Vikings in a titlefight with new con-
ferenceby Marty Seeger
Leader staff writerFREDERIC – The Frederic Vikings ran
away with the conference crown last sea-son, and without question, they were oneof the top five teams in the state in Divi-sion 7. This year’sroad to the confer-ence crown willtake on new chal-lenges in 2012 asthe Vikings moveinto the LakelandNorth Conference, filled with formerteams of the LargeLakeland. With aschool the size ofFrederic going upagainst schoolstwice their size, there’s no doubt that the Vikings are thelittle fish in a big pond.
“It’ll be a tough season. It’ll be chal-lenging. Nothing easy. It’ll be differentthan it has been the last few years, that’sfor sure,” said Ken Belanger, who iscoaching his 47th year of football, and
12th as head coach of the Vikings, proofthat he is truly doing what he loves.
“It’s so much fun. It’s exciting. Greatkids. They make it interesting, that’s forsure,” Belanger added.
The Vikings of 2012 put in anothersolid effort in the weight room over thesummer, along with a summer agilityand fitness program through help of thetrainers from St. Croix Regional MedicalCenter. Players participated in the pro-gram on their own time, which shows thework ethic that continues each year withthe Frederic football athletes.
Frederic has a good number of athletesback from last season but lost two key de-fensive tackles and an inside linebackerto graduation. They’ll be looking to oth-ers to fight for those three spots to fill thevoid.
“We’ve got both defensive ends back, couple linebackers and couple d-backs.So we got some back, never as many as
you’d like to have back but they’re doinga good job,” Belanger said.
Senior Adam Chenal was a 1,000-yardrusher last season and will provideplenty of leadership for Frederic this sea-son in the backfield, along with PeterChenal. There’s also center BlainClemons, right guard Brad Peterson, tight end Chris Schorn, and split end IanLexen. Senior guard David Crandell hasalso been solid so farthis season. AdamChenal, Clemons,Peterson and Lexenare team captains.
There’s also a newface at quarterbackthis season in juniorJaryd Braden, whoBelanger said hasmade big improve-ments from last sea-son. He is replacing
last year’s quarterback, Waylon Buck.“I’m just really pleased with how Jaryd
has looked at quarterback. Leaps andbounds ahead of what he did last year.Done a great job getting ready,” Belangersaid.

Pirates workingwith a new headcoach this season
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
GRANTSBURG – New Pirates headcoach Adam Hale isn’t an unfamiliar facearound the Grantsburg area as he’s spentthe past two seasons as Grantsburg’shead girls basketball coach. Along withhis tenure on thebasketball court, healso spent time asan assistant coachon the Pirates foot-ball team, as well aslast year’s defen-sive coordinator. This is his first yearas a head coach butHale totals 12 yearsof experience as anassistant coachwith the Piratesand elsewhere. So what’s Hale most ex-cited for this coming season?
“A chance to work with a hardworkinggroup of kids and a number of kids withvarsity experience,” he said.
The Pirates finished in the middle ofthe West Lakeland Conference with a 4-2record and playoff appearance under for-mer coach Keith Lehne, who spent 17years as Pirates head coach. The Pirates
also made the playoffs last year but lostout to Stratford in the opening playoffgame. Hale has a solid number of experi-enced seniors returning, which is likely tobe one of the Pirates biggest strengths.
“The kids also put in a great effort thissummer in the weight room,” Hale said, and added that one of the weaknessescould be the lack in numbers throughouttheir freshman, sophomore and juniorclasses. Some of those who are returningfor the 2012 season include Joe Gaffney atrunning back and defensive back, andDakota Linke, Adam Parker, ClayPoeschl, Colton Tretsven and ChandlerWitzany on the offensive and defensiveline. Evan Ryan could also spend time onthe defensive line and at wide receiver.Connor Myers is another receiver, quar-terback and defensive back to watch, andBrandon Ryan and Bryce Ryan will re-turn to running back and linebacker du-ties. Jacob Wald could provide an optionas a receiver and defensive back, andLucas Willis is a returning quarterbackand linebacker.
“Each Friday night will be a battle,”Hale said. “It should be a close race andmany teams probably have a shot to winit.”

