Ata Rangi dates to 1980 when Clive Paton planted his first vines. He released his first wines in 1985, but he struggled mightily early on, growing pumpkins and garlic to help meet financial demands. With the contributions of Paton’s winemaker wife, Phyll Pattie, and highly educated winemaker Oliver Masters who is married to Paton’s sister, Alison, the foursome brought Ata Rangi worldwide recognition, winning the Bouchard- Finlayson Trophy from the United Kingdom International Wine and Spirit Competition three times. Ata Rangi produces a complete line of wines, but Pinot Noir is the star here.

Terry Peabody and his family searched for ten years to find the place and the people that could fulfil a dream – that they could make some of the best wine in the world. It was this notion of legacy – to create something greater than the here and now – that led Terry Peabody in 1997 to Steve Smith and to the development of Craggy Range. Together they set a plan to buy the best vineyard land, select parcels of grapes grown by the country’s best farmers, and to choose a place for their homes, cellars and country restaurant. Their aim was to make single-vineyard wines – wines that are true expressions of the vineyard’s terroir. And an ambition to make the greatest wines in the land. No small goal and one that is not achieved without considerable effort.

Pyramid Valley Vineyards is a boutique winery owned by Mike and Claudia Weersing who buy grapes by the acre from vineyards in New Zealand (Growers Collection Wines). The Weersings have also planted their own vineyards in limestone-rich soils near Pegasus Bay in Pyramid Valley, about 20 minutes west of Waipara. Winemaker Mike Weersing has an impressive winemaking resume, having worked in many top estates in Spain, Germany and France and also brings meticulous and hands-on attention to the management of his vines. Because of extra canopy management, yields are typically 40-60% of that realized by other buyers of the same vineyard (0.7 tons per acre in 2007) with significantly better maturity. Farming is biodynamic. Winemaking features a strict minimum of additions - little or no sulfur, natural settling, no enzymes, fermentation exclusively with natural yeasts, natural malos, no finings, and filtration only when necessary. Production is tiny. The obvious commitment here suggests this label is poised for future stardom.

Larry Cherubino is one of Australia’s most acclaimed winemakers, with extensive experience in large and small wineries in Australia and major overseas wine producing regions, and around 300 wine show medals attached to his extensive CV. He currently produces his wines in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia. He is renowned for his passionate commitment to maximising wine quality in both vineyard and winery, his state of the art technical knowledge and for having a highly developed understanding of modern wine styles. A graduate of Roseworthy College, Larry had a distinguished career with BRL Hardy at Tintara in South Australia and then at Houghton in Western Australia, where his wines won hundreds of awards in the highly competitive Australian and International wine show system. A few years ago Larry and his partner Edwina started their own range of wines based on Western Australian vineyards, under the Ad Hoc, The Yard and Cherubino labels. Most recently James Halliday awarded Larry Cherubino Wines the 2011 Winery of the year due to “its its focus on single-vineyard and single-region wines” and track record of high quality wines. In the 2011 James Halliday Wine Companion Larry Cherubino Wines received 94 to 97 points for 11 wines and another 11 scored 90 to 93 points.

The Vina Chocalan vineyard is planted on steep slopes and in the piedmont of the Maipo Valley, near parks and lakes in the Metropolitan Region Melipilla province. “Chocalán”is pronounced “Sho-kaw-lann”, it means “yellow Blossom”, name given to the area by ancient aboriginal tribes, as the yellow blossoms grow wild there. The circular “Origin” icon, the Chocalan mark of excellence, reflects the importance accorded to the foundation of the Chocalan wines: an estate vineyard selected for the quality of its privileged terroir. Viña Chocalán produces aromatic, juicy and flavorful wines, an authentic expression of the fruit and terroir. Nurtured from the grape to the glass, the Chocalan wines are a cherished family treasure. After being involved during numerous years in successful agricultural and manufacturing ventures, the Toro family was inspired to set up its own wine project in a stretch of pristine land wedged between the Andes and Coastal mountain ranges, 5 kilometers from the town of Melipilla. These untouched 340 hectares of countryside benefit from a unique microclimate made up of contrasting luminosity, altitude, Pacific influence, varied soil types and sharp temperature fluctuations. Bodega Chacra is located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, 620 miles south of Buenos Aires, roughly equidistant west to east from the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The region possesses a dry and arid climate and is protected by a natural barrier of the surrounding desert. The air is pristine and without pollution, creating tremendous luminosity and purity of sunlight. The seasons are precisely defined, with hot summers, cold winters and mild springs and autumns. This consistency of climate creates a consistency of wine from vintage to vintage.In 2004, Piero Incisa della Rocchetta purchased the first of vineyard land, which is now Bodega Chacra. At the time this was a property with an existing, though abandoned, vineyard planted over seventy years ago. Piero was called from of his multigenerational, Italian winemaking family to the southern hemisphere, compelled by the goal to produce world-class Pinot Noir from uncharted and untested territory.This singular vineyard at Bodega Chacra is of thick, pure, gnarled Pinot Noir vines, plants from their own rootstock producing tiny bunches of small, concentrated berries which are harvested by hand. No automated mechanization is used at any stage of the production process.

