Cougars look to upper classmen to lead them to success in 2013.The Mankato East baseball team has a load of talent back from last years squad, which is getting the Cougar nation

excited for the possibility of another trip back to the state tournament for the first time since 2010.

LUCAS RYANstaff writer

The High School baseball sea-son has begun and the Mankato East Baseball team looks to their experienced lineup to lead the Cougars this season.

The Cougars will return eight starters to their lineup from last year. Head Coach Dan Quame expects these players to lead the team to a successful season.

“My expectations are that we have the experience, I truly believe that we will be competi-tive in the Big Nine and put forth a good product on the field.”

The Cougars top hitter the past two years, Drew Quame is a senior this year and they will also look to the all-conference second baseman to hit in the middle of their lineup. Quame has played on the varsity team since he was in ninth grade and was a “con-tributor” on the team that took fourth in the AA state tourna-ment in 2010.

Mankato East will be return-ing their starting shortstop from last year, Jordan Grams, who is a senior this year. He has played on the varsity team since his sopho-more year. Grams is an athletic shortstop that will be expected to pitch some innings also, Quame said.

“He (Grams) is a very solid defensive player,” Quame said. “He swings a good bat and is a decent hitter.”

Grams and Drew Quame are expected to perform well on the field this year, but are also leaders on the team behind the scenes.

“Drew and Jordan are the electric captains of the team,” Quame said.

Senior, Brandon Adema is a starting pitcher for the Cougars and has pitched at the varsity level since he was a sophomore and logged more than 36 varsity innings. Adema uses his velocity to blow past batters.

He brings a lot of experience,” Quame said. “We are expect-ing him to be one of our main anchors on the mound.”

Arlen Nett is another pitcher the Cougars will use to keep scores low. Nett logged two wins in 18 varsity innings as a junior. Nett does not try to overwhelm batters with velocity. Instead he uses his control to get outs, Quame said.

“He has really worked at his trade and developed into a good high school pitcher,” Quame said.

Returning seniors Mike Zellar, Patrick Rohlfing, Brent Adams and returning junior Sean Allan played quality time last

year and are expected to be big contributors this year as well. The rest of the team is also work-ing hard to earn playing time and contribute for the team this year.

“We got 17 kids on the roster and they are all working hard,” Quame said.

Practice for the Cougars started March 18, but the cold weather this spring has restricted the team to practicing in the school gym. The school shares their only gym with the all spring sports teams, making it a very busy place. A game like base-ball can be hard to practice in a crowded gym so they are doing what they can to get outside.

“We have just one main facil-ity, the high school building and the gymnasium and we use that from minute to minute it’s open,” Quame said. “So we are watch-ing the weather, even if we can get out in the parking lot and catch some fly balls, that’s what we’ll do.“

“I look at us as a blue-collar type of team. We are going to work hard, we are going to have to scratch and claw, were going to have to pitch and just out work the opponent,” Quame said. ”We are not going to be a real flashy team. Our goal is just to play baseball the way we perceive to be the right way.”

One month after the NCAA track and field indoor champion-ships concluded, the Gustavus Adolphus College track and field team is ready to get outside.

Last year, the Gusties were able to get outside to practice in early March, which resulted in a lot of good times early in the year, compared to this spring. Due to the snow, ice, cold and wind the Gusties have resorted to practicing inside, which is taking its toll on the team, Head Coach Dale Barh said.

“Any time you have to run on a smaller track (indoors), it is harder on the body so we have been dealing with a little bit of injuries early in the season, but I think that with the weather turn-ing we will be able to get outside and get those injuries healed up,” Bahr said.

The Gusties have finally made it outside during the first week in April, but because that was their week of spring break, only a few athletes have been on campus to take advantage of the outdoor practices.

“Practicing indoors com-pared to outdoors is completely different. Right now every-one is going stir crazy being

inside.”The Gusties women finished

fourth in the conference during the indoor season, with the men finishing in the seventh spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The results could have been better if the team was completely healthy, but that was not the case. Now, as the outdoor season begins, the Gusties will try to improve from their time indoors.

Gusties senior Josh Owens finished tied for fourth place at the NCAA indoor cham-pionships, which earned him all-American honors for finish-ing within the top eight spots. Owens became the first Gustie athlete to earn this honor for mens pole vault.

Cameron Claues also won all-American accolades in the NCAA indoor track and field championships. Clause, a graduate of Mankato East High School, took fifth place in the heptathlon competition earing him a spot on the all-American team as well. Clause, like Owens was the first Gustie to receive the all-american honors in his event.

Allyson Voss also made it to the indoor NCAA champion-

Loyola softball looks to establish their place in a new conference

After the Crusaders' 2012 run ended in the section championship, Mankato Loyola now finds themselves in the Valley Conference and is ready to repeat.

ADAM PIERSONstaff writer

Coming off a perfect 12-0 regular season in 2012, the Mankato Loyola Crusaders hope to finish what they fell short of last postseason.

New Ulm Cathedral stopped the Crusaders run by a score of 4-2 in the 2012 section champi-onship. During the 2012 season, the Crusaders refrained from being shutout but shutout their opponents seven times through-out the season.

Loyola will face some tough challenges in the 2013 season but that doesn’t discourage the enthusiastic group. Loyola, who had great success playing in the Gopher conference in 2012 has now been moved to the Valley conference for the 2013 season. “We are new in the Valley con-ference this year so I'm not sure who our rivals will be,” head coach Jessica Kirschner said.

“We have all of our starters returning except for Bobbi Sell-ner who was our catcher. This is the biggest change and biggest hole to fill,” Kirschner said.

Sellner was named team MVP of the 2012 Crusaders.

“I think losing in the sec-tion championship last year has pushed our players to reach for their goals even more. The sea-son didn't end the way they were hoping it would and it's made them even more determined to get to state this year,” Kirschner

said. Loyola has plenty of talent

returning from 2012, and also some new faces with promise.

“We have a lot of younger girls with tremendous poten-

tial, but they haven't been tested yet at the varsity level. I'm sure some, if not all, will step up at some point,” Kirschner said.

LCWM baseball aims for top of Valley Conference

The Knights plan to bounce back from their 9-12 overall mark in 2012. With a high amount of players returning, head coach John Madsen knows his team will compete once again.

LUCAS RYANstaff writer

The Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial High School baseball team kicked-off their 2013 sea-son in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on April 2, with a 5-2 loss against Maple River High School.

With the help of the Knights’ booster club, it has become an annual tradition to start the season with a game at the Metrodome.

“We have a really support-ive athletics booster club so we know we are going to get a game in for sure, and we try to do it the first week of the sea-son,” Head Coach John Madsen said.

Due to Minnesota’s spring weather, sometimes the fields are not ready to be used. By playing in the Metrodome the team will avoid the cold weather for one game, while gaining memories they will have forever.

“It’s kind of a fun experi-ence for the kids and gives them something that they will remember for the rest of their life,” Madsen said. “That’s what athletics is all about. Not only do you try to win and teach lifelong skills but also you know making it as positive experience as you can.”

Madsen challenges the team early on in the season with a very difficult non-conference schedule. The Knights had a 9-11 record last year but still won the Valley Conference

after finishing 6-2 in confer-ence play.

“We are an A team so we try to schedule all the non-confer-ence games with AA schools. I think it will payoff for us in the end when it comes to the playoffs,” Madsen said.

Madsen will look to be more aggressive offensively than in past years. Due to the new bats implemented last year not allowing the ball to carry as far, there has not been as much extra base hits and home runs. Last year the Knights only recorded three home runs the entire season and those did not come until the end of the season.

“Last year we went to these new bats that are probably 30 percent less recoil, they are more like a wooden bat, so we probably bunt a little more and I think most teams have gone to that style,” Madsen said.

Lake Crystal will have many returning players as only three starters graduated last year. The knights will have to rely on their experience during their challenging non-conference schedule.