Cards could havethe edge in eight-man this season
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
LUCK – With a predicted decline in en-rollment and a shortage in the number ofunderclassmen boys, the Luck Cardinalsfootball team felt as though there was nochoice but to moveto eight-man foot-ball for the nexttwo seasons. Withonly 22 players onroster this season, possibly evenfewer next season,eight-man footballseemed the perfectfit for Luck.
The Cardinalswere riddled withinjuries last yearand because of that, and eight-man foot-ball on the horizon, the team started anoffensive scheme under head coach DonKendzior to fit what they’ll be running onoffense this year. It could be a significantadvantage for the Cardinals who aresmall in numbers but big on talent, in-cluding several seniors that have spentsignificant time in the weight room overthe past summer. Kendzior says he’s ex-cited about playing eight-man this seasonand about the senior leadership. Key re-turning starters include Evan Armour,Brodie Kunze and Kyle Hunter. Other re-turning key starters include Karsten Pe-tersen, Trent Strapon, Alex Richey andJoe Christensen.
Luck held its first scrimmage of the sea-son on Friday, Aug. 17, scoring severaltimes in the process and producing pun-ishing hits. Watching eight-man footballisn’t unlike watching 11-man football, with exception of the football field, whichis smaller at 80 yards long and 40 yardswide.
The Lakeland 8-Man Conference in-cludes Siren, Luck, Northwood/SolonSprings, New Auburn, Birchwood,Prairie Farm, Bruce and Winter. Kendziorexpects New Auburn, Northwood/SolonSprings and Prairie Farm to be amongthe top teams.
Kendzior said the Cardinals biggeststrength will come from the fierce workethic of its athletes as well as leadership,
but the weaknesses will lie with a rosterof only 22 players that includes under-classmen. Barring injuries during the sea-son, the Cardinals could still be the teamto beat this year.
Along with the Lakeland 8 Conferencethere are schools in the southern part ofthe state who have been playing eight-man as well. According to wissports.netthey include Stockbridge, Oneida Nation,
Abundant Life/Madison Country Day,Wayland Academy, Wisconsin School forthe Deaf and Valley Christian. At the endof the eight-game season, the top fourteams will be meeting at a neutral field atStevens Point. The game would beplayed at the time 11-man teams are play-ing in the Level 3 playoffs.
The Cardinals are set for their first year of eight-man football along with Siren and six others in the Lakeland 8-ManConference. They beat Bruce 46-0 in the season opener in Rice Lake. – Photo by Marty Seeger

Saints look to de-fend conferencecrown under new
coachby Marty Seeger
Leader staff writerST. CROIX FALLS – The Saints football
program underwent some changes sincelast year with one of the most significantbeing the additionof a new headcoach in GrantBelisle. He replacesformer head coachRod Sempf, who isdoing some coach-ing at the middleschool level thisseason, and enjoy-ing a little morefree time.
Belisle isn’t newto coaching and isin his 11th season but first as head coach. He did eight seasons of coaching at Som-erset, which is known as the local footballpowerhouse, and spent the past few at St.Croix Falls. Perhaps his biggest challengethis season will be rebuilding what was a
senior-dominated team last year. Theygraduated 17 seniors last year and have amuch smaller senior core coming back.
“Most of the 2011 skilled-position play-ers were seniors, so we’ll have new facescarrying the ball. Shane Swanson andJake Sommer do return to the runningback position that they shared last sea-son,” Belisle said.
The Saints will have a little more inex-perience than last season, but Belisle sayshe’s excited to see the seniors “experiencewhat Friday nights are all about duringtheir last season.”
The new Lakeland North Conferencewill be another new challenge for theSaints this season.
“Conf realignment is a huge change.Playing smaller, but experienced and suc-cessful, programs like Shell Lake and
Frederic brings a certain challenge that isnew to SCF,” Belisle said. It also meansthere will be no gimmes this season ei-ther.
“Every week, our opponent has the ca-pability of beating us. We have to takecare of ourselves, put our best effort for-ward and see what the outcome is,” saidBelisle.
Belisle said pre-dictions on the sea-son are difficult thisearly since he is a lit-tle unfamiliar withsome of the teams inthe Lakeland Con-ference, but likemany other coaches,he believes Cameronand Frederic could
be the top contenders for a conferencetitle. But he’s quick to point out thatUnity, Grantsburg and Webster are justsome of the others that will be in the mixas well.

