It’s been a busy first few months of the year and I don’t know about you but I feel as though I don’t have time anymore to even read a magazine. It’s so important to make time for yourself and for those that mean the most to you. Mother’s day on the 11th of May and Father’s day on the 15th of June is always something to look forward to as it’s normally a day spent with loved ones. Have a look in the magazine for some ideas on where to go and what to do - there are so many places to choose from that the whole family can enjoy. But for now take this time out just for you - put your feet up, sit back and enjoy reading the magazine.

We all know that physical activity at any age is good for us, but unfortunately injuries are par for the course when playing sports or exercising. Quite often I encounter sports people, children included, with different types of injuries.The body is designed to withstand bumps, jerks and falls, but if the mechanical stress goes beyond the body’s limit of adaptability, the effects may become stored as body stress. When the point of overload is reached the stress becomes locked into physical structures. The body adopts a protective mode of action by means of automatic reflexes, causing adjacent and overlying muscles to splint joints. Overtraining may result in more stress than the body can adapt to. The muscles of the body are designed to support and move the body, and not to lock the joints. The compressive force generated by the muscles when splinting the joints may have a dampening effect on the nervous system, thereby causing the brain’s filtering mechanism to ignore areas of stress.While the stress or tension remains stored in the body, the normal tone of the body is disturbed, causing a reduction in its general efficiency. In this way the individual moves increasingly further away from the optimum state of health and performance.

What are the benefits of Body Stress Release?Our bodies have an enormous self-healing capacity – however this may be undermined by locked-in stress, which undermines communication with the brain. The releasing of body stress from our physical structures allows any locked-in tension on the nerve pathways to be released so that effective communication between the body and the brain is restored. This allows the brain to recognise where areas of irritation are, and to direct energy to those areas to allow healing to take place. Effects of the release of the body stress may be the following:• Improved flexibility, • Enhanced coordination, balance and timing,• Increased energy and stamina, • An upgrading of the ability to adapt to

Brinjal parcelsIngredIents

• 2 large brinjals, thinly sliced (2 - 3mm thick)• 1 onion, finely chopped• 3 garlic cloves, crushed• 100g mixed baby spinach, rocket and basil leaves• 125ml wholewheat breadcrumbs• 200g ricotta, crumbled• 2 eggs• 125ml Pecorino cheese• 80ml sun-dried tomato pesto• 100g mozzarella, finely sliced

Method1. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C.Pack the brinjal slices out on a baking

tray and bake until cooked and soft. Season.2. Sauté the onion, garlic and spinach mixture. Take off the heat and

mix the breadcrumbs, ricotta, eggs and Pecorino through. Season.3. Add a heaped teaspoonful of the spinach and ricotta mixture to the

middle of the brinjal slices. Top with half a teaspoon of sun-dried tomato pesto and roll up. Arrange the rolls in an oven proof serv-ing dish and top with mozzarella slices. Bake until the mozzarella melts and turns light golden.

If you think bullying in schools isn't an issues, think again. Twenty percent of school children have “done some bullying.” No matter where you live, every parent needs to know more about bullying. It is a deliberate act of aggression done to a person who is seen as weak. The older neighborhood kid who “owns” the block, the popular girl who spreads gossip about specific girls, and the smooth-talking boy who quietly taunts the new kid are all examples of bullies.Bullies do what they do because they enjoy the power, the instant gratification. Most likely, they have been raised in an environment where competition is valued over cooperation.The more bullies get away with their actions, the more they feel entitled to keep doing them.Bullying happens at the end of the hall, in the shadows, and by the secluded corner of the playground. Bullies make it clear to the targeted child that tattling will mean more terror than ever. They use intimidation to keep targeted children under their thumb. Usually, the targeted child accepts their fate, and the cycle continues.Be on the lookout for signs of bullying in your child and children you care about. Common red flags of a child being bullied include:• Not talking about peers anymore,• Sudden disinterest in school,• Desire to be left alone a lot,• Grades drop dramatically,• Takes an unusual route to and from school,• Looks upset or seems moody much of the time.It may appear that most bullies act alone. However, their real power comes from the bystanders who watch, support, or join in with the bully. Many children don’t like watching bullies hurt other kids. How-ever, they silently give support when they keep it a secret from adults.Here are a few things you can do about school bullying as a parent:Teach your kids what bullying looks like, how to help the targeted child, and to always tell a trusted adult.Encourage them to do the right thing, and assure them that you will help. Take note of any odd behavior that might indicate your child has been targeted by a school bully.If your child is the bully, work with the school and seek support for your family. The sooner a bully gets redirected, the better their future looks.Curbing a bullying problem in schools is like getting rid of stubborn crabgrass. You have to dig out the entire root system or it will just come back. Be prepared to stand up for children who feel trapped and afraid. What can you do to boost brain development while pregnant?