Junior Bryan Davis led the team last year with a .440 bat-ting average. As the Knights leadoff batter, Davis will be expected to get on base often. Davis pitched in a lot of innings last year as the no. two pitcher for the Knights.

“He (Davis) has really improved. He has got four good pitches and I would say we can count on him,” Madsen said.

Kolten Barker will be one of the top pitchers for the Knights’ this year. After missing last season due to an injury, the Knights will have him healthy to start the year in 2013. He is a well-rounded player that can play several positions other than pitcher.

”He can play everywhere so he is really a luxury to have,” Madsen said.

Jordan Nelson, will be the starting catcher on the team. Nelson was the starter last year and will bat in the clean-up role for the Knights.

“He (Nelson) had a lot of good innings for us last year,” Madsen said.

Practice has been held inside for most of this spring which consists of batting cages in the gym to work on pitching and catching. The gym allows the Knights enough space to create an infield and work on those skills as well. Madsen doesn’t mind practice inside but expects to be practicing outside soon.

“The main thing about being indoors that I think kind of gives us an advantage is it gives us a chance to work on our fundamentals. We do a lot more reps, hitting and fielding, bunts and all that stuff,” Madsen said.

“We anticipate us having a good year even though we really have a loaded schedule,” Madsen said. “Our goal is to win are section. We think we have as good of chance as anybody.”Photo by SPX Sports

SCC baseball: cardinal red stains the conferenceFairmont High School has taken the South Central Conference basbeall throne for the past three years, and with a heap of talent returning in 2013, their is no doubt that the Cardinals will once again compete towards the top for a conference championship.

ADAM PIERSONstaff writer

The South Central Confer-ence for baseball has been dominated by the Fairmont Cardinals in recent history, winning the SCC three of the last four years.

Last year, New Ulm and Fairmont shared a 9-1 record in the SCC before Fairmont beat New Ulm in the section championship.

The Cardinals have made it to state for three consecu-tive years in baseball, beating New Ulm in the section 3AA championship each year.

The Cardinals have plenty to be excited about, four play-ers who earned all-conference honors last year will be back for the 2013 season.

Last year’s team MVP, senior Levi Becker who plays utility for the Cardinals also pitches. Levi Becker held a .378 batting average and led the team with 37 hits and 21 RBIs. He also scored the second most runs for his team with 25. Levi Becker held a 3-0 record on the mound while maintaining an unprecedented .44 ERA in his 16 innings pitched.

Another senior, Bryce Holm, provided solid contribu-tion for the Cardinals batting .278, combined with a 1.34 ERA and a 4-2 record on the bump. Holm also led the team in strikeouts with 45.

Junior Luke Becker, who played second base and pitched, led the team in innings pitched with 56.2. Becker held a 6-1 record and an ERA of 1.67 on the bump as well as a .292 average from the plate an 17 walks, to tie for most in the season with fellow junior Mitch Pfingsten.

Sophomore Spencer Chirp-ich who plays shortstop for the Cardinals also came in second in innings pitched with 54.1, sustaining an ERA of 1.67 with a record of 8-1. Chirpich batted .330 and had the second most RBIs with 18 and second most hits with 34. Chirpich also led the Cardinals with 26 runs scored.

With the Cardinals’ experi-ence in the playoffs, one can only assume that the 2013 sea-son will be another success.

“This is my 7th year as head coach at Fairmont. Our biggest rival is New Ulm, we compete for the conference championship and section

championships every year,” Todd Sukalski, Fairmont’s head varsity baseball coach said.

Fairmont placed fourth in the state tournament falling 3-0 to Holy Family Catholic School. The Cardinals scored a total of 182 runs on 237 hits all of last year while only al-lowing 75 runs on 162 hits.

The Cardinals’ overall record was 25-4 in 2012, two of their losses were shut outs and the other two they lost by only one run.

Fairmont set a school record last year with 25 wins and seven of the starters from that team will return this year.

Fairmont is set to face New Ulm twice this upcoming

season, both times towards the end of the season.

The final standings of the SCC in 2012 saw St. Peter fin-ish in third in the conference with a 4-6 mark. Blue Earth and Waseca would end up tied for fourth with 3-7 records and St. James are spent 2012 in the basement, finishing 2-8 in SCC play.

Being a very young team, the Mankato East Cougars have a lot of unanswered questions to start this season.

“We understand that we graduated a lot of talent last year but remain optimistic that our young talent will emerge to fill in those shoes quite well,” East’s boys head coach Jon Dierks said.

“We graduated all of our state entrants from last year but have a good all around team this year. We are hop-ing for someone to emerge as a State caliber athlete, but it is too early to tell who that may be at this point yet,” Dierks said.

Senior Cody Lorentz specializes in the 200 and 400-meter sprints as well as the triple jump and shot put for the Cougars.

“I’d like to get over the 40-foot mark in the triple jump and in the shot put. I’m about four inches off in both of them so I think it can be done,” Lorentz said.

“We have huge poten-tial in our young sprinters: freshmen Ben Schwartz and Robert Miller, as well as sophomores Nic Seiler, Neil Nienaber and Mattu Chuol. Seiler and Chuol could also have great seasons in the jumps.

Freshman Logan Swanson possesses with a ton of poten-tial in the shot put and discus. The depth is good in both of these grades as well, so there will probably be many more to surprise us throughout the year,” Dierks said.

Head coach Neil Parrmann expressed a similar approach to this season after his team placed ninth in the Big Nine a year ago.

“This team is still build-ing off of last year’s young team. We have a nice group of both distance and sprint runners to work with. After our first meet, we were quite impressed with the potential. Andrea Nett and Ivy Glade in our distance events, Shayla Karge in the jumps, sprints and hurdles and Jenny Vetter in the sprints,” Parrmann said.

“We have a decent number of returning athletes that will help lead this team. Claire Ziegler in the jumps and throws, Kelsey Ekstedt in the hurdles, triple jump and sprints. Kjersten Parsons in our distance events, Tay-lor Karge in the jumps and sprints. Emma Baynes and Emily Altenburg return as our top sprinters.

Both Dierks and Parrmann saw great potential in their young team through the first two meets this season. Both

coaches agree that pole vault, sprints and throws will be the team’s strongest events.

Dierks has been the boy’s head coach for seven years, but this will be his 13th at East and Parrmann has coached for 26 years, this be-ing his 10th year as the girl’s head coach.

Needless to say, they have established an effective system over their 13 years of partnership.

Each coach expressed the importance of their assis-tants. Each assistant covers a specific event so their athletes can get ample and effective training in their particular area of track and field.

They also mentioned the importance of each individ-ual reaching to set their per-sonal bests in their respected events as well as giving 100 percent effort day-in and day-out.

The Cougars’ main rival is Mankato West for obvious reasons, but the Fairmont Cardinals are also one of their biggest challengers.

Although East’s track and field team is young, each coach expects to be in the top five of the conference and to qualify for true team state again, while keeping their losses to single digits, improving from their 60-9 record from last year.

“Our expectations are to win our section and win a state title,” Kirschner said.

Some of the Crusaders’ top performers from 2012 that will lace up again in 2013 are:

Senior Maddie McCargar led the team with 32 hits and a batting average of .464 she also had an on base percentage of .519.

Senior Jessi VanBlarcom finished second in batting aver-age with .435 and an on base percentage of .478.

Junior Katie Homan was the ace for the Crusaders. Homan led in innings pitched with 56.1, outs recorded with 169, strikeouts with 62 and an ERA of 1.74.

Junior Jordyn Strachan made an impact both at the plate and on the rubber. Stra-chan earned a .387 batting average as well as a .479 on base percentage from the plate. She was also the number two on the pitching staff, pitching 48.1 innings, recording 145 out and striking out 36 batters.

