HENRIK MOST Creative leader IKEA of Sweden

Music and mobility are the starting points for SPRIDD – a four-fold collection inspired by four loosely interpreted music styles.

“I think most of us have experienced the meaning of music when it comes to shaping our identities and for a sense of belonging,” says Henrik Most, Creative Leader at IKEA of Sweden.

A decade ago young people still had their home as their base. Today smartphones and other mobile devices make it easier than ever to stay in touch, and to go wherever you want to. Put together, that makes a nomadic life a perfectly reasonable choice.

“SPRIDD is our way to make everyday life easier and more fun when you live a life on the move,” says Henrik.

To collaborate with Kit Neale was an easy choice:

“Kit Neale’s designs and prints are all about youthful energy, attitude and fun. It’s been an exciting process, and we’re super happy with the outcome.” SPRIDD is part of a series of fashion collaborations and a way for IKEA to explore new territory and learn new things.

“In many ways, fashion designers create a toolbox that helps us create our own identity and how we want to be looked upon. Here we, as a furnishing company, can definitely learn a lot.”

“Everything we put out there has to have a purpose, it can’t be just a product. Fashion is very fickle, but we’re trying not to be. We’re trying to be aware. Still the purpose of our work can be as simple as that something’s pretty. We want to give beauty, enjoyment and fun in a dark world.”

The end-result isn’t the only thing that matters. The underlying research and the creative journey are part of the storytelling:

“Usually the creative process is our own selfish journey, and all about what we want to say as a business and as a brand. Now we had to take the IKEA values into account. It’s been a fun journey and hopefully the collection will be just as much fun to use.”

The part about having fun is the key to everything that’s Kit Neale.

“We want to bring smiles to people’s faces.”

Of course there are differences between working with fashion and furniture. Kit mentions one in particular:

“Interior is a lot about functionality – in fashion function is the byproduct. So we kept saying to IKEA that if we install the energy and attitude, you guys can take care of the rest.”

D Energetic, chaotic and young – that’s SPRIDD in short. “It’s been a fun journey and hopefully the collection will be just as much fun to use,” says British fashion designer Kit Neale about the collaboration and about his standout printed bags, tents and boxes (plus lots more) perfect for modern nomads.

With the IKEA collaboration Kit Neale, emerging brand on the London fashion scene, dove head first into something all new. But the idea wasn’t that far-fetched. As a matter of fact Kit and his partner and co-owner of the Kit Neale brand, Caspar Hodgson, had just discussed the possibility of a future collaboration with IKEA when the furnishing company got in touch. That beautiful coincidence is what led up to the SPRIDD collection.

The tents, bags, boxes, rugs, mugs and beanbags, as well as the rest of the vibrant must-haves, are based on four different artworks inspired by four loosely interpreted music styles. It’s eclectic, chaotic and nomadic – perfect for everyone mobile.

“SPRIDD is very ‘festival-y’ with the tents, duffel bags and flasks, and then there are the boxes for moving away to college or wherever. You can just pick them up and chuck them in the car, on the bus, the train or the plane. This is a collection to be moved,” says Kit.“It’s inspired by youth culture and by what it means to be young. Youth is a chaotic period in people’s lives, and maybe the most important. It sets us up for life.”

It’s the surprises in the textures and in the scale of objects and prints that Kit himself loves most about SPRIDD.

“There are many details that you don’t notice until you take a closer look – like the rubbery parts on a cushion or the scale of a big fish on a duvet cover. There is a lot to discover. The collection still surprises me, in fact.”
