Here at ARPC we have the projects! Here is a short list of the projects we have going. 1) The north range parking is moving along very well, we will have the property lines surveyed soon, our lawyer will draw up a purchase agreement, and signa- tures are about all that’s left. This purchase adds 1 acre of land to our northern property line and will allow side by side parking across from Bays 1 thru 7, plus eliminate the trip down to the end of the road to turn around. 2) The archery range is laid out and all we are waiting for is the okay from Linn Co. to use our land on the NE corner for archery use. In addi- tion, we have applied for a ODF&W grant to purchase 3-D targets and supplies to equip the archery area. 3) It appears that we have received a gift of three new clay bird throwers for our 5 Stand discipline from Willamette Valley Sportsman Association. We want to take the time to thank WVSA and all of its members for this gift which will dramatically improve the 5 Stand discipline. 4) We are accepting bids to put sound / weather structures on the east range to provide sound and shooting cover for bays 8 through 12. 5) For those of you who have had problems get- ting in the electronic gate in the past, we are in the process of updating our gate system and that should be completed shortly. This update provides better software and improved hardware to meet our needs. As you can see we have a busy schedule ahead of us this summer, so please be patient with us as we work through these projects. Protect” that is the job of police departments.

These are just a few nuggets that are worth paying attention to and I would recommend Thunder Ranch to anyone who wants to learn more about shooting and self defense. I would also like to thank Clint, Heidi and Scott for their attention to details, safety and concerns for those who take necessary steps to protect themselves.

suMMEr tiME FuNWe have put up with the winter and spring rains and now is the time to enjoy the range without wearing all the heavy coats and rain gear. It is also the time to see if you want to take a look at one of our regular shooting disciplines at ARPC. Here are short de-scriptions of some of these disciplines. If you see one and want to find out more about it then give the discipline director a call. Remember that all shoot-ing events are open to members and non-members.

BeNcHReSt – Benchrest is rif le shooting (both rimfire and centerfire) of f the shooting benches on the main range on the 4th Saturday of most months. These guys really like to shoot small groups on targets at 50 yards for rimfire and 200 yards for centerfire. Contact Jim Johnson (541-758-7364) for rimfire and Terry Wright (541-491-1201) for centerfire.

BlAck  POwDeR – Black powder shooting, both traditional and modern, is held on the 1st Sunday of each month at 12 noon in bay 12. Not only do these folks have a great time shooting at a variety of steel, paper and clay targets but they usually have some pretty good food cooking too. If you want to see what it is like to shoot a black powder gun or learn more about this type of shooting come on out. The contact person for this type of shooting is Ed Eriksen at 541-926-7570.

BOwlINg PINS – If you thought it was easy to hit a bowling pin with a 16lb. bowling ball try hitting it and knocking it of f the table with a 230grain .45 caliber bullet while another person right beside you is trying to do the same thing on their table. This is bowling pin shooting: person against person trying to clear all 5 pins of f your own table and knock down the stop plate before the person next to you does the same. All calibers of handguns are allowed. During the summer bowling pins shoot twice a month on the second and fourth Thursday evenings at 6pm in bay 3. The contact person for Pin shooting is Bill Manghelli at 541-935-2019.

DefeNSIve HANDguN – Defensive Handgun was started several years ago to provide an organized method to practice shooting from a concealed carry position. This is not a competition; it is an organized practice session that adds a lit tle stress and time measurement to defensive shooting. Two targets at about 7yds, 2 good hits on each target and most of the time you are shooting from behind a barricade. Defensive handgun takes place on the 4th Sunday of every month at 1pm. The contact person for De-fensive Handgun is John Matlock at 541-570-2081.

fIve StAND – Five Stand shooting is a cross be-tween Sporting Clays and Trap shooting. Five Stand uses multiple clay target machines to throw a wide variety of clay birds for those who like to shoot shot-guns in a more realistic format. This is excellent practice for bird hunting or just having fun with a shotgun. Five Stand takes place on the 2nd Satur-day and 4th Sunday every month at 1pm on the Trap Range. Contact for this shooting sport is Tom Smith at 503-474-7579.

full AutO – Full Auto shooting takes place on the second Sunday of every month in Bay 6 on the North Range. This is pistol caliber full autos only using steel and paper targets. If you want to see a shooting

sport that goes through large quantities of ammuni-tion then stop out and take a look at this sport. The Full Auto contact is Rob Dugger at 503-650-6599.