Junior Jordyn Theuninck

produced a .387 batting average while leading the team with an on base percentage of .558.

Kirschner provides her team with an offseason working program but prefers that her players are multi-sport athletes.

“I prefer my athletes to have many activities that they are apart of because it makes them a more well-rounded individu-al,” Kirschner said.

Kirschner was the assistant coach for the Crusaders for 11 years before taking over the head coaching duties two years ago.

Besides throwing in an occasional, “surprise fun practice,” to assure the girls are having fun, Kirschner emphasizes the importance of growing as an individuals, fundamentals of the game and learning a lot about life through softball and their other activi-ties.

There’s no doubt that the Crusaders will make a solid impression in the Valley con-ference during the 2013 season.

LCWM's young talent looks to up their performance from the 2012 season

The Knights softball struggled in 2012, but 2013 is a new year and Lake Crystal's young talent hopes to propel them to higher ground.

GAC T&F continued from 4ships for pole vault. She took

ninth place, finishing just one spot away from receiving all-

american honors.Bahr expects these athletes to

be factors in the Outdoor season

as well. With the number of throw-

ing events increasing with the outdoor format, this will be an advantage to the Gusties who are a strong team in throwing events. The Gusties will also add some athletes that were occupied with winter sports to the outdoor track team. Bahr expects these changes to help improve the team.

“I think every year we kind of set the standard that we want to be one of the top three teams of the conference every year, both on the men’s and the women’s side. I think that’s achievable,” Barh said. “We are definitely looking a lot stronger outdoors then we did indoors.”

The Gusties have a mixture of veteran and young athletes. Gustavus’ top athletes at pole vault are seniors, but in general the Gusties will return many of the athletes on the team next year.

“We are young with a couple seniors sprinkled in,” Bahr said. “It is always nice to have a se-nior group to lead some of those younger ones to show them what is happening.”

In general, the Gusties are a fairly young team and expect many of the athletes to be re-turning next year.

“I look to have a good return-ing class for next year and by all indications that looks like they will be a very helpful class for us,” Bahr said.

The Gusties will head south to kick off the outdoor season this weekend at the Wartburg Select, which is being held April 5-6 in Waverly, Iowa. Following the Wartburg Select the Gusties will host the Lee Krough Invita-tional April 13.

The Lake Crystal-Well-come Memorial Knights finished their 2012 softball season with a 8-10 overall record, 5-5 in the Valley conference.

In 2012, the Knights pitching staff allowed 109 runs on 139 hits, while offensively the Knights scored 204 runs on 227 hits with a .401 team batting average.

Head coach Kari Schwartz expressed her gratitude towards the Lake Crystal community for having weight lifting and conditioning programs in the summer that prepares her players for the upcom-ing season.

Although there are many girls expected to perform this season, there are two in particular. Sophomore McKenzie Schaffer who led the 2012 team with a .525 batting average and 32 hits. Sophomore Baily Rustman, who contributed a .393 batting average and 24 hits for LCWM, is expected to be a big part of LCWM’s pitching staff this upcom-ing season.

“Replacing my seniors from last year at pitcher, catcher and third base are among our biggest chal-lenges this upcoming sea-son,” Schwartz said.

2012 senior Heather Ho-henstein led the Knights’ pitching staff with 62 strikeouts and her record of 7-7, six of them being

complete games. Hohen-stein also contributed a batting average of .361, 22 hits and a team-high 29 runs scored.

Another player who will not return this upcoming season is Taylor Nelson who earned a .393 batting average adding 24 hits and 17 RBIs for LCWM.

LCWM will also miss the bat of Lindsey Ziegler, who contributed a .346 batting average, 18 hits and 10 RBIs for the Knights in 2012.

LCWM’s younger play-ers will have some big shoes to fill, but Schwartz remains optimistic and expects a successful 12th season as head coach.

Despite a slow start for the Bethany Lutheran baseball team in their 2013 campaign, the Vikings look to turn that around and finish strong like they did in 2012.

To Ryan Kragh, who is entering his ninth season as the Viking’s head coach, last season built some momentum for his team in 2013.

“I thought last season was an up and down season. We started off slow and then built some momentum, but in the end we just didn't improve enough to get the job done at the end of the year,” Coach Kragh said.

The Vikings finished their 2012 season with a 22-17 over-all record and 14-5 conference record giving them the no. 2 seed in the UMAC Tourna-ment. After defeating North-western College 9-0 in game 1, the Vikings took on the no. 1 seeded St. Scholastica and lost 10-8 for their first loss in postseason. Before they had a chance to play in the UMAC Championship, they couldn’t find a W against Northwestern, losing 4-0, and ended their season.

With a team ERA of 4.75, the Vikings were led by senior

right-hander Garrett Benson with a team-leading seven wins with a 2.54 ERA in 10 starts. Benson also supplied 50 strikeouts while only walking nine batters.

Offensively, the Vikings finished the season with a .300 team batting average with some speed in the lineup. With a lack of power, the squad likes to manufacture runs in any way they can as they finished the season with 21 sacrifice flies and 35 sacrifice hits.

“We have to play a small ball game. We like to bunt, move guys over and score runs when we can. We are going to rely on that more here as the season progresses,” Coach Kragh said.

With eight seniors gradua-ing last season, a big chunk of their offensive production has left the campus, but according to Coach Kragh there are still some bats to look out for.

“Some of the guys to watch out for would be Cory Ferm from Iowa Central, Lucas Herd from Sibley East and Adam Geiger from Mankato East,” Coach Kragh said.

Sophomore outfielder Lucas Herd is bringing back his high batting average of .370 and his ability to bring in runs with his 27 RBIs last season. Herd also provides a knack of covering

the outfield and stealing bases, while his fellow sophomore Adam Geiger batted .311 with three home runs and 35 RBIs last season.

The 2013 Vikings aren’t off to the greatest start, sit-ting at 4-10, but all it takes is for a little win streak to keep the season alive, especially when the UMAC Tournament comes around. That’s the only weekend circled on this team’s calendar.

“I think the only one games we have circled would be the UMAC tourney and making it to the weekend and play-ing our best baseball to give us a chance to go the NCAA regional,” Coach Kragh said.

As mentioned before, the pitching staff of the Vikings can keep this season alive, but the offense is what needs to get going.

“I think some of the strengths will be our pitching depth and talent on the mound. We have some guys that can really compete, and we have flexible guys that can pitch in many different roles. Weak-ness will be lack of offensive output,” Coach Kragh said. “We have some talented kids, but we just need to find a way to be more consistent.”

tants organize different team building activities each year based on the team’s personal-ity.

“This year’s team has bonded well with one another. They like to have fun, lay back and enjoy the sport of fast pitch,” Schwartz said.

But it’s not all fun in games in the Valley conference. Some teams are consistently coached and remain rivals of the Knights.

“Maple River and Martin County West are very good teams and field a competitive team each year,” Schwartz said

After assisting the Knights for three years and now ap-proaching her 12th year of

head coaching duties, Schwartz shared her passion for position.

“The sport of fast pitch softball has and perhaps always will be a passion for me. My motivation is the lasting impression that the student ath-letes leave with me each year. The laughs, sweat and tears that are poured out onto the softball diamond are priceless,” Schwartz said.

Full of optimism for the up-coming season at the end of the day Schwartz hopes that, “the weather will be cooperative.”

New Ulm looks to get over section title hump in 2013 campaign

ADAM PIERSONstaff writer

The New Ulm Eagles base-ball team hopes to keep their sights on state, a goal they have barely missed the past three seasons.

“The players are very excited about the upcoming season and look forward to a run at both the conference and section champi-onship,” head coach Jay Becker said.

“Our biggest rivals are Fairmont and Marshall. We have met Fairmont in the section finals the past three seasons,” Becker said.

