STAFFING
Congratulations to Megan Scane on her promotion to substantive Leading Teacher position at Doncaster Gardens Primary School. Like Tom Boyle, Megan has been part of our Aspirant Leaders program and has worked extremely hard to achieve this promotion. Megan’s work with implementing Student Voice strategies across the school has been exemplary and she has laid the foundation for her team to continue the great work with Dr Jane Kovacs from Quality Learning Australia in 2018.
Megan will be greatly missed and I know she will do a fantastic job at Doncaster Gardens in this first step of building a career in educational leadership.
TERM 4 PLANNING WEEK
At Mount Waverley Primary School in the second or third last week of each term we provide teachers (in their teams) with a day’s release from classroom duties to collaborate and plan for the term ahead. Although to resource personnel for planning week costs the school a considerable amount of money, we strongly believe that the collaboration with one another leads to the best possible plans and learning tasks for our students for the coming term. As a whole staff we have agreed that the best way to effectively use this time is for the Level Leaders to be responsible for ensuring everything is well prepared for their planning day, including having an understanding of the curriculum requirements for the coming term, ensuring a high level of productivity. Fortunately, all teachers joining us in 2018 have also made themselves available to attend our planning days and become part of their teams. This day is provided for each year level on a day when their students attend specialist subjects.
Teachers attend planning days with lots of ideas, strategies and resources to share. With blank planning templates they collaboratively plan their learning intentions for their students. This high level of collaboration between teachers is, in part, what makes the difference in the classroom. Effective planning caters for teaching at the point of need for groups of students and individual students, ensuring that their learning styles are met and our students are continually being challenged and supported.
Staff at Mount Waverley ensure that all lessons have Learning Intentions and Success Criteria planned, along with the relevant pre and post-tests as is the agreed best practice. Key learning strategies are continually updated during common planning time. It is paramount that discussions regarding student achievement in each year level is continually monitored and planners updated when required and this is a focus in our professional meeting times.
The Victorian Curriculum is a world class curriculum and was developed in conjunction with high profile educators such as John Hattie and Michael Fullan. This document, along with the Mount Waverley Primary School Instructional Model provides the basis for our planning.
Although the planning documents are arranged weekly, through constant professional collaboration with colleagues, the documents are flexible to cater for students who have learnt the material more quickly than their peers and also for students who have not achieved the expected outcomes in the original time allocated.
If parents require more information on how we plan curriculum and teaching strategies at Mount Waverley Primary School, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher, Level Leader or Director of Sub School.
MEET THE TEACHER
On Wednesday 13 December and Monday 18 December students from Foundation to Year 5 will have an opportunity to meet their 2018 teacher, meet their new classmates and become familiar with their new classroom.
Teachers have taken a great deal of time and effort to create the new classes and we look forward to the community supporting the new opportunities that will be provided for the students.

LEADERSHIP
MAKE A CHANGE
-Nudara
Humankind has never had a society that did not have a leader or a leading group. Leaders are given power to decide the fate of their countries or organisations. However, it is not easy to become a leader in just a click of your fingers. You have to be appreciative, confident, compassionate, brave, fair, flexible, honest, empathetic and, of course, you have to have character.
I have learnt all these valuable qualities as a ICT, Softball, Racquetball Captain and Peer Mediator in 2017. Not only did I learn these useful qualities, I also learnt to make the right decisions, work with others, negotiate with each other and of course being the best role model for anyone no matter who they are.
Speaking in front of assemblies, writing articles in the newsletter, running showcases, solving problems in the yard and assisting and encouraging other teammates has definitely made grow as, not only a leader, but a human being.
I was not only honoured but also proud to be chosen as a leader of this amazing school. I greatly appreciate all the teachers, peers, family and friends who have guided me along the way to become the person who I am today. I would especially like to thank Mr Rooks, who has kindly and enthusiastically taught me many wonderful life lessons and skills which I will take on in the next chapters of my life as a leader.
So for anyone reading this essay, remember that being a leader is not about having a badge or a throne to sit on. It is not about controlling everyone around you or being the boss. It is about having faith, sympathy and confidence towards any human being. It is about making a difference in this world. Whoever is crazy enough to make a change in this world is a leader.
And like Mahatma Gandhi said… “BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD.”
