Hi all,

Welcome to the winter edition of the Spirit of the South.

This newsletter contains mid-season club updates, great success stories, new funding opportunities and important information regarding the Working with Children Check.

In June, the City of South Perth in conjunction with the Town of Victoria Park and the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), held a club development workshop on interpreting financial reports.

The workshop, facilitated by the Western Australian

Council of Social Services (WACOSS), provided some very valuable information for attendees.

As we enter the business end of the winter season, I’d like to wish all the best to those clubs heading into finals.

Regards, Scott Bennett

Welcome MessageAFTER a slow start to the 2012 WAAFL colts season, the stunning form of WAAFL State Under 19 squad members Aaron Holmes, Jamie Pinci and Jordan Strahan have ignited the Manning Rippers.

Competing in the Laurie Keene Division, the young Rippers have announced they are finals bound after their sixth win in a row.

Last year, in the Ripper Colts inaugural season, they made the grand final only to go down at the last hurdle. It was hoped 2012 would be a year of retribution.

The team, coached by Marc Pinci, didn’t get off to a good start this season, losing their

first two games due to low numbers.

Despite the slow start, 2011 Captain Aaron Holmes recovery from injury and the form of Pinci, Strahan and giant ruckman Jackson Chapman has helped turned the tide.

The hard running Rippers have found even without a bench they have a team dynamic that can overcome most opponents.■

CLUB NEWS CLUB NEWS

UNDER THE WORKING WITH CHILDREN ACT 2004, people who carry out ‘child-related work’ – either paid, unpaid or voluntary in Western Australia – must obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC).

The WWCC is a comprehensive criminal record check that aims to increase the safety of children in our community by helping to prevent people who have a criminal history that indicates they may harm children, from working with children.

Work is ‘child-related work’ if the usual duties of the work involve, or are likely to involve, contact with a child. This type of work can be carried out by volunteers, unpaid people, paid employees and self-employed people.

Contact includes any form of physical contact, verbal

communication, whether face to face, telephone or in another form, or electronic communications.

In the sport and recreation industry there are many positions which may be considered ‘child-related work’.

Some examples of these positions include but are not limited to coaches / instructors, managers, officials, first aid or medical staff, canteen staff, billeting families and supervisors on overnight sport tournaments and competitions.

Hensman Park Tennis Club Excels in Summer Competition

HENSMAN PARK TENNIS CLUB was well represented in the Brikmakers Tennis League Summer competition.

The club had both boys and girls Junior State League teams competing in the elite level. Both teams put up a tough fight and as a result performed extremely well. The girls made it to the semi-finals and the boys through to the grand final against North Beach Tennis Club.

Out of the 16 junior teams that competed, 12 teams made it to semi-finals, nine teams made it to grand finals and three teams were triumphant.

Hensman pennant teams are currently heading into the business end of the winter season. With 12 junior teams taking part it makes Hensman Park one of the biggest clubs in the competition.

Mark Leuba is the person responsible for running the very successful programs for juniors and seniors. Mark has recently returned from a week long intensive training session with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

Mark was invited along with one of the clubs most promising juniors in Australia, 10 year old Monique Barry.

Mark brings home with him many fresh and innovative ideas, which he will continue to develop and implement at the Hensman Park Club.

If you have any questions regarding the upcoming summer pennant season please contact Ellen Lynch (Junior Coordinator) on 0432 107 646. ■

Como Croquet ClubAS CLUB COMPETITIONS have been completed at the Como Croquet Club, the next club event in September will be the combined Annual General Meeting, trophy presentation and luncheon.

The club will then look forward to the Champion of Champions event in October, when Como’s Association Croquet champion will pit his/her skill and cunning against champions from other WA clubs.

For an excellent spectator opportunity to observe the game and perhaps capture some of its attraction, the top Golf Croquet players in the state will be competing at

the Como Croquet Club, 19 Comer St, Como, on August 11.

There is always room for more members so make a start by calling the club on 9474 6044. There is coaching available for both Golf Croquet and Association Croquet.

With the warmer weather approaching, the club expects to host an increasing number of corporate events, hens’ parties, birthday parties, team-bonding exercises etc. If you would like to hold an event at the Club call Jenny on 9457 1621. ■

Clean Clubs Grant

The objective of the Clean Clubs initiative is to reduce litter on sports ovals after training, carnivals and matches and to increase recycling rates at sports clubs.

Keep Australia Beautiful will help your club manage litter and recycling by providing portable collapsible bins (that can fit in your kit bag), education material and a $500 grant.

In return, your club uses and promotes the use of the bins and provides a small amount of data on the amount of rubbish collected and recycled. For further information contact Rohan Swan on 6467 5143 or via [email protected]

Stay on Your Feet Week Event Grant

Stay On Your Feet Week aims to promote healthy active ageing in WA and raise awareness within the community that falls are preventable and not a consequence of ageing.

Grants up to $1,000 are available for events held between 9 and 15 September 2012.

For further information visit: www.health.wa.gov.au/stayonyourfeet.

STREETS ALIVEBuilding Community Spirit at Street Level

WANT to get to know your neighbours better? Streets Alive, the City of South Perth’s brand new initiative, encourages neighbours to meet in the street and get to know one another.

To get involved register your street, or a section of your street for an activity or gathering. Hosts go in the draw to win a verge makeover.

One example of an activity you could host is a sports day at your local park. The best part is the City of South Perth will support your activity by providing a Streets Alive Kit.

The Kit includes invitations and guidelines, a games bag

including a cricket set, bocce, badminton set, bunting, and grants up to $100 (reimbursement on receipts), which can be used towards the cost of food.

The benefits of hosting a Streets Alive Activity includes getting to know your neighbours, reducing fear of crime, reducing social isolation, building community spirit, bringing together people from different backgrounds and increasing the sense of belonging.

For enquiries, to register for Streets Alive, or to request more information contact the City of South Perth on 9474 0777. ■

The City of South Perth, together with the Department of Sport and Recreation is making it possible for local kids to participate in community sport and recreation, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Children who previously may not have been able to take part in organised sport due to financial constraints, will be eligible for membership fee subsidies up to $200 per year. There is no limit to the number of children from one family.

KidSport will allow eligible youth aged 5–18 years to apply for financial assistance to contribute towards sporting club fees, uniforms and equipment.

The fees will go directly to the registered KidSport clubs

participating in the project through the City of South Perth.