The Eagles earned a 19-7 re-cord in the 2012 season, three of those losses from Fairmont and one of them from Marshall.

The Eagles have a few key contributors returning from last year’s team, who tied with Fairmont both producing a 9-1 record in the South Central

Conference. Junior Judd Davis, the Eagle’s

shortstop will be playing his third year on varsity.

“Davis is a solid shortstop as well as a very disciplined hitter at the plate,” Becker said.

Besides Davis, the Eagles will have two of their top pitch-ers on the mound for the 2013 season.

Junior Chase Meyer was one of the Eagle’s top pitchers in 2012 and also roamed the outfield for New Ulm.

The Eagles ace of the pitch-ing staff for 2012, junior Tanner Kluis will also return to the team. Kluis also plays second base when he isn’t working off the mound.

The Eagles scored a total of 133 runs in 2012, never being shut out by their opponent. On the other hand, New Ulm only allowed 67 runs while shutting out their foes six times.

“We play a very tough non-

conference schedule. The SCC favorite will be Fairmont. New Ulm, St. Peter and St. James will also be in the hunt,” Becker said.

Despite playing Fairmont, Marshall, St. James and St. Peter this upcoming year for a com-bined total of seven games, New Ulm remains optimistic.

Becker who has only coached the Eagles for seven years described his team as “very competitive.”

After the loss in the 2012 section finals all of the Eagles are motivated to reach the sec-tion finals again this upcoming season.

New Ulm’s winning percent-age of 73 percent in the 2012 season is a good place to start but the Eagles have their sights on a more successful season ahead. Between experienced players and a coach who knows the organization very well, New Ulm is set to be a front-runner of the SCC.

With the help of returning golfers, The Mankato West High School boy’s golf team expects to be competitive in the Big Nine conference this season.

The Scarlets lost three seniors to graduation, but the team will return some of their top golfers from last year. The second year Head Coach Jon Anderson will look to improve on last year with the help of the returning players.

“We have a legitimate shot to be really competitive both in our conference and also in our sec-tion this year,” Anderson said.

The Scarlets no. 1 guy is junior Matt Newman who has used his short game and ability to hit the ball far to be successful, Anderson said.

“Matt is a great student of the game. He is a hard worker and plays every single day,” Anderson said. “He just has a great all-around game.”

Galt Goettl played as a no. 1 golfer on the team last year and was one of the top hockey players in the state this year, but getting injured during the hockey season that required him getting knee surgery. Anderson expects him to back and be contributing on the team during “crunch time” in May.

“Goutll optimizes the integrity of the game. He is a strong kid with a great swing,” Anderson said.

Newman and Goutll are look-ing to be the Scarlet’s top golfers after they both made it to the

second day of sections and will look to improve on that this year. Anderson expects both of them to do well in sections again and anticipates the team to make it farther into sections this year.

Senior Sam Blackman is part of a family with a storied history in Mankato West golf, both his dad and uncle were top players for the Scarlets in the past and he is continuing on the tradition.

Mankato West High School has a lot of young golfers com-peting for a spot on the team. Some of the younger players have a lot of talent and were success-ful on the junior varsity team last year as the team went undefeated in 2012.

“We have a number of ninth and 10th graders with great swings,” Anderson said. “West golf is going to be good for years to come.”

Mankato West is in the sec-tion 2 AAA and will compete against much bigger schools like Burnsville Lakeville South and Eden Prairie. It can be challeng-ing for Mankato West to compete against much bigger programs, but the team has a lot of young talent on the rise which will help the Scarlets remain competitive in the tough conference in the future.

With less than two weeks until the Scarlets’ first meet the team have not had many chances to get on a golf course. The Scarlets’ first golf meet will be the Mar-shal invite, April 15. The weather has limited the team to practicing mostly inside, but Anderson has kept his team busy practicing

what they can to prepare. “They have a really nice fit-

ness center at West High School and we have been working really hard over there. We have been doing some practice of putting and short-game,” Anderson said. “Rules are always really impor-tant, so we have been doing rules and those kinds of things.”

Using the golf simulator at Fore Seasons Golf, a golf shop in Mankato, is another way the team will practice when they are not on the course. Using a golf simu-lator allows you to collect and analyze data such as the flight of your golf ball, club-head-speed and ball-speed.

“We spend a lot of time at Fore Seasons Golf,” Anderson said. “They have a golf simula-tor there so we can take some swings and get feedback that way as well.”

The Scarletts also practice at the Mankato Golf Club. The team has not been able to get on the course as early compared to past years but will take advantage of the local course as much as possible.

Golf is a lifetime sport and Anderson wants his kids to de-velop a love and passion for this sport that they keep their entire life. Golf is also a sport played by people with a lot of integrity which is an important part of the game for the kids to learn, Anderson said.

“What it makes me is kind of like a care taker of the sport,” Anderson said.” It is a gentle-man’s game. I try to teach that to these kids.”

Scarlets hope to bounce back from 6-16 mark in 2013JOEY DENTONstaff writerWhile last season was a down

year for the Scarlets of Mankato West, the team found a group of young talent to follow for not only this season but the next one as well.

Even though there isn’t much to say for a 6-16 record and finishing in the bottom third of the confer-ence, the Scarlets built some mo-mentum with a few good wins late in the season and one in sections. In their first postseason game, the squad faced Waconia and argu-ably the best pitcher in the state in Dalton Sawyer, who’s now wearing a Gophers uniform. Despite his 1.03 ERA, the Scarlets got two runs to cross the plate for a 2-1 victory in extra innings.

The Scarlets would lose their next playoff game to Chaska to end their 2012 season but then their 2013 campaign started right there. With a lot of young talent, Head Coach Ethan Anderson knows they have something to build off of.

“We’re really hoping to build off that experience we gained last year with some of those younger play-ers playing in our lineup,” Coach Anderson.

One of those youngsters is the ace of the squad in sophomore pitcher Ryan Schlichte. As a fresh-man, Schlichte posted a 1.35 ERA in 51.67 innings with a team-lead-ing 53 strikeouts.

On the field the Scarlets possess

two leaders in senior infielder/pitcher Ian Schwickert and junior outfielder Tyler Stoffel. As they both can provide defensive skills on the field, they also can provide some pop in the lineup. To go along with his .269 batting average, Sch-wickert finished second on team in RBIs with eight and was one of the two Scarlets to homer in the season. In his 52 at-bats, Stoffel batted .288 with five RBIs as he led the team with seven doubles.

Schwickert also provided some quality innings on the mound for the Scarlets. After pitching 9.33 innings and only giving up two earned runs on the season, the senior committed to pitch for Iowa Western next year.

Even as the squad is still pretty young, Coach Anderson is glad he possesses baseball players who can compete at the varsity level while they are young.

“Our biggest strength was the fact that we had some younger players that were physical enough and skilled enough to play as young players and hopefully that experi-ence to build off that this year and next year,” Coach Anderson said.

Looking in to this season, Coach Anderson loves the fact he has a good number of players with the same skills and can push each other for the starting spots throughout the season. And while they compete with each other, the plan is to create team chemistry and the combina-tion can make havoc in the Big

Nine. With the weather pushing the

games back, it will bunch up the games and to have a good number of quality pitchers it will play in the Scarlets’ favor later on in the season.

As the team had a .319 On-base percentage, the Scarlets had troubles getting on base, but when they did they could move runners over. Coach Anderson believes this squad has some speed as the team stole 45 bases in 22 games last season.

After getting spoiled with sum-mer weather in April last season, it’s back to normal this season with crappy weather not giving the Scarlets much of an opportunity to work on defense outside, making it difficult to know how the defense will show on game one.

In the Big Nine Conference there isn’t a real team you can take lightly and Coach Anderson knows that.

“We play a pretty tough sched-ule throughout our conference. There are no real easy games to play,” Coach Anderson.

