T O N A S K E T - Mike Larson takes over as the Tonas-ket varsity girls basketball coach, and he’ll be the first to admit that he knows very little about his team.

Larson has been coaching the Tigers’ junior varsity boys for several years, meaning his teams played during the girls varsity games, and he was as-sisting the boys varsity while the girls JV played.

“At this point I actually know more about the boys teams than my own,” Larson says.

“Not only did I not get to see last year’s (girls) teams play, but we have a number of girls turn out this year that didn’t play last year.”

As much as anything, Larson was thrilled with the number of girls that turned out.

“We have 34 playing this year,” he says. “I don’t care where we finish as far as wins and losses go, that already makes this a suc-c e s s f u l s e a -son.”

O f course, L a r s o n h o p e s there w i l l b e m o r e

tangible signs of success as

the season progresses, and it could take some time for the

Tigers to adjust to a new sys-tem with a very inexperienced squad.

“It’s all about developing the right habits,” he says. “Both in practice and during the game, and that’s why we want our practices to simulate what it’s like during a game.

“We want to play fast, fast and faster. We want to press a lot, and the girls have never

been asked to do that before. So we’ll push the pace, we’ll make some mistakes, but we’ll take

what comes with it. They’re not comfortable with it yet, but they’ll get it.”

Larson will have at least two years with most of the girls cur-rently on his roster. Of the two seniors, Amber Kilpatrick last played basketball as a sopho-

more, and Ali Hill played JV last season. His returning players – juniors Devan Utt, Kelly Cruz, Alicia Edwards and Megan Bey-ers - either came off the bench last year or shuffled back and forth between varsity and JV.

“We’ll just take it one game at a time and take what comes,” Larson says. “More than wins and losses, it’s about getting all the players, from little kids to the seniors, playing the same style. It will probably take a couple of years to get us playing as fast as I’d like. Once we’ve been playing this way for awhile, we should be in there competing for playoff spots.”

TONASKET – The Tonasket boys basketball team has struggled to match up with other Cari-bou Trail League teams in recent years.

That doesn’t concern head coach Glenn Braman too much. He wants the Tigers’ focus to be internal rather than focusing on their opponents.

“Every team in the CTL is 0-0 right now,” Braman says. “No-body has played a league game yet. Of course, I know what they have, as each of them know what we have. I honestly don’t waste a lot of time thinking about other people’s teams. I need to keep focused on my team.”

Braman’s team returns just three players from last season – senior guards John Stedtfeld, Damon Halvorsen and Kevin Aitcheson.

That, in a nutshell, explains what fans will see from the Ti-gers this year. Their experience and much of their scoring will come from the perimeter. “We

need to be cons istent with our perim-eter shots,” Braman says. “If we can shoot 40 percent or more from outside (3-point range), we’ll be in good shape. Shooting 33 percent from out there is like shooting 50 percent from inside. We’re built to be that kind of a team.”

Stedtfeld and Halvors-en, along with sopho-more Dyllan Gage, give

the Tigers a number of outside shooting threats and insurance against one of them having a

cold night. And while the Tigers still

are on the small side, they did pick up a 6-4 freshman transfer from Idaho, Zac Davis, as well as sopho-more Trevor Terris, to

anchor down the mid-dle. Seniors Dakota

Bogart and Lazaro Ortega, while stand-ing under six feet, have proven to be solid assets down low, especially on

defense.“We set individual game goals

and team goals for each game,” Braman says.

“They’re usually tied to the little things we need to accom-plish. I want their goals to be tied to things we value, hustle and effort type stats, rather than scoring.”

In that spirit, the Tigers aim to hold opponents under 40 percent shooting, outrebound their op-ponents and commit fewer than 15 turnovers per game.

“Our motto is to focus on the little things to ensure that great things happen,” Braman says.

“We don’t need to worry about what other teams bring, and we can’t do anything about it. We’ll

concentrate on doing the little things right with our own team. That’s our goal.”

OROVILLE – The Oroville girls basket-ball team has never made the state tourna-ment.

Mike Bourn and his young but seasoned group of Hornets aim to break that unenviable streak this year, but it won’t be easy.

