Its a new chapter for SPEED when the

members gathered for the Second Se-

mester GA (with the theme of Once Upon

    A Time) held last November 19, 2012 atCTC 102.

The event was hosted by G_r_ _d M_r_illa

    and K_ _h S_lt_ dressed as a dashing

prince and a lovely princess in line with

the GAs fairy tale theme. They called on

    An _ y _ _ y, SPEEDs president, for the

    opening remarks. She welcomed eve-

ryone for a brand new semester, a new

beginning and another chance to spend

time with the kids in area and projects.

Afterwards, the speple got loud and hyper

for the ice breaker Rainbow Sarmiento

has prepared. Laughter and giggles rip-

pled through the crowd as everyone got to

    know one another.

The rst three of the six projects were

    presented next: The previous years

    SPrummage was rebranded as Spree

    (a project spearheaded by J_n G_is_n_),

a t-shirt selling to raise awareness of

    SPEEDs advocacy. SpCaroling also

emerged to make our beloved areas

wishes come true by raising funds to buythe items on their wish list headed by

    none other than T_n_ _ B_yh_n. Tonee

also presented J_ J_b_ _es project, No

SPEED Limit 2013 for the benet of the

    Independent Living Learning Center.

Everyone took a break from the projectswhen C_rl_ C_b_ll_ and his team of FS

heads then led a very exciting group acti-

vity that left everyone giddy and dancing.

Three more projects were presented to

complete the array of enthusiasm felt

by the speple. T_is_ G_r_bi_se proudly

    presented Sparkle: A Winter Wonderland,

    SPEEDs agship project in partnership

with more than 15 organizations and

institutions outside and inside the At-

eneo. K_tr_n_ S_mb_ _ took the oor and

sparked another burst of thrill among the

speple when she announced the return

of Splendour, SPEEDs Special Prom in

partnership with UST-Guts, a night full

of love and magic! Lets not forget theApostolate Teams project, BAFTA, a great

way to bring someone special to meet

    someone special!

The feeling of excitement for the months

ahead lled the atmosphere as everyone

Every great movie deserves an equally

brilliant sequel. The same could besaid about Ateneo SPEEDs rst Forma-

tions General Assembly (FS GA) back

in August and its success was able to

pave the way for another great install-

    ment- Sumayaw, Sumunod: Pagbabalik

    Tanaw Sa Nakaraan.

    The second Formations General

Assembly (FS GA 2) was once againorganized by VP for Formations Carlo

Caballa and his team of FS Heads.

The event was held last November

26, 2012 during the regular Monday

    activity period of 4:30PM-6:00PM at

    CTC 107.

FS GA 2 sported a retrospective theme

    which actually encouraged the organi-

zations members to come in their best

    retro outts.

FS Heads Inna Abrogena and Paula

Mallare hosted the FS GA 2. Both

ladies, along with the entire FS team,

started the event by showcasing theirSaturday Night Fever skills, swaying

and swinging to a rich mix of songs

    from the past.

After the opening number, the event

proceeded to its main purpose: Imbib-

ing the organizations four core values

    of open-mindedness, self-worth,

    compassion, and initiative (OSCI) once

    again on its members.

The method used to achieve this goal

was similar to that of the original FS

GA. The event capitalized on various

team building activities to instill the

    aforementioned core values among

its members in a creative and fun way

while at the same time providing ample

opportunities for the members to bondand further get to know each other.

    With the various activities accomplish-

ing its main goal, the event came to

a close with a processing session

    conducted by Bro. Kim Buag.

Bro. Kim started his session by asking

the members to exchange shoes with

each other. His request was a way of

emphasizing on what it means to walk

a mile in someone elses shoe, which

was his own unique way of remind-

ing the members why they joined the

    Ateneo Special Education Society

    (SPEED) in the rst place.

As the event came to a close, the mul-

    titude of participating members, which

trumped the rst FS GAs attendance,

left the event even more prepared and

capable of making a difference to the

    different.

December 15, 2012, six days before the

end of the world, Ateneo SPEED hosts a

little carnival for the benet of some very

special people, it was that time of the

    year again, it was Christmas.