Eight-man footballkicks off unique new
season by Marty Seeger
Leader staff writerSIREN – The Siren Dragons are enter-
ing an exciting new era of football thisseason after deciding to go with eight-man football, alongwith Luck, North-w o o d / S o l o nSprings, NewAuburn, Birch-wood, PrairieFarm, Bruce andWinter. It’s not onlya chance to give thesmaller schools awinning attitude, ithas also broughtback a new sense ofexcitement to thegame of football.
“I am most excited about the enthusi-asm the players are showing this year. They are coming together as a team andnot individuals,” said coach Bill Hoefler, who is in his fifth year of coaching.
One of the biggest challenges the Drag-ons will have this season is learning themany new offense and defensive playsthey’ll see from opposing teams this year.
With so many options to choose from, and little or no game film to study, therecould be many surprises in each game.
“Our biggest weakness will be in try-ing to adapt on a game-by-game basis thevarying defenses and offenses that will bethrown our way,” said Hoefler.
But since most of the teams are facingan essentially different game of football itcould even the playing field. Eight-manfootball can be a lot faster with emphasison high-scoring offenses that can be diffi-cult to defend, but with three fewer play-ers on both sides of the ball, the Dragonsshould be in good shape. Key returningplayers include Shay Johnson, ReubenMixsooke, Caleb Mulroy and JoshLemieux.
“I think more than ever, however, thisteam will be very well-balanced. We havemany players that will be contributing inone way or another, and we aren’t solelyrelying on just a few players to make theplays this year,” Hoefler said.
Some teams already opted to go eightman last year and may have a slight ad-vantage as to how the game is played, yetin the end, it’s still just football, with onlythree fewer players. Hoefler believes thatLuck could be one of the toughest teamsin the eight-man conference this season, but expects Northwood/Solon Springsand New Auburn to compete as well.
“However, I think the conference isvery well-balanced, and each and everygame could be tough,” he said.

Eagles conditionedfor success this sea-

Leader staff writerBALSAM LAKE – The Eagles football
team played .500 football last seasonoverall, but with a4-2 conferencerecord, theyearned a spot inthe playoffs, onlyto fall against astrong Somersetteam. Unity has alot of fresh newfaces on the teamthis year, as theyonly bring backthree starters on of-fense, and will befilling the gaps with less experience. Buton that same note, the returning playersdid see some playing time at the varsitylevel, which is a bonus for coach DaveAnderson.
“We do have a lot of kids coming backthat have played varsity roles. Theymight not have started last year but theygot a lot of playing time, so they know our offense and defense really well,” An-
derson said. The Eagles have dropped considerably
in enrollment from last season, goingfrom about 370 kids to 313. There areroughly 36 kids on the roster this year, which is also a drop.
“It might be a weakness because we’regoing to have to bring up some youngerkids,” Anderson said, adding too thatmost of their starters will need to playboth on offense and defense. Last year theteam didn’t have to do that as much.
At the team’s most recent scrimmage atAmery, Anderson was pleased with howhis team played, particularly with howwell-conditioned they were compared to
the other teams.“They’ve been really working hard on
conditioning. A lot of weight room workover the summer,” Anderson said, but healso said the Eagles will need to be in topform since many players will be neededon both offense and defense.
Anderson feels the team's biggeststrength will be in the conditioning butalso says he is big on the offensive anddefensive line. He has starting runningback Kyle Sorensen from last season andwill have a new quarterback with ZachJohnson.
The Eagles have a slight change thisseason with the new Lakeland NorthConference and the addition of Shell
Lake and Frederic. Other than playingFrederic for the first time in many years, the Eagles will be set to take on the sameconference rivals and earn another spotin the playoffs.

Tigers short on sen-iors but hope
to shine in new con-ference
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
WEBSTER – If the Webster Tigers foot-ball team can start the season the waythey finished lastseason, they’ll bein good shapeunder head coachJeromie Voeltz, who has been lead-ing the Tigers since2005. Webster de-feated Unity andFlambeau in theirfinal two games ofthe season andwon the opener, but it was a diffi-cult conference season overall. This yearthe challenges will be even higher, as theTigers get set to play in the LakelandNorth Conference for the first time.
“Every team we play will be a key op-ponent. We are very fortunate this year tobe in an extremely tough conference thatwill give our football team a challengeeach and every week. We will need to beon our A-game as we face seven playoff
teams from a year ago. Our athletes knowthat they cannot take a moment off be-cause each opponent will be a difficulttask. We are going to have to prepare ex-tremely hard each and every day, and ourcoaches and players are going to be readyfor those challenges,” Voeltz said.
The team is short on seniors this yearwith only three, and of the seven teamsthey face on the schedule this year, fiveearned a spot in the playoffs. They returnseven letter winners from last year in-cluding seniors Nathan Puttbrese andDillon Reeder. Juniors Aaron Dietmeier,Cliff Benjamin, Mark Stoner, Lance Pre-ston and Michael Johnson round out thelist.
“We will be obviously lacking in oursenior numbers, but I believe that they
are up for any task that is presented infront of them. With only three seniors, wewill be looking for some of our youngerathletes to also step up and be that solidfoundation that we need for the successof our program,” Voeltz said.
With so much talent loaded into theLakeland North Conference, the Tigersand others will have their hands full eachweek. Voeltz says Frederic and St. CroixFalls are favorites to be at the top of theheap again this season, but others feelCameron could bring a lot to the table, since many of their talented skill playersare back again this year. Either way,Voeltz feels his kids are up to the chal-lenge.
“I am excited to start another new jour-ney with a new group of student athletes.
We have a very eager group of athleteswho are up to the challenges that a foot-ball season brings forth.”