HIgH  POweR – High Power rif le shooting takes place on the third Saturday of the month from spring through fall. This competition uses rifles most often used by the military with iron sights (scoped is a separate division) and a five round capacity. Most competitors use AR type rifles but there is a mix of M1 Garands and other high power rifles at these competitions. The contact person for High Power is John Osterholm at 541-928-3488.

I.c.O.R.e. – ICORE stands for International Confed-eration of Revolver Enthusiasts and, yes, that means revolver shooting. This is action shooting with a revolver on paper and steel targets that requires movement at times for both the competitor and the target. If you like a wheel gun this is the sport for you. ICORE shoots on the third Saturday of each month at 9am on the north range. Contact for ICORE is Paul Johnson at 541-928-6976 or Mike McCarter at 541-619-0038.

INDOOR  PIStOl – members of the indoor pistol league shoot .22 caliber pistols on the indoor range beginning in the fall and running through the late spring in the Willamette Valley. Contact for Indoor Pistol is Paul Manghelli at 541-653-6201.

JuNIOR RIfle – Junior Rifle is open to all juniors who want to shoot air and .22 rifles in competition. During the cooler months practice and competitions are held on the indoor range. and during the sum-mer months part of the shooting moves outdoors onto the main range. Normally scheduled Junior Rifle events take place every Saturday beginning at 9:30am. The contact for Junior Rifle is Barbara Shew at 541-451-2047.

JuNIOR  SMAllBORe – Junior Smallbore is .22 caliber shooting on the indoor range in the cooler months and on the outdoor range during the sum-mer every Thursday evening at 6pm. This is a great place for juniors to have fun shooting a .22 caliber firearm. Contact Mark Baur at 541-405-1069.

lADIeS  PROgRAM – Nadine Manghelli leads a group of ladies who enjoy shooting together on the third Tuesday evening of every month at 6:30pm. During the winter the ladies use the indoor range and during the summer months they move outdoors. Ladies, if you want to experiment with shooting dif-ferent firearms around a group of ladies give Nadine a call at 541-935-2019.

MultI-guN – Multi-gun shooting competitions test your skills with rifle, pistol and shotgun on paper and steel targets. A course of fire may use one gun, two guns or all three guns depending on the layout and design of the course. Multi-gun matches are on the 2nd Sunday almost every month, and the contact is Robert Wright at 503-551-7283.

OlD weSt – Have you ever wanted to dress up like a person who lived a hundred years ago in the old west? Well here is your chance to both dress up like the 1800s, carry two old west revolvers, a shotgun and a lever action rifle. Old West shoots on the third Sunday and the fourth Saturday of every month beginning at 9am on the north range. If you have questions about Old West shooting contact Patrick Reagan at 541-259-2774.

SeNIOR SMAllBORe – Every Wednesday evening fall through spring the indoor range is open to .22 caliber rifle shooting for adults. If you looking for a place to shoot in the bad weather then check out this smallbore action on the indoor range. Senior Small-bore contact is James DiNardo at 541-367-4033.

SPeeD Steel – Speed Steel shooting is an event

that tests your speed and accuracy with a handgun on steel plates set at various distances and pat-terns. Take the best five shooting runs in a stage and throw out the worst time, keeping the best four runs for your score. Speed Steel is held on the 4th Sunday of every month at 9am on the north range. You can shoot any pistol in this sport including .22 caliber. Contact for Speed Steel is Paul Johnson at 541-928-6976.

SPORteR RIfle – Sporter Rifle is a new event at ARPC that involves shooting .22 caliber rifles from three dif ferent positions at paper targets placed at 25 and 50 yard distances. Both iron sighted and scoped rifles are allowed. These matches are nor-mally held at 1pm on the 2nd Sunday of every month on the main range. The contact for this event is Mike McCarter at 541-619-0038.

tRAP – Things you wanted to know about Trap but didn’t really care to ask.

