Two questions haunt every human life and every human community. The first: What are we meant to be? The second: Why are we so far from what

we’re meant to be?

Every paradox requires that we embrace two things that seem like

opposites. The paradox of flourishing is that true flourishing requires

two things that at first do not seem to go together at all. But in fact,

if you do not have both, you do not have flourishing, and you do notcreate it for others.

Here’s the paradox: flourishing comes from being both strong and weak.

Flourishing requires us to embrace both authority and vulnerability,

both capacity and frailty, even—at least in this broken world—both lifeand death.

I used to think that what we feared was vulnerability—the “weak” part

of the paradox. But in the course of writing this book and talking with

many others about the paradox of flourishing, I’ve realized that we fear

authority too. The truth is that we are afraid of both sides of the paradoxof flourishing—and we especially fear to combine them in the only way

that really leads to real life, for ourselves and others.

This book is about how to embrace the life for which we were made—life

that embraces the paradox of flourishing, that pursues greater authority

and greater vulnerability at the same time.

We live in a culture that values activity, achievement

and accomplishment. Whether in our careers, churches,

schools or families, busyness is the norm in our lives,

and anything less makes us feel unproductive and

anxious. We have to work all the harder, then, to pursue

true rest in a 24-7 world that is constantly in motion. John Koessler understands that rest is not automatic

or easy to attain. He names the modern-day barriers

to becoming people of rest and presents a unique

perspective on how pursuing rest leads us to the

heart of God. With honest, biblical reflections on

trends in our culture and churches, he exposes our

misconceptions regarding the concept of rest, as well

as offering correction and practices to align our ideas

with God’s ideal.Discover the true meaning behind Jesus’ idea of the yoke

of rest and restoration for your mind, body and soul.

David Dark

For many of us, the word “religious” immediately

evokes thoughts of brainwashing, violence and eye-

rubbingly tiresome conversations. Why not be done

with it? David Dark argues that it’s not that simple: “If

what we believe is what we see is what we do is who

we are, there’s no getting away from religion.”Both incisive and entertaining, Life’s Too Short to Pretend

You’re Not Religious  combines Dark’s keen powers of

cultural observation with candor and wit. Equal parts

memoir and analysis, Dark persuasively argues that

the fact of religion is the fact of relationship.

Looking hard at our weird religious background (Dark

maintains we all have one) can bring the actual content

of our everyday existence—the good, the bad and

the glaringly inconsistent—to fuller consciousness.By doing so, we can more practically envision an

undivided life and reclaim the idea of being “religious.”

DAVID DARK  (PhD, Vanderbilt University) teaches in the College of Theology at Belmont

University and among the incarcerated communities of Nashville, Tenessee. He is the author

of The Sacredness of Questioning Everything, Everyday Apocalypse and The Gospel According To

America. His writing appears regularly in Pitchfork, Books & Culture and Killing the Buddha.

FEATURES &   BENEFITS

• A thoughtful and lighthearted reflection on

embracing religiosity

• Unmasks cultural tendencies toward being

 judgmental and narrow-minded

“Brace yourself. Our bold conceits, wishful thinking and

soothing sobriquets on the abolition of religion and the end

of faith are set on a collision course thanks to David Dark’s

luminous reckonings with the real. . . . Life’s Too Short to

Pretend You’re Not Religious is an irresistible triumph.”

CHARLES MARSH, University of Virginia, author of Strange

Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“A bracing manifesto for modern people and an optimism-

infused love song to humanity. David Dark calls us to pay

better, more generous attention to our own lives and the

lives of others.”

His newest book is a breath of fresh air—he steps back from all the action to

208 pages, paperback, 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, 978-0-8308-4450-0, $16.00, WPDB I S A C RELIGION / CHRISTIAN MINISTRY / EVANGELISM

F E ATU RE S &   BENEFITS

• A practical guide to contextual apologetics

• Helps readers understand the spiritual but

not religious, atheists and nominal Christians

“Luke Cawley has written the new go-to book for

contextual apologetics. This book is everywhere thoughtful

and judicious; it is wide-ranging and deeply illuminating.”

LEONARD SWEET, Drew University, author of From Tablet to Table

There’s no such thing as a non-Christian.

Somebody might self-identify as spiritual but not religious,

a practicing Hindu, Buddhist or Muslim. Or they might call

themselves an atheist, freethinker or agnostic. But the one

thing that people never describe themselves as is a “non-

Christian.” We need to realize that all non-Christians arenot the same and evangelism is not one-size-fits-all.