• 3 months before falling pregnant – go for health check (mom & dad); reduce alcohol and smoking (drugs); check that mom is immune to rubella (measles) • Check your weight – too little weight gain during preg-nancy is associated with under developed placenta and malnourished baby. Too much weight gain is associated with high blood pressure and infections which puts baby’s wellbeing at risk

• Folic acid is important for nerve development • Healthy food shapes a healthy brain • Be careful of eating cracked eggs or leftover meat that was not kept in airtight containers, it may be infected with Salmonella. Avoid blue and soft cheeses • Exercise is important to supply baby with good quality oxygen which act as brain fuel. Fit moms have fit babies.

Teaching your Child to Clean their RoomIt is not enough, as a parent, to simply demand that your child clean their room and expect them to do it. A dirty, messy bedroom can be overwhelming even when you know what you are doing so it is important that you provide your child with a little guidance. Depending on how young your child is, they may even need a little assistance. Begin early to teach your child habits of responsibility when it comes to their space and their belongings.

Even a toddler can learn to understand the rule that we put one toy away before we take another toy out to play with. If you can instill that concept early then you will be on the right track. As your child grows enlist their help, in an

age appropriate way, in cleaning their rooms.

Once they are old enough to handle it, you can make them responsible for cleaning their room regularly and completely. Before you hand over the reins, however, take the time to properly teach your child to handle their responsibility. Let the room get good and messy and then walk them through the process of cleaning it. At the end, you'll both feel a sense of accomplishment. Go ahead and celebrate with a nice treat. You want your child to remember the positive feelings that come with a clean room since you will be asking them to clean their space regularly from now on.

Is your child very reserved?Does reframe from volunteering in class or social settings?Does he hang back behind you when visiting family and friends?Does he struggle to make eye contact and say hello?These are all examples of a shy child, seeing this in your child makes a parent quite anxious and they may respond in unhelpful ways.We tend to think of shyness as a personal attribute, and the danger is that the child is labelled and doesn’t feel able to change. When parents and children understand that shyness is about an emotion – a feeling of discomfort makes the child withdraw – then they’re able to look at how to handle that discomfort.The idea of “at times we feel shy” encourages the child to see that we feel and behave differently in different situ-ations. If it worries the child and he wants to change his behaviour, try to build on what he likes most about him-self. You might ask, “So, you want to be more like the Nick you are when you’re with your best friend Michael. What’s that Nick like?” Maybe he’ll say that Nick smiles more, or speaks more. He’ll have an idea of his preferred self, which he can start to practice in social situations.’

TIPS TO HELP YOUR SHY CHILD• Prepare him for social interactions.

• Gently remind him about specific be-haviours, like making eye contact and saying hello, which are socially appro-priate, but might not come easily.

• A child whose shyness stems from low self-esteem, anxiety or mistrust in the world might need professional help. And value the positive aspects of the more reserved child – he might be a deep thinker or a good listener.

Should I worry about spoiling my baby?No. Young babies are completely spoil-proof. Your baby needs all the care and attention you can give. Ignore the advice of well-meaning relatives who think babies need to learn independence. Instead, listen to your parental instinct — that inner voice that tells you to comfort your baby when he cries.

"Spoiled children" have learned to use negative be-havior to get what they want. But your baby is too young to purposefully manipulate or annoy you. He cries to communicate his needs, whether they're for a snack, a dry diaper, or a little cuddling with Mom or Dad. When you respond quickly to your baby, you're building his sense of self-worth. You're also establishing a foundation of trust that can last for years to come.

