I told you we were going to have a bunch of construction going on this year. All you have to do is drive through the gate and you can see it. There is going to be more. We will be seeing more handicapped parking places, we will see many more projects going on and all they will do is make this range, your range, much better than it was not that many years ago. The one item I must give compliments to is the way the membership is taking care of the range. In addition, when something is broken, someone gets notified. In addition to telling someone about a problem, put in on paper. Just use one of the range incident reports to write your observations. The cone showing which bay is in use is working. I might add, just because a bay is in use does not mean you can’t go in to see if you can share it. I say this because we often have police and other disciplines taking up several of the bays. Besides, sharing is good. We get a chance to meet other members and, more often than not, make a new friend. On to work bond. Keep calling to declare your ability to come on out to help on work bond Saturday. It gives me an idea about what I will be able to get done the next day. By the way, if you are wondering why we are patching up the OSB board it is because the stuff is getting a bunch more expensive. We are going to have to find a way to mount targets besides using plywood or particle board. Forget plastic type boards: way too expensive for our use. A way will be found and you may be the one to make the sug- gestion. So give it some thought and send it on to the Board. Just one more item and it is a negative. I noticed something white up on the 200 yard line. When I went up to check it out I found a steel target that was badly shot up. As a matter of fact, there was a hole shot through it. Not good. In addition the steel was badly cratered so I removed it from the range. If you want it back just give me a call and I will give it back to the owner. No problem. It just brings to mind that when we bring something out to the range to shoot, take it home. Don’t leave your trophies out here for someone else to pick up. Bottom line we are all doing a great job to keep a great range great. Thanks to all. On to trap. With the weather starting to get better I am seeing more shooters and we are having nothing but fun. I have made a decision to change the way I run the trap during trap nights. After having some dif- ficulties with getting things moving, I no longer shoot during trap time. I see to it that the shoots are run simple and fast. That way, we are able to get more shooters shooting. I guess what I am saying is that I have really taken charge of the trap so our members can come out and just have fun Now for the broken record. We hope to see more juvenile shooters out here. The ones that do show up are doing quite well. There are one or two who would give most of our members a real run for their money. The kids start shooting at 6:00pm and only shoot fifty rounds. I am trying to keep the cost down for the parent of the kids until I find a sponsor. We have shotguns to lend and ammo to sell to the kids and the club is paying for the birds (we are still making a profit). So send a neighbor, your child, your grandchild, or a friend of one or the other out to shoot. Just tell them it is better than a video game because they will really feel something happening and see something break that they will not get in trouble for. Besides that, they will get some fresh air. For the rest of you, come out and give it a try. See ya at the range and shoot lots of bullets. Don Arnold MaChiNE GuN shOOt Spring will be here soon and that means it is time to start planning for the Saddle Butte Machine Gun shoot. The shoot will be held on May 15th and 16th (third weekend).

Every year we get larger and better and it takes a lot of volunteers to make this a safe and enjoyable event.

Volunteers will be needed to serve as Range Of ficers, balloon/target setters, tee shir t sales, setup/take down (Friday 14th and Monday 17th) and gate/parking lots. This year only those volunteers who sign up be-fore May 1st to work both the Saturday and Sunday of the shoot will receive a tee shirt.

Anyone interested in helping please con-tacted Allen Eriksen at [email protected] (weekends phone 541-967-4005). Please include your full name, phone number, days volunteering to work and shirt size if volun-teering for both the 15th and 16th.

This is a great way to get your work bond hours. Don’t worry if you have lit tle or no experience with Machine Guns. We will teach you everything you will need to know to help out. 6422

Albany Rifle and Pistol Club is one of the driving forces behind the Mid Valley Friends of NRA Banquet on May 15th at Spring Hill Country Club. Our junior programs have received funding for various projects over the last three years. We are the largest shooting facility in the Mid-Willamette Val-ley and we should be supporting this great program. Salem will not have a banquet this year, so if you live in or around Salem please attend our Friends of the NRA Ban-quet. 19222

The Mid Valley Friends of NRA Banquet starts at 5pm, right af ter the Saddle Butte Machine Gun Shoot ends on Saturday. If you want a fantastic meal, in a wonderful setting, with friends who love firearms, and a chance to win a gun or two, then why don’t you give the club office a call and order your tickets? $35 per person for both dinner and a great cause is a good deal. If you want to support the banquet with a sponsorship or donation then we would like to talk to you.

safEty ruLEs tO rEMEMbEr1. Every gun is ALWAYS loaded. No matter how many times you check a gun to see if it is load-

ed or watch someone else check it, you must ALWAYS check to make sure it is unloaded when you touch a gun.