Trap is THE oldest shotgun shooting sport known. It started in the late 18th century by shooting live birds thrown out of a bird trap. The shooter said “pull” and someone would pull a cord to pitch the live bird out. (Hard on Birds) If the bird got away it was called Lost. If got hit it was Dead. As times changed they moved onto glass balls and then to pitch “birds” which finally gave way to the present day bird. Some of the his-tory is still carried on to this day. A hit bird is dead and missed bird is lost. The most common word to pull a bird is still used. However, you will hear some term as “up”, “ugh”, “bird”, “hiya” “hike” and some others. This can lead to problems when a puller hear someone burp or pass gas, he will pull a bird.

At the ARPC we mainly shoot games. If someone wants to shoot a straight round of trap we are happy to accommodate your request. Don’t be surprised if some of the other shooters elect to join your straight round. If you bust 25 straight, I give your money back. I have had to do that just twice in five years, so good luck. Games cost a dollar if you are a member and $2.50 if you are a member. If not, ad fifty cents. 19036

I realize most folks do not want to shoot games but I will tell you this. You will learn how to shoot and hit birds at a fast rate by shooting those funny games. The only other thing I can tell you all, especially rifle shooters who strive for consistency and accuracy, the only thing consistent about shotgun shooting, is that nothing is constant. So come out and see the clubs new facility at the shotgun range. It makes a wonderful club house and a GREAT classroom. (You can thank our club and the ODF&W for the funds to do it). The contact for Trap shooting is Don Arnold at 541-619-3238.

uSPSA Action Pistol – Have you ever thought about racing a handgun, well this is exactly what Action Pis-tol shooting is about, racing handguns. All types of handguns .38 caliber and larger are allowed. Targets consist of paper, metal and moving steel or paper. Every time you shoot a match there are six dif ferent stages to test your shooting skills. USPSA Action Pistol matches are held on the second Saturday of every month at 9am on the north range. The contact for Action Pistol is Mike McCarter at 541-619-0038.

2009 aNNuaL rENEWaLApril 1st is the renewal date for all individual and family memberships. If you haven’t renewed your membership you can still do it by mailing it to the ARPC post of fice box address, dropping it of f at the club house (put it in the black mailbox next to the range officer room which is close to the indoor range) or calling the club of fice and renew over the phone with a credit card.

As of the 1st of May all delinquent members will

have their gate cards turned of f and their cards will not open the gate to get into the club. This does not mean that your membership is cancelled, it is only in “delinquent” status. You can still return it to active status by paying your full dues anytime dur-ing the year. If you do not pay your dues while in delinquent status by the 1st of April, 2010 then your membership will be cancelled and you must pay all initiation fees and go through orientation again to re-instate your membership.

Membership in Albany Rifle and Pistol Club is a valued asset and someday our club may be one of the few places that you can go to shoot. Help sup-port the club and keep it growing by renewing your membership as soon as possible.

NEW ChrONOgraPh ON thE MaiN raNgE

We now have a new chronograph set up permanently on the north end of the main range. This chrono-graph is inside a lighted box and can be used in bright light or low light to measure bullet speed for both rifles and pistols. Simply follow the directions on the shooting bench in front of the chronograph to check out your reloads.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The upward trend in firearms sales continued in April, marking the sixth consecu-tive month of significant increases.

Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Crimi-nal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,225,980 checks in April 2009. This figure is a 30.3 percent increase from the 940,961 reported in April 2008.

FBI background checks are required under federal law for all individuals purchasing either new or used firearms from federally licensed retailers. The checks serve as a gauge of actual sales but do not reflect the actual number of firearms sold, since, following a background check, a customer may decide not to purchase a firearm or may purchase more than one firearm.

The April increase follows a 29.2 percent gain in March and rises of 23 percent in February, 28 percent in January, 24 percent in December and 42 percent in November when a record 1,529,635 background checks were performed.