Luke Cawley shows how Christians can contextualize the

gospel in different ways to connect with different kinds

of people. Here he unpacks the religious identities of

three key demographics: the spiritual but not religious,

committed atheists and nominal Christians. Each group

has particular characteristics and requires specific

approaches and practices to make the Christian faith

plausible, desirable and tangible to them.Filled with real-life stories of changed lives, this book

is a practical and hopeful resource for helping people

encounter God.

LU K E C A WLE Y   is the director and cofounder of Chrysolis, a UK-based ministry that helps

organizations and churches better communicate the Jesus story. Luke developed missional

communities on university campuses in Britain and Romania and is a regular speaker at

conferences around the world. Luke has a master’s degree in evangelism and leadership from

Wheaton College and a certificate in theological and pastoral studies from Oxford University.

RELIGION / CHRISTIAN LIFE / SPIRITUAL GROWTH

”The thumbprint . . . is for me a singular clue

to human identity. . . . Just as each human

thumbprint is unique, its pattern inscribed onthe work of our hands and minds, the Creator’s

is even more so—the original thumbprints on

the universe,” declares poet Luci Shaw.

We worship an endlessly creative God whose

thumbprints are reflected everywhere we look—

in sunsets, mountains, ocean waves—and in the

invisible rhythms that shape our lives, such as

the movement of planets around the sun. And

this creative and ever-creating God has also left

indelible thumbprints on us.

We reflect God’s imprint most clearly, perhaps,

in our own creating and appreciation for

beauty. A longing for beauty is inherent to

being human. Beauty is also powerful in its

redemptiveness, generosity and inspiration. In

reflecting on the role of beauty in our lives, Luci

writes, “Beauty is Love taking form in human

lives and the works of their hands.”

So come, join Luci as she ponders, through

the beauty of poetry and prose, the sometimes

unexpected places where she encounters God’s

fingerprints, and let it help you learn to see

them in your life as well.

LUCI SHAW   is a poet, essayist, lecturer and writer-in-residence at Regent College,Vancouver. Widely anthologized, her writing has appeared in numerous literary and religiousjournals and she has coauthored three books with Madeleine L’Engle. A founding member ofthe Chrysostom Society of Christian Writers, Shaw is the author of ten volumes of poetry andother titles such as  Adventure of Ascent , Breath for the Bones, Harvesting Fog  and Water My Soul . Herpapers are preserved in the Luci Shaw Collection at Wheaton College’s Buswell Library, andshe lives in Bellingham, Washington.

Does the Bible need to be saved?

Over the course of the centuries, Bible scholars and publishers

have increasingly added “helps”—chapter divisions, verses,

subheads, notes—to the Bible in an effort to make it easier

to study and understand. In the process, however, these have

led to sampling Scripture rather than reading deeply.

According to Glenn R. Paauw, the text has become

divorced from the Bible’s literary and historical context,

becoming a database of quick and easy answers to life’s

troubling questions. In these pages Paauw introduces us

to seven new (to us) understandings of the Bible to help

us recover one deeply engaged Bible. A new practice is

recommended with each “new” Bible.

The Bible’s transformative power is recovered when we

remove the chains Christians have applied to it over thecenturies. This book provides students of the Bible a new

paradigm for reading and living the Bible well.

Happy Ch rch

Pursuing Radical Joy as the People of God

 Foreword by   J O H N O R T B E R G

T I M M CCO N N E L L

Most Christians resist the idea that we are to pursue

happiness. We are more comfortable with the idea of

finding joy or being blessed. But seeking happiness

seems too superficial or too flighty for people of faith.

In Happy Church, Tim McConnell offers a radical callfor Christians to reclaim happiness. Happiness flows

from the joy of the Lord and being glad in Christ. When

the church expresses happiness, we are making a

countercultural choice that the world cannot help but

notice. “It’s time to bring the happy back,” he says. “It’s

time to get serious about happiness.”

This is a book to read with your small group or

congregation, with discussion questions to help youbecome happy together. You’ll discover that God’s call

to the church is to radiate happiness—because we live

in a world that desperately needs it.

