Last year we finished 4th in BUCS for the second consecutive year, very closely
followed by our biggest rivals, Exeter!
This year will see some amazing competition take place with 4 teams promoted to the
league above, two of which are going
to Premier: Women’s Tennis and
Men’s Lacrosse!
Of course, BUCS is not the only competition or activity at this university.
Our social programme has seen a huge increase in numbers and we are
now looking at some massively successful recreational sessions in over 12
different sports. You can already look forward to Sports Day on Wednes-
day 25th September!

Handover:
I got back from basketball tour at 2am on Sunday 9th June and the
next morning I had to be on campus at 9am for the start of a 2 week
intensive handover. Let’s just say I am considering timetabling nap
time into next years schedule! The other 4 officers and myself were
put through workshops about the SU, I even had to take an exam!
All in all we’ve got a great team surrounded by amazing staff so feel
free to approach any of us for any information!
BUCS Conference:
Held in Edinburgh this year, I was not expecting
30° C and sunshine all week long! Got to meet
my equivalents in loads of other universities and
proud to be elected as South West Student
Officer, representing our region at the national BUCS Advisory
Group! I also attended some talks on disability sport which triggered
some ideas to bring back to Bath this year…
NUS Training - Leading Active Student Involvement:
This 3 day training at Keele University was incredibly intense. Putting
over 90 Sport and Activities Officers together in the same room is
not the best way to ‘keep calm’. Lots of ideas were thrown at us,
going from making students more employable to making sports
clubs accessible to all, and lots of these will be embedded in every-
thing I plan to do this year. Made loads of useful contacts for the
year coming, and obviously Scott and I topped it off with a fantastic
performance at Karaoke night:
Aqua, Barbie Girl.
A summer in the life of the Sport Officer:
Things to look forward to this year
Freshers’ Week
23rd - 29th September
Calling all students starting university
in September: this week will be an
amazing week with lots of events
planned! Freshers’ night on campus
every night, Sports Day, Activities Day,
tours around town,... you name it!
There will be over 200 volunteers
working day and night to make it the
best week of your life so sit back and
enjoy!

Score
Every Wednesday
Following the weekly BUCS fixtures
on Wednesday afternoons, Score is
the night that brings our sports clubs
together. The Plug & The Tub is the
biggest club venue in Bath hosting
over 1000 students, and last year the
tickets were sold out almost every
week in less than a day!

Snowball
4th/5th December
This black tie event held in town is the
celebration of a semesters’ worth of
sporting achievements. It is fully
organised by the SU Sport Exec, a
group of committed volunteers that
support the work of the Sport Officer.
Last year’s Snowball had a silent dis-
co, photo booth and live music all
night, and I can tell you by experience
that both nights were pretty epic!
Perform well in the start of term and
you may even become club/team of
the semester!

Varsity
March/April
All of our fixtures and tournaments
against other universities are
extremely competitive, but when we
play against Exeter it’s a whole other
ball game. Our first teams in Premier
clash in Netball, Hockey, Rugby Union
and more! This all cumulates to a
massive multi-sport event at the end
of the year where the trophy of Best
of the West is handed out to the
overall winner. Needless to say we
won the last two years...
This is what Tom Janicot, your Students’ Union Sport Officer, has been up to in preparation to what is promising to be another amazing year for sport! There
were three main events in the summer, this is his experience:
