Our horizon changes. Without losing sight of the end times that lie before us, we begin to shift focus to the event that transformed human history: the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We don’t hone in immediately on the story of Jesus’ birth; that will come later. We first allow ourselves to be drawn into ancient Israel’s deep and patient longing for the Messiah. We delight in the comforting promises made to God’s people of old. We retell the story of John the Baptist, whose preaching echoes the prophets of the distant past and whose baptising ushers in a new era of grace. There is good news to be heard from Paul the apostle too. Can we find the time and space at this busy time of the year to listen to the whisper of the Spirit in our hearts? 2nd Sunday of Advent 6th December 2015

Vol. 34 No.2

If the first Sunday of Advent serves as a bridge between Ordinary Time and Advent, then the second Sunday is a stepping stone towards the feast of Christmas.

Commentary on the Gospel John the Baptist is a key symbol of Advent preparation. The prophet Isaiah is quoted to show how John is preparing the people for Christ’s coming. When the Jews were held captive in Babylon, they built roads for their captors. A day would come, Isaiah wrote, when they would build a highway for their God to prepare the way for His coming. Valleys would be filled in, and hills would be lowered for the “king’s highway.” In a similar fashion, the Church says today, John the Baptist is calling on us to prepare a road so that Christ can come. From a homily on the Gospel by the pastoral team at the St Charles Borromeo parish.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the

Blessed Virgin Mary Tuesday 8th December

On Tuesday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the solemn dogma defined by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854. As Our Lady Immaculately Conceived is the patroness of the United States of America, this is a holy day of obligation in the United States. Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Blessed Pope Pius IX proclaimed on December 8, 1854: "The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin." – Catechism of the Catholic Church

* * * * * * * The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, in its oldest form, goes back to the seventh century, when churches in the East began celebrating the Feast of the Conception of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. In other words, this feast celebrates the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the womb of Saint Anne; and nine months later, on September 8, we celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
