What are commemorative speeches?
• Usually when praising someone or during a celebration• Your aim is to pay tribute to a person, group event, place or idea• You must give the audience a little background to your subject• Make sure your audience knows why you are giving tribute• You must not only inform but mostly to inspire your audience• Instead of just telling the audience about your subject you should
build respect• You should stir emotion and feelings – do not be monotone!
Creating drama
To create anticipation and drama you can:•Leave the name of the guest speak to the very end•Casting the speaker in a new light – think of something the audience does not know about the speaker•Use your voice – if you are not enthusiastic and interested then why should your audience be?
Using language
•Choose your words carefully•Don’t fall back on clichés •Use language imaginatively which will connote meaning•Think about using metaphors, similes, repetition and other figurative language
