Vikings and Norse in the Moray Firth

Where was the frontier?

Viking pirates attacked areas of Scotland, as elsewherein Western Europe, in the late 700’s and continued spo-radically for several hundred years. They favouredwealthy coastal settlements where their highly mobilefleets could accomplish swift grab and run raids. We knowabout the raids of monasteries, because monks elsewherereported on these frightening marauders, but suspect thatwealthy secular sites were also targeted. Not onlyprecious objects were taken, but also people to be soldinto slavery.

In the wake of these raidsScandinavians came andsettled, in particular onthe Northern and WesternIsles, but also toCaithness and Suther-land. These areas werecontrolled by powerfulchieftains, known as jarlsor earls. Gradually over

time the King of Norway obtained nominal overlordshipover these Scottish Scandinavian settlers. Officially theWestern Isles were part of Norway until 1266, and theNorthern Isles until 1472, resulting in centuries of Scandi-navian influence in these areas. Ideally the term Vikings isused to refer to the raiders, and Norse to the settlers.

The initial Scandinavian settlers were pagan and wereburied with gravegoods in marked contrast to the nativeChristian Picts. Viking graves are known from Caithness, and there appear to be isolated remains of female andmale graves from near Dunrobin Castle and Ospisdalenear Dornoch. South of the Dornoch Firth there is verylittle archaeological evidence, and unfortunately none atall from Dingwall. A Viking silver hoard was deposited atTarbat church, Portmahomack around 1000. Recently asmall silver ingot fragment, similar to ones found in Vikingsilver hoards, was found by a metal detectorist nearDores. If it dates to the Norse period, it would provide hintsof Norse use of the Great Glen. However, unfortunatelysilver ingots were used throughout history and intomodern times, and because it was not excavated by ar-chaeologists we are unable to determine the context ordate. Another metal detector find, but of a more distinctiveobject allowing better dating, was found only last year atArdersier. It is part of an openwork brooch or mount with

an interlaced animal. Brooches of this style were worn inScandinavia and often date around c. 1150. This excitingfind provides evidence of late encounters on the southside of the Moray Firth – but whether as a traded item orpart of a short-lived settlement cannot be determined.

From these fragments of evidence, it is clear we cannotsay anything with certainty about the southern frontier ofthe Vikings and Norse in the Moray Firth area south of theDornoch Firth. I suspect that it was not static, and wouldhave been a contested frontier area with its fertile agri-cultural land. It probably changed hands between Norseopportunists and the local powers, the original Pictishrulers (and possibly kings of Fortriu, if indeed this key latePictish stronghold was situated on the Moray Firth as AlexWoolf has argued), and later the earls of Moray (whoduring the reign of MacBeth in the early 11th century con-trolled a vast area), depending on who was stronger at thetime. Sometime in this period Dingwall presumably wasthe centre of Norse control, perhaps as Barbara Crawfordhas argued, as part of a strategy of the Earls of Orkney togain timber from the Conon and Beauly rivers to bringback to Orkney.

Tantalising questions remain. What was the relationshipbetween Norse and native in this area? Where were thePictish and later native settlements especially to the northof Inverness? And of course, how much and in what waydid this Norse settlement influence the local area? We canonly hope that future archaeological discoveries will shedlight on these issues.

Dr. Susan Kruse is a Viking archaeologist with interests in Viking silverhoards, economic systems, and the issues of frontiers. Currently she isa project officer with ARCH, Archaeology for Communities in theHighlands, providing a range of courses and events for people to learnabout and preserve their local heritage. She is an Honorary ResearchFellow with the University of the Highlands and Islands and a Fellow ofthe Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

People say the funniest things

There are Spoonerisms andFreudian slips, even some of theprofessional TV presenters havefallen foul to the mouth and headparting company. People say thefunniest things - whether it’s thehumour of Groucho Marx, ‘I neverforget a face, but in your case, I’llmake an exception.’ Or a line fromthe old John Wayne film The QuietMan, ‘He’ll regret it till his dying day,if ever he lives that long.’ Or the jokeabout the Irishman - of which I amone - ‘I’d rather work at night anyday.’