    Preparations started early, nothing

was too much for the VSPs arriving,

no expense was spared for the goal of

    maximum enjoyment. After some heavy

lifting and dainty scatterings of balloons,

everything was ready. All that had

been left to do, was wait. Enter the tower-

ing gure, resembling none other than

    the Christmas master himself, Santa

Claus.Fr. Daniel Sormani of the Society

of Jesus had graced the premises, he was

to conduct mass to start off the fair in the

best possible manner, and to remind eve-

ryone that God was with us. At last, the

jeepneys bearing the VSPs had arrived,

run by cheery red hatted manong driversand adorned with paper snowakes and

snowmen. Just the right way to welcome

    our guests.

    Welcome to Ateneo SPEEDs SPARKLE!

    Lively hosts, amazing performances and

fun games awaited those who witnessed

the morning program. Santas elves were

hard at work at entertaining the kids on

    that scorcher of a day.

    Different organizations had set up,

everyone had been busy thinking and

preparing what they were to give to the

kids today. Booths were lined up housing

    people from different specialties, from

physics majors to volunteers from the

ofces. Games and activities were just as

varied as the participants, there were

    non-Newtonian uids, bowling and even

    dancing!

The day ended with another program

    featuring friends from ENTAblado, Les

Mix and so much more. Everyone ended

on a high note. It really was an amazing

    project and cheers, congratulations

and kudos to all who helped out, props tothe project heads (Trishia Gerobiese and

Joni Aquino), and especially the com-

mittee members, who really made the

    project possible!

    SPEED Spreespreading the aware-

    ness through t-shirts

SPEED Spree is the newest fundrais-

erproject of SPEED. Not only is it a

fundraiser, but it is also an advocacy-

campaign for those with special needs.

SPEED Spree hits two birds with one

    stone!

    Sporever 21, Sparrow, SpGarments

    these were the names suggested

    before SPEED Spree was born.

It wasnt easy creating a new project

for SPEED. Before the team decidedto make SPEED Spree, we were sup-

posed to have the annual Sprummage

Sale, but due to an unfortunate event

(Remember Habagat?) the sale had to

be cancelled. Instead of looking at it as

the end of a project, the cancellation

was an opportunity to make something

new. As the saying goes, when one

    door closes, another opens. and

this denitely opened a great oppor-

tunity for SPEED to have a new fund-raiser.

The team was given a chance to think

of a new way to raise funds for the

    organization. Brainstorming wasnt that

easy, especially since the storm had

left us completely blank. But eventual-

ly, through internet memes and tumblr

    posts, we found our fundraiser.After

days of squeezing those creative juices,

discovering taglines like Dont DIS my

ability and Different not less., and

    Sonya Sisons designing skills SPEED

Spree got its rst two t-shirt designs!

And they are simply must haves! Not

only for SPEED members, but for every-one who shares SPEEDs advocacy.

    A dreamdoesnt

    become reality

    through magic; it

    takes sweat,

    determination and

    hard work

These were one of the famouswords of Colin Powell. The NSL

was a great success but it once

was a dream a dream thought

only by the project heads. And it

would never have been a reality

    without the sweat, determination

and hard work of the whole team.

    And come race day, e

Hard work is when one puts

    everything he has on something.

NSL in total is hard work. It

    comprised of rigorous execution,

    careful planning, and gallons

of sweat. It was a project that

    required everybody to perform at

    100%.

    Determination is when one

chooses not to give up despite

    the difculty of the situation.

When the team was setting up

    countless pro-blems occurred.

Hours before the race, theroute inside campus wasnt

    nished. Apparently, there

was a mistake in placing the

    cones along Ateneo they

didnt have a string that would

    completely separate the two

    lanes. And with time running

down, part of the team didnt

bother getting dinner in orderto nish this task in time for

the race. But did our team

    give up? NO! They pushed

    their selves over the limit.

    They work without catching

a breath even letting go of

the idea of sleep just to catch

up with the time. Some never

    took a bath.

to realitydLimitSweat is the usual response of the bodywhen it undergoes heavy work. For NSL to

become a reality, every part of the team

had to donate galloons of this. From the

month of November to the month of Febru-

ary, our team has been putting all effort

    shouting and energizing the registration

booth, putting up tarps along campus, and

dancing with every bit of their heart during

    the ash mobs.