Frederic volleyballVikings starting2012 season with
a new coachby Marty Seeger
Leader staff writerFREDERIC – Frederic Vikings have a
familiar face back in the gym with 2004Frederic graduate Jackie (Funk) Petersonat the helm. The married mother of a 1-
year-old daughtermoved back to thearea last July, after sixyears living in EauClaire.
Peterson was astandout athlete inboth volleyball andtrack, and playedtwo years of volley-ball at VermilionCommunity Collegein Ely, Minn. Shesays her main sportwas track and field inhigh school, whereshe earned trips tostate in the 300-meterhurdles and 4x100-meter relay. This isPeterson’s first coach-ing experience, butshe’s excited for theopportunity.
“We all get a fresh
start,” said Peterson, her new career. Shehas a full roster of about 24 girls includ-ing seven seniors and two juniors.
“We’ve got a lot of really good sopho-mores and good freshmen coming up, soI think with some consistency, we’ll havesome good years coming up,” she said.
Frederic posted just three wins in atough conference last season, but theywon seven matches overall and earned atrip to the second round of the WIAA re-gional playoffs. They lost a few key sen-ior starters from last season, but have alot to look forward to with a new coach.Peterson says her newness as a coachmight be a weakness, but could also be anadvantage.
“I consider it a weakness because I’venever coached before, but at the sametime, the girls are kind of helping mewith things, and I’m helping them withthings. So I think we’ll be a stronger teamaltogether just because we’re learning to-gether.”

Grantsburg volleyballPirates looking for arepeat of last year
by Greg MarstenLeader staff writer
GRANTSBURG – The Pirates return tothe fold with second-year head coachDeb Allaman-Johnson, who also has 18years total under her belt as a Piratecoach.
Grantsburg swept the West LakelandConference last year, and finished with a
32-2 overall record, culminating in a re-turn to WIAA StatePlayoff action, earned via a spark-ling win over EauClaire Regis, but thegirls fell by a 3-2mark to Spencer inthe state semifinal.
For 2012, the Pi-rates have an un-usual attribute this
year: nine seniors. “We have more seniorsthan we have had in our history, I believe. They will all play a different role,” Alla-man-Johnson said. “Our senior leader-ship is outstanding. We havetop-achieving students, positive rolemodels, state musicians and multi-sportathletes with many talents. Our entireteam is friendly, coachable and skilled.”
She noted that the Pirates did lose threeall-conference players, one of whom wasalso all-state, and called it “a challenge toovercome,” but the talent pool is deep inGrantsburg. “We have eager kids readyto step in, so we have a lot of new facesand more shared positions,” she added.
The Pirates are again favored to domi-nate the West Lakeland Conference, buttheir success makes them common tar-gets. “We consider every team a key op-ponent, but some of our best competitionthis season will come right in our ownconference.” She won’t make any predic-tions, but applauds the conferencecoaches for improving their programstremendously. “This makes everyone bet-ter. Area athletes have more skill and ex-
perience and coaches are doing a greatjob bringing up the level of play. It’s excit-ing.”
All-conference players and defensivestandouts Kylie Pewe and SamSchwieger return, as does libero GraceCorbin. “Our middles, RuthAnn Peder-sen and Macy Hanson, shared a spot lastyear and are ready to lead the team,” Al-laman-Johnson said.
She thinks the Pirates biggest strengthsthis year can be stated in five words: “Bal-
ance. Commitment.Work ethic. Desire.”She said their weak-nesses are one of ge-netics: beingvertically chal-lenged, with a teamheight averagearound 5-foot, 5-inches tall.

