into the original source material (yes, there will be a small bit of pre-reading involved), take a look at the various incarnations of Holmes and Watson from Rathbone to Brett to Downey to Cumber-batch, and perhaps even get out and about and do some deduction and mystery solving ourselves! Deer-hunter hat and scarf optional. Bring: Sack lunch or lunch moneyHours: 8:30 - 3:00

Urban Fitness and Relaxation (Two Days)Michael Claxton and Natalie GeorgeLooking for a way to relieve some stress? Well we’ve got the answer for you, Boxing and Yoga! Yes, that’s right! Get all your stress out by punching a heavy bag or maybe even sparring with a classmate. Then, you will have some non-contact relaxation by participating in some warm yoga. Imagine you are on the warm beaches of Hawaii while mov-ing through a fl ow of yoga poses in 80 degrees. We might even have time to explore one of our local parks. FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD (Two Days)Michael Cimino and Paul ShapiroThis spring days is for those who love to eat AND work. We will take 8-10 students to Vashon, where we will take over the kitchen at Vashon co-housing. Half the group will cook and elegant 4-5 course lunch for the team. The other half will spend a few hours working on an organic farm. On day 2, the roles will be reversed and we will make a completely different luncheon. The menu will be devised by the group. The recipe’s will be developed by Paul Shapiro. The entertainment by Mike Cimino.Bring: Lunch Provided!Hours: 8:30 - 3:00Cost: May be additional cost based on menu.

CAFE KNITTING (Two Days)Stephanie BloomDoes knit two purl two sound like fun? Whether you’re new to knitting or have a project you’re working on we’ll be knitting up a storm in cafés for a couple of days. On the fi rst day we’ll head to a yarn shop to get some knitting supplies and then head to a café to get our knit on. I have some great patterns for beginning knitters – start a scarf or some fi ngerless gloves! Bring: Snack and lunch money. We will eat off-campus.Hours: 8:30 - 3:00

REMOTE CONTROL ROBOTS (Two Days)Gary Anderson and Ed HofmannWe will spend two days fi rst designing the maps and software to remotely control robots over the Internet and then build upon existing ROOMBA robots carry out our commands. Newcomers are welcome while those with experience in ei-ther software or robotics will be assigned leadership positions in the project. On the second day we will divide into teams and have competitions. Bring your laptops.Bring: Sack lunch or lunch moneyHours: 8:30 - 3:00

REMIX CULTURE (Two Days)Kathy JohnsonThis 2-day course will give students production experience in a number of digital remix genres. Stu-dents will be free to choose the projects and mediums which attract them. Projects can include fanfi c, web dev, digital photography, animated gifs, video, audio (sound effects, music, voice); mashups, 2-d design and writing. For instance a student might design a poster for their favorite movie, or tell a story using sound effects, or create a video satirizing a well-known YouTube video.

Flipcams will be available but students must bring their own digital cameras if they choose to work with photography. The possibility for a group project will be up to the participants. An assignment bank of hundreds of project ideas will be made available to get the creative juices fl owing.Bring: Sack lunch or lunch moneyHours: 8:30 - 3:00

SEWING (Two Days)Chris TschirgiLearn the basics of sewing by constructing a simple garment from a commercial pattern. Choose from a pair of pajama pants, a simple A line skirt or a tote bag. SCRAPBOOKING (Two Days)Charene GrayGet ready to show your craft skills in this two day work-shop! Join us for two fun fi lled days of scrapbooking! We will travel to Urban Scrapbooker in Edmonds, where we will have scrapbooking experts assist us in making our own album. In order to join this event, students must bring a minimum of 20 photos with them. Album, materi-als and scrapbooking tools are provided. The scrapbook theme is “family and friends,” so grab your favorite photo memories and enjoy a day of crafting fun!Bring: Sack lunch or lunch moneyHours: 8:30 - 3:00Cost: May be additional cost based on projects.

MERCER MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE (Three Days)TBDSAAS has long supported students and pro-grams and Asa Mercer Middle School on Beacon Hill. Join us as we spend three days at the school community helping out however is needed, in-cluding spending time with 6th-8th graders. Get to know this community and help SAAS deepen our relationship with Mercer! Service credit awarded. Bring: Sack lunch or lunch moneyHours: 8:30 - 3:00

ZAMBIA PROGRAM (Two Days)Sonja NielsenM’uli bwanji! (Greetings!) This Spring Days program is especially for those students who will be travelling on the SAAS Zambia Trip this coming summer, but is also very much open to students who have been to Zambia, are involved in the SAAS Zambia program, or are interested in getting involved.This Spring Days program will include cooking a traditional Zambian meal, learning a little N’yanja (the African language spoken most commonly around the capital city, Lusaka), watching some docu-mentaries, and other chances to learn more about Zambia and the region. We will spend one of our days doing service projects relating to the Zambia Trip and Program, including making friendship gifts, creating colorful workbooks for Birdland School students, and other projects.