People do say the funniest things. Then there are the funny things thatare said with a barb of sarcasm.‘Trust me, I’m a politician.’ Or ‘Yourmoney is safe in our Bank.’ Or thenote from the treasury, ‘there’s nomoney left, good luck.’

Then there are the funny, as instrange, things we say that are not

funny at all. ‘I’m not dead, I’m onlyin the next room.’ Its all meant tocomfort, but it’s as helpful as awater pistol replacing a fire engine.

There are so many things that wesay to each other, and which weswallow whole which if we thoughtabout them at all would make ourblood boil. What about this one - wemustn’t let the top bankers losetheir bonuses in case they leave thecountry - let them, if people won’twork for the good of the country inhard times, what good are they - oris that too simplistic - or perhaps theking hasn’t any clothes on after all!

But this is my least favourite, and Ihear it a lot these days. When itcomes to religion or faith, I hearpeople say things like this. ‘Wemustn’t indoctrinate people, let’s letthe children make up their ownminds when they are able to decidefor themselves.’ Seems fairenough?

Trouble is, by then it’s too late, thefoundations are not laid and thechildren are grown and have noknowledge on which to make arational decision about faith. It’s asif you let your child do whateverthey wanted when young and thensay your daughter age 16 decidesshe wants to be a Ballet dancer -will she suceed? Probably not -because skills that should havebeen taught as 5 year olds areabsent.

So parents, don’t be funny. Teachyour little ones about faith. Takethem to Sunday School, and betterstill you go too, so that when theyare at the stage of making the bigdecisions of life, they haveknowledge and skills and experi-ence from which to proceed. I hopethat seems fair enough. Its no joke!

Police Report

no Police representation at meeting.

CCllr. m ashford wished to ask of the

police if there was any ‘duty of care’ by

newsagents for their ‘paper boys’. he

drives through nairn every morning at

07.30 and encounters at least 3 working

paper boys riding their bikes, in the

darkness, without lights or ‘high vis’’

tabards.

Matters Arising

a) nairn Bus issues ~ update and Dr.

surgery survey. J mackie reported that

the Bus service had now returned to

what had existed before the cuts. Dr.

surgery survey is to be arranged and it

is hoped that there will be a good

response.

b) a96 resurfacing work and safety

issues. there had been doubt

expressed by members of the public as

to the safety of the positioning of the

‘white line’ defining the boundary

between the carriageways and the

cycle path, in that it tends to ‘pull’ the

traffic towards the kerb. J mackie added

that if the Community Council had been

consulted we may have expressed a

further wish for the speed limit to be

moved further out to the sandown road

junction.

c) town Centre redevelopment. Dick

youngson reported that local group

niCe had been busy looking at what

might be achieved with the town centre

redevelopment. niCe and the

Community Councils tended to have a

wider view than hC and felt that just

handing it over to a developer is not

good enough. moving the bus stop from

the forecourt of the old bus station and

replacing it with two, adjacent, on the

a96 one east and one West. in the end

there wasn’t a great deal of difference

between niCe and hC, agreement

should be fairly easily reached.

d) sandown lands~ Where now? J

mackie commented that the suburban

CC had had a meeting with hC some

time ago asking if now the Deveron

homes development had been stymied

could the Wetland project be proceeded

with? he had been told that it would not

be possible then, as Deveron homes

still had two years to decide whether to

proceed or to abandon their plans for

the sandown lands. however since

Deveron had now withdrawn their

interest we have heard nothing. s Park

answered saying ‘now Deveron have

moved on we can start to look at the

whole thing again’. J mackie suggested

that the CC could move the wetland

project forward before any future

bidders were sought.