Luck volleyballLuck has fighting
chance for a confer-enc title
by Greg MarstenLeader staff writer
LUCK – The Cardinals roll into 2012with a solid returning corps this seasonunder veteran head coach Jen Nelson.
“We only lost one senior last season,”Nelson said. “So wehave a core group ofplayers that saw ex-tensive court timelast year. The team isalso holding eachother to a higherlevel of account-abil-ity and level of playthis season.
The Cards finishedsecond in the WestLakeland Conference
last season, with a 10-2 conference recordand a 24-7 overall mark. Their seasonended in the WIAA Regional semifinalwith a hard-fought, 3-2 loss to Clayton.
“The players put in a lot of hours in theoffseason, and now they are ready toplay!” Nelson said. “I am so grateful tohave such committed players and parentsthat love the game of volleyball.”
The Cards have a bevy of quality re-turning players at all grades. “We reallyare fortunate to have so much talent atLuck. The team understands that they’reeither going to win or lose as a team. It’s
not going to be oneperson’s victories orfaults,” Nelson said.“It doesn’t comedown to one play. Itcomes down to themplaying as a teamand the team withthe least amount oferrors wins ... We are“one team with onedream.”
She thinks on of the biggest strengthsfor Luck this season is the experience ofthe team playing together for so long. “Ialso feel like the girls have become ‘prob-lem solvers,’ able to recognize mistakeson the court and fix them,” she added.
Nelson was reluctant to predict out-comes in the conference, but promised
“Some really great volleyball from Luckthis year ... We are all looking forward toan exciting season. Go Cardinals!” she en-thused.

conferenceby Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
ST. CROIX FALLS – Choosing thisyear’s varsity squad was relatively easyfor coach Stacie Hoff in St. Croix Falls. With the exception of Sarah Petznick and
right side blockerAlexis Erickson, theSaints have a lot ofweapons back, andmany of them haveimproved tenfoldfrom last season.
“We had almost allthe kids that are onvarsity here everymorning, workingtheir butt off for anhour and a half every
day. Two hours. They’ve gotten bigger, faster, stronger, it’s unbelievable the waythey’ve progressed this season,” Hoffsaid.
One of the main differences with thisyear’s team is the addition of two fresh-men including a starting setter, EmmaWondra. The rest include starting outsidehitter Sydney Geisness, who has been onthe varsity all four years.
“She has comeback just absolutelyphenomenal. In thebest shape, and I justfeel she’s going todominate this year,”Hoff said.
Senior NatalieSempf is back as theteam’s libero, andjuniors KierstynCampbell and Jes-
sica Rademacher will fill keyspots on the left side of thecourt. Many of the playershave been playing club vol-leyball over the summer, andGeisness has been involvedin a league out of the TwinCities. But the biggeststrength is the weight train-ing over the summer accord-ing to Hoff, as well as height, depth and blocking ability.
“Our blocking has alwaysbeen kind of a strength. Wehave some tall kids here at St.Croix,” Hoff said. Finishingthird behind Grantsburg andLuck in the conference lastyear, the Saints look to be topcontenders this season.

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
SIREN – Siren head coach Caryn Stan-ford is in her fourth season as head coachof the Dragons volleyball team, and whilethe process of turning the program
around has been agradual one, she feelsthe team is headingin the right directionthis year.
“I think we aremoving up in ourlevel of our ability, and I’m excited tosee how they fare,”Stanford said.
The team lost twoseniors to graduation
last year but have the majority of theirstarters back for their senior season. Those seniors have had a lot of time toplay at the varsity level, and they hope toshine this season and use what they’velearned over the past three years.
“We gained a lot of good experiencelast year, and this year we have somegood newcomers coming in and we’relooking pretty good. I think we’ll be justfine,” Stanford said.
The Dragons had just one win last sea-son, but it came at just the right time dur-ing the first round of playoffs againstSouth Shore.
Team strengths include not only seniorleadership but the fact that the team is acohesive group and gets along well. Theteam has had an interesting start to theseason as they’ve been forced to practicein Webster due to the fire at the end of theschool year last year. Stanford says theyshould be back to playing at home oncethe regular season begins and able to lookat their predicament in a positive way.
“Webster’s beenvery generous,”Stanford said. “Ina way, it’s a goodt e am-bu i l d i ngthing becauseyou’ve got to relyon each other.”