With weather permitting, the Scarlets have their first game of their 2013 campaign with a confer-ence game against Owatonna on April 9 at 5 p.m. The much antici-pated crosstown rivalry takes place on April 19 at Franklin Rogers Park at 4:30 p.m. and they meet each other again at Mankato East High School May 16 at 4 p.m.Photo by SPX Sports

Mankato East looks for a trip back to the state tourney

The Cougars softball team has made it to the state tournament a few times in the past, but East will not let their season end in the third place game again in 2013.

JOEY DENTONstaff writer

After being just one win away from the state cham-pionship last season, the Mankato East softball team is looking to not only return but finally crack the third-place curse with a big portion of the squad returning for more.

In the Class AAA semifi-nals, the 25-5 Cougars took on the eventual state cham-pion Stillwater Ponies and it was quite a game but not the ending the way the Cougars were looking for.

With the score knotted up at two, Stillwater finally had enough and put up four runs in the top of the 11th and the Cougars couldn’t respond, ending their season with a 6-2 loss. The Cougars went on to play for third place for the third straight season.

The 2012 season is done. It’s history. It’s a new year with new goals and aspira-tions and a new main pitcher. After pitcher Coley Ries left a legacy at East High School, it’s time for someone to step

up and take the reins and that can be Megan Ulrich.

“I think Megan is ready to take the main load,” Head Coach Joe Madson said.

Pitching will be done more of by committee but after what Ulrich did in 2012 proves she will be the number one starter for the Cougars. In her 22 innings of work, Ulrich fanned 20 batters and finished the sea-son with a 3.27 earned-run average. Madson also noted sophomore Nicole Rasmussen and eighth-grader Morgan Keim-Wolfe will be seeing some time in the circle.

With Ulrich, or whoever is pitching, defense is going to play an even bigger key to their success and last sea-son’s number one starter in now MSU pitcher Coley Ries was a big strikeout pitcher and this season the ball will be put in to play more often, which isn’t a concern for Madson.

“That’s what I think sometimes became an issue for us last year was that the ball was put in to play so

solemn it became such a big deal that you got a ball that sometimes there was all this pressure on you,” Madson said. “I don’t think that will be the case this year. We will be more relaxed and ready to make plays.”

The Cougars possess four seniors who bring their all every day and were named the four team captains. Third baseman Jordan Kuster will bat either third or fourth in the lineup and that’s well earned after batting .326 with seven doubles and two triples last season.

The other senior infielder who will be batting in the heart of the order is shortstop Savannah Quandt. In 2012, she posted a .420 batting average including 15 doubles, two triples and eight home runs.

After this season Quandt will be getting ready for her next athletic stage in her life with a full ride scholarship to Minnesota State University, Mankato to play for Coach

MSU keeps tradition alive with strong start to 2013

The Mavericks softball team has been a powerhouse in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in recent memory. The Mavs could not find their

game late last season, but hope the new year brings new promises.

JOEY DENTONstaff writer

After the 2012 season Minnesota State University, Mankato’s softball team finished with an overall record of 49-10, 23-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. MSU fell short 3-1 to Concordia Univer-sity’s Golden Bears in the NCAA Central Sub-Region finals last May.

“It left a taste of unfin-ished business with this team. Reminding us that we have to show up and play ev-ery game as everyone wants to beat MSU Mankato,” head coach Lori Meyer said.

MSU wasted no time starting their 2013 season, as the Mavericks currently have a 20-6 record, 5-1 in the NSIC.

Since last season, MSU has added game changing players in freshman pitcher Coley Ries and transfer student from North Da-kota State University, junior middle infielder Samantha Hollen, to their lineup. Ries currently holds a 5-1 record and a 2.42 ERA and Hol-len and holds a .351 batting average with seven bombs thus far.

“The preseason part of our schedule was strong es-

pecially the NFCA Leadoff Classic because it prepared us for our last 14 games. The last 14 games have prepared us for the final 24 games of our NSIC schedule,” Meyer said.

“Our goal is to play con-sistent softball, win the reg-ular season NSIC and return to the NSIC tournament and post season,” Meyer said.

MSU sees an optimistic future with the help of some of their seasoned veterans.

Senior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue has a record of 11-4 and recently threw a five-inning perfect game. McKelvogue’s impact on MSU’s pitching staff has been apparent for the past three years.

Shortstop Senior Abby Sonner has earned a .363 batting average and 29 hits thus far.

“Sonner is consistent on defense and has a quick release,” Meyer said.

Junior catcher Lindsay Erickson also plays third base and first base has been a big asset for MSU the previous two years. Erickson currently has a .464 batting average and leads the team with 32 hits.

Junior Kelly Wood who also plays catcher, third base and first base has also been

a big part of MSU’s suc-cess over the last two years. Wood currently holds a .329 batting average.

“Wood has a quick trans-fer, good feet, frames well and has a consistent glove,” Meyer said.

MSU follows an intense workout program to achieve this kind of production and does things like the ropes course for building team chemistry during the offsea-son.

MSU has a strong work ethic, positive attitude and mental toughness according to Meyer. These key compo-nents will help MSU succeed throughout the 50 plus game schedule.

“Our biggest rivals are Augustana, University of Minnesota Duluth, Winona and University of Mary because they are good teams and always challenge us,” Meyer said.

Meyer, who has coached MSU for 29 years, advises her players to pay attention to detail, take care of the small things, control what you can control and most importantly, learn the game.

With a commanding start to their 2013 season the Mavericks look forward to a successful postseason push.

BLC Vikings aim for top-half of UMAC in 2013

The Bethany Lutheran College softball team already has almost as many wins

this season as they did last, meaning the Vikings and head coach Renee Tatge

could see themselves moving out of the bot-tom-half of the UMAC once and for all.

REECE HEMMESCHsports editor

In the wide world of sports, you are either on the up or on the down. As for the Bethany Lutheran College softball team; they are hoping to be in the up category after a cruel 2012 in which the Vikings finished 14-25.

Surprisingly, even though it is still quite early in the softball season, BLC has been looking improved over the first por-tion of their season, sitting at a 10-10 record with a 3-0 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference record through their first 20 games.

The record standpoint is an improvement in itself, consider-ing the Vikings only won 10 UMAC matchups last season, seven more than they already have this season.

The 2013 Vikings have four returning starters from last year’s squad. Where these play-ers lack in depth, they make up in experience and skill.

Last season’s squad has two returning players with all-con-

ference honors as underclass-men: senior shortstop Ashley Jensen and junior outfielder Gena Chester.

In her junior campaign, Jensen led all Viking hitters in batting average (.375) while registering 80 at bats for 30 hits, including seven doubles, a triple, a homerun and 13 RBIs.

Chester was equally as bril-liant in just her sophomore year last season, registering a .317 batting average and leading the team in runs scored (24), doubles (12) and hits (40).

As impressive as they were the year before, Jensen and Chester are also making great strides early in 2013 as well. So far, Chester sits second among Viking hitters with a .381 bat-ting average along with seven doubles and a triple. Jensen also is among the tops in batting average, hitting .339 through their first 20 games.

Offensively, BLC finds hits galore from junior Nicole Starkson, registering 26 hits, eight doubles, three homeruns

GAC hopes mix of upperclassmen and youth will yearn results

2012 wasn't what head coach Mike Carroll and the Gustavus Adolphus baseball team had in mind, but Carroll knows his squad and believes he has a winning formula for 2013.

TIM FAKLISstaff writer

A year can make a world of difference in sports. Whether it’s a change of player personnel, a change of coaching personnel, or simply gained experience by every-one involved, change for the better is always something a team can look forward to when a new season arises. That’s what Gustavus Adol-phus College baseball coach Mike Carroll and his team are hoping to accomplish this season.

A year ago, the Gusties finished with a record of 16-19, and in their minds, did not accomplish what they had set out for. They finished in ninth place in the Minnesota In-tercollegiate Athletic Conference, a step down from the fifth place finish the year prior.

