If you are already a customer of Split Butte, you understand the philosophy that has gone into the selection and breeding decisions that have built this herd.The goal of Wynn, Garrett and Ron has been to produce sound, functional cattle that can thrive in any environment. They have utilized the breed’s bestavailable genetics and have paid close attention to improving individual performance and EPDs while maintaining the phenotype that allows their cattle toexcel in the show ring and produce the kind of calves that top the market. These are real world cattle that have been managed and developed to be lowmaintenance and problem free.

While we are thankful for the wet winter, it did make it problematic for getting the bulls photographed for the catalog, so all of the offering will be videoedby March 1. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we invite you to the annual bull sale! Hereford cattle

continue to gain favor around the country, as proven in Hereford sale attendance and the rise of bull sale

averages across the country. Baldy steer calves continue to outperform straightbred calves, and the baldy

females are in more demand than ever. At Split Butte, we have long considered the bulls we produce

the “bread and butter” of our program. is group of bulls is no different; they have the genetics for the

most discriminating purebred breeder to the most pro@t-demanding commercial cattleman!

e Hereford bulls offered in the sale are out of some of the best Hereford cows in the breed. ey are

a very powerful group of “real world” yearling and two-year-old bulls that were developed in the high

desert conditions here in Southern Idaho. As calves, these bulls were run on our BLM allotment and

then developed on low energy rations. Our cow herd, in conjunction with arti@cial insemination and

embryo transplant, offers stacked pedigrees in addition to important performance data. e many half,

three-quarter and full brothers make the group very consistent with little difference from top to bottom.

For the @rst time, we are offering a select group of Angus bulls from Split Butte. ese bulls are the result

of progeny from two groups of Angus cows we purchased last year. ese cows came from solid Angus

programs—Pollard Farms of Waukomis, OK, and Heritage Cattle of Buhl, ID. e Angus bulls have

been through the same rigorous culling process as the Hereford bulls and are very solid. ese bulls are

sired by breed-leading Angus sires, including Consensus 7229, Bismarck 5682 and Hoover Dam.

e open commercial heifers in this offering came right off the top of our 600-head commercial cow

herd and are top replacement females sired by Split Butte herd sires.

e bred heifers in the offering are a very uniform set of black baldy females that were AI bred to

Bandwagon 3150, a low birth Angus sire. Many will have calves already at side by sale day…a rare

buying opportunity here!

We would like to once again this year welcome Bruce and Linda Sharp of OJJ Ranch as our guest

consignors, as well as George and Karen Sprague of Bar One Ranch. Both of these ranches are @rst class

operations, with much of their genetic base originating from Split Butte cattle. Both have been very

aggressive with their sire selections. Most of the bulls in their offerings are sired by current leading

Hereford sires. e bulls from OJJ and Bar One have been here at Split Butte; they have been fed, cared

for and will have the same guarantee as our bulls.

Final ReportExecutive Summary

Project Outline• Four hundred Angus-based cows were randomly mated to 10 Hereford and 10 Angus bulls under typical Western range extensiveconditions in year one of a three-year project. In years two and three, the project was expanded to include 600 cows and 15 bulls ofeach breed. As much as possible, bulls that were above average for the major expected progeny differences (EPDs) of each breedwere purchased, based on criteria provided by Lacey Livestock (ranch owners). Note: Four of the bulls were Split Butte bulls.

General Conclusions• 297 Angus-sired steers and 284 Hereford-sired steers were included in the final analysis.

• Pre-weaning performance had a slight but consistent advantage for Hereford-sired calves (approximately 10 lb. and $12 per head).

• Backgrounding performance had a slight but consistent advantage for Hereford-sired calves (approximately 10 lb. and $12 per head).

• Average daily gain (ADG) in the feedlot favored the Hereford-sired calves in two of the three years, and there was a very slight overalladvantage to the Hereford-sired calves.

• Feed conversion (as fed and dry matter) had a consistent and marked advantage for Hereford-sired calves in comparison to the predominantly straightbred Angus.

• Cost of gain had a consistent and marked advantage for Hereford-sired calves in comparison to the predominantly straightbred Angus.

• Morbidity was close to equivalent for both breed groups, with lower morbidity for the Hereford-sired calves in two of the three years.

• Quality grade consistently favored the Angus group for all three years.

• There were essentially no differences in carcass weight or yield of both sire groups.

• There were essentially no differences in percentage yield grades 4 or 5 between the sire groups. Hereford-sired calves had moreyield grade 4/5 in year one, and Angus-sired calves had more yield grade 4/5 in years two and three.

• Economic performance favored Hereford-sired calves in the feedlot in two of the three years, with an average return of approximately$30 per head.

• Carcass performance favored the Angus-sired calves in all three years, with an average return of $15.60 per head.

• Overall net return for the Hereford-sired calves was approximately $30 per head in a vertically coordinated beef marketing system.This does not include the maternal advantages of the baldy female.

• Pregnancy rates for Hereford-sired females (black baldies) averaged 7% higher than those of the Angus-sired heifers.