BALSAM LAKE – The Eagles foundthemselves at 5-12 for the season last yearand went through their share of ups anddowns. With the resignation of former
coach Chris Lesneskiduring the middle ofthe season, juniorvarsity coach Jen-nifer DeLozier tookover as an interimcoach to lead theteam until the end. This year, DeLozier isback again to con-tinue her first-everhead-coaching roleand appears to be a
great fit so far.“When Chris left last year, I kind of fin-
ished off the season for him, and youknow I just decided to give it a try. It’s agood group of girls and it should be fun,”DeLozier said.
As the former JV coach and secretary atUnity, DeLozier is more than familiarwith the athletes and knows where thisteam is capable of going. She also hasnearly the entire team back from last sea-
son, and many of those girlshave been playing varsityroles since their sophomoreyear. Only one of thestarters from last year’steam was lost to gradua-tion.
“It’s going to be fun. Thisis a good core group ofgirls, so I just hope they canget along and play volley-ball. That’s the fun part,”said DeLozier.
Along with a greatknowledge of the game, De-Lozier is a fierce competitorand was a standout athleteat her alma mater in Fred-eric, where she grew up.
“I’m very competitive.More so than most of thesegirls are,” she said.

year coach MindyWidiker, who led thesquad to a 5-7 confer-ence record last sea-son and an 8-9overall mark, endingwith a first-roundWIAA Regional lossto rival St. CroixFalls.
Widiker noted thatthe squad is young
and has some growing to do, but thatcould also mean they surprise some folks.“Our weakness is we are a young teamand have plenty to learn yet. But I’m ex-cited to see how this team will progressand develop as the season gets underway,” she said.
The Tigers have five returning playerswho are all key, according to Widiker.“I’m looking for different contributionsfrom all five of them: Gabby Schiller, JillHolmstrom, Marissa Elliott, Alex Holm-strom, Raelyn Tretsven and ChristinaWeis,” she said. “Our strengths this sea-son are yet to be determined.”
Webster finished solidly in the middleof the pack last year, but also had somestrong upsets and made every set count.Widiker thinks they can again be a con-tender, and like most local coaches, rec-ognizes the quality of the conference, compared to some parts of the state.
“My outlook is that it should be atough conference as always with a lot ofgreat teams playing this season,” shesaid.

Vikings to hit theground running again
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
FREDERIC – After going through anentire season without a cross-countrypro-gram, the Frederic Vikings are backon the scene this season. Only four girls
are on the roster thisyear, but it’s a start toa program that usedto be one of the area'sbest in both boys andgirls.
“It was a group ofathletes that camethrough that werejust an athletic groupof kids that fed offeach other andpushed each other,”said new head coach
Jeff Larcom. “Now it's time to start some-thing new.”
Vikings junior Abigail Brightbill wason the team as a freshman and was in-strumental in bringing the program backthrough talking to administration.
“She’s our experienced cross-countryathlete. Everyone else is new to the pro-gram,” said Larcom, who has been coach-ing much of his life. He’s been theFrederic girls track coach for the pastseven years. Other girls include onefreshman, Nicole Nelson, and the twoother juniors, Tylyn O’Brien and RachaelPoirier.
“It doesn’t constitute a team (for
points), but it's four girls I get to take to ameet and they can compete,” Larcomsaid, but added that the girls are workinghard and improving steadily.
Larcom said he will start trying to workon recruiting middle school athletes aswell as encourage more athletes to joinonce the school year begins. At the end of
the school year last spring, he had severalboys thinking of going out for cross coun-try, but they decided to play football in-stead.
“From my perspective, if kids aredoing something, that’s good enough forme,” he said. “It’s the kids that aren’tdoing anything that maybe could gain
some stuff from the experiences in crosscountry. That’s what I’m after.”

Pirate boys will look to lead area teams again
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
GRANTSBURG – Head coach PaulHuskamp is in his ninth year as headcoach, and in that span, he’s taken fourteams to the state meet and coached twoindividual state champions. Last year wasone of the best as the boys team brought
home a state runner-up trophy, andHuskamp was hon-ored as District 1Coach of the Year.
“That was a sur-prising honor,” saidHuskamp, who hasanother great groupof boys coming backagain this season, despite losing fourtop seniors from theteam that went tostate last season.
Junior Jacob Ohnstad will be one of theteam leaders, but others that were a bigpart of last year’s success include theteam’s only senior, Sean Handy, sopho-more Richard Schneider and junior ErlandOlson.
“Some of the guys have been putting ina lot of miles this summer, and I’m excitedto see what their potential will be. Wehave some big shoes to fill after last year’ssuccessful season, but I think they’re
ready to step up and take on the role ofwhere we were last year,” Huskamp said.
The team was hoping for more kids thisseason and has a total of 12 boys and justfour girls.
“Some of the girls that ran last year saidno to this season. And some of the boys aswell,” Huskamp said, admitting that it isa little frustrating, but he’s ready to make
do with what they have, particularly withhis group of boys.
“We’re not going to have a real domi-nant runner, but we sure have a goodsolid pack running this year. That’s whatwins races too,” Huskamp said.