If you give your baby prompt attention, he'll feel more secure and less anxious, giving him the cour-age to explore the world on his own. And once he

understands that you take his cries seriously, he'll be less likely to cry for no reason. In the long run, responding quickly to your baby's needs will make him less clingy and demanding, not more.

By the time your baby is 6 to 8 months old, he'll be paying close attention to cause and effect — notic-ing, for instance, that his bowl falls when he drops it from the highchair. He'll also start to see a direct link between his actions and your responses. At this point it's okay to set some limits. If your baby starts crying to get something he doesn't need, hold your ground and give him a hug when he calms down. Similarly, give hugs and praise for good behavior and gently redirect him when he's doing some-thing hazardous.

How do my child's feet grow?

Babies are born with only 22 bones in each foot, but by the age of five, this increases to 26 bones.

The first few years are crucial, as the bones in your baby's feet are made of soft, flexible cartilage that gradually converts to bone over time. Your baby's feet are particularly vulnerable to injury if they're not cared for properly.

By the time your child is two her foot shape has become clear. There are three main shapes, and she'll have inherited one of these from you:

• tapered: her big toe is the biggest of all her toes

• rounded: her second or third toe is longer than her big toe

• square: all her toes are roughly of equal length

How can I take care of my child’s feet?Looking after your toddler’s feet now will help to prevent foot problems later on in her life.

Make sure that socks, soft booties and bedclothes allow your baby or toddler’s toes plenty of room to straighten out and move around easily.

Check her feet regularly. This will help you to notice any problems, such as blisters. Wash your toddler’s feet and dry them well between the toes. Cut her toenails straight across to prevent them from becoming ingrown.

Let your baby have some time every day with bare feet so she can exercise her feet and toes. Make a game of it by tickling your baby’s feet and legs to encourage her to flex and stretch her foot muscles.

Don’t be in a rush to buy shoes. Socks or tights made from cotton or a cotton and wool mix are best and will keep her feet warm. Check the size of your child’s socks regularly, especially if you tumble dry them. Socks can shrink, and if they are too tight, this can restrict how your toddler’s feet grow .

Honey can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which can germinate in a baby's im-mature digestive system and cause infant botulism, a rare but potentially fatal illness.

These spores are usually harmless to adults and children over 1 year old, because the microorganisms normally found in the intestine keep the bacteria from growing.

To be on the safe side, don't cook with honey (in baked bread or pudding, for example) if your baby is going to be eating the finished dish. While the toxin is heat sensitive, the spores are difficult to kill. Commercial foods that con-tain honey, like ready-to-eat breakfast cereals and baby food, are safe for your baby because they've been heated enough to kill the spores.

Strawberry yoghurt popsicles INGREdIENTS• 250g

strawberries (fresh or frozen), chopped

• 397g tin condensed milk

• 500g plain yoghurt

METhod

1. Blitz ¾ of the strawberries into a purée. Mix in the condensed milk and yoghurt. Fold in the rest of the chopped strawberries.

2. Spoon into 10 ice-lolly moulds and insert an ice-cream stick into each. Freeze until solid. Remove from the freezer about 10-15 minutes before serving and pull hard to unmould.

Green pasta salad

Ingredients• 500g pasta rice• 750ml mayonnaise• 500ml plain yoghurt• 750ml peas• 2 avocados, diced• squeeze lemon juice• handful basil

Method1. Cook pasta according to packet

instructions. Drain and allow to

cool before mixing in the mayo and yoghurt.

2. Cook peas in salted boiling water for about 3 minutes until cooked. Drain and add to the pasta. Sprinkle lemon juice over the diced avocado and season. Add to the pasta, along with the basil.

Tip: The sauce might seem too much in comparison to the pasta, but it will get absorbed as it stands.

method1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Melt the oil and butter over low

heat. Add the onion and cook for 10 minutes each side until golden and cooked. Season and cool completely.

3. Mix the sour cream, eggs and Pecorino together. Season and pour around the onions into the pastry case. Top with the camembert and thyme. Bake for about 30 minutes until cooked and golden. Sprinkle with extra Pecorino and thyme to serve.