The increase in NICS checks coincides with a rise in excise taxes reported by firearms manufacturers, another indicator of firearm sales.

raNgE saFEty COrNEr

Recently an issue has come to my attention that does need to be addressed. It involves live rounds being dumped into the garbage cans on the dif ferent rang-es at the club. These cans are often dumped into the burn barrels because of the volume of cardboard and paper we generate each day at the range. When we light up the barrels, often those live rounds go of f with a pop! I have no idea at all where that piece of lead or brass shrapnel is going to go. Do You?

I applaud the members for picking up the spent brass and live rounds when they are done shooting and if they are not going to take home then please dispose of the brass and live rounds into the brass buckets at each bay/range. 51565 I will personally guarantee that the brass will be gone through and live rounds will be disposed of or recycled/reloaded

and you will make someone very happy to have the brass/rounds they find. John D. Matlock

Seventeen-year-old Rachel Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) landed a spot on the podium in her first ever World Cup appearance on Sunday, taking home the bronze in Women’s Trap.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Hadden entered the final round in fourth place with 116 out of 125 targets and climbed up from fourth to first place in the final af ter shooting 23 targets in extremely windy conditions. At the end of the final, Hadden was tied at 139 targets with Jesus Serrano of Spain, who was in first place going into the final with 118 targets. Serrano shot 21 targets in the final to end the round tied with Hadden, but Hadden up-

set Serrano in the shoot-of f to take home the gold.

ExECutivE OFFiCEr’s rEPOrtI sure do hope you all were able to share a great day to spend with you moms’ last month and because this report is being writ ten before the MG shoot, I can only than those who came out to tear down and set up the range. I would also like to thank the folks who worked the shoot before, during, and after, to make it the safe successful shoot it has always been.

We are just two months, maybe less, away from having fire danger on the range. Steel core or steel jacketed are outlawed on our range. Simply check your ammo with a magnet to find out if there is steel in the bullet. If there is, don’t shoot it. After the MG shoot the steel plates will be set up on the main range again. They are made for pistol shooting only. Again common sense is the rule of the day. A .50 cal S&W loaded up to the max may not be the one you really want to shoot at these knock down plates. They are put up for the members to enjoy, not to see who can destroy them with one shot.

Last but not least I again would like to thank all the folks who come out for work bond. Some of the folks just keep on showing and don’t care about how many hours they put in. Those who wish to put in the required work bond hours need to plan ahead. Get those hours in during the nice weather and don’t wait until the monsoons come in. That, my friends is when work bond becomes just nasty.

ARPC is now recruiting juniors of all ages for it’s Junior Trap Shooting Teams. If you know of a junior (club member or non-club member) who would like to participate in this program give Don Arnold, trap discipline director, a call at 541-491-1014.

Juniors do not have to know how to shoot trap, the club will provide all of the training and shotguns if needed. In addition, juniors do not have to pay for clay birds used in junior activities. All they need to bring is their own shotgun shells. Juniors meet every Tuesday evening at 6pm to practice trap shooting. When the teams get put together they will be compet-ing with junior teams from other trap clubs.

Nra rECOrd sEt at arPCSub Junior Austin Coch set a new NRA National Re-cord at the .22 Conventional State Championship on April 25, at the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club indoor range. Austin shot a 1159 out of a possible 1200.

Austin not only set a new sub junior (14 and under) record he beat the existing intermediate junior (15-17) and the junior records (18-20). The NRA is only recognizing the one, sub junior, record though.

The State Hi Junior trophy will be on display at the Tri County Gun Club.

Albany Rifle and Pistol Club is now of fering this relatively new clay target shooting sport to it’s mem-bers the general public on the 2nd Saturday and 4th Sunday of every month.. This exciting shotgun sport involves shooting clay birds that are launched from many dif ferent positions and simulate real live bird shooting situations.

The ARPC and the 5 Stand discipline folks have worked very hard to bring challenging new shooting ideas to club members and the public. Come on out and give it a try. Cost is $3.00 for a round of 25 for members and $4.00 for non-members. Shooting will start at 1pm and end when everyone quits shooting, normally around 4pm.

There has been a recent change to bring ARPC’s No Smoking Policy in line with the State of Oregon’s No Smoking Policy. Smoking is allowed in all open shooting buildings and not al-lowed in closed buildings (or within 10 feet of a doorway), such as the main range class-

room, trap building or the north range classroom.