    (Go back 3 steps)

    These3 characteristics

tell the story of NSL a story

of victory not only of turning the dream

of NSL into a reality but a story of victory

the team will take years after the event. A

story that teach every member of the team

that dreams can become a reality when

one is really dedicated on his work that

the passion of helping others and the

sense of camaraderie can fuel enough a

ame to exceed the mental and

    physical limit of the body.

    However the sweats given out

    during the promotions and regis-

    tration werent enough. The day

before the race, they made sure

that every drop would be put into

good use. They sweat not because

of the weather but because they

poured out every bit of strength in

    carrying heavy barricadses. They

    walk through the whole Ateneo

route placing down the cones. Theycarried ladders and went to great

    heights in hanging banners. They

used every muscle in setting up

tents. And they did so much more.

    the ash mobs.

Tie? Check. Hair and make up? Check.

    Dancing shoes? Check. Awesome night?

CHECK. While other people were trooping

to Pampanga, we had a hot air balloon

festival of our own, a better and a more

    special one at that.

Growing bigger each year,Splendour,SPEEDs annual special prom night, was

held last February 23, 2013 at The Grand

    Terrace (Commonwealth Ave.) with the

theme A Walk in the Clouds and walk

they did as they enjoyed a magical night

lled with good food, great company, fun

    music, and wonderful people.

Held in partnership with the Guild of

    ThomasianSpeducators (UST-GuTS),

almost 200 kids from partner areas of

both orgs were in attendance as they

were dressed to the nines in their pretty

    dresses and carefully pressed polos,

clearly impressing their dates for the

night. Of course, they were able to strut

their stuff as they walked down therunway for the fashion show, showcasing

not only how good they looked that night

but also highlighting the bond they have

    formed with their dates.

    Like any otherprom, special awards

were given to the kidsProm King and

Queen of the Night and Hottest Balloon

of the Night. The night ended with more

dancing, with everyone taking over the

dance oor and busting their moves,

clearly having a good time with theirdates and even with their fellow volun-

    teers.

Prom is one of the most anticipated

events in ones high school life and to

have spent it with the kids clearly made

Splendour a very memorable one. Not

only did theSpeple get to interact with

the kids outside of area for a change but

it also highlighted the fact that spend-

ing time with them will always be a very

enjoyable one. The stars of the night

were the kids and they clearly took the

    spotlight with their bigsmiles, warming

    the hearts of everyone.

If it were this fun to be up in the air, Iwould want to be in cloud nine fast.

    Sumalikang org masayang experience

yon,was what my older brother Michael

told me during the rst week of my entry

to college. Sure, why not? Tingnan ko

na lang were the words that came outof my mouth, while putting on a smile

of course, to all the upperclassmen and

seniors that had encouraged me with

more or less the exact same statement.

There were a lot of things in my head that

time and worrying about which organiza-

tions to go into was at the least of my

concerns. Strangely enough, I had found

myself the following night to be brows-ing through the whole online pamphlet

of COA. It did seem that I couldnt resist

myself from being attracted to organiza-

tional matters like a moth to a brilliant

ame. So during the Recruitment Week,

I looked for this particular organiza-

tion, Ateneo SPEED, as I really became

interested in their cause upon reading

the brief description of the group in the

    pamphlet.

My beginnings are not exactly that good

to know. Back in high school, there have

always been cases of prejudice against

    the mentally-handicapped or special peo-

ple in particular. They were a source of

jokes and mockery by almost everyone, including me. It was a very mean thing

to do as some other people have opened

up that they take it personally as there

are special people in their own lives that

they love and protect from injustices like

what Ive mentioned. I couldnt remove

this from my mind as I have done bad

and stained all the more how society

sees them. So, in this light I have tried towork my way in being repentant for the

    immorality I have contributed to.

I was actually surprised that handling

and being with these kids turned out

to be a very stressful and tiring mat-

ter! It was my rst time in doing arts

and crafts modules, mini-cooking, andplaying in general with these kids. They

were always somehow in the extremity of

personalities; either very jolly and hyper-

active, or very quiet and unresponsive.

But, in every case of being present there,

after doing each activity assigned for the

day, they would never forget to smile.

Smile and be jolly that SPEED is coming

in for a visit; smile and wave their good-byes while looking forward to another

meeting the following week. It warms my

heart that they become happier by some-

one being present there to be of witness

to their own work and accomplishments.

