Welcome to Smith Street Books!

Spring 2016 marks the official launch of Smith Street Books — a new, independent voice in illustrated publishing. Hello!

We are kicking off with eight titles for spring — a vibrant, quirky and hilarious collection of gift-style books (How to Spot a Hipster, The Essential RuPaul, In Line to the Throne and Hipster Baby Names), a completely original gift-style reference book in The World as 100 People, alongside two cookery titles (Jar Salads and the sugar-free Incredible Bakes) and a guide to London’s Best Brunches (a greedy choice, as we do love uncovering the best food in the capital).

As you’ll see from our launch list, we’re serious about design and illustration, we’re serious about food — and we’re deadly serious about making you laugh!

At Smith Street — we make books with personality.

Cheers, Paul McNallyDirector | Publisher

Think your best friend might be a hipster? Are they drinking from mason jars and picking up vintage vinyl on the weekends? Are you concerned that, in fact, you’re a hipster? Judging by your choice of bicycle and taste in single-origin coffee and craft beer – it might be too late for you…

How To Spot A Hipster serves up the most organic hipster recipe, breaking down the ingredients into easily digestible chunks of well-legit information. Fixie-bike riding from grooming to fashion, and to all extents of the hipster lifestyle, this comprehensive cornucopia of content will ensure you never again use the h-word without complete confidence.

Incredible Bakes*That just happen to be sugar free!

By Caroline Griffiths

ISBN 978-1-925418-04-0Publishing April 2016£20| 274 x 218mm | 176 pages Full-colour | Hardback | Food & Drink

“Get your baking fix with less of the sweet stuff”This is a sweet baking book with a difference — all the recipes are free from refined sugars. Not that you’d notice it, of course — all the recipes are triple-tested and completely delicious. Rather than use refined sugar — which has been shown to adversely affect health — author Caroline Griffiths has added sweetness using natural fruits and, occasionally, other non-fructose sweeteners, including rice malt syrup.

Recipes include baking classics, such as shortbreads, cheesecakes, cookies and cupcakes, as well as more contemporary bakes, including macarons, cruffins and donuts. With a section on over-the-top celebration cakes as well, Incredible Bakes will have you covered.

For those looking to reduce their sugar intake, now you can have your cake and eat it too!

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Caroline Griffiths is an accredited cook and nutritionist, food writer and food stylist based in Melbourne, Australia, with over 25 years of food industry experience.

The Essential RuPaulHerstory, philosophy & her fiercest queens

Illustrations by Libby VanderPloeg

“The essential guide for fans of the most famous drag queen in the world”RuPaul — the most famous drag queen in the world, recording artist, cult television host, pop-cultural icon — is celebrated in this essential fan guide.

Bursting onto the scene over two decades ago (with huge hit ‘Supermodel of the World’) RuPaul has been confounding critics to clear her own path over the many years since. Most recently, RuPaul has again become an unlikely pop-cultural icon by producing and starring in RuPaul’s Drag Race — a reality television series that judges the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent of the competing drag queens. Over seven seasons and numerous spin-off series (including All Stars and RuPaul’s Drag U), RuPaul’s Drag Race has become a cult global hit — fans know the catchphrases, the personalities, the catfights.

The Essential RuPaul celebrates Ru’s history (or, herstory, as she frames it) and philosophy (“if you can’t love yourself — how in the hell you gonna love someone else?”), as well as profiling the most loved and reviled queens from her TV series. This is one for the true fans.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Libby VanderPloeg is an illustrator living and working in Brooklyn. She spends her days drawing and painting flora and fauna of all varieties, preferring to work with a strong cup of coffee always at arms reach. Her work has been featured in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and Design*Sponge, and in books from Farrar, Straus & Giroux, HarperCollins, and Hardie Grant.

In Line to the ThronePrince Charles and the next 29 in waiting

By J. Christoph Cassar Illustrations by Oslo Davis

“The not-so-regal heirs to the British throne”We all know who’s next in the line to the British throne: Charles, William, George, Charlotte, Harry. All well-known tabloid darlings. But what about everyone else in the waiting room? In Line To The Throne traces the line of succession from Lady Di’s ex through to the Kiwi-born thirtieth in line, Tane Mahuta Lewis, profiling and assessing the leadership skills of each along the way. These plump scones of delectable biographic information will leave you satisfied in a way that no trashy celebrity magazine can, letting you in on the every-day practices and machinations of the world’s most (in)famous Royal Family.

Learn how Beatrice will lead a stylistic revolution that leads to the heightening of all royal doorways. Learn how William will take a leaf out of North Korea’s book and implement mandatory male hairstyles. Learn how baby Charlotte will fight to remove the stigma attached to bedwetting.

By the book’s end, you’ll have not only earned a PhD in all-things-monarchic, but you’ll now have enough dirt on the extended Royal Family to make the Queen’s head spin.

Hipster Baby NamesReally, really, ridiculously good names for your kid

By Paul McNally

“Don’t let your kid miss out on a cool name!”Having a child with a boring old family name isn’t enough these days — John and Jane just doesn’t cut it. How can you possibly keep up with your hipster neighbours?

Hipster Baby Names has the answer — give your child the most hipster name you can. For girls, you could try Anais, Enid, Beatrix, Beryl, Scout or Ethel, or Arlo, Atticus, Axl, Lennon or Bear for a boy. With helpful meanings (when they’re not completely made-up words — or taken from cult television shows such as Game of Thrones) you’ll be giving your offspring the best chance of a cool life.

The World as 100 People

Edited by Lucy Heaver & Hannah Koelmeyer Illustrated by Aileen Lord

“Fascinating facts about the 7 billion people that inhabit our planet”What would the world look like if the 7 billion people on this planet were presented as 100 individuals? This beautifully illustrated and informative infographics book re-examines the world’s population with fascinating and often sobering results. Covering diverse subjects such as demography, education, technology and health, The World as 100 People reveals that 61 people are Asian, 15 are African, 10 come from Europe and 14 are from the Americas. 51 people live in cities, yet 36 lack basic access to sanitation. 21 people are overweight, 15 are undernourished and 1 is starving. 40 individuals are regular Internet users and 21 have a Facebook page. Perhaps most shockingly of all, 48 people currently live on less than US$2 per day while 1 person owns 48% of all the world’s wealth.

With bold infographics from Melbourne-based designer and artist Aileen Lord, The World as 100 People highlights the reality of the world we live in. It is enlightening and thought provoking, and will ensure that you’ll never look at the world’s population in the same way again.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Co-editors Lucy Heaver and Hannah Koelmeyer are two Melbourne-based writers and editors with a penchant for finding fascinating, yet hard-hitting facts and presenting them in interesting ways. Covering a wealth of subjects from food to history to design, they have contributed to multiple publications in Australia, US and the UK. They are also the founders of Tusk editorial studios.