The Hornets came one win away from that elusive prize last year. But before they can think about navigating their way through the district tournament, they face a season of competing in a league that includes two of last year’s top four 2B girls bas-ketball teams at the top.

Central Washington League North Divis ion champion Brewster, unchallenged in 12 league games last year, finished fourth at the state 2B finals after many of the Bears contracted the flu during week of the tourna-ment. League runner-up Lake Roosevelt, which started its season 3-6, won 17 of its final 20 games, took third at state and came within one basket of play-ing for the state championship.

Brewster lost just three se-niors, including key starter Cori-na Gebbers, while the Raiders pulled off last year’s run without

a senior on their roster.“Brewster and Lake Roosevelt

are pretty much huge favor-ites,” Bourn says. “But then we should be right there. We have a great chance to finish in the top three.

“Lake Roosevelt last year showed what happens when everything comes together. They started playing well together, made a couple of game-win-ning shots and surprised some people.”

If the Hornets want to become this year’s Lake Roosevelt, they will need to pick up where they left off at the end of last season,

when they upset P a t e r o s t o e a r n a s h a r e of third place in the league and elimi-nated Kit-titas from post-season play at districts.

Na o m i P e t e r s and 3-point shooter Kelsey Hughes, both re-turning starters, are the only two returning seniors on this year’s roster.

“They’re both good play-ers,” Bourn says. “They’re very

serious about this season and have been showing some good

leadership.”Much will depend,

though, on a returning core of juniors that saw

plenty of action as sopho-mores. They include Bri-ana Moralez, Callie Barker, Katie Tietje and Becky Ar-

rigoni. And then there’s sophomore Sierra Speiker, a varsity regular as a freshman, whose defense shut down

Entiat scoring machine Mandy Southard at last year’s district tournament.

Bourn also has high hopes for freshman Lily Hilderbrand, who he said expects to make an impact right away.

“She could be one of the best

by to come through this area

by the time all is said and done (with her high school career),” Bourn says.

“We have some pretty nice depth and speed. We’re way ahead of where we’ve been the last couple years. Their funda-mentals have improved a lot; now we just have to work on some timing issues and building our confidence.”

And if that happens, a certain streak may indeed be near its end.

OROVILLE – Oroville’s boys basketball team had an up-and-down season a year ago.

Up-and-down may actually be an understatement. How else to describe a team that could lose by 50 points at home to Brewster, and then beat the state tournament-bound Bears on the road two weeks later?

The Hornets did play their best basketball at the end of last season, winning six of their final seven regular season games to finish in a three-way tie for sec-ond place in the Central Wash-ington League’s North Division and giving White Swan and Kittitas all they could handle in

a pair of tight district tourney losses.

With five key play-ers returning – in-cluding four start-ers – first-year head coach Allen Allie feels he has a team that can improve on last year’s finish.

“Our goal is to be in the top two in our league and make the state playoffs,” Allie says. “I think you need to set goals high but reachable. Our kids can reach their goal if they focus.”

A league title might be tough, as defending champion Lake Roosevelt returns most of a squad that finished fourth at last year’s 2B state tournament. The Raiders’ roster still includes University of Idaho-bound senior Ty Egbert, who at 6-8 last year dominated a league that doesn’t have anyone else of that size.

“When we are play-ing well I feel we can play with anyone in our league,” Allie says. “We can’t have many off nights or our goal will be hard to reach. I think most teams in our league match up pretty well, with the exception of Egbert.”

The other question mark heading into the season will be how well the team adjusts to the new style of play Allie is implementing, par-ticularly at the defensive end, where the Hornets will play more man-to-man defense than in the past.

The Hornets lost point guard Preston Iverson to graduation, but return the rest of their usual starting lineup intact. Se-nior Zack Speiker gives the Hornets and inside presence, while another senior, C.J. Mathews, provides additional re-

bounding and is most ef-fective while slashing to the basket. Juniors Michael Garrett and Con-

nor Hughes give Oroville a pair of legitimate 3-point threats who are each capable of busting out for 20 or more points a game, while sophomore Luke Kindred also saw some quality playing time at the varsity level as a freshman.