Boyden Lee, a senior from a season ago, led the team in hitting with an impressive .400 batting average, but it was a then-junior Drew Block who perhaps had the best all-around season for Gustavus. His .352 batting average, along with his 5 triples, 3 home runs, and 22 RBI, were all good for top rankings on his team, leading the club in triples, home runs, and runs batted in, finishing fourth in batting average.

On the mound, then-junior Grant Soderberg led the way for an overall shaky pitching staff. In 51.1 innings pitched, Soderberg was able to compile a 3-5 record with a 2.73 earned run average. Only

one pitcher was able to compile a winning record – Tom Jaede, who garnered a 3-0 record in only 9.1 innings pitched.

Coach Carroll sites double headers as a key to their problems from a year ago.

“We struggled to stay focused for both games of the doublehead-ers.” Carroll said.

This year, with senior center fielder/pitcher Tim Miller, senior first baseman Block, sophomore pitcher Grant Soderberg, Connor Norris and Max Laurenao leading the way, they’re looking to make big strides from a year ago, in an effort to return to the winning ways they experienced in the early-to-mid 2000’s.

This year’s team is a young one by anyone’s standards, any way you look at it. With only three seniors, six juniors, matched with 10 sophomores and eight freshmen, this team has all the makings for some ups and downs, but the idea of fresh legs and a new crop of players can be both frightening and excting for a coaching staff, some-thing that doesn’t come around all too often in college athletics, in terms of the extreme level of youth.

There are ways to work with youth, and Coach Carroll plans to use his upper classmen as a tool to help the young players. He has very laid out plans for exactly what he wants to see to make those wishes become a very speedy and timely reality.

“(They) help lead the way for a

young team,” Carroll said. “Situ-ational hitting, improved base run-ning, pitchers pounding the strike zone, making the routine play in the field.”

While this may seem like fairly standard fundamentals of the game, honing in on those skills can make all the difference, not just in individual play, but in the

win-loss column as well. Even with a young group of players, there is still a core of upper classmen who have played together for a number of years now, and his displayed the ability to succeed at the MIAC level. While much will rely on their ability to produce on the field, a good portion of their responsi-bility will also come from their

attitude and work ethic as well. “Develop a winning attitude

with a young club,” Carroll said. “To put your work in, become more of a student of the game. Embrace the pressure of winning and to not be afraid to take risks, because the ones who do, usually see big rewards.”

The Gustavus Adolphus soft-ball team didn’t have the start they wanted in their 2013 season, but there is still a lot of season left for the Gusties.

Last season, the Gusties finished out the season with a 34-9 overall record and 20-2 in the MIAC, which gave them second place in the conference. In the MIAC Playoffs, the squad took their first game 7-2 over Augsburg College. Later that day,

they found their first loss of the double-elimination tournament to St. Thomas 9-0. After eliminating Saint Mary’s University 7-1 the next day, the Gusties found them-selves in the MIAC Championship against St. Thomas.

In game one, the Gusties found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning, but they would rally back in the top of the second, scoring four runs. St. Thomas would score another run in the fourth, but that’s all they can come up with and the Gusties took game one 5-2. With both teams still sitting

with one loss, the two squads would play one more game to find out the victor and it was St. Thomas. The Gusties couldn’t get anything going as they only got one hit and committed four errors in the 8-0 loss.

With only two seniors on the 2012 club, the Gusties return most of the roster, but it’s still a relatively young group as there are six freshmen, eight sophomores, four juniors and only three seniors sitting on the roster. Senior utility

BLC SOFTBALL continued from 14

and 17 RBIs early on in the season. But Starkson is not one to just hit the ball, she can also fire it across the plate as well, recording a 2.08 ERA so far in 2013 with six wins, two shutouts and 75 strikeouts.

The Vikings and head coach Renee Tatge usually work on a two-woman rotation, leav-ing the remaining games to be decided by junior Shannon Heitz, who has accumulated a 4-6 record and a 4.81 ERA in 10 pitching appearances.

BLC’s 2013 campaign began in late February where the Vikings started out with four non-conference in-state matchups with St. Catherine and Macalester, splitting with St. Catherine and sweeping the latter by scores of 10-3 and 5-3.

From there, Bethany headed to Fort Myers, Fla. over break to compete in their own spring training, where the Vikings played eight games in five days, splitting the competition with four wins and four losses.

After returning to Min-

nesota, the Vikings dropped consecutive series’ with Presen-tation College and Finlandia. The pitching was just not there in those four matchups as BLC let up 37 runs in the process.

It looked rocky for the Vikings early on, but once BLC got their UMAC season under-way, this season’s squad began to take its shape.

Their rough, UMAC sched-ule began Apr. 5th when BLC headed to New Ulm to take on Martin Luther in their first conference matchup, defeating MLC 4-1 to start them off with a 1-0 conference record. Heitz would get the victory in this one, going the distance for the Vikings while giving up no hits in the process, striking out six and walking four.

From there BLC headed back to Mankato for their home opener on their own campus, destroying UMAC-foe Crown College 10-0 and 8-0, both in five innings.

Jensen and Chester, who both tallied two hits in game

one and combined for four runs manufactured, led the offensive explosion in the trouncing of Crown. Starkson would get her sixth win of the season, firing a two-hit shutout in her five in-nings of work.

Game two was once again a team effort at the plate for the Vikings, who benefited from six hits including two doubles and two runs scored by Stark-son to earn the victory. Heitz was once again brilliant on the hill, giving up just one hit in five innings and keeping her walk total low with two base on balls.

Now the Vikings will ride their conference schedule for the next month until it is time for the UMAC conference tour-nament, which will be held the first weekend in May.

With a 3-0 start to their conference record and things looking up at every turn for BLC, only time will tell where this team will end up come the end of the season.

“It seems that all teams in the SCC will be better this year.”

That is fun for any fan, coach, player, or student to hear. Improved competition is hard to come by in an entire conference, especially when the defending state champion sits in that con-ference. The New Ulm softball program was able to put together a fantastic run in the South Cen-tral Conference, winning it, their section, and then proceeding to win the state championship a year ago.

They are not the only competitors in the conference, however. The South Central Conference for softball saw a good amount of competition in 2012.

“New Ulm always has tal-ent and will be the conference favorite again. I feel Waseca has a lot of kids back, and Abby Collins is one of the better pitch-ers in our conference,” St. Peter High School head Softball coach Bill Herr said, whose team fin-ished second in a very competi-tive South Central Conference. “It seems that all teams in the SCC will be better this year.”

Coach Herr’s team did quite well last season, finishing second in the conference, and while losing both bouts with

the state champion New Ulm squad. While they did end up on the short end of the bouts, they played them close on both occa-sions. He has high expectations for his team this season, despite losing a few key players.

“We always want to be in contention in our conference and section. If we can get a few question marks solidified, then I think this can happen,” Herr said in preparation of this season. “We appear to have a mix of seniors with experience and younger players that are tal-ented, but need to play up a level they haven't played at yet. We are excited about our prospects.”

There will be a high level of competition between all schools in the conference, despite the dominance displayed fairly thoroughly by New Ulm; there are a plethora of other schools that will be looking to dethrone them this season. Blue Earth, Waseca, Fairmont, St. Peter, and St. James will all attempt to be in the hunt this year, as a new chapter of softball hits this spring in southern Minnesota.

Herr has a couple very clear ideas of what he wants from his team this season.

“We are emphasizing hard work, team chemistry, and communication,” Herr said, while also preaching an ability to enjoy yourself in the process.

“Team first, play for each other, enjoy the time in the sun.”

While he was mainly just speaking for his group, there is little-to-no doubt that that type of mentality that any coach in the conference would hope to instill in their players. It’s definitely one that New Ulm was able to put into their program, and something that the rest of the conference is going to work hard towards achieving this year.