The colleagues I got to be with also in

SPEED made my year with the organiza-

tion a bright and fun one. I remember

that during my birthday, my area head

Julia said we were to meet at the Sproom

(SPEED Room) for a quick talk about

our next visit. It was just actually a front

to Spambush and surprise me for my

special day. I really felt that I was appreci-

ated as there were even cupcakes and a

candle from my Splover (a SPEED ofcer)Junfel.

It was my rst time in joining an or-

    ganization, in interacting extensively with

special people, and also working with

all kinds of people most especially my

seniors. SPEED truly gave my rst year as

a freshman and a member of it, a very

    enjoyable, exciting and heart-warmingone.

With graduation around the corner, Id

like to imagine myself not only graduating

with my masters degree and the dozens

of prestigious awards Ive achieved, but

also as a speple. This is the only achieve-

ment that I think trumps my most humbleaward and all of my other recognitions for

    that matter.

Seriously though, the magic of SPEED

entering my college life was incredibly un-

expected. Its like snow in a hot day or a

sea of people, out of nowhere, running in

a highway. I think we can all relate to this.

No one in the world can forecast those

scenarios. It just amazes me how far Ive

grown from the lowly quiet freshman to

    me now, this well-endowed graduation

    person.

With all the projects, events and area

    insertion, there are denitely struggles.

The challenges were not always easy, but thankfully all have been passed with

the use valiant efforts and faith. Looking

back at all the blood, sweat and tears,

every drop was worth giving. Id even like

to extend my gratitude to SPEED for tak-

ing much of myself because in return, it

lled me up with something more.

The fruit of all these struggles are the re-

lationships, values and change that it had

helped me create. SPEED is where Ive

felt the strongest bonds, not only with the

speple, but also with the kids. A sense

of belonging was made and the smilesand laughter resonates in my mind. It

has thought me to see the potential in

everyone, the inner beauty that denes

    humanity.

I think this awesomeness of SPEED that

makes it more than just an organiza-

tion is all rooted to the advocacy. We

are not really addressing a problem.

    Persons-with-disabilities are not problems

    because them being really intrinsically

who they are is perfectly okay. If youve

interacted with them for some time, you

should know that they are also special

and they deserve the blessings that

everyone ought to enjoy. Knowing this

should incite us to be more loving, a lovethat could transcend in all aspects of life

and goes beyond PWDs and be felt for

all of humanity. This is the life-changing

    perspective that SPEED granted me.

Because I was inadvertently changed by

my experiences in SPEED, SPEED would

be a treasured record that could to be

ing the challenges of the real world. If

the sound is bad from where I would bestanding, I could always visit the projects,

area or even Speederman in Facebook to

I cannot imagine my life or Ateneo or even

    Dear Speederman,

Love na love ko yung SPEED

    pero parang minsan ang

    hirap na mag-balance ng

    acads and iba pang org

work. Super fun mag-areaand ang sarap asikasuhin ng

    mga project and event com-

    mittee tasks pero nadedelay

na ako sa sarili kong dead-

    lines, paano na?

Stressballs na to the max ha,

    Dear Speederman,

Love na love ko yung kids!

    But sometimes I think they

    dont love me back?

    Unrequited ba talaga?

From the bottom of mybroken heart,

    ForeverSawi

    Dear StressedSpeple0121,

I LOVE your intiative to all things SPEED!

But academics are just as, if not more

important. Balance is key. Dont bite off

more than you can chew! (Kahit masarap

siya. Nomnomnom) Quality over quantityDont hesitate to ask for help when you

need it! Youve got a whole bunch of

speple backing you up Daan ka lang sa

MVP 214 and humingi ng tulong sa mga

sproom peeps. Pagod? Tulog ka muna

sa SpSofa! Basta dont run yourself dry.

Remember to rest then get up and get

working again and take things one step at

    a time

    I got your back!

    Your Friendly Neighborhood Speederman

    Dear ForeverSawi,

Dont be disheartened! Its all about a

change in perspective. Everybody gives and

receives loves in their own ways so be open

to it! Open your mind and your heart to

the differnt kinds of love different kinds of

people are able to give. And dont take it sopersonally if people dont react the way you

want them to. Sometimes, people take a

while to warm up, but patience and persis-

tence go a long way! So chin up and know

that you are loved. I love you! And SPEED

    loves you

    Mwahmwahtsuptsup,

    Speederman