In 1885, the Buenos Aires to Mendoza railway opened, cementing the significance of this emerging wine-growing region high in the Andean foothills. Ten years later, Edmund Norton planted the first vines in Mendoza’s Luján de Cuyo district. At 900-1100 metres, the altitude moderates the temperature, causing an extended ripening season, and also exposes the vines to more ultraviolet light, which encourages the development of colour and tannin in the blackskinned varieties. The result is whites packed with vibrant flavour and good natural acidity, and well-structured, foodfriendly reds.

The range is constructed principally according to vine age. Finca La Colonia is sourced from young vines, with no oak to obscure their immediate, accessible fruit. Vineyards over fifteen years old are considered for Barrel Select; their more structured juice is suitable for aging fifty per cent in wood. Past their thirtieth birthday, plantings can make the grade for Reserva, which is entirely matured in French barrels and offers extra depth and complexity. Privada used to be the family’s private reserve, and is now Norton’s signature wine, as well as one of Argentina’s best-respected names, with fifty to eighty year old vines providing great concentration. Perdriel is the recent flagship, from a single vineyard of old vines; with stunning richness and intensity, it proves that Edmund Norton’s hunch about Luján de Cuyo was right.

Philippe and Brigitte Subra started Carinae in 2003 when they came to Mendoza on business and never left. In addition to personally greeting all guests, Philippe regularly gives tours of his boutique winery and conducts guided tastings. Thanks to his fascination with astronomy, all of the bodega’s vineyards and wines have names associated with constellations and stars (CarinaE is named after a constellation visible only from the southern hemisphere during harvest time). While plans to construct an observatory are in the works, Philippe has set up two high-powered telescopes atop the winery’s cement tanks. Famed oenologist Michel Rolland oversees every phase of the winemaking process at Carinae, and the results are balanced wines with intense color, pronounced fruit, and marked tannins.

Enrique Foster’s goal is to produce the best Malbec in Argentina and the world. No expense has been spared, from the latest vineyard management techniques to the stainless steel equipment and the new French oak barrels in the underground cellars. Enrique Foster’s two vineyards are located in what is generally acknowledged to be the world’s best terrain for the Malbec grape, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. The vineyards sit at an elevation of 3,000 feet above sea level on the eastern flank of the Andes, with hot days, cold nights and little rain. The first vineyard, in Carrodilla, where the winery is located, consists of 30 acres of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1919. The second vineyard is located in Las Compuertas, with 20 acres of vines planted in 1966.

The name Eral Bravo is inspired by the Sanchez Nieto family tradition of breeding the Iberic bull – “toro bravo” – in the Salamanca region of Spain from whence Matías Sanchez Nieto and his forebears came. Eral is the name given to the bull of between two and three years old, when he starts to show his essential characteristic bravery or “bravura”. A fitting name for a range of wines that is bursting with just this kind of energy and poise! Eral Bravo owns a total of 155 hectares of prime vineyards in three locations: El Recodo Estate in Alto Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo); Los Indios Estate in Valle de Uco; and Montalba Estate in Ugarteche. Thus the winery draws upon a range of terroirs, each of which interacts differently with the various varietals and affords the winemaking team a rich larder of ingredients for crafting these delicious wines.

Bodegas Etchart was founded in the year 1850, in La Florida, Cafayate, province of Salta, Argentina, a small country house that still today holds the same name where the first Torrontes vines were planted, a specific variety introduced by the inhabitants of the province of Misiones at the end of the 16th century. Located at the base of Los Andes Mountain, at more than 1,750 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest vinicultures of the world. In 1938, Arnaldo Etchart acquired the country house, which was then only 65 ha. and he brought new direction to the winery, thus giving rise to the wine sector in the region.

The high final quality is a result of both this modern technology and the committed work of the winery’s staff.