After New Ulm and St. Peter, Waseca finished in third in the conference, with Fairmont and St. James finishing in that order behind them. Blue Earth Area High School was the only school in the conference to not pick up a win in conference play, finish-ing with an 0-7 mark in confer-ence play, and a 2-13 record overall.

With input from the coaches, as well as looking at potential rosters for a year from now, the playing field seems more even than a year ago, and that isn’t because of player depar-tures. The teams are stronger, more experienced, and ready to get the season underway. The conference that features the state champs from a year ago will always be looked on as a presti-gious one, and that won’t change this year.

Have a healthy, successful spring season!

Eric Means and the women’s hockey team.

As those two anchor the batting order, Coach Madson knows this squad will be hard to get out throughout the year.

“I think we have kids who will be tough at-bats and should be fairly produc-tive offensively for the most part,” Madson said.

With Ulrich named as one of the captains, the fourth captain will be second base-man Carolyn Osdoba, who batted .270 in the no. 2 slot last season. Coach Madson believes he selected four true leaders for this season.

“Those four seniors will be our four leaders for sure,” Madson said.

With the weather permit-ting, the Cougars will start their 2013 campaign at home against Rochester Mayo on April 9. This year the Cougars will be hosting an invitational on the weekend of April 26-28 with mul-tiple teams in the Big Nine participating. As the Cougars have taken the regular season conference title the last two seasons, their crosstown ri-vals Mankato West has taken the three previous titles and the two go at it on May 7 at 5 p.m. at Mankato East.

EAST SOFTBALL “After be-ing just one win away from the state championship last season, the Mankato East softball team is look-ing to crack the third place curse with a big portion of the squad re-turning for more.”

GOOD LUCK ATHLETES!

Loyola hopes to take high competition level into new conference

The Mankato Loyola baseball team saw great success in recent history in the Gopher Conference, now it is time for the Crusaders to show

what they got in their first year in the Valley Conference.

TIM FAKLISstaff writer

The Mankato Loyola Catho-lic School Crusaders baseball team is a program that showed lots of promise a year ago. Under the tutelage of head coach John Landkamer and the rest of his coaching staff, the Crusad-ers were able to put together an impressive run in the Valley Conference, finishing with a solid 11-2 record in the confer-ence, as well as a 16-6 record overall.

They were just a half game away from getting the confer-ence title crown, but still were able to earn a top seed in the section 2A playoffs, eventually losing a two-game set to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial High School in the final.

Keep in mind; this is a school with only about 650 students K-12. That in itself, considering their success as a high school baseball program, is impressive.

Returning is a strong group of players, including senior infielder/pitcher Evan Elling-worth and fellow seniors Blake Matuska, Andrew Sweere and Kyle Reynolds. Also returning is junior pitcher Mark Kortuem, infielder Carson Seifert and two-time all-conference catcher Shane Sellner.

One player that graduated a year ago, that they will surely and sorely miss did the major-ity of his damage on the mound in pitcher Zach Mullin. The all-state arm will be one that will be hard to replace, as they relied on him for much of the season to keep opposing runs to a minimum.

His ability to strike batters out made life much easier for skill players in the field, and the plan, as of right now, is to run somewhat of a pitcher-by-associ-ation method in the meantime.

They’ll rely quite a bit on Evan Ellingworth, as well as a plethora of other players, and may have to dig into the depths of their youth for some help on the mound.

A season ago, they were bare-ly able to keep New Richland off of their heels, a school that stayed with them for the entirety of the season.

One thing that most schools and coaches won’t have to deal with this season, or any other season really, is the changing of conferences. The Mankato Loyola Crusaders will be doing just that, when they make their move from the Gopher Confer-ence to the Valley Conference.

Instead of playing against Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, New Richland-Hartland-Ellen-

dale-Geneva or United South Central for a conference champi-onship, Loyola will be taking on the likes of Maple River, Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and Nicollet.

Their losing to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial makes this change all the more interesting and intriguing to look at as the season progresses.

With a strong returning cast, some meaningful play-ers gone, the same coaching staff, a different conference and list of competitors to battle against, this season is one of few certainties and a lot of questions for Mankato Loyola’s baseball squad.

Sometimes, that can lead to good things. Sometimes, it can lead to positive change, but with the success that John Land-kamer and his team had a year ago, it’s hard to imagine that new blood and a lack of a star pitching will help them down the road, but it’s still hard to say at this point.

Either way, the returning cast will look forward to a new crop of competition, and the Gopher conference adding a school with as successful a season as the Crusaders had a year ago should make for good baseball.

GAC SOFTBALL continued from 16MSU golf aims for top of NSIC once again

Do something for a while and it will become routine. That is where the Minnesota State men's golf team is at in 2013, where the Mavericks

will aim for their fifth straight conference title.

Success in athletics has become a staple at Minneso-ta State University, Mankato over the years in various different sports. Over the past five years, southern Minnesota has seen nation-ally recognized athletes and teams in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, football, volleyball, track & field, and wrestling.

The MSU Men’s golf program, and their head coach Geoffrey Klein, are no exception to what has essentially become a rule of principle in Mankato.

Four straight NSIC cham-pionships for the MSU men’s golf team is what they’re at right now, and their hopes are to continue this run.

“Our expectation every year is to win (the NSIC con-ference) tournament, which earns us an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament,” Klein said. “Our conference tournament is split with two rounds in the fall and spring. We played poorly in the fall and dug ourselves a big hole in that tournament. Our goal for the spring is to win every tournament we play, try to make up some ground in the

spring conference tourney, and take our chances get-ting an at-large bid to the NCAA's.”

Seniors for this season for the Mavericks include Greg Werner out of Farmington. Werner is the highest-ranked NSIC player in the NCAA Midwest region, and his abilities will be relied on as the season progresses.

Joining Werner in the senior class for MSU is Ben Holker, who has received high praise from the Maver-ick coaching staff.

“He has worked so hard his first three years and it’s really paid off for him this year,” Klein said of his se-nior. “I've never seen anyone improve as much as he has in just one year.”

Joining the senior class are juniors Bennett Black, Tyler Gross, Jeff Kohl, sophomores Rob Kraft and Ross Miller and freshmen Jason Edstrom, Michael Greenberg, and Corey Muen-zhuber.

The season, as mentioned, is split up into two separate sections: the fall and the spring, but is all considered to be one year-long event.

No events this season will be held in Mankato. St. Cloud State, Augustana, and

Bemidji State are just a few NSIC opponents that will be hosting, or have hosted, an event this season.

To get to a point where the Mavericks plan to get to, which is a bid to the NCAA tournament, Klein has a set of plans in store to get just that done.

“Our focus is always to be great in the short game, chipping and putting, be-cause that covers up a lot of warts on a day where the long game isn't good,” Klein said. “It makes you able to shoot consistent scores under pressure.”

Pressure doesn’t just come when you’re on the green or teeing off, however. Lately, the pressure of being an ath-lete at MSU, a golfer being a prime example, can have pressures of its own, and they’re pressures that can lead to high praise and suc-cess, or disappointment.

If history is any indicator, coach Klein and his team should be up to the chal-lenge, and with the chang-ing of seasons, even more things are looking up for the Mavericks.

“Soon the golf course opens up, so we will be able to get some real practice done.”

Kate Rentschler brings back a powerful bat and ended the season batting .329 with a team-leading six home runs and also 19 RBIs.

Another batter to watch out for is sophomore infielder Lisa Klass. As a freshman in 2012, the Rich-field native posted a team-best .393 batting average to go with her five home runs and 26 RBIs. Her fellow sophomore infielder Kailey Morgan also provided some pop as a freshman with four home runs and 33 RBIS with her .292 average.

