Welcome to The Andover Guide 2010 edition. Our Guide is direct mailed to every Andover Household in the spring and this year is our 5th edition. The
Guide is also available throughout the year at the Old Town Hall on Main Street and the lobby of the Andover Town Hall.
In every edition we include a local interest story and this year the Service Club of Andover is the featured community organization. The Service Club of Andover is best known for organizing the Special Field Games and enriching the lives of those with special needs and mentoring youth.
Our online site, TheAndoverGuide.com, maintains a comprehensive Business Guide which can be viewed by category. We use Google to power our Business Guide which provides our advertising clients excellent online exposure in the Andover community.

Enriching the lives of those with special needs and mentoring youth may be the stated mission of the Service Club of Andover, but they are really in the smile business.
The Service Club of Andover is best known for organizing the Special Field Games, an annual fun event that puts smiles on the faces of hundreds of special needs athletes, families and friends. The secret to the success of the Games is that “The volunteers get as much pleasure as the athletes do,” said Len D’Innocenzo, board member and past president of the Service Club, “Everybody is a winner.”
The athletes are mostly from Andover, “but they’ve come from as far away as Arizona,” Len said. After games like “soccer kick and turtle race all the participants receive medals, trophies and goodie bags. We’re always looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with the athletes, and for sponsors of individual games or the whole event,” he added. The Games are scheduled for Sept. 25th at Northern Essex Community College.
The Spring Dance is another annual event organized by the Service Club. For adults with special needs, the dance is set for April 29th at the Wyndham

Hotel. Besides dining and dancing with a professional DJ, “One of the highlights for the dancers is getting photographed, it’s very special for them,” said Len. “We used to use a Polaroid, but we couldn’t get the film anymore, so now we have a digital camera and printer. Everybody leaves with a picture.”
The Service Club’s Summer Picnic, usually held at the Park in August, is a family party with a cookout, games and a DJ.
The Service Club helps fund many community programs including the Creative Living Center in Andover, where those with developmental disabilities can learn “to live and work independently,” said Lucille Giannone, Service Club board member and one of the founders of Creative Living. Building life skills such as filling out job applications and learning household chores are all covered in a new program called C.L.I.P: the Creative Living Independence Project. In addition, Creative Living has a Social Club that brings individuals together for a meal, friendship and fun.
The “Getaway Weekends” program at Creative Living offers guests ages 18 and over an opportunity to live away from home for a weekend with their peers in a safe, supervised environment. “It’s fun for the guests to get out into the community and a great respite for caregivers,” added Lucille.
The Best Buddies program at Merrimack College is another Service Club funded project. Combining a little of both missions, helping those with special needs and mentoring youth, Best Buddies is all about “friendship between college students and special needs individuals,” said Lucille.
Not all Service Club programs are fun and games. There is a serious side to serving young people in the community. The Andover High School Mentoring Program, going on for 15 years, matches up career-minded high school juniors with local professionals working in those careers. “The students get to find out what the real world is like,” said Len. After job-shadowing the professionals, each junior writes a paper about the experience and three students are awarded $2,500 college scholarships. “We get about 50 to 60 students in the program every year, and we are always in need of more mentors,” he said.
The club also provides funding for the In Control Advance Driver Training Program, “skid school” for short, which teaches young drivers important emergency skills.
Much of the funding for these and other Service Club projects comes from the annual Fall Auction. “We raised about $60,000 last year,” said Len, “and that’s pretty good for these tough times.”
Helping to make the times less tough for the Andover community, the Service Club of Andover needs your support. Become a member, volunteer at an event, provide financial support or become a corporate sponsor. The club usually gets together twice a month for breakfast meetings at the Andover Country Club and guests are always welcome.
