Student Recreation Center ExpansionWelcome returning and new students, faculty and staff. Campus Recreation has increased your opportunities for recreational sports, classes and activities by expanding the programming within the Student Recreation Center. During the fall semester, we invited the campus community to experience rock climbing on a 50-foot RockWall, strengthen their muscles using our state-of-the-art weight and cardio equipment, swim in the relaxing leisure pool or six-lane lap pool, shower in the new locker rooms, get in a game of pick-up basketball or indoor soccer on our new courts, or take a fitness class in the new multipurpose room.

We are continuing to enhance our services to better serve your needs. In the spring semester, the golf simulator and practice area will give golfers a chance to improve their game and three additional multipurpose rooms will also open.

Parking is convenient and located in the new Speck Street Parking Garage, by the West Campus Fields. The Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Marketing and Fitness and Wellness offices are located in Harris Underground. Watch our expansion video and learn more about the Recreation Center expansion at www.campusrecreation.txstate.edu.

A sport club is a registered student organization assisted by the Campus Recreation Department, formed by individuals motivated by a common interest and desire to participate in a specific sport activity. The club exists to promote and develop skills, engage in competition, encourage peer leadership and enjoy the recreational and social fellowship of a specific sport. Generally, clubs are open to all individuals interested in a sport from novice to extremely skilled. For more information, contact the Sport Clubs Office at 512.245.1791 or www.campusrecreation.txstate.edu/sportclubs.

Faculty and Staff Get involved with Sport Clubs Each year teams search for knowledgeable faculty and staff advisors. Additional interest in instruction or coaching is also welcomed. “As a Women’s Soccer Club advisor, I get to make a difference in a sport that I love. I’ve been a soccer player for 20 years, both while in school and in adult leagues. I can translate my skills to others through advising,” said Julie Saldiva, Texas State staff member.

So far this year, our program has opened its doors to a wide array of potential clubs. Leading the way is the formation of a bass fishing club, the BassCats. Also in the mix is rowing, sand volleyball, bowling, golf, women’s ultimate disc and Brazilian jiujutsu. These additions to our program attract a larger range of students, allowing for more of our diverse student population to become involved. Want to start your own club? It might be easier than you think! Round up 10 interested members, create a constitution, and apply to the Sport Club

Alliance after becoming a registered student organization with the Campus Activities and Student Organizations office. We are excited about the future possibilities we can offer our students. As our student body grows, so will our students’ competitive sporting interests. Being able to offer a diverse and unique mix of clubs will expand the student body’s opportunities to get involved during their college years and show their Bobcat pride.

Adult CPR/AEDFor the person who only needs adult CPR training, this hands-on skills training prepares them to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults. It also teaches the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).Adult, Child, Infant CPR/AEDIncludes everything in the Adult CPR/AED course, but adds on the child and infant component of responding to breathing and cardiac emergencies.CPR for the Professional RescuerThis course teaches students to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants, use an AED on an adult or child victim of cardiac arrest and use personal protective equipment to stop blood borne pathogens and other diseases from spreading. This course is one step up from the Adult, Child, Infant CPR/AED course.First AidThe purpose of this course is to help participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in their environment, recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care. It teaches skills that participants need to know in order to provide immediate care of a suddenly ill or injured person until more advanced medical care arrives.

Recertification CoursesWe offer several courses that allow already certified participants to renew their certification. The course is not as long as the original course, but still thoroughly reviews the course materials. All participants must show their previous certification cards on the first day of class. Anybody unable to provide proof of certification will not be allowed to participate.Lifeguard Training Through classroom learning and hands-on practice, you’ll learn: • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries,

rescue skills - in the water and on land • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you

prepare for any emergency • Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the

public and addressing uncooperative patronsThis course requires participants to pass a pre-course test.