Rentschler not only provided quality at-bats for the Gusties, she also gave them quality starts in the circle. In 20 starts, the Lake-field native finished 2012 with a 1.98 ERA while striking out 85 batters and walked 53. Alongside her was sophomore pitcher Sarah Rozell. In 2012 Rozell finished with a 17-4 record and in 147 innings pitched she achieved a low 1.76 ERA while fanning 112 batters.

With a 5-10 start, the Gusties are looking for the hitting and pitching they had last season. In

the circle, both of the Gusties’ aces are having a tough time keeping earned runs off the score-board. In her first 38 innings of the season, Rentschler possesses a 6.98 ERA with 22 strikeouts and 20 walks. While Rozell hasn’t had as much of a problem of allowing runners on base with 38 strike-outs and only eight walks, she has allowed 18 earned runs in 51.1 innings of work.

Offensively the squad is bat-ting .266 as a team which is 10th in the MIAC and sits 11th in runs with 51. So far in 15 games, Rent-schler and Breneman have carried the offensive load. Rentschler car-ries a .324 batting average with six RBIs and a team-leading four doubles. Her teammate Breneman is batting. 313 and ties for the lead in RBIs with seven.

The next action for the Gusties is heading up to Macalester College April 10, then returning home the next day for a double-header with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. This sea-son the Gusties have the honor of hosting the MIAC Playoffs played here in Mankato on May 3-4.

Track and field is typically seen as an individual sport. There are few team-related events in the sport, but the team concept is still there, and the South Central conference is one that saw a fair amount of success in the sport at vari-ous different venues this year.

“The South Central Con-ference is traditionally a very strong track and field conference. Last year was no exception to this,” Anthony Ortmann said, head coach of the New Ulm track and field squad. “The conference was represented well at the State Meet as well as the True Team meet.”

The conference has seen quite a few good results, including state-recognized success in the 400 meter, 800 meter, as well as an array of different relays.

This year, there are still more athletes that spectators of this southern Minnesota conference can look forward to as track season presses on. Sean O’Connell of St. Peter’s sprinting ability is one that will be put onto display, and somebody to look for in the conference. Shane Stretch of

the Waseca track club is on the same boat in the longer events, specifically his ability to run both the 800-meter and the two-mile.

Ortmann has high expecta-tions for a few of his players as well.

“Aaron Stark (800-meter) is off to a strong start this year. He has picked up right where he left off at last season. Riley Drahota (400-meter) is one of hardest workers on the team. His work should pay off this year in the 400-meter,” Ortmann said. “Mike Dick-inson (Shot Put) made it into finals last year at the section meet. He looks to make it into the top two and advance to the state meet this season. Mike should be one of the top con-tenders for the conference this year in the shot put.”

Despite some success from some of his seniors this year, he also recognizes the issues that come with a young team.

“New Ulm is a fairly young team this season. We are look-ing for our younger athletes to improve every day and by the end of the season be able to step up and point,” Ortmann said. “We will definitely be looking to move a couple ath-letes through to the state meet this year. It will be difficult as

the section looks tough again this year.”

New Ulm isn’t the only squad looking for success from its athletes this year. Past suc-cess from St. James, St. Peter, Waseca and Fairmont showed success in several events, as well as the state meet from a season ago.

With the season about to get underway, athletes start-ing their yearly conditioning before the first few meets are all complete, and the players start to get into real shape, it marks a time that for the ath-letes to really begin to make their marks and figure out what events they’ll be running, which can be especially tough for new athletes to the sport.

One thing that needs to be done for that simple reason is for the coaches to set a certain standard for all athletes in-volved. Ortmann is no excep-tion.

“My expectations of our team is that we get better every day,” Ortmann said, looking onto his expectations for the upcoming season in New Ulm. “We need to work as hard as possible each and every day and hone in on the techniques of our events. If we can accomplish that we will have a successful season.”

in the shot put, and finished in sixth place with a throw of 13.94 meters.

Grant Leur took second place in the discus, with a throw of 50.15 meters. The first place finisher was sophomore Gabe Hull of Iowa, who threw for 56.82 meters. Reed took third place with a throw of 50.06 meters. Reed also competed in the hammer throw, and took fifth place with a throw of 46.07 meters.

The men’s team took sixth-place overall with a final score of 61.

The women’s team competed in only three throwing events. Sophomore Morgan finished in sixth place in the shot put with a throw of 11.13 meters. Junior Anna Ryan took ninth place in the discus with a throw of 36.52 meters. Both Stampley and Ryan competed in the hammer throw, with Stampley finishing in fifth place and Ryan finishing in eighth place.

The women’s team took ninth place overall with a final score of 12.

The following day, the Mav-ericks competed at the Knox College Outdoor Open in Gales-burg, Ill. The men’s team had three athletes compete while the women’s team only had one.

Christopher Reed, Bryan Keys and Grant Leur all com-peted for the Mavericks, and all placed in each event. Reed took first place in both the discus and the shot put, with a throw of 50.56 in the discus and a throw of 16.96 meters in the shot put. Leur took second place in the discus with a throw of 42.52 meters. Keys took second place in the shot put with a throw of 13.75 meters. In the hammer throw, Reed took second place with a throw of 46.14 meters, and Keys took eleventh place with a throw of 29.06 meters.

The only competitor for the women’s team was junior Anna Ryan. Ryan competed in both the hammer throw and discus. She took first place in the ham-mer throw with a toss of 41.06 meters. She also took third place in the discus with a throw of 40.46 meters.

Scarlets hope to bounce back from tough end to 2012 season

at the hands of WaconiaThe Mankato West softball team was in a great position for a postseason run last year when their season ended short in the first round of sectional play. Now that it is

2013, the Scarlets are back and looking for revenge.LUCAS RYANstaff writer

The Mankato West High School Softball team had a disappointing end to their 19-3 season last year. The team was ranked third in state but lost as a one seed in the first round of the section playoffs.

Led by by head coach Don Krusemark, the team is excited to play this year and will attempt to make a deeper run in the playoffs behind a very experi-enced lineup. The Scarlets will have eight returning seniors out of the 13 players on the roster after only one.

“We got a lot of players returning and expect to do well in both the conference and our section during playoffs,” Kruse-mark said.

The Scarletts went 13-1 in the Big 9 Conference 2012 and are expected to be a major factor within the conference in this year.

Even with the 13-1 mark in last season's Big 9 Conference, Mankato West still finished second in the conference, behind crosstown-rival Mankato East, who downed the Scarlets 3-2 in extra innings in the final game of the season to give West their first loss of the year.

East would go on to compete in the State tournament, where the Cougars took fourth in Class AAA.

The Scarlets will lean on senior first baseman Jessica Goerger to make an impact on the team offensively. Goerger hit .557, scoring 19 runs and tallying 26 RBIs last year to go along with her 15 extra base hits including four home runs.

Her dominating play was a major factor in the Scarletts get-ting the top seed in the section playoffs. She plans to continue playing softball at the colligate level and has committed to play at St. Cloud State University next year.

Returning seniors Goerger and Malorie Veroeven received all-state honors last year. After her dominating in her junior season last year, Veroeven will likely make a big impact this season as well.

Veroeven and Goerger are captains on the team but there is no shortage of leaders on this experienced squad, Krusemark said.

Pitching is one of the major

strengths for the Scarlets. With the pitching staff led by the all-state pitcher Veroeven, who is a very hard thrower, Krusemark said.

However, the Scarlets have five different pitchers that they can depend on and will try to take advantage of their deep pitching staff this year.

The Scarlets have been practicing since March 11, but have been stuck inside like many other teams in Minnesota. Krusemark is taking advantage

of the practice time inside to focus on the fundamentals and do a lot of different drills.

The team has really been focusing on the defensive side of the game. Krusemark believes in the philosophy that if they can-not score then you will not lose and is making good defense a major emphasis for the Scarlets.