“The girls teamalso has the possibility to advance as ateam. Both Rice Lake and Bloomer (whoadvanced as teams last year to state) willbe the teams for us to watch for, but I’mnot going to rule out anything. If we workhard and keep our minds focused on thisultimate goal, anything is possible,” saidfourth-year head coach Jennifer Clemins.
Clemins should also be excited forsophomore Henry Klein on the boys team.He earned a spot at state last season andhas the potential to do it again this year.He took second overall at the Sherstad In-vite. With the majority of their veteranrunners back from last season, with excep-
tion of No. 1 and No. 2 runners on theboys and a top contender on the girlssquad, Clemins has good reason to bethrilled with what she has coming back.
“I’m super excited to get the racing sea-son under way and see what my athleteshave in store for us. I’m expecting somegreat personal-best performances and sus-pect I’ll be pleasantly surprised by myathletes continuously throughout the sea-son. I am fortunate to coach yet another

Unity/Luck boastsbetter numbers
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
BALSAM LAKE – The Unity/Luckcross country program is continually look-ing to build more numbers into the pro-
gram, and this yearis one of the bestsince Lori Andersonbegan her coachingcareer, especiallywith the boys.
Eight of the boyson the team this sea-son are freshmen, along with veteranrunners ColtonSorensen and ScottBever. Sorensen con-tinues his quest to
get to a state tournament again this seasonand barely missed his chance last season. But he and several others have been train-ing and working hard over the summer toimprove.
“Colton … he knows what he has to do
to make it to state, and I think he’s put thattime in,” said Anderson.
Sorensen is also a good role model forthe younger athletes, particularly at themiddle school level, which only makes theteam stronger. The team will also benefitin their close friendships.
“I think it’s because Colton is such agood leader and the camaraderie of theentire team. They’re friends. They getalong. They’re a little family,” Andersonsaid.
Of the six girls on the roster three areseniors, but eight of the 12 boys on the ros-
ter are freshmen and could provide a bigspark for the boys team.
“Good solid freshmen coming up,They’re inexperienced, but a lot of raw tal-ent, so it's really going to add to the team,”Anderson said.

Tigers look to newleader for success
by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer
WEBSTER – The Webster cross-countryteam has at least one significant changethis season in the absence of former coachJim Muus, who retired last season after
roughly 30 seasonswith the program.Muus created one ofthe strongest andmost successful pro-grams in the areaand brought home amultitude of tro-phies including arunner-up finish atthe state champi-onships in 2007 anda state champi-onship the follow-
ing year. But right alongside of Muus wascoach Roy Ward, who should have notroubles leading many more successfulcross-country teams in the future.
“Much of my success has been directlyrelated to coach Muus and the athletescommitment to themselves and the pro-gram. I have enjoyed watching athletesimprove and reach their individual goalsas well as being part of being the bestteam in the state in 2008,” Ward said.
The Tiger girls took third overall, andthe boys came in fourth place in the open-ing meet of the season and have a wholeseason to improve. The team has severalrunners back from last season including
Kally Schiller and Emma Kelby. Both sen-iors earned trips as individuals to the statemeet last season.
With about nine boys and eight girls,Ward has a set of teams to work with thisseason and will most certainly have thekids in top form by the end of the year, just as Muus had done over the past 30seasons.
“My biggest challenge is to fill JimMuus’ shoes. He was a great distance
runner himself, and he has taken kids tostate every year. I was fortunate to coachwith Jim since 1998. I would like to con-tinue his tradition of excellence. The teamsneed to do their best with who they have.Like every team we have the same obsta-cles to deal with. My hope is that throughgood coaching and peer leadership, at theend we are satisfied with the final out-come,” Ward said.

