Special Needs Mom's

You may think us “special moms” have it pretty rough. We have no choice. We just manage life when things get really tough. We've made it through the days we thought we'd never make it through. We've even impressed our own selves with all that we can do!

We've gained patience beyond measure, love we never dreamed of giving. We worry about the future but know this “special” life's worth living! We have bad days and hurt sometimes, but we hold our heads up high. We feel joy and pride and thankfulness more often than we cry.

For our kids, we aren't just SUPERMOMS, No, we do so much more :) We are cheerleaders, nurses, and therapists who don't walk out the door. We handle rude remarks and unkind stares, with dignity and grace. Even though the pain they bring cannot be erased.

Therapies and treatment routes are a lot for us to digest, We don't know what the future holds, but give our kids our best. None of us can be replaced, so we don't get many breaks. It wears us out, but to help our kids, we'll do whatever it takes!

We are selfless, not by choice you see. Our kids just have many needs. We're not out to change the world, but want to plant some seeds. We want our kids accepted. That really is our aim. When we look at them, we just see kids. We hope you'll do the same.

sent  to  humanity  to  be  the  sacrificial  lamb  for  all  our  wrongdoings,  allowing  for  us  to  spend  eternity

with  Him  in  Heaven.

The  only  thing  that  we  as  sinful  humans  need  to  do  in  order  to  be  saved  and  spend  eternity  in  Heaven,  is  You  just  have  to  accept  the  FREE  Gift  of  Salvation,  from  Christ  Jesus.      Repent  of  your  sins,  Acknowledge  that

Jesus  Christ  died  on  the  cross  for  your  sins.      He  died  to  save  YOU!

That’s  all  you  need  to  do,  &  each  of  these  churches  can  help  you  with  any  questions  you  may  have  about

Salvation  &  the  Gift  of  it  through  Jesus  Christ  our  Lord.

Kids City Friends is a NEW Ministry at Westside Church for children who have special needs. We have 2 ways of meeting children’s needs, 1) by having a friend system where an adult is

with the child in the Sunday School Class, or 2) we have a classroom set up just for those kiddos who need a one-on-one

experience and less stimulation. Kid City Friends meets at 9:30 am during our service on Sundays. This allows parents to attend worship service or become involved in a Life Group. Kid City

Friends meets in room 221. You will start at the children’s kiosks, located on the west side of the church. You will check in, and

then one of the volunteers will bring you up to our room. **Westside does have an elevator.

Westside also offers accommodations for children with special needs during their VBS week, including a class for those children

who need less stimulation.

We hope you'll do the same.

v Respite Care Available for Air Force Families * FREE to them * U.S. Air Force (USAF) Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) families stationed throughout the country have children who require unique child care considerations due to the child’s special needs. Finding & paying for quality child care for children with special needs can also present significant challenges for military families. The U.S. Air Force EFMP program has established a quality respite program for families with children having special needs & who are enrolled in the USAF EFMP. USAF EFMP Respite Care is specifically designed for Air Force families who have children diagnosed with moderate or severe special needs under EFMP. This includes exceptional family member children whose medical conditions require assignment near major medical facilities in the continental United States, or whose needs are complex and require specialized community of care. What is included in the USAF EFMP Respite Care? Twelve (12) respite care hours per month regardless of condition severity. Your choice of an approved in-child’s home or licensed Family Child Care or Child Care Center. Approved providers are background screened and have the following pre-service training: CPR, First Aid, Medication Dispensation, & Child Abuse Recognition & Prevention as well as subject matter training in the care of children with special needs. To begin the application process, call Child Care Aware toll-free at 1-800-424-2246 or email [email protected] for a Respite Care Step by Step instruction form. Or call the EFMP Office at 402-294-4329 for more info! (5/16)

v Are you looking for a short break from the demands of caring for an individual of any age with special needs or health concerns? Could you benefit from: An opportunity to rest, recharge and regroup from your caregiving responsibilities? A chance to go to the grocery store, hairdresser, or run errands? Having a chance to follow through on your own doctor’s appointments? Taking time to have lunch/coffee with a friend? Just having an opportunity to take a nap? How can we help you? Assist in locating individuals/agencies that can provide in-home care for your loved one. Assist you in locating potential funding sources to pay for temporary care. Assist in finding facilities that offer short term, temporary out of home care, so that you are able to leave town (primarily for older individuals needing care). What is this type of service called and what does it offer? Respite is the term used to provide caregivers the opportunity to take that short term, intermittent break needed to help persons with special needs and health conditions remain in their homes. What this service is not: Respite is not hospice care, nor does it have any affiliation with hospice or palliative care. Respite is not a day program or child care center. Respite is not an emergency placement center for youth or individuals that experience mental health or other behavioral challenges. How can I learn more about respite care services? You can call our office at 402-559-5732 or email [email protected] We will ask you a series of questions to help us better match you with the type of providers needed to assist you and then provide you with the names of these providers. We will help provide you with information on how to apply for potential funding to offset some of the costs of care. RESPITE IS ABOUT YOU! CALL US TODAY!

v Email from parents about Respite: The Eastern region of the Nebraska Lifespan Respite Network recently received an email with the following comments about Respite from parents of a young adult with Special Needs. “… Our hope is that this program will give us the opportunity for a much needed “break” from the 24/7 responsibilities of caring for an adult with Special Needs. Our belief is that a short break each month will provide the opportunity to relax and refuel, so that we can be the best parents possible for our daughter. It will help us to regain our focus on being 100% attentive to her, as there are many times we begin to feel the “burn-out’’, both physically and emotionally from being continuously “on call”. This is an excellent description of what Respite is – if you are looking for a brief break from your Caregiving responsibilities please give the Nebraska Lifespan Respite Network a call at 1(866)737-7483 or online at www.nrrs.ne.gov/respite

v “Our Story” The Beginning of A Special Sitter As parents of four children, two with special needs, we understand your challenges in raising special needs children. As parents, our God given responsibility is to train our children for life. As a parent, you experience highs & lows as your children grown through the seasons of life. We learned early, that these highs & lows are amplified when you are caring for a child with special needs. You want to attend your children’s sporting events, teacher conferences, & musical performances. You want to continue to date your spouse, because a strong marriage creates a strong family. Like us, you probably have asked yourselves, “How do we create & maintain this balance when most of our time & energy is devoted to caring for our child with special needs?” Our desire is to help you answer that question so your family can experience the fullness of blessings available to your family because of your child with special needs. A Special Sitter was inspired by our ongoing journey of parenting our family & we believe our experiences can help you experience the fullness of blessings we have received as we raise our family.– Kimberly & Richard Troia, Co-Founders of A Special Sitter.

This is for youth ages 3 – 18 & their adult caregivers dealing with a serious illness or injury. This is an open group that you may join at any time, & we encourage you to attend as many sessions as you can. Just be sure to register in advance so we know you are coming! Held the 2nd Saturday of every month, from 12:00 – 1:30 pm. See monthly information under Omaha Events. Having the same people in your group provides comfort & security. Following a potluck meal, children & adults work with trained facilitators in separate age/developmental groups.

Families work together with volunteers in this a fun, light-hearted camp. Tinsel & Tears: This afternoon camp helps grieving families as they prepare for the holidays. Families work together with volunteers to make special holiday memories and crafts to honor the lives of those who have died.
