Thanks to our Dedicated Members the Coronavirus Emergency Fund Surpasses $100,000 Goal

So much has happened since I wrote my last message to you in the February 2020 newsletter. COVID-19 changed the world and created a sense of urgency at the Middletown Community Foundation. The MCF board of trustees realizes that our role in the community now becomes even more crucial. To that end the board announced in March the creation of the Coronavirus Emergency Fund (CEF) to provide grants to area nonprofits helping individuals and families adversely effected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The goal for the CEF was set at $100,000 with the Trustees allocating an initial $50,000 to kick it off. Over the last two months the Foundation sought donations from our members and the community at large, raising an additional $57,000 and counting. The total raised for the CEF is at $107,000 as I write this message.

COVID-19 will devastate families and small businesses throughout MCF’s service area. The Middletown Community Foundation is positioned to serve as a leader and a facilitator in helping to tackle this crisis head on. Make no mistake, MCF realizes we are in unchartered waters. The world and our local communities may need to make lasting changes, but MCF is committed to being in this for the long haul.

The process for area nonprofits to apply for the emergency funding has been streamlined, requiring only a one- or two-page grant application. Decisions for grant funding are made on a rolling basis, and the Foundation vows to keep the process nimble and efficient.

The following nonprofits received grants from the Coronavirus Emergency Fund over the past two months:

Atrium Medical Center Foundation - $8,000 for a Rapid Testing Device for COVID-19

Downtown Middletown Inc - $20,000 for rent and utility assistance to 36 struggling Middletown businesses

Feed the Hungry - $3,000 for distributing food in Middletown

Grace Baptist Church - $3,000 for the Enabled Food Pantry

Great Miami YMCA - $5,000 to assist with operating costs of daycare for children of first responders

Hope House - $500 for cleaning and disinfecting supplies and PPE

Madison Local Schools - $5,000 for technology assistance to help students virtually connect to their schools

Middletown City Schools - $5,000 to deploy laptops to the neediest K -12 students to enable virtual connection to their schools

Ohio Restaurant Association Education Foundation - $4,000 to help unemployed area restaurant employees pay for utilities, rent, food and gas – recipients must live within MCF’s region

Parachute: CASA - $2,000 to provide volunteers with online capabilities to remotely serve the children in their client base

Salvation Army - $5,000 for the food pantry and $5,000 for utility bill assistance to those in need

The campaign to raise funds for the CEF will continue indefinitely in hopes of keeping up with the many grant requests received on a regular basis. Contributions to the Coronavirus Emergency Fund should be made payable to the Middletown Community Foundation, 300 N. Main Street, Suite 300, Middletown, OH 45042. Indicate CEF in the memo portion of the check.

Many, many thanks to those of you who have already donated to the Coronavirus Emergency Fund. As I often say…it takes a village! Stay safe!

Spreading Cheer!Scholarship signs were such a hit last year we thought we’d do it again. This year they may have been even more popular! Thanks to all our volunteers for placing signs and thanks to these parents for sharing their pictures.