2. NEVER put your finger on the trigger until your sights are on the target. Handling a gun with your finger on the trigger is asking for trouble. Your finger goes outside the trigger guard until your sights are on the target and you are ready to shoot.

3. NEVER point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy. This goes for fruit, f lower, steel, wood, paper, clay, animal or human and it doesn’t matter if you think the firearm is un-loaded. Remember rule #1.

4. ALWAYS be aware of the environment surrounding your target. It may look like there is a good backstop; however, bullets travel long distances and can ricochet of f into directions you would never think possible.

5. ALWAYS wear your safety gear around firearms. It doesn’t matter if someone else is shoot-ing, guns can blow up and shrapnel can fly around when bullets hit hard objects. You may not have a problem but someone across the range might. 19213

MuzzLE uP“Muzzle Up” is a new safety slogan that you will hear more and more about. When moving long guns around on the range it is important to carry uncased guns with the muzzle up. Remem-ber “Every Gun is Al-ways Loaded” and, no, we don’t want a round accidentally going of f in any direction, but we also don’t point guns at other people. If you are carrying an uncased rifle or shotgun around on any ARPC range please keep the “Muzzle Up” and not pointed in someone’s direction.

WatCh fOr yOur GatE Card NuMbEr

Your gate card has a number printed on it. Each month we include three club member gate card numbers imbedded in newsletter articles. If you find your num-ber before the 11th of the month for which the newslet ter is printed, you will win a new ARPC hat. Just call the of fice (541-491-3755) when you see your gate card number and keep reading the newsletter each month.

raNGE MastEr rEPOrtWeather gets bet ter every day to go out and shoot, especially on the north range. The new target stands that replaced the old metal stands seem to be working well for mem-bers. I do find it hard to imaging some stands in Bay 1 have already been dented by misguided rounds. Please think about where your misses go if you don’t hit the target and protect range equipment.

Bays 8 through 12 are open on the north/east range. You can drive your vehicles up to these bays and unload your gear but we ask you to park on the gravel area at the end of the road past Bay 7. If you are using one of the covered bays please remember that we do not lock the doors and we share bays with other members. Just because you are in a bay it doesn’t mean that is your bay unless you are renting it.

During the week it looks like law enforce-ment agencies use the entire north range because of the number of vehicles parked along the north range road. Most of the time law enforcement is only using bays 3 and 6 for training. Please feel free to call the of fice about bay use and scheduling, at any time, 541-491-3755.

The archery area should be finished soon and available for use. Please watch for signs at the front gate when it becomes available. In addition, follow all safety rules and directional signs when using the ar-chery range. Safety is just as important when using a bow and arrow as it is with a firearm. Mike McCarter

Rangemaste

NOrth raNGE tarGEt staNds

Over the next few months the club will be changing the style of target stands members use on the north range. The new stands will require using two 4’ long 1x2” pieces of wood to attach targets to (see the picture). The stands will be available in each bay but members will need to bring in their own 1x2’s to make the stands work. 1x2’s will be available for sale in the club’s Pro Shop or they can be purchased at any lumber supplier like Home Depot. Once purchased they are your sticks, so keep them with your shooting gear and bring them to the range with you each time you shoot.

The metal stands that have been used in the past on the north range have been shot to pieces. We want to give the benefit of the doubt that most of our members are good shots, but some members like to hang things on the stands or place plastic bottles on the target holders with lit tle thought to bullet damage to the stand behind their target. If you, the member, own the target sticks behind the targets then you can shoot the stick to pieces if you want and the rest of the club members don’t have to pay for it. .

MaiN raNGE CLassrOOM COMPLEtE

It has taken longer than expected to fin-ish the interior facelif t on the main range classroom. Thanks to many members who pitched in on work bond time and a few who put in numerous hours to see the project completed.

We will continue adding some pictures and old firearms to the room as items are do-nated. Two members have donated old firearms and as soon as we get a secure mounting system in place they will be added to the décor. We also want to thank the general membership for their patience dur-ing the remodel and everyone’s flexibility during the dif ferent phases of construction.

We have now created a room that gives a wonderful first impression to new members and visitors. Please take the time to visit the newly refurbished main range clubhouse.
