Sports Newsletter December 2018 Ki o Rahi – Junior Regionals For the first time St Bernard’s entered a team in the College Sport Junior Ki o Rahi event held on Thursday the 22 nd November at Ian Galloway Park. Despite the weather the boys did themselves and the school proud with 3 wins, two against Wellington College and one against Wellington High School, finishing a very impressive 3 rd in the Junior boys section. With only a short amount of time to prepare for the competition it is exciting to see how far we will be able to go at this tournament in the future! Big thanks to Hayden Mourits and Tui Bradbrook who assisted with coaching and managing the team and operating the BBQ. Touch – Junior Regionals The junior regional touch tournament took place on the 15th of November at Fraser Park. In a field of 12 teams from across Wellington our 11 strong Junior Squad made the final. The boys played six games in total, which was especially challenging due to the heat. In their pool, St Bernard’s managed to go through undefeated with some fantastic performances, most notably against a strong Upper Hutt College team. The final against St Patrick’s Silverstream provided a strong challenge and unfortunately, the team was just unable to take out the tournament, bringing home second place. St Bernard’s played some fantastic rugby with special mentions to Waka Moana and Theo Van Ooyen who played consistently all day. With a number of younger players in the side, St Bernard’s are looking strong to go a place better next year. Volleyball – Junior Regionals The College Sport Wellington regional junior volleyball tournament was held on 9 th and 10 th November at ASB Centre in Kilbirnie. St Bernard’s were drawn against Rongotai and Porirua in pool play. Comprehensive wins over both of these teams meant we qualified first in our pool and next up was a quarter final against St Patricks Silverstream 2 on the Saturday morning. Silverstream put our boys under pressure but we remained composed and stuck to our game plan winning this game, meaning we made the semi-finals. St Pat’s Town was our opponent in the semi-final, which went down to the wire. With the scores locked at one set all, it was all to play for in the final set with St Pats Town taking the set by two points. In the play off for 3 rd and 4 th, we had a good win over Rongotai College to finish 3 rd an excellent two days of volleyball.

Pahi Mateo and Isaac Hulbert were named in the tournament team. Congratulations to both boys.

Water Polo – NISS Junior Champs The St Bernard’s Junior Water Polo team attended the North Island Junior Water Polo Championships in Auckland from 22nd to 25th November. This was the first time in three years the junior Water Polo team had attended these championships. The team competed in Division Two. The team arrived on the 21st and settled into their accommodation. In the afternoon, the men went and watched St Patrick’s College Wellington play their annual traditional match against Liston College. St Patrick’s are a Division One team so the men were able to watch some high quality Water Polo. The team had to wait nearly 48 hours to play their first game of the tournament due to the scheduling of the draw by New Zealand Water Polo. In pool play the team came fourth having lost two games narrowly, meaning we missed the top eight. The pool matches taught the men they had to get the basics right in order to progress to the top eight. The second half of the tournament saw the team play in the 13th-16th section of the tournament. The team played much better and were able to win all their games in this section to finish 13th. This taught the men the importance of preparation for a tournament and making sure they were mentally and physically switched on at all times. There were teams in the 9th to 12th section that the St Bernard’s team could have beaten. Many thanks to Andrew Cavill for managing the team, Bradley Hudson for coaching the team, assisted by Year 13’s Braden Longstaff and George Roberts. Thanks to those parents who supported the team while in Auckland. I hope the men in the junior team continue to play water polo at the college. List of Matches: Pool Play: 13th to 16th Section Vs Auckland Grammar B, Lost 5-9 Vs Orewa College, Won 7-3 Vs South Auckland Invitational, Lost 3-9 Vs Long Bay High School, Won 9-1 Vs Green Bay High School, Lost 6-8 Vs Whangaparoa, Won 5-3