CCllr. J hart asked how the Common

good fund can be billed for a ‘blunder’,

by the then local committee of the hC,

in allowing the sandown lands to

become a secure agricultural tenancy,

consequently incurring a large compen-

sation payment to the farmer

concerned. Was the limit of six years on

fiscal debts not applicable in this case?

s Park answered saying the monies in

the Common good had long been

earmarked for this purpose and he

didn’t intend to go all through this

subject again.

J mackie thought clearly mistakes had

been made but it was time to move on.

member of the public D scholes asked

that further provision of allotments will

figure in future of sandown lands?

N.C.C.F. funding withdrawal

Cllr. s. Park told the meeting ‘We have

had a meeting and are thrashing out

how we can fund it’.

Treasurer’s Report

Planning Matters

Sainsbury’s

CCllr D youngson reported that we

£697.77 in funds.

Planning ~ an objection to an applica-

tion at ‘achnashelloch’ moss-side, had

been withdrawn on production of a

revised plan. Planning had since been

consented.

sainsbury’s ~ We wait to see if the de-

velopment goes ahead after the

scottish government stated it’s intent to

increase the tax burden on large, out of

town, superstores. C. Cllr. m ashford

commented that the furore had been

mostly fired by the scotsman

newspaper’s antipathy towards the

scottish government.

Highland Councillors Report

a Park thought most subjects had

already been covered and looked

forwards towards to the CC forum on

the 10th feb. Budgets 2011 were now

in place.

AOCB

D scholes asked what the situation was

regarding the changing to a single

Community Council for nairn. he felt

that the public mood was overwhelm-

ingly in favour of the proposal as was

proved by the questionnaire in the

‘nairnshire telegraph’.

a. Park answered all three community

councils needed to agree on the

proposal; the hC could not impose it.

J mackie said it should not be up to the

community councils either but the

people of nairn. the process was to

have been done in two phases; Phase

i, consultation with the community

councils. Phase 2, consultation with the

public. Phase 2 was never done. time

was short as the plan was due to be

submitted by april 1st 2011, the election

would be held in november 2011.

The Elgin Marvels

Fossil Reptiles & Footprints

Not to be confused with the Elgin Marbles, the Elgin ‘Marvels’actually come from Elgin! They are 250 million year old fossilreptiles, and their footprints, that were collected from oldsandstone quarries, mostly over a century ago. Dr Neil Clark,Curator of Palaeontology at the Hunterian Museum inGlasgow, provides a fascinating insight into our local history.

Carol Hopkins, a student at a 1996 Open University SummerSchool in Edinburgh, had visited the local Clashach quarry atHopeman and found a vast number of footprints beingexcavated. The quarry had recently been re-opened to supplystone for the facing of the new Museum of Scotland inEdinburgh. By 1997, Carol had investigated over 200 foot-prints and trackways!

The animals responsible for making these footprints arethought to have been mammal-like reptiles. Fossil skeletons ofthese animals were known from the nearby Cuttie’s Hillockwest of Elgin and can be seen displayed in the Elgin Museum.

Also in 1997, Bill George, who worked in the quarry atClashach, found a rock with an intriguing hole in it. It was im-mediately thought this may be a cavity left by bones dissolvedby acid waters. No recognisable fossil bones had ever beenfound in the Hopeman sandstone so this discovery was po-tentially an extremely important one, as the age of thesandstone at Hopeman was not known with any certainty.

At that time, there was really only one way to deal with cavityfossils; to fill the cavity with rubber and smash it open with ahammer to remove the dried rubber. I decided this was

probably not the best way to investigate the cavity as it woulddamage the fossil so I removed the rock to Glasgow for furtherresearch using modern medical techniques.

With the help of Calum Adams, a consultant radiologist, at theWestern Infirmary in Glasgow and the Royal Alexandra inPaisley, we scanned the hole in the rock using both CT andMRI. It was not easy scanning through such a thickness ofrock and the machine had to be tweaked close to its limits. Asthe CT produced its first scan, we saw something I was notexpecting. We saw a difficult to interpret complex network ofcavities.

