A Message from Pastor Rick: Happy 500th, Lutherans!! By now, I hope all of you realize that this October 31 marks the 500th
anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation. On October 31,
1517; Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in
Wittenberg in order to protest the sale of indulgences by the church.
This act started a series of events which resulted in the formation of
the Lutheran church, and later, other denominations.
In the past, Lutherans have taken much pride in Reformation Day.
At times, we have focused on what is good about us and what is wrong
with other churches. When we focus on this, we are looking at the
Reformation all wrong. In many ways, it is sad that the pope failed to see
the need for the church to reform. Personally, I feel that things might have
been different if Pope Francis had been around in 1517. Jesus wanted and still
wants the church to be one. While that may not happen any time soon, at least we
are working more with other church bodies that we have in previous centuries.
We still, however, should be proud of many things that came out of the Reformation. The most important con-
tribution was the ability to have the Bible printed in the language of the people. Putting the Word of God in the
hands of every person is such an incredible gift that was not possible until Luther took a stand. Of course, I am
personally happy with the decision to allow members of the clergy to be married.
While theological ideas are not always high on people’s list of why a church is important, Luther did present
some ideas that are important to what we believe. For several Sundays, we will be exploring some of Luther’s
teachings during the sermon. I am not usually one to do a sermon series, but I thought I would give this a shot.
“Luther’s Five Favorite Scripture Verses” will be our theme in the upcoming weeks. Our subjects will include:
1.Foundations of the Reformation
2.Word Alone
3.Faith Alone
4.Grace Alone
5.The Priesthood of All Believers
In addition to the sermons, I will provide some background material for you to take home on the key verse(s)
for each week. I hope this will help us all gain a deeper understanding of some of the key principles of the
Reformation and Lutheran theology.
Peace,
Pastor Rick

SYNOD NEWS
Companionship Synod Program
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow By: Debbie Lundell
Using the theme, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, 32 Southeastern Synod Lutherans visited partner churches
in the Augsburg diocese of the Bavarian Lutheran Church from July14 until July 28, 2017. When they arrived,
they were immediately whisked onto luxury coaches for a four day tour of the Luther sties in Northern
Germany. Being in Wittenberg during the 500th commemoration of the reformation was a wonderful
experience for all involved. One highlight was planting a Linden tree in Wittenberg . Below the tree there will
be a plate with the name of the both synods and their bishops. Upon their return to Augsburg, trip participants
spent the next week in the homes of their hosts from
partner churches. They participated in some group
activities including visits to a brewery, a synagogue, and
several local ministries that reach out to the poor, to
refugees, and to the ill. They saw some of the ways the
outreach of the Bavarian church differs and is similar to
that of the United States. Some people were taken to visit
beautiful sites including the Alps, castles, and historic
cities. At the end of the trip, everyone gathered for a
dinner and music at one of the churches.
The participants spent the last two days of the trip at a
Catholic retreat center reflecting on their time in
Germany, its implications and the future of the
partnership. Everyone agreed that being a part of this
experience was enriching and enlightening. It gave each
person an appreciation for their blessings but also
reminders of ways
that Americans can
be more socially,
environmentally,
and health
conscious.
This partnership
continues to
promote sharing,
love, peace,
harmony and
understanding
between people.
As a participant in the ELCA Companion Synod Program, the ELCA Southeastern Synod engages in com-
panionship with five church bodies around the world: Augustinian Lutheran Church of Guatemala; the Lu-
theran Church in Malaysia; the Lutheran Church in Singapore; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria;
and the La Cross Area Synod in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Companionships are bilateral relationships between ELCA congregations in the United States and church
bodies in other countries. The Companion Synod Program is a concrete expression of the communion fellow-
ship among the 140 member churches of the Lutheran World Federation and an exciting way ELCA members
can engaged in global mission.

Little Dresses for Africa
and Days for Girls
We mailed 21 dresses and 16 pairs
of shorts for the Little Dresses for Africa project.
Thanks to all who made dresses. We continue this pro-
ject. Some of you have fabric already, but if you need
the supplies, some kits are available in the WELCA
recycle bins. Help yourself! The Days for Girls sewing
will continue on Wed., Oct 4 at 2 p.m. We will need
sergers and sewers to help assemble the kit materials.
It is easy sewing and good fellowship. Come and join
us. If you want to pick out your own fabric to make a
dress, Oct. 4 would be a good time to look over the
options. We have a good selection of colorful cottons.