It’s a full house for
Luck/Unity golfby Marty Seeger
Leader staff writerLUCK – The biggest change for the
Luck/Unity golf team this season is in thenumbers. This will be the first year in sev-eral that they’ll have a full team compet-ing at matches, and with at least fourmatches golfed already this season, theteam has shown a lot of improvement.
“You can see improvement,” said coachRon Steen. “They want to learn, andthey’re having fun.”
Senior Avery Steen will once again leadthe team this season and she’ll be eyeing afourth consecutive trip to the state golfmeet in Madison.
“I hope she has a good year. I hope sheshoots well and is going to have fun,”Steen said.
Others include seniors Tina Lennartsonand Jena Alling, who have been with theteam since their freshman seasons.
The team has lured at least four othersfrom the volleyball team as well, whichhas helped to add more depth. Team“bests” are common now almost weekly, which is as good as it gets for any coach. The unfortunate thing about the seasonfor Luck/Unity is that they’ll once againbe playing without a conference. They
won’t have any home matches but will beplaying with the Heart of the North Con-ference once again. While they won’t beable to earn a conference title, they and St.Croix Falls, who is also without a confer-ence, team or individuals will still have ashot at qualifying for state as a team or in-dividuals.
Steen says that Hayward will be a teamto beat this season and have state poten-tial, while farther south in Osceola, CaseyDanielson will be looking for a fourth Di-vision 2 state championship.

ST. CROIX FALLS – The St. Croix Fallshad a down year last season due in part toonly two golfers showing interest in com-peting. One of those girls, McKenzie Katz-mark, is back again as a sophomore, andthe Saints have a handful more that willhelp make this season a bigger successunder coach Maria Gjovig, who is in hersecond season as head coach.
“The most exciting thing for me this sea-son is having more golfers to work withand expanding our program,” Gjovigsaid.
Other team members include seniorSamantha O’Brien and Taylor Orton aswell as sophomores Lindsey Wondra,Hayley Cermin, Megan Swenson andKamille Flandrena.
“Our returning sophomore, McKenzie, will be a big strength. Not only has hergame improved tremendously, she willalso be an asset in teaching the other girlsabout the courses we will be playing. Ad-ditional strengths will be our young, en-ergetic outlook,” Gjovig said.
Still after two seasons the Saints will notbe included in any conference other thantheir own, along with Luck/Unity’s golf
team. They won’t qualify for conferencepoints, nor a conference title in the Heartof the North Conference, but will be play-ing along on the various golf courses withthe Heart of the North throughout theshort fall season.
Gjovig, like other coaches, expect Hay-ward to be a solid team this season, andthe Hurricanes have proved that alreadyas many teams are in their fifth and sixthmatches. Meanwhile, St. Croix Falls looksto be continuing its growth and rebuild-ing on what has been a strong tradition ingirls golf for quite some time.
“I look forward to another growing sea-son and look forward to working with thisteam,” Gjovig said.

UNITY/LUCK TENNISUnity/Luck tennis
looks to stay compet-itive in Middle Border
Conferenceby Greg Marsten
Leader staff writerBALSAM LAKE – The cooperative
Unity/Luck tennis team returns to thecourt for 2012 with a solid group, both atsingles and in doubles.
Head coach Beth Fogarty returns for herfourth season at the helm, with returning
assistants Tom andJane Hoffman to as-sist at all levels andthe enthusiasm isstrong for the squadto do well in the for-midable MiddleBorder Conference, where they mayplay schools withmuch larger enroll-ments.
“We’re reallylooking forward to afun year,” Fogarty
said. The tennis season is among the first fall
sports to get under way, and theUnity/Luck squad already has some com-petitive court time, long before the sum-mer ends. So far, the two seniors, Anna
Ebensperger and Kelsy Johnson, and jun-ior singles standout Sierra Thomfohrdahave made their impact known, and with
the addition of Cass Hanson to varsity, they should be a strong singles team, asevidenced by an early singles sweep of
Durand.“I’m hoping that sets the tone for more
wins on the way,” Fogarty said. “I’m sohappy for their growth and drive to get tothe top.”
Fogarty and the Hoffmans continue towork with the Unity/Luck girls to maketheir doubles teams more cohesive andcompetitive, as some have only had lim-ited playing time together. They are hop-ing to get more wins as the seasonprogresses.
Fogarty has also mentioned her own ef-forts to have the teams and singles play-ers work to overcome unforced errors andmental focus to get them as solid as possi-ble.
The Unity/Luck squad plays theirmatches at the Unity tennis courts, butthey also have a growing rank of juniorvarsity squad players, with students fromboth school districts, which bodes well forthe future in several ways.