When all the scans were collected and stacked into a 3Dimage, the nature of the hole in the rock became clear. It wasthe entire skull of a mammal-like reptile! After this, the rockwas placed in a plastic box and filled with fluid to make theMRI scanning work. The whole process was so unusual thatthe BBC filmed an episode of Tomorrow’s World on this noveltechnique of analysing cavity fossils in a non-destructivemanner.

Research by Arthur Cruickshank, an expert in such animals, showed that the skull was identical to a known animal fromCuttie’s Hillock called Dicynodon (Gordonia) traquairi.Because of this discovery, we now know that the age of theHopeman sandstones is the same age as the Cuttie’s Hillocksandstones closer to Elgin - 250 million years old.

In March 1998, the quarrying was increased which put anumber of critical footprints at risk of being destroyed. TheMoray Stone Cutters kindly offered to move the slabs ofsandstone containing footprints to a convenient spot, formingan amphitheatre close to the Moray Coastal Trail nearHopeman.

If you are interested in fossils from the Elgin area, or findingout more about other fossils, please visit the Elgin Museumwww.elginmuseum.org.uk

PILATES FOR YOUR POSTURE AND YOUR LIF

"Pilates and Nordic Walking compliment eachother incredibly well" says Karen Powell, Inverness based Pilates Teacher and British Nordic Walking Instructor.

PILATES trains the body to work in its own natural posture, lengthening and strengthening the muscles gently, and so develops yur deep core muscles which support your spine with movement. After practising Pilates for a few months, Karen says that "Often people experience the feeling of having grown taller, of feeling more relaxed, as their posture has improved"

NORDIC WALKING uses the same principles of Pilates in its unique walking style, using poles, and also has the benefits of improving stamina and cardiovascular fitness. It uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience. With a technique similar to the upper body action of classic cross country skiing, it becomes a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed at many levels, from walking for health to athletic Nordic running.

Karen Powell is based in Inverness and runs short courses, tailored to suit small groups and individuals.Armed with your own poles and a wee bit of tuition there are many Nordic Walking routes of varying length, both easy and more difficult on your doorstep and easily accessible from Inverness.

F

Try out some of these scenic alternatives........Craig Phadrigh Forest - 1-2 mile easy routeOrd Hill - 2-4 mile route, undulatingDaviot Forest - 2-4 mile route, fairly flatCaledonian Canal for Inverness to Dochgarroch return - 7 miles flat.In addition here are 2 simple Pilates exercises you can try at home to help your body move more freely.

1. Spine Twist Start by sitting tall, on a chair or the floor. Reach arms out to sides, and allow your shoulders to relax away from your ears. Pull in your belly button. Imagine you are a puppet being lifted up through the crown of your head. Turn to the right, keeping your hips forwards, return to the middle, then turn to the left. Repeat 3 times on each side.

2. Hip RollLie down on the floor with knees bent. Place a cushion between your knees. Notice how your back feels on the floor. Breathe in a relaxed way without lifting your shoulders. Tilt your tail bone (at the bottom of your spine), flatten your back onto the floor, and peel your back off the floor into a long line. Imagine you have a ski slope running from your knees to your shoulders. Pull in your belly button, and then gradually return to the floor, allowing each bone in your spine to touch the floor one by one until you are back down to your tail bone once again. Repeat 5 times.

This is the best indian restaurant me and my

husband have eaten in for a very long time when

it comes to quality of food.

Jaqui and Paddy Derbyshire

”“

I went for a meal with my husband on a Thursday evening and we were treated to a very enjoyable evening meal, which was very relaxing and compliments to the staff for their very attentive and friendly service. The Menu offered a vast range very reasonable priced Indian Cuisine dishes and it was highly recommended that we tried something from Sam’s Specialities Menu. Once shown to our table we were presented with a mix of Papadums, Chutney and Pickle to enjoy whilst browsing through the menu. We opted to go with the chef’s recommenda-tions for the evening. For starters I had Sam’s Special Platter Vegetarian Option, which was presented with a crispy fresh salad this consisted of mushroom pakora, onion bhaji and vegetable samosa. The other starter was Sam’s Special Meat Platter this was a delicious array of lamb Tikka, chicken Pakora, meat Samosa and chicken kebab all tender and cooked to perfection. We ordered a selection of main courses from Sam’s Specialities Menu, the first was Sali Bolti this