Depth, however, could be an issue as there is precious little varsity playing experience com-ing off the bench.

“We don’t have a deep or experienced bench,” says Allie.

“We’re going to rely on sopho-mores and freshmen to fill in as needed.”

The Hornets should be well-tested by the time they reach league play in January, as six of their eight non-conference

games are against larger schools, including a Christmas Break trip to Cashmere. But if they can stay healthy and their bench develops, the Hornets could be playing deep into February and possibly into March.

O R O V I L L E – Class B wres-tling took a turn to the tough side a year ago when Warden, among other schools, dropped out of the 1A ranks.

Not only did the Cougars go on to dominate the region and win the state championship, it meant that a number of state medallists from previous years didn’t even make the state finals last year.

That wasn’t all that worked against the Oroville wrestling team last year. Injuries and eligibility issues plagued the Hornets, and both are trends Chuck Ricevuto hopes to see his team reverse.

“We want to make sure every wrestler gets one percent bet-ter after each practice, and get all seniors to set an example of great leadership,” Ricevuto says.

Four of his seniors have state tournament experience. Nick Perez (145 pounds) has three state medals to his name, includ-ing one third place and a pair of state runner-up finishes.

Michael Lynch (138) has been to state twice, including runner-up finish in 2009, but last year was caught in the same weight

class as Perez and a pair of Warden wrestlers and saw his season end at regionals.

Alex Kelly (132) is also a

t w o -t i m e quali-fier, in-c l u d -ing a

fourth-place finish in 2010, but like

Lynch couldn’t get out of region-als. His regional weight class included a Warden wrestler and two Lake Roosevelt competitors who had dropped down from 1A the previous year, as well as

state champion Anfim Kalugin from Springdale.

Duke Sykes (170) also qualified for state last year at 171. Though he didn’t earn a medal, he lost 2-1 to the eventual state champion in

the semifinal round, and by one point in an elimination match.

Senior Alex Alvarez (152) nearly made the state finals last year, attending as an alternate.

Ricevuto listed five keys to

success that could make up the difference for those tough finishes last season: improve on last year’s practice attendance, get the seniors to show leader-ship, stay injury and illness-free, catch up on the last couple years of weight training, and stay clear of eligibility and athletic code issues.

The margin for error in the B tournament is very thin. But by living up to those goals could mean the Hornets send five or more to the state finals.

TONASKET – Teams with an overabundance of youth aren’t often considered dangerous, ex-cept in terms of their potential.

A notable exception to that rule is the Tonasket wrestling squad. All it takes is a look at the portraits of past state champions that line the practice room and the prodigious list of state med-allists that Hall of Fame coach Dave Mitchell has mentored through the years.

So when he says his young

t e a m s h ows promise, he’s to be believed.

“There ’s a lot of poten-tial,” Mitchell said after the Tigers’ first meet in which he sent six freshman and two sophomores to the mat. “There’s only one way for us to go. It’s just a matter of how soon we get there. In a couple of years we should be tough as nails, but I want to get there sooner than that.”

Despite graduating eight se-niors, the Tigers aren’t totally without some quality, experi-enced wrestlers. They have a sol-id core of returners that include seniors Jared Stedtfeld (pro-jected to wrestle at 113 pounds) and Ryker Marchand (132) – both state 1A tournament veterans – and junior state qualifier Austin Booker (152). Junior Dalton Wahl (138) and sophomore Collin Aitcheson (120) were regional qualifiers last year, while juniors Jeff Stedtfeld (126), John Rawley (195) and Dyllan Walton (132) were solid as well.

“We have a core of pretty tough guys,” Mitchell says. “We have several freshman and first year wrestlers who are looking

good and show a lot of prom-ise.”

The Tigers should again be Ca r i b o u T r a i l L e a g u e

title con-tenders, de-

pending both on how their

o w n t a l -e n t d e -

velops and on the health of a couple of other teams, most notably defending CTL champ Omak.

But getting through the league season, tough as it is, is only the beginning for the Tigers.

“We intend to battle all year,”

Mitchell says. “We want to im-prove and peak so we can be competitive in District, Region-als and State.”
