“ “ The Great Jewish Read Continues!” As we begin a new year I wanted to offer the members of our congrega-tion an invitation. For the last four years I have facilitated a “Book Discussion Group.” We meet on alternative Tuesday mornings at 11 o’clock and we have delved into many fascinating books ranging from historical overviews to a comi-cal appraisal of life in Israel. This year I asked the group to help me select the next book we would discuss. We had several good choices, among them a new book on the history of divisiveness in American Judaism by Steven Weisman ti-tled, The Chosen Wars, a memoir by the intellectual Stefan Zweig, The World of Yesterday, and reflections of life during the Shoah, Hasidic Tales of the Holo-caust. Any of these books would certainly command our attention and perhaps we will get to them in the future. However the group decided upon a unique book that caught my interest last year when it was first published. The book is titled, If All the Seas Were Ink, by Ilana Kurshan. Ms. Kurshan, in a remarkable and reflective memoir, shares her story of struggle, challenge and, ultimately triumph, as she recounts her experience alone in Jerusalem fol-lowing a painful divorce. Interestingly enough, she found solace from her loneli-ness through joining, quite literally, the world’s largest book club, learning daf yomi, Hebrew for “daily page” of the Talmud. The Talmud is a book of rabbinic teachings spanning about 500 years and is the basis for all the codes of Jewish law. A literary editor by profession, attuned with an ear for poetry and literature, Kurshan discovered both a com-munity and a passionate attachment to its several thousand pages. Her book is a poignant memoir as well as a brilliant introduction to the world of the Talmud and its rabbis and will leave the reader moved, enlightened and intellectually challenged. We already have a number of students in our group, but if you find any of this of interest, please let me or Phyllis know. I will gladly order you a copy of the book and welcome you to our wonderful group of literary seekers. Our next class meets on November 6th and you are most welcome.

President’s Message
This is a very busy time at the Synagogue. Following a very successful
Sukkah Brunch thanks to Linda Benish and her faithful helpers, the
various adult education programs are now in full swing. They are:
Rabbi’s Book Discussion (Rabbi Mishkin)
Pirkei Avot (Rabbi Mishkin)
Talmud Class (Rabbi Mishkin)
Jewish Prayer (Linda Benish)
Jewish Humor (Stan Perlman)
Just check the Newsletter and Weekly Announcements for the days and
times of each class.
The weekend of November 2nd is our Scholar in Residence Shabbat. We are
very fortunate to have Rabbi Seth Frisch join us for services Friday night
and Saturday morning.
On Sunday, November 11th at 2pm is our 3rd annual Global Day of Jewish
Learning held at the East Brunswick Library. The feedback from the pre-
vious ones has been outstanding. I would recommend you get there early
as it gets very crowded.
All of the above is due to the outstanding work by our Programming
Chairperson and the few who volunteer to help. If this is to continue in the
future, we need you to step up to help run some of the programs.

of the prayers we read at services and discover the logic, structure and beauty of the services we attend.

Hello Everyone,
Congregation Beth Ohr has partnered with Community Recycling and their Shoe-
Box Recycling program. Together we are on a mission to help promote the im-
portance of shoe recycling while raising funds to help further our efforts. ShoeBox
Recycling is easy, engaging and rewarding for everyone involved.
Participating is simple. We are collecting gently used shoes for reuse, meaning all
the shoes we recycle as a group are destined for another home. From South Ameri-
ca and Africa to areas right here in the United States, our ShoeBox Recycling ef-
forts will go to help people and communities in over 50 countries.
And what’s even better is the many ways that our community benefits as well. Not
only will your recycled shoes help Congregation Beth Ohr raise funds, it will also
help keep usable shoes out of our local landfills. ShoeBox Recycling also gives us
a chance to connect with the people and places that receive our recycled shoes. By
writing a SoleMate Note to include with your shoes, you can let their new owner
know about where they came from, what they were used for, or even any special
memories attached to them. In return, they can write back to us and we can make a
SoleMate connection.
So start cleaning out your closets and start looking under your bed for gently used
shoes. Every pair you recycle means extra funds for us, less landfill waste and the
potential to connect us to a SoleMate!
For more information contact Allan Benish at [email protected] and check out
Community Recycling online at www.communityrecycling.biz.
You can drop off your shoes at the synagogue and place them in the box labeled
“SHOES” in the lobby during regular office hour of 9:00AM to 3:00PM.
Please see next page for What Is and What Is Not allowed

ROBERT NAGLER
Comments by Ed Mendlowitz
Bob will be missed. He was an integral part of Beth Ohr and the Men’s Club. His
friendship was genuine and his accomplishments many and varied. As part of the Con-
gregation’s Dinner Dance Committee he consistently was one of the top 3 major sellers
of ads and also arranged for Mayor Jim Phillips to be our Man of the Year at our ex-
tremely successful dinner/dance in 2005. Bob served on the Temple’s Board of Direc-
tors, and was instrumental in my becoming Men’s Club president so I could rejoin the
Temple Board.
He organized an annual car trip to Atlantic City after the Men’s Club stopped running
its bus trip. He also organized an investment club, a bi-weekly card game, and the
weekly R.O.M.E.O.s lunch group. He was a regular at the Sunday Minyan and never
missed simchas on Shabbos and served on the Men’s Club board. He was the Beth
Ohr Men’s Club Man of the Year at the annual FJMC dinner in 2006.
His grandchildren—Erica and Matthew—became regulars when they visited Bob and
were awarded “Honorary Men’s Club” memberships. They even learned to blow the
Shofar, with an assist from Rabbi Mishkin. Bob never tired about talking about his
four grandchildren, Erica, Matthew, Zoey and Zachary, and his daughters Valerie and
Jill and her husband.
Bob lived a full life and his many stories covered different stages of his experiences
that included growing up in the Bronx in the shadow of Yankee Stadium and meeting
all the players, playing in Gaelic Park, being a successful stock broker and hospital
controller, and an all around great guy always looking for opportunities to help wher-
ever he could.
Bob will be missed, but his imprint is deep and indelible. God Bless You, Bob.
On this and the following page are some photos of Bob at his favorite Beth Ohr
activities.