was tender lamb cooked in onions, tomatoes and spices, topped with crispy straw potatoes, the next was Sam’s Special (Malaysian) a delightful dish of flavour cooked with Garlic, Lemon Grass, onions, pepper, green chillies and fresh coconut. The highlight of the meal was the arrival of the Sholey Chicken, cooked with onions, peppers, tomatoes, topped in coriander in ginger sauce and flamed Sambuka served in an iron Karani. These were all served with Pilau Rice and Naan Bread. Each meal was exceptional. After such an exceptional meal we were struggling to find room for dessert but were tempted by the Coppa Ice –Cream range, I had the Chocolate & Custard Pistachio flavour, which was served with a drizzle of sauce and chopped Pistachio on top. Our other option was Mascar-pone and Amaretto flavour, which was very enjoyable.

Over all i’d give Sam’s 10/10 and would highly recommend this restaurant for its delicious cuisine and comfortable, relaxed atmosphere.

Parliament Blog ”“News that Castle Stuarthas been chosen as thevenue for the BarclaysScottish Open hascheered us all up, in thesetimes of gloom and austerity. From the 7th -

11th July, the “spotlight” will be on theMoray Firth, Inverness. The benefits tothe area will be considerable. The goldcourse General Manager, Stuart McColm, has said that we need to attract20,000 visitors a day to be sure of keeping the event, as the Loch LomondClub, which has hosted the event since1996 attracted between 70-85,000 - soput it in your diary!

This will be a major attraction to bringvisitors north - and a boost for hotels,B&B’s and guest houses. Perhaps inScotland, we tend to undersell our ownmanifold tourist attractions - so the potential to use the tourism trade to bolster our jobs, livelihoods and futuresmay not be realised. We can be backward at coming forward, and maynot see Scotland as others see us. Thiswas brought home to me when a B&Bowner from Newtonmore told me thatshe had holidayed in the Nile in January, and asked me how many visitors Ithought there were in ships on the Nile,

on any one day. She told me the answer:one million! With our scenery, whisky, tartan, Gaelic, history, culture, heritage, beaches, mountains, lochs as well asgolf, fishing, sailing and countless otherreasons to come to Scotland, we could, should and will see more people fromcountries throughout the world comingfor a stay here.

Lying between the current time, and myvisits to the Scottish Open in July, is thelittle matter of the Scottish elections! This column is pretty much non-politicalso I will not make a pitch here! But politics and elections do have theirlighter side. I do remember, for example, one of the first letters I received as MSP,on the day after I was elected, three elections and twelve years ago. “DearEwing” it began rather unpromisingly.“I woke up this morning to learn thatyou are my MSP. This makes this day theunhappiest of my life.” It went on in thisrather gloomy vein, but then ended witha twist in the tale. “PS Can you send asigned photograph.” This was not, I amrelieved to say, a typical communication. And I am not sure what happened to thisvoter after I complied with the request. But if he is reading this, and does comealong to view the Scottish Open, I amhappy to make his acquaintance!

Last month I washonoured to bethe guestspeaker at theHighlands andIslands PressAwards in Nairn.

The local press are vital to ourcommunities and it is importantthat we recognise the importantrole they play. We are lucky inthe Highlands to have such avibrant, successful, and challenging local media. Theircommitment to the wellbeing ofthe Highlands is somethingthey and I share. Whilst we donot always agree, and I may notalways seem grateful for it, it isvital that they keep making thelives of our elected representa-tives awkward - it is thelifeblood of our democracy.

It was a privilege to present theawards to the winners - apartfrom anything else as the minister for public spending Ido not often get to make announcements that peoplelike!