This six-session study, based on

Alister McGrath’s book I Believe, introduces us to the Apostles’ Creed

and the essential truths about God

the Father, the person and work of

Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Christians indeed trust in God, and

the basics of our faith have remained

the same for centuries. These truths

are summarized in historic churchdocuments known as creeds. Apostles’

Creed  is an ideal starting point for

this vital process of consolidating our

grasp of the faith.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY  STARRED REVIEW, April 14, 2014

“Slow Church is a manifesto and handbook rolled into

one. . . . It reads like what it is: the long, patient fruit

of two men deeply rooted in a particular place, among

neighbors they know, love, and serve. . . . Make haste,

then. Run, do not walk, to your favorite bookstore, buy

a copy, and set your church table for a feast.”

LESLIE LEYLAND FIELDS, Christianity Today, September 2014

“Inspired by the ‘slow food’ movement and

disheartened by the ‘fast’ church trends, Smith and

Pattison are advocating for ‘reimagining what it means

to be communities of believers gathered and rooted in

particular places at a particular time.’ Slow Church

promises something richer and more substantive than

quick fixes.”

M. Robert Mulholland Jr. defines spiritual formation as “the process of

being formed in the image of Christ for the sake of others.” In Invitation

to a Journey, Mulholland helps Christians new and old to understand that

we become like Christ gradually, not instantly. He reviews the classical

spiritual disciplines and demonstrates the importance of undertaking our

spiritual journey with (and for the sake of) others.

This road map for spiritual formation is profoundly biblical and down

to earth. In the finest tradition of spiritual literature, it is a vital help to

Christians at any stage of their journey. This edition is revised and expanded

by Ruth Haley Barton with a new foreword, practices and study guide.

“My claim is simple: spirituality is grounded in ordinary

life experiences. We need to learn to listen to rhythms of

life, narratives and creation.” So begins Keith Anderson

as he invites us on a journey to relearn how to listen.

Rather than settling for a one-sided relationship with

God in which we speak but never hear back, we canlearn to hear God as we go through our lives. The key

is paying attention to the moments that make up our

days. As we participate in the world around us, God

speaks to us through creation, through our pain and as

we follow God down unexpected pathways.

Learning to listen doesn’t happen in ten easy steps.

Instead it is a process of approaching the world with

wonder and curiosity as we seek to make sense of what

we hear. Hearing God speak takes time and practice, and Anderson offers reflective exercises at the end of

each chapter to help us along the way.

Listen—and step into a world alive with God’s presence.

Seeing Others Through the Eyes of Jesus

Are we able to see others with the eyes of Jesus? Seeing rightly, says Mark

Labberton, is the beginning of how our hearts are changed. Through careful

self-examination in the Spirit, we begin to bear the fruit of love toward

others that can make a difference. Here is a chance to reflect on why our

ordinary hearts can be complacent about the evils in the world and how

we can begin to see the world like Jesus. See what happens when you take

a chance on the dangerous act of loving your neighbor. Your vision just

might be changed forever.

TAKING PASCAL’S WAGER

Faith, Evidence and the Abundant Life

Blaise Pascal’s wager argument made a famous contribution to Christian

apologetics over three hundred years ago. Michael Rota contends that

this argument is still compelling today—since we have much to gain and

relatively little to lose, the wise decision would be to affirm God’s existence,

seek a relationship with God and live a Christian life.

Rota considers the roles of uncertainty, evidence and faith in making a

commitment to God, looking at the effects of such a commitment in the

lives of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Jean Vanier and Immaculée Ilibagiza. Like

Pascal, Rota leaves us with a question: What wager will we make?

 A Guide to Theological Research

Every theology student has to write a research paper, but many do not

know how to go about doing theological research. Professors have twooptions: use valuable class time to teach students as much as they can, or

lower their standards, knowing that students are not prepared.

From Topic to Thesis  offers a third option. This affordable and accessible

tool walks students through the process, focusing on five steps: finding

direction, gathering sources, understanding issues, entering discussion and

establishing a position. Its goal is to take students directly from a research

assignment to a research argument—in other words, from topic to thesis.

 A Christian Missionary to Christians

Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) had a mission—reintroduce the Christian

faith to Christians. How could he break through to people who weremembers of the church and thought they were Christians already?

Mark Tietjen thinks that Kierkegaard’s critique of his contemporaries

strikes close to home today. We also need to listen to one of the

most insightful yet complex Christian thinkers of any era. Through

an examination of core Christian doctrines, Tietjen helps us hear

Kierkegaard’s missionary message to a church that often fails to follow

Christ with purity of heart.
