Yes, there are & will be more changes and clarification for

Guardrail Many of the changes being made

now are the results of the comments received from the Field during the Guardrail Installation Training.

You made the difference with your concerns and comments – YOU DID GOOD!!!

Guardrail Mounting Height Important -What is

Maintenance to do on Damaged Guardrail??

27” Guardrail that is damaged will be replaced to a minimum height of 27”

If existing NCHRP 350/MASH Approved Guardrail End Treatments are damaged they may be repaired – if destroyed - then replace with current KY Approved NCHRP 350/MASH End Treatments

If non-NCHRP 350/MASH Guardrail End Treatments are damaged they must to be replaced with current NCHRP 350/MASH End Treatments

Page 4: Spring 2013 Section Engineers Conference March 5, 2013 Guardrail Items Terry Chism, Div of Const

Proprietary Guardrail End Treatments will remain at

27” Mounting Height KY will continue using NCHRP 350 Approved 27”

Guardrail End Treatments until 29” End Treatments are Tested and Approved

TRANSITION: Utilize the last 2 sections of 12’ 6” Guardrail (25’) prior to the Pay Limits of the End Treatment to Transition from the 29”Guardrail Mounting Height to the 27” End Treatment --- ie do not change the mounting height within the pay limits of the end treatment

Mounting Height for Type 2A and Type 3 End Treatments

is 29” +/- 1” WHY?? These End Treatments are Built with

Generic Materials – they are not Proprietary Beginning with the June 2012 Letting Sect 719.03 KY 2012 Standard Specifications

has been changed to read “Construct guardrail 29 inches to the top of the rail, with a tolerance of plus or minus one inch above the theoretical pavement elevation” (shoulder slope extended)

Critical!!!Type 7 Concrete Anchor

1. The concrete anchor block maybe precast or cast-in-place. When the anchor is cast-in-place forming of the sides shall be required.

Design, Construction & Maintenance be Aware!!!

Just because a Guardrail End Treatment is in place or in a set of plans it doesn’t make it right!!!!: It may NOT be at the proper location It may not be the best end treatment for that

location Design & Consultants need to check in

the field – so often 3R/4R plans place new treatments at the old/current location (may be 30 years old & incorrect)

Page 26: Spring 2013 Section Engineers Conference March 5, 2013 Guardrail Items Terry Chism, Div of Const

Design, Construction & Maintenance be Aware!!!

Maintenance & Safety Projects need to be checked in the field for proper End Treatment Type and Location

Construction can/should make changes whenever they note an end treatment in the plans that does not look correct

When a Guardrail End Treatment is damaged and needs replaced, a field determination should be made as to proper Type and Location

“You CANNOT Disconnect(or separate)

Grading and Guardrail”

Problems with Older ET’s with Wood Post

Lag Screws stripped and fall out – either replace Post or Rotate Old Post 180 Degrees and install new Lag screws (Pilot Holes)

By Change Order – any/all of the following may be

changed on Pre June 2012 Projects

Guardrail Mounting Height 27” to 29” Change old stiff Type 2A End Treatment

to newer, softer Type 2A – Sepia 007 (no concrete required)

Guardrail Post in Rock can be changed to the new method of installation (no concrete required)

Delete backup plates Can be combined in one Change Order

2012 Standard Specification Section 719.03Guardrail:

New Requirement “Prior to ordering guardrail materials the Engineer

and the Contractor shall meet on the job site to check the guardrail end treatments locations designated in the plans against actual field conditions to determine if the locations and end treatment  types are appropriate.  Adjustments will be made as appropriate and final location and end treatment types will be approved by the engineer.  If considered necessary, the Engineer will consult with the Division of Design.”
